Project description:The present article deals with an one-to-one structure-property correspondence of a dinuclear iron complex, [Dipic(H2O)FeOH]2·H2O (1) (Dipic = pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid). Variable-temperature X-ray single-crystal structural analysis confirms a phase transition of complex 1 to complex 2 ([Dipic(H2O)FeOH]2) at 120 °C. Further, single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation was monitored by temperature-dependent single crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, time-dependent Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. SCSC transformation brings the change in space group of single crystal. Complex 1 crystallizes in the C2/c space group, whereas complex 2 crystallizes in the Pi̅ space group. SCSC transformation brings the change in packing diagram as well. Complex 1 shows two-dimensional network through H-bonding, whereas the packing diagram of complex 2 shows a zigzag-like arrangement. Phase transformation not only fetches structural changes but also in the magnetic properties. Difference in Fe-O-Fe bond angles of two complexes creates notable variation in their antiferromagnetic interactions with adjacent metal centers.

Project description:Heterobimetallic cores are important units within the active sites of metalloproteins but are often difficult to duplicate in synthetic systems. We have developed a synthetic approach for the preparation of a complex with a Mn(II)-(?-OH)-Fe(III) core, in which the metal centers have different coordination environments. Structural and physical data support the assignment of this complex as a heterobimetallic system. A comparison with analogous homobimetallic complexes, Mn(II)-(?-OH)-Mn(III) and Fe(II)-(?-OH)-Fe(III) cores, further supports this assignment.

Project description:Single-atom metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) catalysts have sparked intensive interests, however, the development of an atomically dispersed metal-phosphorus-carbon (M-P-C) catalyst has not been achieved, although molecular metal-phosphine complexes have found tremendous applications in homogeneous catalysis. Herein, we successfully construct graphitic phosphorus species coordinated single-atom Fe on P-doped carbon, which display outstanding catalytic performance and reaction generality in the heterogeneous hydrogenation of N-heterocycles, functionalized nitroarenes, and reductive amination reactions, while the corresponding atomically dispersed Fe atoms embedded on N-doped carbon are almost inactive under the same reaction conditions. Furthermore, we find that the catalytic activity of graphitic phosphorus coordinated single-atom Fe sharply decreased when Fe atoms were transformed to Fe clusters/nanoparticles by post-impregnation Fe species. This work can be of fundamental interest for the design of single-atom catalysts by utilizing P atoms as coordination sites as well as of practical use for the application of M-P-C catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis.

Project description:The controlled manipulation of the spin and charge of electrons in a semiconductor has the potential to create new routes to digital electronics beyond Moore's law, spintronics, and quantum detection and imaging for sensing applications. These technologies require a shift from traditional semiconducting and magnetic nanostructured materials. Here, a new material system is reported, which comprises the InSe semiconductor van der Waals crystal that embeds ferromagnetic Fe-islands. In contrast to many traditional semiconductors, the electronic properties of InSe are largely preserved after the incorporation of Fe. Also, this system exhibits ferromagnetic resonances and a large uniaxial magnetic anisotropy at room temperature, offering opportunities for the development of functional devices that integrate magnetic and semiconducting properties within the same material system.

Project description:UV-Vis absorption spectra of tannic acid were gained at pH 1.0?9.0. Due to the pH value dependence of complex, the stoichiometry of tannic acid with iron ions was tested in buffer solution by the mole ratio method. The result suggests that the complex ratio of tannic acid to Fe(III) is 1?:?1 and to Fe(II) 3?:?1 in the carbonate buffer solution, and the complex ratio of iron-tannic complexes is 1?:?1 at pH 2.2. Due to the different color changes of tannic acid with iron ions in the coordination reactions, a tannic acid test paper was designed. The concentrations of Fe(III) more than 5.000?×?10-6?mol/L and the concentrations of Fe(II) more than 1.000?×?10-5?mol/L in aqueous solution can be detected by this test paper.

Project description:Numerous single crystals that exhibit single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformations have been reported, and some of them show great promise for application to advanced adsorption materials, magnetic switches, and smart actuators. However, the development of single crystals with super-adaptive crystal lattices capable of huge and reversible structural change remains a great challenge. In this study, we report a ZnII complex that undergoes giant SCSC transformation induced by a two-step thermal elimination of ethylene glycol chelating ligands. Although the structural change is exceptionally large (50% volume shrinkage and 36% weight loss), the single-crystal nature of the complex persists because of the multiple strong hydrogen bonds between the constituent molecules. This allows the reversible zero-dimensional to one-dimension and further to three-dimensional structural changes to be fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The elimination of chelating ligands induces a chiral interconversion in the molecules that manifests as a centric-chiral-polar symmetric variation of the single crystal. The study not only presents a unique material, featuring both a periodic crystal lattice and gel-like super-ductility, but also reveals a possible solid-state reaction method for preparing chiral compounds via the elimination of chelating ligands.

Project description:Good mechanical properties and large adiabatic temperature change render Heusler-type Ni2FeGa-based magnetic shape memory alloys as a promising candidate material for solid-state mechanical cooling application at ambient conditions. Superelastic behavior and associated elastocaloric effect strongly reply on deformation conditions (e.g. applied strain rate and strain level) of stress-induced martensitic transformations. With the aim of developing high-performance elastic cooling materials, in this work, we have carried out a systematic study on a Ni54Fe19Ga27 [420]-oriented single crystal by exploring the interaction between dynamic deformation parameters and thermal response. A giant and reversible adiabatic temperature change of ±7.5?K triggered by a low stress of 30?MPa was achieved. Such a high specific cooling performance thus offers the great advantage for the small scale solid-state mechanical cooling applications. Besides, a significant temporary residual strain effect has been observed at high strain rate, which is unfavorable for reversible elastocaloric effect but can be overcome by reducing stress hysteresis, and/or by elevating initial environmental temperature. The established criterion for the desirable reversible elastocaloric properties goes beyond the present system, and can be applicable for other shape memory alloys used for elastic cooling techniques.

Project description:Fe-organic matter (Fe-OM) complexes are abundant in the environment and, due to their mobility, reactivity, and bioavailability, play a significant role in the biogeochemical Fe cycle. In photic zones of aquatic environments, Fe-OM complexes can potentially be reduced and oxidized, and thus cycled, by light-dependent processes, including abiotic photoreduction of Fe(III)-OM complexes and microbial oxidation of Fe(II)-OM complexes, by anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria. This could lead to a cryptic iron cycle in which continuous oxidation and rereduction of Fe could result in a low and steady-state Fe(II) concentration despite rapid Fe turnover. However, the coupling of these processes has never been demonstrated experimentally. In this study, we grew a model anoxygenic phototrophic Fe(II) oxidizer, Rhodobacter ferrooxidans SW2, with either citrate, Fe(II)-citrate, or Fe(III)-citrate. We found that strain SW2 was capable of reoxidizing Fe(II)-citrate produced by photochemical reduction of Fe(III)-citrate, which kept the dissolved Fe(II)-citrate concentration at low (<10??M) and stable concentrations, with a concomitant increase in cell numbers. Cell suspension incubations with strain SW2 showed that it can also oxidize Fe(II)-EDTA, Fe(II)-humic acid, and Fe(II)-fulvic acid complexes. This work demonstrates the potential for active cryptic Fe cycling in the photic zone of anoxic aquatic environments, despite low measurable Fe(II) concentrations which are controlled by the rate of microbial Fe(II) oxidation and the identity of the Fe-OM complexes.IMPORTANCE Iron cycling, including reduction of Fe(III) and oxidation of Fe(II), involves the formation, transformation, and dissolution of minerals and dissolved iron-organic matter compounds. It has been shown previously that Fe can be cycled so rapidly that no measurable changes in Fe(II) and Fe(III) concentrations occur, leading to a so-called cryptic cycle. Cryptic Fe cycles have been shown to be driven either abiotically by a combination of photochemical reduction of Fe(III)-OM complexes and reoxidation of Fe(II) by O2, or microbially by a combination of Fe(III)-reducing and Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria. Our study demonstrates a new type of light-driven cryptic Fe cycle that is relevant for the photic zone of aquatic habitats involving abiotic photochemical reduction of Fe(III)-OM complexes and microbial phototrophic Fe(II) oxidation. This new type of cryptic Fe cycle has important implications for biogeochemical cycling of iron, carbon, nutrients, and heavy metals and can also influence the composition and activity of microbial communities.

Project description:Single crystals of the title compound, potassium hexa-phosphito-penta-ferrate(II,III) hemihydrate, K0.75[Fe(II) 3.75Fe(III) 1.25(HPO3)6]·0.5H2O, were grown under mild hydro-thermal conditions. The crystal structure is isotypic with Li1.43[Fe(II) 4.43Fe(III) 0.57(HPO3)6]·1.5H2O and (NH4)2[Fe(II) 5(HPO3)6] and exhibits a [Fe(II) 3.75Fe(III) 1.25(HPO3)6](0.75-) open framework with disordered K(+) (occupancy 3/4) as counter-cations. The anionic framework is based on (001) sheets of two [FeO6] octa-hedra (one with point group symmetry 3.. and one with point group symmetry .2.) linked along [001] through [HPO3](2-) oxoanions. Each sheet is constructed from 12-membered rings of edge-sharing [FeO6] octa-hedra, giving rise to channels with a radius of ca 3.1?Å where the K(+) cations and likewise disordered water mol-ecules (occupancy 1/4) are located. O?O contacts between the water mol-ecule and framework O atoms of 2.864?(5)?Å indicate hydrogen-bonding inter-actions of medium strength. The infrared spectrum of the compound shows vibrational bands typical for phosphite and water groups. The Mössbauer spectrum is in accordance with the presence of Fe(II) and Fe(III) ions.

Project description:Knowledge of the structural properties of mantle phases is critical for understanding the enigmatic seismic features observed in the Earth's lower mantle down to the core-mantle boundary. However, our knowledge of lower mantle phase equilibria at high pressure (P) and temperature (T) conditions has been based on limited information provided by powder X-ray diffraction technique and theoretical calculations. Here, we report the in situ single-crystal structure determination of (Mg,Fe)SiO3 postperovskite (ppv) at high P and after temperature quenching in a diamond anvil cell. Using a newly developed multigrain single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis technique in a diamond anvil cell, crystallographic orientations of over 100 crystallites were simultaneously determined at high P in a coarse-grained polycrystalline sample containing submicron ppv grains. Conventional single-crystal structural analysis and refinement methods were applied for a few selected ppv crystallites, which demonstrate the feasibility of the in situ study of crystal structures of submicron crystallites in a multiphase polycrystalline sample contained within a high P device. The similarity of structural models for single-crystal Fe-bearing ppv (~10 mol% Fe) and Fe-free ppv from previous theoretical calculations suggests that the Fe content in the mantle has a negligible effect on the crystal structure of the ppv phase.
