15 years of the model study course in medicine at the Ruhr University Bochum.

ABSTRACT: The Faculty of Medicine of the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) introduced a model study course in medicine (MSM) in the winter semester 2003. For 9 consecutive years, 42 out of 280 first year students at the Ruhr University Bochum had the opportunity to begin their studies in the model study course in medicine. The places were allocated amongst the applicants internally through a raffle. The MSM was consistently problem-, practice- and patient-oriented and largely did away with lectures, broke with the distinction between a pre-clinical and clinical phase and tested basic knowledge in equivalent integrated exams focusing on clinical application. Following a comparative evaluation of the standard degree course (RSM) and the MSM, the faculty merged the two degree courses into the Integrated Reformed Medical Curriculum (IRMC), which has been on offer since 2013 and is characterized by a topic-oriented hybrid curriculum. This article examines experiences relating to the origins, conception and introduction of the MSM.

Project description:We aimed to investigate the type and frequency of adverse events over 7 days following the first and second BNT162b2 vaccination. This observational and historical cohort study included patients aged 5-11 years who received two doses of BNT162b2 and provided consent along with their guardians. We collected data on sex, age, height, weight, blood type, history of Bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccination, allergic disease, medication, history of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and adverse reactions 7 days following the first and second BNT162b2 vaccination using a questionnaire. Our results were compared with previously reported results for individuals aged 12-15 years. A total of 421 participants were eligible for this study. Among the 216 patients with allergic disease, 48 (22.2%) had experienced worsening of their chronic diseases, and the frequency of fatigue and dizziness after the second dose was higher than that of healthy individuals. The experience of systemic adverse reactions was associated with asthma. The frequency of headache, diarrhea, fatigue, muscle/joint pain, and fever after the second BNT162b2 vaccination was lower in individuals aged 5-11 years than in those aged 12-15 years. Fever was the only systemic adverse reaction that lasted longer than 5 days (1.0% of participants).ConclusionsIndividuals with allergic diseases, who are potentially susceptible to COVID-19, may experience worsening of their chronic diseases and more frequent adverse reactions after BNT162b2 vaccination than healthy individuals. To ensure that children with allergic diseases receive the vaccine safely, further information needs to be collected.What is known• Adverse reactions after BNT162b2 vaccination among individuals aged 5-11 years are generally nonserious, more common after second vaccination, and substantially less common compared to those observed among individuals aged 12-15 years.What is new• Individuals with allergic diseases experienced worsening of their chronic diseases and more frequent adverse reactions after BNT162b2 vaccination than healthy individuals. • Systemic adverse reactions were associated with asthma. Project description:Background: The 2002 Medical Licensure Act gave German universities certain freedoms for reforming their medical degree courses. The Medical Faculty of the University of Cologne took advantage of this opportunity and introduced a model study course in the winter semester 2003/04 through §41 of the Medical Licensure Act. One of the main reasons for this was that back then there was an increasing shortage of doctors in clinical curative medicine and GP primary care. This study investigates whether the introduction of the Cologne Model Study Course (MSG) can show stronger interest in curative medical work (especially General Practice) compared to students of the standard degree course (RSG). Methodology: The proof of added value was examined through graduate surveys conducted at the University of Cologne and through the proportion of students who completed the PY elective rotation "General Practice". The students of the standard degree course (start of studies prior to winter semester 2003/2004) were compared with students of the model study course (start of studies from winter semester 2003/04 onwards). Measurements were carried out using descriptive frequency tables and correlation analyzes according to Spearman. Results: The students' interest in curative medicine was already high (91%) even before the model study course was introduced and increased only slightly (to 91.9%). There is also only a slight increase in specialization in General Practice (RSG=5.9% vs. MSG=9.2%). However, selection of rotations in General Practice was significantly increased (RSG=1.9% vs. MSG=3.4%, r=0.046 **, p<0.005). Conclusion: The Cologne Model Study Course in Human Medicine has increased awareness of the subject of General Practice among students through a large number of curricular changes. The fact that only marginal effects can be demonstrated shows once more the strong dependence of choosing General Medicine as a career path on other factors (such as gender or the presence of positive role models) and emphasizes the necessity of promoting General Practice student education not only through increased curricular mapping but by additional innovative concepts to maximize the status of General Practice from the perspective of students.
