Ionic Tuning of Droplet Motion on Water Surface.

ABSTRACT: Herein, the oscillation of an oil droplet on the surface of water is studied. The droplet contains an anionic surfactant that can react with the cations present in water. The oscillation starts after a random motion, and the oscillation pattern apparently depends on the cation species in the water phase. However, a common pattern is included. The cation species only affects the amplitude and frequency and sometimes perturbs the regular pattern owing to the instability at the oil/water interface. This common pattern is explained by a simple model that incorporates the surfactant transport from the droplet to the surrounding water surface. The dependency of the amplitude and frequency on cation species is expressed quantitatively by a single parameter, the product of the amplitude and square of frequency. This parameter depends on the cationic species and can be understood in terms of the spreading coefficient. The simple model successfully explains this dependency.

Droplet motion on a wrinkled PDMS surface with a gradient structural length scale shorter than the droplet diameter.

Project description:Droplet transportation using a wettability gradient surface has attracted much attention owing to applications such as in microfluidic devices. A surface with a spatial structural gradient was prepared through a simple and cost-effective process even though understanding of droplet behavior on the structure was still limited. Here, we report impinging droplet motion on a gradient wrinkled surface. Surfaces were prepared through hard film deposition on soft pre-strained polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with a mask installed with a slit to control the amount of deposition, which is related to the wavelength of the wrinkles. Droplets were impinged with varying position with respect to the structure, and the droplet motion was observed in the direction away from the region under the slit. We found an asymmetric contact angle and alternate motion on both sides of the three-phase contact line during the motion according to the gradient of the wrinkle wavelength. These results may help not only to understand the behavior of droplet impingement on a gradient structural surface but also to further develop applications using directional droplet transfer.

Path-programmable water droplet manipulations on an adhesion controlled superhydrophobic surface.

Project description:Here, we developed a novel and facile method to control the local water adhesion force of a thin and stretchable superhydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate with micro-pillar arrays that allows the individual manipulation of droplet motions including moving, merging and mixing. When a vacuum pressure was applied below the PDMS substrate, a local dimple structure was formed and the water adhesion force of structure was significantly changed owing to the dynamically varied pillar density. With the help of the lowered water adhesion force and the slope angle of the formed dimple structure, the motion of individual water droplets could be precisely controlled, which facilitated the creation of a droplet-based microfluidic platform capable of a programmable manipulation of droplets. We showed that the platform could be used in newer and emerging microfluidic operations such as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy with extremely high sensing capability (10(-15) M) and in vitro small interfering RNA transfection with enhanced transfection efficiency of ~80%.

Quantum Tunneling Facilitates Water Motion across the Surface of Phenanthrene.

Project description:Quantum tunneling is a fundamental phenomenon that plays a pivotal role in the motion and interaction of atoms and molecules. In particular, its influence in the interaction between water molecules and carbon surfaces can have significant implications for a multitude of fields ranging from atmospheric chemistry to separation technologies. Here, we unveil at the molecular level the complex motion dynamics of a single water molecule on the planar surface of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon phenanthrene, which was used as a small-scale carbon surface-like model. In this system, the water molecule interacts with the substrate through weak O-H···π hydrogen bonds, in which phenanthrene acts as the hydrogen-bond acceptor via the high electron density of its aromatic cloud. The rotational spectrum, which was recorded using chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy, exhibits characteristic line splittings as dynamical features. The nature of the internal dynamics was elucidated in great detail with the investigation of the isotope-substitution effect on the line splittings in the rotational spectra of the H218O, D2O, and HDO isotopologues of the phenanthrene-H2O complex. The spectral analysis revealed a complex internal dynamic showing a concerted tunneling motion of water involving its internal rotation and its translation between the two equivalent peripheral rings of phenanthrene. This high-resolution spectroscopy study presents the observation of a tunneling motion exhibited by the water monomer when interacting with a planar carbon surface with an unprecedented level of detail. This can serve as a small-scale analogue for water motions on large aromatic surfaces, i.e., large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and graphene.

A Water Droplet Pinning and Heat Transfer Characteristics on an Inclined Hydrophobic Surface.

Project description:A water droplet pinning on inclined hydrophobic surface is considered and the droplet heat transfer characteristics are examined. Solution crystallization of polycarbonate is carried out to create hydrophobic characteristics on the surface. The pinning state of the water droplet on the extreme inclined hydrophobic surface (0°???????180°, ? being the inclination angle) is assessed. Heat transfer from inclined hydrophobic surface to droplet is simulated for various droplet volumes and inclination angles in line with the experimental conditions. The findings revealed that the hydrophobic surface give rise to large amount of air being trapped within texture, which generates Magdeburg like forces between the droplet meniscus and the textured surface while contributing to droplet pinning at extreme inclination angles. Two counter rotating cells are developed for inclination angle in the range of 0°?<???<?20° and 135°?<???<?180°; however, a single circulation cell is formed inside the droplet for inclination angle of 25°???????135°. The Nusselt number remains high for the range of inclination angle of 45°???????135°. Convection and conduction heat transfer enhances when a single and large circulation cell is formed inside the droplet.

Mobility of A Water Droplet on Liquid Phase of N-Octadecane Coated Hydrophobic Surface.

Project description:A water droplet behavior on the liquid n-octadecane film is investigated. The coating of hydrophobic surface by N-octadecane film provides exchange of wetting state on the surface. The polycarbonate surface is crystallized and the functionalized silica particles are placed on the resulting surface prior to thin film coating of n-octadecane. A high-speed camera is used to monitor dynamic characteristics of the droplet on the inclined film. The findings reveal that deposition of thin n-octadecane film on hydrophobic surface results in reversibly exchange of the wetting state at the surface, which remains hydrophobic when n-octadecane film is in solid phase while it becomes hydrophilic when n-octadecane film liquefies. Droplet transition velocity predicted agrees well with the experimental data. Sliding mode of the water droplet governs droplet transition on the liquid surface. Droplet pinning force, due to interfacial tension, dominates over the other retention forces including drag and shear.

Simulating droplet motion on virtual leaf surfaces.

Project description:A curvilinear thin film model is used to simulate the motion of droplets on a virtual leaf surface, with a view to better understand the retention of agricultural sprays on plants. The governing model, adapted from Roy et al. (2002 J. Fluid Mech. 454, 235-261 (doi:10.1017/S0022112001007133)) with the addition of a disjoining pressure term, describes the gravity- and curvature-driven flow of a small droplet on a complex substrate: a cotton leaf reconstructed from digitized scan data. Coalescence is the key mechanism behind spray coating of foliage, and our simulations demonstrate that various experimentally observed coalescence behaviours can be reproduced qualitatively. By varying the contact angle over the domain, we also demonstrate that the presence of a chemical defect can act as an obstacle to the droplet's path, causing break-up. In simulations on the virtual leaf, it is found that the movement of a typical spray size droplet is driven almost exclusively by substrate curvature gradients. It is not until droplet mass is sufficiently increased via coalescence that gravity becomes the dominating force.

Surface-active ionic liquids for palladium-catalysed cross coupling in water: effect of ionic liquid concentration on the catalytically active species.

Project description:We report the design and synthesis of surface-active ionic liquids for application in palladium-catalyzed cross coupling reactions. A series of dodecylimidazolium-based ionic liquids were applied as additives in the Heck reaction of ethyl acrylate and iodobenzene, and high yields of >90% could be obtained in water without the addition of further ligands. Our results indicate that the ionic liquid concentration in water is the key factor affecting the formation of the catalytically active species and hence the yield. Moreover, imidazolium-based ionic liquids that are able to form a carbene species differ significantly from conventional cationic surfactants, as a concentration dependent formation of the N-heterocyclic carbene complex was observed.

A Perfect Plastic Material for Studies on Self-Propelled Motion on the Water Surface.

Project description:We describe a novel plastic material composed of camphene, camphor, and polypropylene that seems perfectly suited for studies on self-propelled objects on the water surface. Self-motion is one of the attributes of life, and chemically propelled objects show numerous similarities with animated motion. One of important questions is the relationship between the object shape and its motility. In our previous paper, {R. Löffler et al. PCCP, 2019, 21, 24852-24856}, we presented a novel hybrid material, obtained from the solution of camphor in camphene, that allowed making objects of various shapes. This hybrid material has wax-like mechanical properties, but it has a very high tackiness. Here, we report that a small amount of polypropylene removed this undesirable feature. We investigated the properties of camphor-camphene-polypropylene plastic by performing the statistical analysis of a pill trajectory inside a Petri dish and compared them with those of camphor-camphene wax. The plastic showed the stable character of motion for over an hour-long experiment. The surface activity of objects made of plastic did not significantly depend on the weight ratios of the compounds. Such a significant increase in usefulness came from the polypropylene, which controlled the dissipation of camphor and camphene molecules.
