Working Desks as a Classification Tool for Personality Style: A Pilot Study for Validation.

ABSTRACT: We shape our surroundings; form the rooms we live in, so that we feel comfortable in them. This shows parts of our personality - it can be inferred from our environment. In this study, we created stereotypical desks embodying different personality styles and let 190 students choose which desk fits - in their subjective perspective - the most to their personality. To determine their personality style, the personality style and disorder inventory (PSSI) was used. Correspondence analysis (CA) was conducted to investigate the relationship between personality styles and choice of desks. Results did not show convergence of personality styles and desks. Contrary to the popular scientific idea, personality and creation of surroundings were not related; regarding our study, the relation is uninterpretable suggesting an individual's desk choice is not statistically dependent on one's individual's highest PSSI subscale. The study can be regarded as a pilot project for desk designs as classification tool for personality.

Project description:BackgroundClinical and laboratory parameters can aid in the early identification of neonates at risk for bacteremia before clinical deterioration occurs. However, current prediction models have poor diagnostic capabilities. The objective of this study was to develop, evaluate and validate a screening tool for late onset (> 72 h post admission) neonatal bacteremia using common laboratory and clinical parameters; and determine its predictive value in the identification of bacteremia.MethodsA retrospective chart review of neonates admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) between March 1, 2012 and January 14, 2015 and a prospective evaluation of all neonates admitted between January 15, 2015 and March 30, 2015 were completed. Neonates with late-onset bacteremia (> 72 h after NICU admission) were eligible for inclusion in the bacteremic cohort. Bacteremic patients were matched to non-infected controls on several demographic parameters. A Pearson's Correlation matrix was completed to identify independent variables significantly associated with infection (p < 0.05, univariate analysis). Significant parameters were analyzed using iterative binary logistic regression to identify the simplest significant model (p < 0.05). The predictive value of the model was assessed and the optimal probability cut-off for bacteremia was determined using a Receiver Operating Characteristic curve.ResultsMaximum blood glucose, heart rate, neutrophils and bands were identified as the best predictors of bacteremia in a significant binary logistic regression model. The model's sensitivity, specificity and accuracy were 90, 80 and 85%, respectively, with a false positive rate of 20% and a false negative rate of 9.7%. At the study bacteremia prevalence rate of 51%, the positive predictive value, negative predictive value and negative post-test probability were 82, 89 and 11%, respectively.ConclusionThe model developed in the current study is superior to currently published neonatal bacteremia screening tools. Validation of the tool in a historic data set of neonates from our institution will be completed.

Project description:ObjectivesThis study aimed to understand the personality characteristics of emergency medicine (EM) residents and assess consistency and variations among residency programs.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, a convenience sample of residents (N = 140) at five EM residency programs in the United States completed three personality assessments: the Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI)-describing usual tendencies; the Hogan Development Survey (HDS)-describing tendencies under stress or fatigue; and the Motives, Values, and Preferences Inventory (MVPI)-describing motivators. Differences between EM residents and a normative population of U.S. physicians were examined with one-sample t-tests. Differences between EM residents by program were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance tests.ResultsOne-hundred forty (100%), 124 (88.6%), and 121 (86.4%) residents completed the HPI, HDS, and MVPI, respectively. For the HPI, residents scored lower than the norms on the adjustment, ambition, learning approach, inquisitive, and prudence scales. For the HDS, residents scored higher than the norms on the cautious, excitable, reserved, and leisurely scales, but lower on bold, diligent, and imaginative scales. For the MVPI, residents scored higher than the physician population norms on altruistic, hedonistic, and aesthetics scales, although lower on the security and tradition scales. Residents at the five programs were similar on 22 of 28 scales, differing on one of 11 scales of the HPI (interpersonal sensitivity), two of 11 scales of the HDS (leisurely, bold), and three of 10 scales of the MVPI (aesthetics, commerce, and recognition).ConclusionsOur findings suggest that the personality characteristics of EM residents differ considerably from the norm for physicians, which may have implications for medical students' choice of specialty. Additionally, results indicated that EM residents at different programs are comparable in many areas, but moderate variation in personality characteristics exists. These results may help to inform future research incorporating personality assessment into the resident selection process and the training environment.

Project description:Driving style is an important factor in driving psychology, which is useful for effectively evaluating driving behaviors. Exploring driving style in a Chinese sample could help understand the overall situation of Chinese drivers. This study aims to develop a measurement of driving style fit for the Chinese situation and to validate the validity and reliability of this scale. In this study, 296 drivers from China completed the Chinese version of the multidimensional driving style inventory (MDSI), the Big Five Inventory (BFI), and the Driver Behavior Questionnaire (DBQ) as well as several questions about socio-demographic information. After testing the assumed structure by a confirmatory factor analysis, and adjusting the structure, a brief version of Chinese version of MDSI with twelve items categorized into four driving styles, namely, risky style, angry- high-velocity style, careful style and anxious style was revised. The validity and reliability of the scales were acceptable. The results showed that driving styles were closely correlated with self-reported driving behaviors. Specifically, risky style, angry- high-velocity style, and anxious style are all positively associated with dangerous driving behaviors. Meanwhile, careful style was positively associated with positive driving behaviors and negatively correlated with dangerous driving behaviors. Anxious was also found to be negatively associated with fines. For personality, we found a positive relationship between risky, angry- high-velocity, careful and anxious styles and the personality traits that often have negative effects on driving, such as extraversion and neuroticism. Meanwhile, these three styles were negatively correlated with conscientiousness and agreeableness in general. In addition, careful style was positively correlated with conscientiousness and agreeableness. The current study shows convincing evidence for the validity and reliability of the brief MDSI-C and develops a useful tool for identify the driving style of Chinese drivers for future research and relevant departments of road safety.
