Survey data on inter-firm linkages and innovation activities of Chinese manufacturing SMEs.

ABSTRACT: The data presented in this article is based on a questionnaire survey regarding the inter-firm linkages and innovation activities of Chinese manufacturing SMEs. A valid sample of 420 SMEs was collected, covering six manufacturing industries. The data involves the inter-firm linkages, innovation performance, R&D intensity, IT adoption, and other demographic indicators of the sampling firms. In this data article, we also briefly present the subject area, background of data source, survey process, scale of data, value of data, and main methods used to analyze the data.

Business model innovation and firm performance: Evidence from manufacturing SMEs

Project description:In the current volatile business environment, companies are obliged to search for new ways of doing business to remain competitive. Accordingly, firms innovate their business model as it became a promising strategy to achieve sustainable outcomes. However, there is still a need for empirical studies that examine the relationship between business model innovation (BMI) and the performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In this study, we aimed to investigate this relationship by collecting data from 264 manufacturing SMEs through structured questionnaires. We employed partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to analyze the collected data and test the hypotheses. The results indicated that changes in any component of the business model, namely value creation, value proposition, or value capture, had a positive and significant relationship with the performance of manufacturing SMEs. Therefore, by innovating their business models, firms can create more value for their customers while capturing value for themselves. In conclusion, increasing use value or decreasing exchange value with customers will help firms create more value and surpass competitors in the marketplace, while also allowing them to capture more value for themselves.

Indicators on firm level innovation activities from web scraped data.

Project description:This article presents data on companies' innovative behavior measured at the firm-level based on web scraped firm-level data derived from medium-high and high-technology companies in the European Union and the United Kingdom. The data are retrieved from individual company websites and contains in total data on 96,921 companies. The data provide information on various aspects of innovation, most significantly the research and development orientation of the company at the company and product level, the company's collaborative activities, company's products, and use of standards. In addition to the web scraped data, the dataset aggregates a variety firm-level indicators including patenting activities. In total, the dataset includes 21 variables with unique identifiers which enables connecting to other databases such as financial data.

Supply chain finance and innovation efficiency: An empirical analysis based on manufacturing SMEs.

Project description:This paper firstly demonstrates the positive and negative effects of supply chain finance on the innovation efficiency of China's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing industry from the theoretical point of view. Based on the data of 267 manufacturing companies in China Growth Enterprise Market from 2015 to 2019, the DEA-SBM method was used to measure the comprehensive innovation efficiency of different companies, and it was further decomposed into technological innovation efficiency and organizational innovation efficiency. Afterwards, it conducts an empirical analysis through the double fixed effect model, and explores the difference in the impact of supply chain finance on innovation efficiency in enterprises with different industries and different property rights. The results show that supply chain financial services have a strong positive impact on the comprehensive innovation efficiency, technological innovation efficiency and organizational innovation efficiency of manufacturing SMEs. Further, supply chain finance has the most significant improvement on the technological innovation efficiency of the sample of private traditional enterprises, but it has a significant inhibitory effect on the organizational innovation efficiency of the sample of state-owned high-tech enterprises. Therefore, this paper suggests that the development of supply chain financial services should increase support for traditional manufacturing industries; appropriately tilt resources to private enterprises; improve relevant supply chain financial laws and regulations, establish and improve corresponding institutional arrangements, and encourage state-owned enterprises to participate in market competition.

Relocation, innovation, and the difference that firm size makes: Insights for global sourcing strategies of SMEs

Project description:Although small and medium-sized enterprises increasingly utilize global sourcing strategies which involve the spatial relocation of their business activities, little is known about the effects of these strategies on firm performance—particularly firm innovativeness. Here, we analyze if alternative relocation strategies, specifically domestic and international relocations, differ in their performance effects on firm innovativeness by firm size and organizational configuration. Our econometric approach uses detailed micro data for German firms, and the empirical findings indicate that both product and process innovation rates negatively respond to international but not domestic relocations. Effects are more pronounced for smaller firms and are mainly associated with outsourcing arrangements. Only for large firms we observe a positive association between relocation and firm innovativeness. This indicates that short- to mid-run organizational costs associated with relocation activities can generally be better covered by larger firms. Innovation indicators based on firm websites-Which website characteristics predict firm-level innovation activity?

Project description:Web-based innovation indicators may provide new insights into firm-level innovation activities. However, little is known yet about the accuracy and relevance of web-based information for measuring innovation. In this study, we use data on 4,487 firms from the Mannheim Innovation Panel (MIP) 2019, the German contribution to the European Community Innovation Survey (CIS), to analyze which website characteristics perform as predictors of innovation activity at the firm level. Website characteristics are measured by several data mining methods and are used as features in different Random Forest classification models that are compared against each other. Our results show that the most relevant website characteristics are textual content, the use of English language, the number of subpages and the amount of characters on a website. In our main analysis, models using all website characteristics jointly yield AUC values of up to 0.75 and increase accuracy scores by up to 18 percentage points compared to a baseline prediction based on the sample mean. Moreover, predictions with website characteristics significantly differ from baseline predictions according to a McNemar test. Results also indicate a better performance for the prediction of product innovators and firms with innovation expenditures than for the prediction of process innovators.

Entrepreneurial orientation and supply chain resilience of manufacturing SMEs in Yemen: the mediating effects of absorptive capacity and innovation.

Project description:Literature has revealed, recently, the importance of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) for supply chain resilience (SCR); however, doubts remain as to how EO could improve SCR exist due to the vagueness surrounding it. We examine absorptive capacity (AC) and innovation as two mechanisms that mediate the EO-SCR relationship. An empirical analysis was made of the proposed model, based upon survey data for 171 manufacturing SMEs in the Sana'a region, Yemen, using a structural equation model (SEM) with the SmartPLS. The results obtained have shown that EO positively affects SCR for SMEs and, most significantly, this relationship is indirect as it is fully mediated by AC and innovation. The findings have revealed that EO improves SCR when those firms make efforts in developing AC and innovation. EO is significant, but it may not be sufficient to improve SCR if the firm is unable to absorb external knowledge and innovate.

Temporary business model innovation – SMEs’ innovation response to the Covid‐19 crisis

Project description:The Covid‐19 crisis has hit SMEs particularly hard. Numerous business models (BM) have been limited or rendered downright impossible due to decreased social contact. SMEs can respond to this exogenous crisis via temporary business model innovation (BMI). This empirical study investigates these temporary BMs using a multiple case study approach based on five SMEs in Austria, Germany, and Liechtenstein who within a short period of time applied their core competencies and networks to integrate new BMs, which were in some cases very different from existing ones. These had a positive effect on strategic flexibility, and if desired can also be incorporated into the firm long‐term. The paper contributes to SME crisis management during the Covid‐19 pandemic by pointing out and developing a successful management mechanism that allows to survive a crisis or even improve during this time. Moreover, we contribute to BMI literature by explaining temporary BMI as a new form of BMI. It also makes clear to managers that temporary BMs add value to firms and create new revenue streams.

Assessing the Empirical Linkage Among Access to Finance, Firm Quality, and Firm Performance: New Insight From Bangladeshi SMEs'.

Project description:Access to finance plays a central pillar on the sustainable firm growth of developing and developed nations. This study depicts the linkage between access to external finance, firm quality, and firms' performance as measured by labor productivity for sustainable small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs') development by employing the ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and propensity score matching (PSM) techniques to alleviate the selection bias and endogeneity issue on Word bank enterprise survey (WBES) cross-sectional firm-level data of 3,196 Bangladeshi SMEs for 2007-2013 period. Empirical evidence linking access to external finance and labor productivity has been positive and significant. However, our finding explores a negative but significant relationship between exports and SME labor productivity. A further look into the results also exhibits no statistical significance in the interaction effect between firm quality and access to finance on labor productivity. Moreover, the study anticipates novel empirical support that, the disintegration effect of export sales between direct and indirect exports with labor productivity for credit-accessed firms, is also found statistically insignificant. Then, several policies are drawn from the results to gain international competitiveness, and to ensure more external finance channels for enhancing SMEs' performance and sustainable firm growth.

Linking data-driven innovation to firm performance: a theoretical framework and case analysis.

Project description:This paper examines the impact of data-driven innovation (DDI) on firm performance, based on an exploratory case study of a manufacturing firm in China's textile and apparel industry. It explores the influence of various contextual variables on the firm's DDI and suggests ways to enhance DDI and thereby firm performance. Extending the literature on DDI, the paper proposes and validates a theoretical framework that incorporates the influence of various contextual factors on firms' DDI. The findings show that (1) individual context is associated with DDI; (2) organizational context is associated with DDI; and (3) DDI is associated with firm performance. This paper extends our understanding of how firm performance can be improved through DDI and shows that DDI should match a firm's contextual environment.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s10479-022-05038-y.

Process-Structure Linkages Using a Data Science Approach: Application to Simulated Additive Manufacturing Data.

Project description:A novel data science workflow is developed and demonstrated to extract process-structure linkages (i.e., reduced-order model) for microstructure evolution problems when the final microstructure depends on (simulation or experimental) processing parameters. This workflow consists of four main steps: data pre-processing, microstructure quantification, dimensionality reduction, and extraction/validation of process-structure linkages. Methods that can be employed within each step vary based on the type and amount of available data. In this paper, this data-driven workflow is applied to a set of synthetic additive manufacturing microstructures obtained using the Potts-kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) approach. Additive manufacturing techniques inherently produce complex microstructures that can vary significantly with processing conditions. Using the developed workflow, a low-dimensional data-driven model was established to correlate process parameters with the predicted final microstructure. Additionally, the modular workflows developed and presented in this work facilitate easy dissemination and curation by the broader community.
