Board social capital and structure, ownership and financial variables of Brazilian companies: A three levels dataset integrating directors, board networks and firm characteristics.

ABSTRACT: This data article incorporates, in an unbalanced panel data, five variables types: financial and market; board structure; board network and social capital; ownership and governance level; the cost of capital. The dataset is formed of 6024 firm-level annual observations based on 622 Brazilian public companies investigated between the years of 2002 and 2015, totaling 56 variables. A three-level data structure was created to allow aggregate directors and network board data into the panel data. Directors' data and adjacency matrix are included to allow for multilevel hierarchical analyzes as well as the use of analytical methods of social networks.

Social Wellbeing, Board-Gender Diversity, and Financial Performance: Evidence From Chinese Fintech Companies.

Project description:The main goal of this study is to investigate the relationship between female representation on board of directors and financial performance, using evidence from Chinese fintech companies, which are providing financial services using cutting-edge technologies. This research used fintech firms listed on the Shanghai and Shenzen Stock Exchange from 2010 to 2019 to test the research questions using regression analyses by SPSS v26. According to the data, the Blau index has a large and negative influence on Tobin's Q, which demonstrates that gender diversity harms the performance of Chinese enterprises. Furthermore, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is found to have a significant and positive moderating influence on Tobin's Q, implying that the adoption of CSR converts a negative to a positive effect. Diversified board members can improve the organization's control and monitoring operations, and female-represented board of directors can participate in the CSR activities that contribute to the organization's performance. The study contributes to the research of gender diversity by providing evidence that women on board of directors enhance firm performance, and the moderating function of CSR is examined with the link of female participation on the board of directors and financial performance.

A comprehensive dataset of board of directors attributes of Pakistan stock exchange listed non-financial firms.

Project description:The data set of this article is related to the paper "Do Board of Directors' Characteristics Matter in Restraining Earnings Manipulation? Empirical Evidence from Pakistan Stock Exchange" Khan and Kamal, (2021) [1]. This data article presents the raw data of 315 non-financial listed firms of the Pakistan Stock Exchange (hereafter, PSX). The data relating to the Board of Directors has been manually extracted from 1890 annual reports of the concerned companies and the financial data were extracted from State Bank of Pakistan sources, business-recorder and PSX Data portal. The dataset is an unbalanced panel data consisting of 1882 firms' year's observations from 2014 to 2019 based on 315 non-financial listed firms consists of 20 variables. This paper's dataset is valid and useful for researchers/scholars in many ways such as linking the board of directors to corporate governance, internal governance vs external governance, audit quality, financial reporting quality, firm performance, industry performance, corporate social responsibility and government regulation.

An attention embedded DUAL-LSTM method for financial risk early warning of the three new board-listed companies

Project description:Computer and financial fields are both involved in the interdisciplinary topic of financial risk early warning. We suggest an attention-embedded dual Long Short Term Memory (DUAL-LSTM) for the financial risk early warning to deal with the potential and constraints of rapid economic development to improve the precision of the financial risk prediction for the listed businesses on the New Third Board. First, feature fusion attentionally quantifies data characteristics, increasing the robustness and generalizability of data features. The model’s predictive power is then increased by creating a dual LSTM model to meet the financial risk. The studies show that the attention-embedded dual LSTM model can achieve 96.9% of the F value scores and is superior to state-of-the-art model (SOTA) such as the Z-score model, Fisher discriminant method, logistic regression, and Back-Propagation network, achieves the advantage of time series in financial risk prediction. Additionally, for predicting financial risk, our algorithm performs flawlessly and effectively.

Effects of board gender and foreign directorship on the financial sustainability of Saudi listed firms: Does family ownership matter?

Project description:This study investigates how family ownership may influence the effects of board gender and foreign directorship on the financial sustainability. The panel data of 103 Saudi non-financial listed companies from 2013 to 2022 was analyzed using fixed effects, and the generalized method of moments (GMM) was used for robustness test. The research findings suggest a strong and positive effect of foreign directorship on financial sustainability, consistent with the resource dependency view and agency theory. However, board gender exerts a negative and significant influence, contradicting existing theories. Further, the moderation results show that family ownership positively moderates the effects of both board gender and foreign directorship on financial sustainability. This positive moderating result supports the agency theory's argument that robust and stringent monitoring of corporate ownership may complement boards' functions and boost organizational efficiency. The policy decision of the findings is that setting corporate boards with a considerable ratio of foreign directors may lead to sustainable performance. Also, it implies that family ownership seems to be an essential mechanism that can neutralize the adverse effects of boardroom diversity on outcomes.

Does intellectual capital efficiency measured by modified value-added intellectual coefficient affect the financial performance of insurance companies in Ethiopia?

Project description:Insurance company managers and shareholders should be conscious of the effect of intellectual capital efficiency and its components on financial performance. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of intellectual capital efficiency and its components on the financial performance of insurance companies. To achieve study objectives Modified value-added intellectual coefficient is adopted to measure the effect of intellectual capital efficiency. The study adopted an explanatory research design with an arrangement of secondary data analysis via document analysis, quantitative approach, and deductive method of inquiry. Panel data was used with a sample of 14 insurance companies from 2012-2022. Descriptive and regression analyses were performed to analyze the data using STATA version 15.0. Econometric model estimation procedures and multiple regression assumptions were tested accordingly. The random effect regression result revealed that the value-added intellectual capital and its component human capital and capital employed efficiency have a positive significance association with financial performance. Whereas, relational capital efficiency and structural capital efficiency do not have a significant contribution to the financial performance of insurance sectors in Ethiopia. The findings of this study contribute to the theoretical and practical understanding of the relationship between intellectual capital efficiency and financial performance in the context of insurance companies in Ethiopia.

Government financial support and firm productivity in vietnam.

Project description:Using the Färe-Primont index and instrumental variable fixed effect estimation for the data of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), this study considers if receiving government financial support enables SMEs in Vietnam to become more productive. The paper discovers no evidence of linkage between financial support and firm productivity. However, access to financial support improves technological progress and growth in firm scale but has a negative effect on improvement in technical efficiency. The estimation results reveal that the use of productivity as an aggregated index in previous studies may hide the real effect of government support on firm productivity.

COVID-19, insurer board utility, and capital regulation.

Project description:This paper develops a down-and-out call option model by introducing a structural break in volatility to capture the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The life insurer's equity and its board's utility are evaluated at the optimal guaranteed rate in the equity maximization. Results suggest that the seriousness degree of the COVID-19 outbreak and capital regulation enhance the optimal guaranteed rate and the board's utility. Increased the board's utility by increasing liabilities costs insurer profitability. Conflicts of incentives can arise during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Measuring intellectual capital with financial data.

Project description:Intellectual capital is defined as the set of intangible assets that generate value for the company. Normally, the models that measure the intellectual capital make use of investments in intangible assets, as indicators of the generation of value by the company; or are based on a holistic measure, using another focus to validate. This research proposes a new method to measure intellectual capital, reconciling the use of financial measures for the management of intellectual capital and its antecedents in triangulated indices; it also determines relationship path coefficients, between constructs developed from a general conceptual model, based on the academic and professional literature. The proposed method combines component indicators with holistic indicators using a structural equation model, allowing differentiating the components of intellectual capital from the stock of intellectual capital. The method is applied to more than 1,600 European companies from 2004 to 2015 to assess its validity, presenting the monetary value of intellectual capital in these companies. The results allow a comparison of the situation of intellectual capital in companies in different countries and industries, opening an opportunity to disclosure intellectual capital.

Data driven analysis of social capital in Farmer Producer Companies.

Project description:The Farmer Producer Company (FPC), a subset of the Farmer Producer Organization (FPO), is an important institutional form designed to organize farmer groups towards better coordinated farming and marketing. In the Indian context, as FPCs have emerged as new forms of members-led agribusiness, their ability to identify prevailing social ties and tap them effectively towards business growth needs to be better understood. Although social capital is studied broadly for its potential to drive organizational performance, it has been poorly researched in farmer collectives such as FPCs. The current work examines the effect of social capital on benefits and business performance at the level of member groups in FPCs. An empirical analysis was conducted in which two FPCs, which differed significantly in their mobilization strategies, farming methods, and supply chain linkages, were surveyed. Data collected from the surveys were visualized and clustering analysis was carried out using Self Organizing Maps (SOM), an unsupervised Artificial Neural Network (ANN) tool. Insights from clustering reveal the importance of pre-existing social ties, leadership, participation in group activities and the geographical affinity of groups in benefits realization and business performance of FPCs. The importance of bottom-up approaches in establishing robust supply chain linkages in emerging FPCs was keyed out through this work. The inferences through SOM, distilled strategies for FPCs' stakeholders in prioritizing interventions for member groups and in generating broader implications for policy makers accounting social capital in new institutional models.
