Ni3S2 in Situ Grown on Ni Foam Coupled with Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanotubes as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Solution.

ABSTRACT: Searching for a highly efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline solution is still challenging. In this work, we report a HER electrocatalyst composed of Ni foam, Ni3S2, and nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NF@Ni3S2@NCNTs). The good lattice matching between Ni and Ni3S2, interstitial doping of C and N atoms, and synergistic effect of NCNTs make NF@Ni3S2@NCNTs highly efficient HER electrocatalysts in alkaline solution. NF@Ni3S2@NCNTs exhibit an overpotential of 93.89 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, a Tafel slope of 54 mV dec-1, and superior stability for HER in 1 M KOH solution. Our findings will promote the reasonable design and synthesis of an efficient electrocatalyst for HER in alkaline electrolytes.

Morphology controlled synthesis of 2-D Ni–Ni3S2 and Ni3S2 nanostructures on Ni foam towards oxygen evolution reaction

Project description:Catalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) are at the heart of key renewable energy technologies, and development of non-precious metal catalysts with high activity and stability remain a great challenge in this field. Among various material candidates, metal sulfides are receiving increasing attention. While morphology-dependent catalytic performances are well established in noble metal-based catalysts, relatively little is known for the morphology‒catalytic performance relationship in metal sulfide catalysts. In this study, uniform spider web-like Ni nanosheets–Ni3S2 and honeycomb-like Ni3S2 structures are deposited on nickel foam (Ni3S2/NF) by a facile one-step hydrothermal synthetic route. When used as an oxygen evolution electrode, the spider web-like Ni–Ni3S2/NF with the large exposed surface area shown excellent catalytic activity and stability with an overpotential of ~310 mV to achieve at 10 mA/cm2 and a Tafel slope of 63 mV/dec in alkaline media, which is superior to the honeycomb-like structure without Ni nanosheet. The low Tafel slope of the spider web-like Ni–Ni3S2/NF represents one of the best OER kinetics among nickel sulfide-based OER catalysts. The results point to the fact that performance of the metal sulfide electrocatalysts might be fine-tuned and optimized with morphological controls. Hierarchical Ni-Co-O-C-P hollow tetragonal microtubes grown on Ni foam for efficient overall water splitting in alkaline media.

Project description:Exploring low-cost and highly efficient non-noble bifunctional electrocatalysts with high performances for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for large-scale sustainable energy systems. Herein, the Ni-Co-O-C-P hollow tetragonal microtubes grown on 3D Ni foam (Ni-Co-O-C-P/NF) was synthesized via a one-step solvothermal method and followed by a simple carbon coating and in situ phosphorization treatment. Benefiting from the unique open and hierarchical nano-architectures, the as prepared Ni-Co-O-C-P/NF presents a high activity and durability for both the HER and OER in alkaline media. The overall-water-splitting reaction requires a low cell voltage (1.54 V @ 10 mA cm-2) in 1 M KOH when Ni-Co-O-C-P/NF is used as both the anode and cathode. The highly flexible structure can provide a large amount of exposed active sites and shorten the mass transport distance. Furthermore, bimetallic phosphides also favor the electrocatalysis due to the higher electronic conductivity and the synergetic effect. This work demonstrated a promising bifunctional electrocatalyst for water electrolysis in alkaline media with potential in future applications.

Spinel oxide CoFe2O4 grown on Ni foam as an efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction.

Project description:The effect of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is important in water splitting. In this work, we develop sphere-like morphology spinel oxide CoFe2O4/NF by hydrothermal reaction and calcination, and the diameter of the spheres is about 111.1 nm. The CoFe2O4/NF catalyst exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential of 273 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 78 mV dec-1. The cycling stability of CoFe2O4/NF is remarkable, and it only increased by 5 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm-2 after 3000 cycles. Therefore, this simple method to prepare CoFe2O4/NF can enhance the OER properties of electrocatalysts, which makes CoFe2O4/NF a promising material to replace noble metal-based catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction.

Mo-doped ZnO nanoflakes on Ni-foam for asymmetric supercapacitor applications.

Project description:A single-step hydrothermal route for synthesizing molybdenum doped zinc oxide nanoflakes was employed to accomplish superior electrochemical characteristics, such as a specific capacitance of 2296 F g-1 at current density of 1 A g-1 and negligible loss in specific capacitance of 0.01025 F g-1 after each charge-discharge cycle (up to 8000 cycles). An assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (Mo:ZnO@NF//AC@NF) also exhibited a maximum energy density and power density of 39.06 W h/kg and 7425 W kg-1, respectively. Furthermore, it demonstrated a specific capacitance of 123 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 and retained about 75.6% of its initial capacitance after 8000 cycles. These superior electrochemical characteristics indicate the potential of this supercapacitor for next-generation energy storage devices.

Ni foam electrode solution impregnated with Ni-Fe X (OH) Y catalysts for efficient oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline electrolyzers.

Project description:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a demanding step within the water splitting process for its requirement of a high overpotential. Thus, to overcome this unfavourable kinetics, an efficient catalyst is required to expedite the process. In this context, we report on Ni foam functionalised with low cost iron (Fe) and iron hydroxide (Fe(OH) X ), wet chemically synthesized as OER catalysts. The prepared catalyst based on iron hydroxide precipitate shows a promising performance, exhibiting an overpotential of 270 mV (at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH solution), an efficient Tafel slope of ∼50 mV dec-1 and stable chronopotentiometry. The promising performance of the anode was further reproduced in the overall water splitting reaction with a two electrode cell. The overall reaction requires a lower potential of 1.508 V to afford 10 mA cm-2, corresponding to 81.5% electrical to fuel efficiency.

Ni2P nanocrystals embedded Ni-MOF nanosheets supported on nickel foam as bifunctional electrocatalyst for urea electrolysis.

Project description:It's highly desired but challenging to synthesize self-supporting nanohybrid made of conductive nanoparticles with metal organic framework (MOF) materials for the application in the electrochemical field. In this work, we report the preparation of Ni2P embedded Ni-MOF nanosheets supported on nickel foam through partial phosphidation (Ni2P@Ni-MOF/NF). The self-supporting Ni2P@Ni-MOF/NF was directly tested as electrode for urea electrolysis. When served as anode for urea oxidation reaction (UOR), it only demands 1.41 V (vs RHE) to deliver a current of 100 mA cm-2. And the overpotential of Ni2P@Ni-MOF/NF to reach 10 mA cm-2 for hydrogen evolution reaction HER was only 66 mV, remarkably lower than Ni2P/NF (133 mV). The exceptional electrochemical performance was attributed to the unique structure of Ni2P@Ni-MOF and the well exposed surface of Ni2P. Furthermore, the Ni2P@Ni-MOF/NF demonstrated outstanding longevity for both HER and UOR. The electrolyzer constructed with Ni2P@Ni-MOF/NF as bifunctional electrode can attain a current density of 100 mA cm-2 at a cell voltage as low as 1.65 V. Our work provides new insights for prepare MOF based nanohydrid for electrochemical application.

Implanting Ni-O-VOx sites into Cu-doped Ni for low-overpotential alkaline hydrogen evolution.

Project description:Nickel-based catalysts are most commonly used in industrial alkaline water electrolysis. However, it remains a great challenge to address the sluggish reaction kinetics and severe deactivation problems of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we show a Cu-doped Ni catalyst implanted with Ni-O-VOx sites (Ni(Cu)VOx) for alkaline HER. The optimal Ni(Cu)VOx electrode exhibits a near-zero onset overpotential and low overpotential of 21 mV to deliver -10 mA cm-2, which is comparable to benchmark Pt/C catalyst. Evidence for the formation of Ni-O-VOx sites in Ni(Cu)VOx is established by systematic X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies. The VOx can cause a substantial dampening of Ni lattice and create an enlarged electrochemically active surface area. First-principles calculations support that the Ni-O-VOx sites are superactive and can promote the charge redistribution from Ni to VOx, which greatly weakens the H-adsorption and H2 release free energy over Ni. This endows the Ni(Cu)VOx electrode high HER activity and long-term durability.

Direct One-Step Growth of Bimetallic Ni2Mo3N on Ni Foam as an Efficient Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalyst.

Project description:A simple and economical synthetic route for direct one-step growth of bimetallic Ni2Mo3N nanoparticles on Ni foam substrate (Ni2Mo3N/NF) and its catalytic performance during an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are reported. The Ni2Mo3N/NF catalyst was obtained by annealing a mixture of a Mo precursor, Ni foam, and urea at 600 °C under N2 flow using one-pot synthesis. Moreover, the Ni2Mo3N/NF exhibited high OER activity with low overpotential values (336.38 mV at 50 mA cm-2 and 392.49 mV at 100 mA cm-2) and good stability for 5 h in Fe-purified alkaline electrolyte. The Ni2Mo3N nanoparticle surfaces converted into amorphous surface oxide species during the OER, which might be attributed to the OER activity.

Nitrogen-Doped Oxygenated Molybdenum Phosphide as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution in Alkaline Media.

Project description:Phosphides of transition metals (TMPs) are a developing class of materials for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) as an alternative to expensive noble metals to produce clean energy. Herein, the nitrogen-doped molybdenum oxide (MoOx) is developed via a facile and simple hydrothermal method, followed by annealing in the N2 atmosphere and phosphorization to form a nitrogen-doped oxygenated molybdenum phosphide (N-MoP) sphere-shaped structure. The developed N-doped phosphide structure depicts enhanced HER activity by reaching a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a very low overpotential of only 87 mV, which is much better than annealed nitrogen-doped molybdenum oxide (A-MoOx) 138 mV in alkaline medium. N-MoP is a highly efficient electrocatalyst for HER attributed to a more exposed surface, large electrode/electrolyte interface and appropriate binding energies for reactants. This study extends the opportunity of developing nitrogen-doped TMPs, which can display exceptional properties as compared to their oxides.

Fabrication of Alkaline Electrolyzer Using Ni@MWCNT as an Effective Electrocatalyst and Composite Anion Exchange Membrane.

Project description:Here, we report the synthesis of nickel nanoparticles thermally encapsulated in multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and its utility in alkaline water splitting by combining with composite thermoset anion-exchange membrane. Ni@MWCNT displayed both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). It provided 10 mA cm-2 current density at an overpotential of 300 mV for OER and 254 mV for HER on a glassy carbon electrode, respectively. Base-catalyzed N-methly-4-piperidone-formaldehyde-based prepolymer was grafted on to poly(vinyl alcohol) and cross-linked via thermal annealing followed by quaternization using methyl iodide to obtain thermoset anion exchange membrane (NMPi). Composite NMPi membranes were synthesized using additives tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and zirconium oxychloride. The water splitting performance on the fabricated membrane electrode assembly was tested and compared with commercially available Neosepta membrane. The obtained faradic efficacy of the water splitting was 94.33% for ZrO2-NMPi membrane followed by 80.23%, 77.70%, and 65.10% for SiO2-NMPi, NMPi, and Neosepta membranes, respectively. The best membrane ZrO2-NMPi achieved maximum current density of ∼0.776 A cm-2 in 5 M KOH electrolyte at 80 °C and 2 V applied constant voltage. The excellent alkaline stability of MEA indicates its potential utility in hydrogen generation applications.
