Propagation and Scattering of Lamb Waves at Conical Points in Plates.

ABSTRACT: Lamb waves exhibit conical dispersion at zero wave number when an accidental degeneracy occurs between thickness mode longitudinal and shear resonances of the same symmetry. Here we investigate the propagation of Lamb waves generated at the conical point frequency and the interaction of these waves with defects and interfaces. The group velocity and mode shapes of Lamb waves at the conical point are found, and it is shown that as the wavenumber gets close to zero, considerable group velocity is seen only for material properties supporting a degeneracy or near-degeneracy. The unusual wave propagation and mode conversion of Lamb waves generated at the conical point are elucidated through numerical simulations. Experimental measurements of near conical point Lamb wave interaction with holes in a plate demonstrate that these waves flow around defects while maintaining a constant phase of oscillation across that plate surface.

Imaging gigahertz zero-group-velocity Lamb waves.

Project description:Zero-group-velocity (ZGV) waves have the peculiarity of being stationary, and thus locally confining energy. Although they are particularly useful in evaluation applications, they have not yet been tracked in two dimensions. Here we image gigahertz zero-group-velocity Lamb waves in the time domain by means of an ultrafast optical technique, revealing their stationary nature and their acoustic energy localization. The acoustic field is imaged to micron resolution on a nanoscale bilayer consisting of a silicon-nitride plate coated with a titanium film. Temporal and spatiotemporal Fourier transforms combined with a technique involving the intensity modulation of the optical pump and probe beams gives access to arbitrary acoustic frequencies, allowing ZGV modes to be isolated. The dispersion curves of the bilayer system are extracted together with the quality factor Q and lifetime of the first ZGV mode. Applications include the testing of bonded nanostructures.

Special scattering regimes for conical all-dielectric nanoparticles.

Project description:All-dielectric nanophotonics opens a venue for a variety of novel phenomena and scattering regimes driven by unique optical effects in semiconductor and dielectric nanoresonators. Their peculiar optical signatures enabled by simultaneous electric and magnetic responses in the visible range pave a way for a plenty of new applications in nano-optics, biology, sensing, etc. In this work, we investigate fabrication-friendly truncated cone resonators and achieve several important scattering regimes due to the inherent property of cones-broken symmetry along the main axis without involving complex geometries or structured beams. We show this symmetry breaking to deliver various kinds of Kerker effects (generalized and transverse Kerker effects), non-scattering hybrid anapole regime (simultaneous anapole conditions for all the multipoles in a particle leading to the nearly full scattering suppression) and, vice versa, superscattering regime. Being governed by the same straightforward geometrical paradigm, discussed effects could greatly simplify the manufacturing process of photonic devices with different functionalities. Moreover, the additional degrees of freedom driven by the conicity open new horizons to tailor light-matter interactions at the nanoscale.

Nonreciprocity of spin waves in the conical helix state.

Project description:Nonreciprocity emerges in nature and in artificial objects from various physical origins, being widely utilized in contemporary technologies as exemplified by diode elements in electronics. While most of the nonreciprocal phenomena are realized by employing interfaces where the inversion symmetry is trivially lifted, nonreciprocal transport of photons, electrons, magnons, and possibly phonons also emerge in bulk crystals with broken space inversion and time reversal symmetries. Among them, directional propagation of bulk magnons (i.e., quanta of spin wave excitation) is attracting much attention nowadays for its potentially large nonreciprocity suitable for spintronic and spin-caloritronic applications. Here, we demonstrate nonreciprocal propagation of spin waves for the conical spin helix state in Cu2OSeO3 due to a combination of dipole and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. The observed nonreciprocal spin dispersion smoothly connects to the hitherto known magnetochiral nonreciprocity in the field-induced collinear spin state; thus, all the spin phases show diode characteristics in this chiral insulator.

Simulations on Monitoring and Evaluation of Plasticity-Driven Material Damage Based on Second Harmonic of S₀ Mode Lamb Waves in Metallic Plates.

Project description:In this study, a numerical approach-the discontinuous Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin-Eshelby Method (MLPGEM)-was adopted to simulate and measure material plasticity in an Al 7075-T651 plate. The plate was modeled in two dimensions by assemblies of small particles that interact with each other through bonding stiffness. The material plasticity of the model loaded to produce different levels of strain is evaluated with the Lamb waves of S₀ mode. A tone burst at the center frequency of 200 kHz was used as excitation. Second-order nonlinear wave was extracted from the spectrogram of a signal receiving point. Tensile-driven plastic deformation and cumulative second harmonic generation of S₀ mode were observed in the simulation. Simulated measurement of the acoustic nonlinearity increased monotonically with the level of tensile-driven plastic strain captured by MLPGEM, whereas achieving this state by other numerical methods is comparatively more difficult. This result indicates that the second harmonics of S0 mode can be employed to monitor and evaluate the material or structural early-stage damage induced by plasticity.

Conical Refraction of Elastic Waves by Anisotropic Metamaterials and Application for Parallel Translation of Elastic Waves.

Project description:Conical refraction, which is quite well-known in electromagnetic waves, has not been explored well in elastic waves due to the lack of proper natural elastic media. Here, we propose and design a unique anisotropic elastic metamaterial slab that realizes conical refraction for horizontally incident longitudinal or transverse waves; the single-mode wave is split into two oblique coupled longitudinal-shear waves. As an interesting application, we carried out an experiment of parallel translation of an incident elastic wave system through the anisotropic metamaterial slab. The parallel translation can be useful for ultrasonic non-destructive testing of a system hidden by obstacles. While the parallel translation resembles light refraction through a parallel plate without angle deviation between entry and exit beams, this wave behavior cannot be achieved without the engineered metamaterial because an elastic wave incident upon a dissimilar medium is always split at different refraction angles into two different modes, longitudinal and shear.

Dynamic interfacial trapping of flexural waves in structured plates.

Project description:The paper presents new results on the localization and transmission of flexural waves in a structured plate containing a semi-infinite two-dimensional array of rigid pins. In particular, localized waves are identified and studied at the interface boundary between the homogeneous part of the flexural plate and the part occupied by rigid pins. A formal connection has been made with the dispersion properties of flexural Bloch waves in an infinite doubly periodic array of rigid pins. Special attention is given to regimes corresponding to standing waves of different types as well as Dirac-like points that may occur on the dispersion surfaces. A single half-grating problem, hitherto unreported in the literature, is also shown to bring interesting solutions.

Focusing on Plates: Controlling Guided Waves using Negative Refraction.

Project description:Elastic waves are guided along finite structures such as cylinders, plates, or rods through reflection, refraction, and mode conversion at the interfaces. Such wave propagation is ubiquitous in the world around us, and studies of elastic waveguides first emerged in the later part of the 19(th) century. Early work on elastic waveguides revealed the presence of backward propagating waves, in which the phase velocity and group velocity are anti-parallel. While backward wave propagation exists naturally in very simple finite elastic media, there has been remarkably little attention paid to this phenomenon. Here we report the development of a tunable acoustic lens in an isotropic elastic plate showing negative refraction over a finite acoustic frequency bandwidth. As compared to engineered acoustic materials such as phononic crystals and metamaterials, the design of the acoustic lens is very simple, with negative refraction obtained through thickness changes rather than internal periodicity or sub-wavelength resonant structures. A new class of acoustic devices, including resonators, filters, lenses, and cloaks, may be possible through topography optimization of elastic waveguide structures to exploit the unique properties of backward waves.

Cloaking, trapping and superlensing of lamb waves with negative refraction.

Project description:We report on experimental and numerical implementations of devices based on the negative refraction of elastic guided waves, the so-called Lamb waves. Consisting in plates of varying thickness, these devices rely on the concept of complementary media, where a particular layout of negative index media can cloak an object with its anti-object or trap waves around a negative corner. The diffraction cancellation operated by negative refraction is investigated by means of laser ultrasound experiments. However, unlike original theoretical predictions, these intriguing wave phenomena remain, nevertheless, limited to the propagating component of the wave-field. To go beyond the diffraction limit, negative refraction is combined with the concept of metalens, a device converting the evanescent components of an object into propagating waves. The transport of an evanescent wave-field is then possible from an object plane to a far-field imaging plane. Twenty years after Pendry's initial proposal, this work thus paves the way towards an elastic superlens.

Comparative Study of Coupling Techniques in Lamb Wave Testing of Metallic and Cementitious Plates.

Project description:Lamb waves have emerged as a valuable tool to examine long plate-like structures in a faster way compared to conventional bulk wave techniques, which make them attractive in non-destructive testing. However, they present a multimodal and dispersive nature, which hinders signal identification. Oblique incidence is one of the most known methods to generate and receive Lamb waves and it is applied in different experimental arrangements with different types of sensors. In this work, several setups were conducted and compared to determine the optimal ones to launch and detect ultrasonic Lamb waves, especially in non-homogeneous specimens. The chosen arrangements were contact with angle beam transducers, immersion in a water tank, localised water coupling using conical containers and air coupling. Plates of two different materials were used, stainless steel and Portland cement mortar. Theoretical and experimental dispersion curves were compared to verify the existence of Lamb modes and good correspondence was achieved.

Symmetry issues in the hybridization of multi-mode waves with resonators: an example with Lamb waves metamaterial.

Project description:Locally resonant metamaterials derive their effective properties from hybridization between their resonant unit cells and the incoming wave. This phenomenon is well understood in the case of plane waves that propagate in media where the unit cell respects the symmetry of the incident field. However, in many systems, several modes with orthogonal symmetries can coexist at a given frequency, while the resonant unit cells themselves can have asymmetric scattering cross-sections. In this paper we are interested in the influence of symmetry breaking on the hybridization of a wave field that includes multiple propagative modes. The A0 and S0 Lamb waves that propagate in a thin plate are good candidates for this study, as they are either anti-symmetric or symmetric. First we designed an experimental setup with an asymmetric metamaterial made of long rods glued to one side of a metallic plate. We show that the flexural resonances of the rods induce a break of the orthogonality between the A0/S0 modes of the free-plate. Finally, based on numerical simulations we show that the orthogonality is preserved in the case of a symmetric metamaterial leading to the presence of two independent polariton curves in the dispersion relation.
