Occurrence data of terrestrial vertebrates of Son Tra Peninsula, Da Nang City, Vietnam.

ABSTRACT: Background:The forest of Son Tra Peninsula was designated as a nature reserve in 1977 and serves as a green lung for Da Nang City. Due to the economic development scheme of Da Nang City, the forest of the peninsula has been disturbed by human activities and by invasive plant species. Moreover, the management board of the nature reserve lacked sufficient data of the species distribution of its biodiversity for developing future management and conservation plans. To provide and enhance knowledge for the distribution of wildlife species in Son Tra Peninsula, we conducted field surveys over two years to collect data on species richness and distribution and then build a biodiversity database for the protected area. New information:The project collected the occurrence data of 145 species of terrestrial vertebrates, accounting for 51.6% of vertebrate species known from the peninsula with total of 900 observations. In addition, distribution data of six threatened species were recorded on the peninsula.

Spoligotyping and whole-genome sequencing analysis of lineage 1 strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Da Nang, Vietnam.

Project description:Spacer oligonucleotide typing (spoligotyping), a widely used, classical genotyping method for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC), is a PCR-based dot-blot hybridization technique to detect the genetic diversity of the direct repeat (DR) region. Of the seven major MTBC lineages in the world, lineage 1 (Indo-Oceanic) mostly corresponds to the East African-Indian (EAI) spoligotype family in East Africa and Southeast Asia.We investigated the genomic features of Vietnamese lineage 1 strains, comparing spoligotype patterns using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data.M. tuberculosis strains isolated in Da Nang, Vietnam were subjected to conventional spoligotyping, followed by WGS analysis using a high-throughput sequencer. Vietnamese lineage 1 strains were further analyzed with other lineage 1 strains obtained from a public database.Indicating a major spoligotype in Da Nang, 86 (46.2%) of the 186 isolates belonged to the EAI family or lineage 1. Although typical EAI4-VNM strains are characterized by the deletion of spacers 26 and 27, 65 (75.6%) showed ambiguous signals on spacer 26. De novo assembly of the entire DR region and in silico spoligotyping analysis suggested the absence of spacer 26, and direct sequencing revealed that the 17th spacer sequence not used for conventional typing, was cross-hybridized to the spacer 26 probe. Vietnamese EAI4-VNM, other EAI-like strains, and those showing a non-EAI pattern lacking many spacers formed a monophyletic group separate from other EAI families in the world.Information about the alignment of spacers in the entire DR region obtained from WGS data provides a clue for the determination of experimentally ambiguous spoligo patterns. WGS data also helped to analyze the hidden relationships between apparently distinct spoligo patterns.

Recyclable waste collection by informal sector in Vietnam: Dataset from Vinh, Nha Trang, Buon Ma Thuot, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi Cities.

Project description:Even though the matter was not widely acknowledged, informal recycling plays a vital role in waste treatment in many developing countries. In Vietnam, the management of waste collection and treatment faces many difficulties, as there is no statistical data or description of the informal sector in waste collection and recycling to clarify their role, their scale, and their capacity. This paper presents the preliminary data processed by informal waste collectors and aggregators in six Vietnamese cities, namely, Vinh, Nha Trang, Buon Ma Thuot, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh, and Hanoi. The surveys were conducted from January 2017 to December 2019 by the JEAI Recycurbs Viet project [1] and then from August 2019 to December 2020 in the framework of the COMPOSE project (2019-2021) [2]. Geographical and sociology data of aggregators will demonstrate the overall background of the presence, spatial allocation, and the establishment process of aggregators in the surveyed cities to find the patterns of establishment and operations of these aggregators. The data will be the basis for the development of policy making on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in Vietnam.

Factors associated with breastfeeding intent among mothers of newborn babies in Da Nang, Viet Nam.

Project description:BackgroundBreastfeeding is recognized as the single most cost-effective intervention to reduce child morbidity and mortality. However, few studies have explored perceived barriers to breastfeeding and factors associated with breastfeeding intent among mothers of newborn babies in Viet Nam. We conducted a study to assess breastfeeding initiation rates, intent to breastfeed exclusively for 6 months or more and perceived barriers to breastfeed among mothers of newborn babies in Da Nang, Viet Nam.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire survey of mothers in the postnatal wards of Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children in central Viet Nam from 10 February 2017 to 24 February 2017, following implementation of the World Health Organization (WHO) Essential Newborn Care (ENC) package.ResultsOf 286 mothers surveyed, 259 (90.6%) initiated breastfeeding; 203/258 (78.7%) within 1 hour (h) of birth. Most (207, 72.4%) mothers indicated intent to breastfeed exclusively for 6 months or more, but this was lower among mothers of preterm babies (82.2% versus 20.0%, p < 0.001) and those without post-secondary school education (74.8% versus 55.6%, p = 0.02). Amongst mothers struggling to establish breastfeeding, 18/27 (66.7%) had a Cesarean section. Planned non-exclusive breastfeeding was mostly (39, 60.9%) motivated by mothers' concern that their milk supply would be insufficient for their baby's growth requirements. Most mothers had good knowledge about the benefits of breastfeeding and indicated strong decision autonomy.ConclusionsWe documented high rates of early breastfeeding establishment and intent to breastfeed exclusively for 6 months or more. This probably reflects high levels of maternal education and successful implementation of the WHO ENC package. Mothers of premature babies may benefit from additional support.

Hotspots of human impact on threatened terrestrial vertebrates.

Project description:Conserving threatened species requires identifying where across their range they are being impacted by threats, yet this remains unresolved across most of Earth. Here, we present a global analysis of cumulative human impacts on threatened species by using a spatial framework that jointly considers the co-occurrence of eight threatening processes and the distribution of 5,457 terrestrial vertebrates. We show that impacts to species are widespread, occurring across 84% of Earth's surface, and identify hotspots of impacted species richness and coolspots of unimpacted species richness. Almost one-quarter of assessed species are impacted across >90% of their distribution, and approximately 7% are impacted across their entire range. These results foreshadow localised extirpations and potential extinctions without conservation action. The spatial framework developed here offers a tool for defining strategies to directly mitigate the threats driving species' declines, providing essential information for future national and global conservation agendas.

New records of megophryids (Amphibia: Anura: Megophryidae) from Son La Province, Vietnam.

Project description:Background:The family Megophryidae is one of the most poorly known groups of amphibians in Son La Province, Vietnam. In the herpetofaunal list of Vietnam in 2009 only two species of megophryids were recorded from this province and recent studies have documented five additional species of Megophryidae from Son La Province. New information:Based on recent field work in northern Vietnam, we report six new provincial records of the family Megophryidae from Son La Province, namely Leptobrachium ailaonicum, Leptobrachella sungi, Megophrys feae, M. jingdongensis, M. microstoma and M. parva. In addition, morphological data were provided for each species, based on newly collected specimens. Our findings bring the species number of the family Megophryidae to 13 in Son La Province.

Transcriptome Analysis of Tra Catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) Early Development Provides Novel Insights for the Terrestrial Adaptation

Project description:Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and tra catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) both belong to the order Siluriformes. Channel catfish does not possess an air-breathing organ (ABO), and thus cannot breathe in the air, while tra catfish is a facultative air-breather and use the swim bladder as its air-breathing organ, which provides for aerial breathing in low oxygen conditions. Tra and channel catfish serve as a great comparative model for studying the transition of life from water to terrestrial living, as well as for understanding genes that are crucial for development of the swim bladder and the function of air-breathing in tra catfish. We selected seven developmental stages in tra catfish for RNA-Seq analysis based on their transition to a stage that could live at 0 ppm oxygen. More than 587 million sequencing clean reads were generated in tra catfish, and a total of 21, 448 unique genes were detected. A comparative genomic analysis was conducted between channel catfish and tra catfish. Gene expression analysis was performed for these tra catfish specific genes. Hypoxia challenge and microtomy experiments collectively suggested that there are critical timepoints for the development of the air-breathing function and swim bladder development stages in tra catfish. Key genes were identified to be the best candidates of genes related to the air-breathing ability in tra catfish. This study provides a large data resource for functional genomic studies in air-breathing function in tra catfish, and sheds light on the adaption of aquatic organisms to the terrestrial environment.

New records and an updated checklist of snakes from Son La Province, Vietnam.

Project description:Background:Son La Province is located in north-western Vietnam and the province contains a large area of 440,000 hectares of natural forest. A wide range of elevations and the complexity of landforms have given this province a great diversity of natural habitats and a high level of biodiversity potential. However, the snake fauna of Son La province is still poorly studied. Previous studies documented 56 species of snakes from this province. New information:As a result of our field surveys in Phu Yen, Song Ma, Thuan Chau and Van Ho districts, we report five species of snakes for the first time from Son La Province, northern Vietnam, namely Boiga cyanea, B. guangxiensis, Lycodon meridionalis (Colubridae), Protobothrops cornutus and P. mucrosquamatus (Viperidae), with novel data about morphological characters. In addition, we provide an updated checklist of 61 snake species from Son La Province. The snake fauna of Son La Province also contains a number of species of conservation concern: 11 species listed in the Red Data Book of Vietnam (2007), four species listed in the IUCN Red List (2020) and four species listed in the Vietnam Governmental Decree No. 06 (2019).

Reproductive costs in terrestrial male vertebrates: insights from bird studies.

Project description:Reproduction requires resources that cannot be allocated to other functions resulting in direct reproductive costs (i.e. trade-offs between current reproduction and subsequent survival/reproduction). In wild vertebrates, direct reproductive costs have been widely described in females, but their occurrence in males remains to be explored. To fill this gap, we gathered 53 studies on 48 species testing direct reproductive costs in male vertebrates. We found a trade-off between current reproduction and subsequent performances in 29% of the species and in every clade. As 73% of the studied species are birds, we focused on that clade to investigate whether such trade-offs are associated with (i) levels of paternal care, (ii) polygyny or (iii) pace of life. More precisely for this third question, it is expected that fast species (i.e. short lifespan, early maturity, high fecundity) pay a cost in terms of survival, whereas slow species (with opposite characteristics) do so in terms of fecundity. Our findings tend to support this hypothesis. Finally, we pointed out the potential confounding effects that should be accounted for when investigating reproductive costs in males and strongly encourage the investigation of such costs in more clades to understand to what extent our results are relevant for other vertebrates.

Life-history connections to rates of aging in terrestrial vertebrates.

Project description:The actuarial senescence (i.e., the rate of increase in adult mortality with age) was related to body mass, development period, and age at sexual maturity across 124 taxonomic families of terrestrial vertebrates. Model selection based on Akaike's information criterion values adjusted for small size showed that the rate of aging decreases with increasing body mass, gestation period, age at maturity, and possession of flight. Among families of mammals, actuarial senescence was related to extrinsic mortality rate (standardized regression coefficient = 0.215), gestation period (-0.217), and age at maturity (-0.553). Although rate of aging in birds also was related to the embryo development period, birds grow several times more rapidly than mammals, and therefore, the connection between rate of early development and rate of aging is unclear. The strong vertebrate-wide relationship between rate of aging, or life span, and age at maturity can be explained by density-dependent feedback of adult survival rate on the recruitment of young individuals into the breeding population. Thus, age at maturity seems to reflect extrinsic mortality, which, in turn, influences selection on mechanisms that postpone physiological and actuarial senescence. Because rate of embryo development influences rate of aging independently of the age at maturity, in a statistical sense, the evolutionary diversification of development and aging seem to be connected in both birds and mammals; however, the linking mechanisms are not known.
