Embodied visual perception of distorted finger postures.

ABSTRACT: Bodily abnormalities in other persons often evoke an uneasy feeling, even disgust. Here, we studied the brain basis of such perceptual salience by presenting static pictures of distorted hand postures to healthy subjects during functional magnetic resonance imaging. Cortical activation sensitive to distorted (vs. natural) finger postures was found-with right-hemispheric dominance-in the primary motor cortex, postcentral somatosensory areas, amygdala, and insula, and bilaterally in the putamen. This activation pattern suggests that the instantaneous "gut feelings" during the observation of bodily distortions in others are related to embodied percepts that also involve affect-related brain areas.

Lateralized occipito-temporal N1 responses to images of salient distorted finger postures.

Project description:For humans as social beings, other people's hands are highly visually conspicuous. Exceptionally striking are hands in other than natural configuration which have been found to elicit distinct brain activation. Here we studied response strength and lateralization of this activation using event-related potentials (ERPs), in particular, occipito-temporal N1 responses as correlates of activation in extrastriate body area. Participants viewed computer-generated images of hands, half of them showing distorted fingers, the other half showing natural fingers. As control stimuli of similar geometric complexity, images of chairs were shown, half of them with distorted legs, half with standard legs. The contrast of interest was between distorted and natural/standard stimuli. For hands, stronger N1 responses were observed for distorted (vs natural) stimuli from 170 ms post stimulus. Such stronger N1 responses were found for distorted hands and absent for distorted chairs, therefore likely unrelated to visuospatial processing of the unusual distorted shapes. Rather, N1 modulation over both hemispheres - but robustly right-lateralized - could reflect distorted hands as emotionally laden stimuli. The results are in line with privileged visual processing of hands as highly salient body parts, with distortions engaging neural resources that are especially activated for biological stimuli in social perception.

Distorted time perception in patients with neurocognitive impairment.

Project description:BackgroundTime perception is known to be distorted in patients with neuropsychiatric disorders. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the correlation between cognitive decline and time distortion by examining time perception in participants with neurocognitive impairment (Alzheimer's disease [AD], vascular dementia [VD], and Parkinson's disease dementia [PDD]) compared to those with subjective cognitive impairment (SCI).MethodsOverall, 569 participants with cognitive decline complaints between 2013 and 2022 were investigated. Participants were subjected to a verbal estimation task, time production task, time comparison task, and neuropsychological assessments.ResultsTime perception abilities were distorted in patients with neurocognitive impairment compared to those with SCI. Despite similar educational backgrounds, the vascular cognitive impairment (VCI)/VD group demonstrated the lowest MMSE scores (22.4 ± 4.2, p-value <0.001) and larger time-estimation errors. Patients with VCI/VD significantly underestimated time in the 35-s (19.6 ± 12.6s) and 60-s (28.7 ± 19.9s) tasks. In the time production task, patients with VCI/VD produced shorter times in their 15-s (12.7 ± 4.3; p-value = 0.001), 30-s (23.6 ± 8.3; p value < 0.001), and 60-s (43.8 ± 18.9; p-value <0.001) trials. In the time comparison task, the VCI/VD group had significantly fewer correct answers than that in the SCI groups (6.0 ± 1.3 vs. 7.1 ± 0.9, p-value <0.001). Correlation analysis revealed that multiple cognitive functions are involved in the time perception tasks.ConclusionsPatients with VCI/VD had the poorest time perception. These findings may provide a modest contribution to understanding the underlying pathophysiology and psychological connections related to temporal abilities in time perception.

Project description:Body postures provide information about others' actions, intentions, and emotions. Little is known about how postures are represented in the visual system. Considering our extensive visual and motor experience with body postures, we hypothesized that priors derived from this experience may systematically bias visual body posture representations. We examined two priors: gravity and biomechanical constraints. Gravity pushes body parts downward, while biomechanical constraints limit the range of possible postures (e.g., an arm raised far behind the head cannot go down further). Across three experiments (N = 246), we probed participants' visual memory of briefly presented postures using change discrimination and adjustment tasks. Results showed that lifted arms were misremembered as lower and as more similar to the nearest biomechanically plausible postures. Inverting the body stimuli eliminated both biases, ruling out visual confounds. These findings show that visual memory representations of body postures are modulated by a combination of category-general and category-specific priors.

Deformation of the median nerve at different finger postures and wrist angles.

Project description:BackgroundThe objective of this study was to evaluate the changes of the median nerve cross-sectional area (MNCSA) and diameters of the median nerve at different finger postures and wrist angles.MethodsTwenty-five healthy male participants were recruited in this study. The median nerve at wrist crease was examined at six finger postures, and repeated with the wrist in 30° flexion, neutral (0°), and 30° extension. The six finger postures are relaxed, straight finger, hook, full fist, tabletop, and straight fist.ResultsThe main effects of both finger postures and wrist angles are significant (p < 0.05) on changes of the MNCSA. Different finger tendon gliding postures cause a change in the MNCSA. Furthermore, wrist flexion and extension cause higher deformation of the MNCSA at different finger postures.DiscussionThe median nerve parameters such as MNCSA and diameter were altered by a change in wrist angle and finger posture. The results may help to understand the direct biomechanical stresses on the median nerve by different wrist-finger activities.

Avian-inspired embodied perception in biohybrid flapping-wing robotics.

Project description:Avian feather intricate adaptable architecture to wing deformations has catalyzed interest in feathered flapping-wing aircraft with high maneuverability, agility, and stealth. Yet, to mimic avian integrated somatic sensation within stringent weight constraints, remains challenging. Here, we propose an avian-inspired embodied perception approach for biohybrid flapping-wing robots. Our feather-piezoelectric mechanoreceptor leverages feather-based vibration structures and flexible piezoelectric materials to refine and augment mechanoreception via coupled oscillator interactions and robust microstructure adhesion. Utilizing convolutional neural networks with the grey wolf optimizer, we develop tactile perception of airflow velocity and wing flapping frequency proprioception. This method also senses pitch angle via airflow direction and detects wing morphology through feather collisions. Our low-weight, accurate perception of flapping-wing robot flight states is validated by motion capture. This investigation constructs a biomechanically integrated embodied perception system in flapping-wing robots, which holds significant promise in reflex-based control of complex flight maneuvers and natural bird flight surveillance.

DOWNREGULATION OF SPLICING REGULATOR RBFOX1 COMPROMISES VISUAL DEPTH PERCEPTION

Project description:Rbfox1 is a splicing regulator that has been associated with various neurological conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, mental retardation, epilepsy, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and schizophrenia. We show that in adult rodent retinas, Rbfox1 is expressed in all types of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) as well as in certain subsets of amacrine cells (ACs) within the inner nuclear and ganglion cell layers. In developing retinas, Rbfox1 can be detected as early as E12. At that age, Rbfox1 is localized in the cytoplasm of differentiated RGCs. Between P0 and P5, strong expression of Rbfox1 in the inner plexiform layer was observed. This coincided with switching of Rbfox1 localization in RGC somas from cytoplasmic to a predominantly nuclear. Dynamic changes in Rbfox1 expression during first 10 postnatal days are correlated with the stage II spontaneous retinal waves of excitation, which in mice begins around the time of birth and continues for as long as two weeks. By P10, dendritic staining of Rbfox1 was dramatically reduced and remained so in the fully developed retina. In Rbfox1 knockout (KO) animals no detectable changes in retinal gross morphology were observed two months after Rbfox1 downregulation. However, the visual cliff test revealed marked abnormalities of depth perception of these animals. Retinal transcriptome analysis of Rbfox1 KO mice identified a number of genes that are involved in establishing neural circuits and synaptic transmission, including Vamp1, Vamp2, Snap25, Trak2, and Slc1A7, suggesting a role of Rbfox1 in the regulation of genes that facilitate AC and RGC synaptic communication.

Exploring the interactions among SNARC effect, finger counting direction and embodied cognition.

Project description:The Spatial Numerical Association of Response Code (SNARC) is the preferential association between smaller/larger magnitudes and left/right side, respectively. Some evidence suggest a link between SNARC and a left-to-right finger counting habit. We asked 268 participants to show how they use the hands to count from 1 to 10. By means of this ecological task, 80% of the sample use first the right hand (to count from 1 to 5) and the majority of them use a palm-up posture. In Experiment 2 (N = 46) right-starters were asked to categorize 1-to-5 magnitudes as even or odd, using the left and right hand. Stimuli were presented both as Arabic numbers and by means of left and right hand photographs in palm-up and palm-down posture. Results confirmed the expected SNARC effect in the Arabic condition. With hand images we found that right hand responses were better for larger than for smaller magnitudes (SNARC, mainly for left hand palm-up stimuli), showing that the SNARC can be generalized to different codes. Finally, the interactions between magnitudes and left/right hand images in palm-up and palm-down posture suggest that embodied cognition can influence numerical processing.

Keep your finger on the pulse: Better rate perception and gap detection with vibrotactile compared to visual stimuli.

Project description:Important characteristics of the environment can be represented in the temporal pattern of sensory stimulation. In two experiments, we compared accuracy of temporal processing by different modalities. Experiment 1 examined binary categorization of rate for visual (V) or vibrotactile (T) stimulus pulses presented at either 4 or 6 Hz. Inter-pulse intervals were either constant or variable, perturbed by random Gaussian variates. Subjects categorized the rate of T pulse sequences more accurately than V sequences. In V conditions only, subjects disproportionately tended to mis-categorize 4-Hz pulse rates, for all but the most variable sequences. In Experiment 2, we compared gap detection thresholds across modalities, using the same V and T pulses from Experiment 1, as well as with bimodal (VT) pulses. Visual gap detection thresholds were larger (3[Formula: see text]) than tactile thresholds. Additionally, performance with VT stimuli seemed to be nearly completely dominated by their T components. Together, these results suggest (i) that vibrotactile temporal acuity surpasses visual temporal acuity, and (ii) that vibrotactile stimulation has considerable, untapped potential to convey temporal information like that needed for eyes-free alerting signals.

Combining virtual reality and tactile stimulation to investigate embodied finger-based numerical representations.

Project description:Finger-based representation of numbers is a high-level cognitive strategy to assist numerical and arithmetic processing in children and adults. It is unclear whether this paradigm builds on simple perceptual features or comprises several attributes through embodiment. Here we describe the development and initial testing of an experimental setup to study embodiment during a finger-based numerical task using Virtual Reality (VR) and a low-cost tactile stimulator that is easy to build. Using VR allows us to create new ways to study finger-based numerical representation using a virtual hand that can be manipulated in ways our hand cannot, such as decoupling tactile and visual stimuli. The goal is to present a new methodology that can allow researchers to study embodiment through this new approach, maybe shedding new light on the cognitive strategy behind the finger-based representation of numbers. In this case, a critical methodological requirement is delivering precisely targeted sensory stimuli to specific effectors while simultaneously recording their behavior and engaging the participant in a simulated experience. We tested the device's capability by stimulating users in different experimental configurations. Results indicate that our device delivers reliable tactile stimulation to all fingers of a participant's hand without losing motion tracking quality during an ongoing task. This is reflected by an accuracy of over 95% in participants detecting stimulation of a single finger or multiple fingers in sequential stimulation as indicated by experiments with sixteen participants. We discuss possible application scenarios, explain how to apply our methodology to study the embodiment of finger-based numerical representations and other high-level cognitive functions, and discuss potential further developments of the device based on the data obtained in our testing.
