Polymer gel with a flexible and highly ordered three-dimensional network synthesized via bond percolation.

ABSTRACT: Gels are a soft elastic material consisting of a three-dimensional polymer network with nanometer-sized pores and are used in a variety of applications. However, gel networks typically have a substantial level of defects because the network formation reaction proceeds stochastically. In this study, we present a general scheme to fabricate gels with extremely low levels of defects by applying geometric constraints into pregel solution based on the "bond percolation" concept. In the formed gel, stationary laser speckles, which are an indicator of spatial defects, were not observed at all. In addition, we found that the concentration fluctuations of the polymer chains were ergodic across the whole gel network. In such a homogeneous gel, both the spatial and temporal correlations of polymer chains are the same before and after gelation.

Explosive percolation yields highly-conductive polymer nanocomposites.

Project description:Explosive percolation is an experimentally-elusive phenomenon where network connectivity coincides with onset of an additional modification of the system; materials with correlated localisation of percolating particles and emergent conductive paths can realise sharp transitions and high conductivities characteristic of the explosively-grown network. Nanocomposites present a structurally- and chemically-varied playground to realise explosive percolation in practically-applicable systems but this is yet to be exploited by design. Herein, we demonstrate composites of graphene oxide and synthetic polymer latex which form segregated networks, leading to low percolation threshold and localisation of conductive pathways. In situ reduction of the graphene oxide at temperatures of <150 °C drives chemical modification of the polymer matrix to produce species with phenolic groups, which are known crosslinking agents. This leads to conductivities exceeding those of dense-packed networks of reduced graphene oxide, illustrating the potential of explosive percolation by design to realise low-loading composites with dramatically-enhanced electrical transport properties.

Revisit to three-dimensional percolation theory: Accurate analysis for highly stretchable conductive composite materials.

Project description:A percolation theory based on variation of conductive filler fraction has been widely used to explain the behavior of conductive composite materials under both small and large deformation conditions. However, it typically fails in properly analyzing the materials under the large deformation since the assumption may not be valid in such a case. Therefore, we proposed a new three-dimensional percolation theory by considering three key factors: nonlinear elasticity, precisely measured strain-dependent Poisson's ratio, and strain-dependent percolation threshold. Digital image correlation (DIC) method was used to determine actual Poisson's ratios at various strain levels, which were used to accurately estimate variation of conductive filler volume fraction under deformation. We also adopted strain-dependent percolation threshold caused by the filler re-location with deformation. When three key factors were considered, electrical performance change was accurately analyzed for composite materials with both isotropic and anisotropic mechanical properties.

A flexible and highly sensitive pressure sensor based on three-dimensional electrospun carbon nanofibers.

Project description:High-performance flexible pressure sensors with high sensitivity are important components of the systems for healthcare monitoring, human-machine interaction, and electronic skin. Herein, a flexible and highly sensitive pressure sensor composed of ferrosoferric oxide (Fe3O4)/carbon nanofibers (FeOCN) was fabricated using three-dimensional electrospinning and further heat treatment methods. The obtained pressure sensor demonstrates a wide working range (0-4.9 kPa) and a high sensitivity of 0.545 kPa-1 as well as an ultralow detection limit of 6 Pa. Additionally, the pressure sensor exhibits a rapid response time, good stability, high hydrophobicity, and excellent flexibility. These merits endow the pressure sensor with the ability to precisely detect wrist pulse, phonation, breathing, and finger bending in real-time. Therefore, the FeOCN pressure sensor presents a promising application in real-time healthcare monitoring.

Flexible, highly efficient all-polymer solar cells.

Project description:All-polymer solar cells have shown great potential as flexible and portable power generators. These devices should offer good mechanical endurance with high power-conversion efficiency for viability in commercial applications. In this work, we develop highly efficient and mechanically robust all-polymer solar cells that are based on the PBDTTTPD polymer donor and the P(NDI2HD-T) polymer acceptor. These systems exhibit high power-conversion efficiency of 6.64%. Also, the proposed all-polymer solar cells have even better performance than the control polymer-fullerene devices with phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as the electron acceptor (6.12%). More importantly, our all-polymer solar cells exhibit dramatically enhanced strength and flexibility compared with polymer/PCBM devices, with 60- and 470-fold improvements in elongation at break and toughness, respectively. The superior mechanical properties of all-polymer solar cells afford greater tolerance to severe deformations than conventional polymer-fullerene solar cells, making them much better candidates for applications in flexible and portable devices.

Three-dimensional structure analysis and percolation properties of a barrier marine coating.

Project description:Artificially structured coatings are widely employed to minimize materials deterioration and corrosion, the annual direct cost of which is over 3% of the gross domestic product (GDP) for industrial countries. Manufacturing higher performance anticorrosive coatings is one of the most efficient approaches to reduce this loss. However, three-dimensional (3D) structure of coatings, which determines their performance, has not been investigated in detail. Here we present a quantitative nano-scale analysis of the 3D spatial structure of an anticorrosive aluminium epoxy barrier marine coating obtained by serial block-face scanning electron microscopy (SBFSEM) and ptychographic X-ray computed tomography (PXCT). We then use finite element simulations to demonstrate how percolation through this actual 3D structure impedes ion diffusion in the composite materials. We found the aluminium flakes align within 15° of the coating surface in the material, causing the perpendicular diffusion resistance of the coating to be substantially higher than the pure epoxy.

Ordered three-dimensional interconnected nanoarchitectures in anodic porous alumina.

Project description:Three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures combine properties of nanoscale materials with the advantages of being macro-sized pieces when the time comes to manipulate, measure their properties or make a device. However, the amount of compounds with the ability to self-organize in ordered 3D nanostructures is limited. Therefore, template-based fabrication strategies become the key approach towards 3D nanostructures. Here we report the simple fabrication of a template based on anodic aluminium oxide, having a well-defined, ordered, tunable, homogeneous 3D nanotubular network in the sub 100-nm range. The 3D templates are then employed to achieve 3D, ordered nanowire networks in Bi2Te3 and polystyrene. Finally, we demonstrate the photonic crystal behaviour of both the template and the polystyrene 3D nanostructure. Our approach may establish the foundations for future high-throughput, cheap, photonic materials and devices made of simple commodity plastics, metals and semiconductors.

Resilient three-dimensional ordered architectures assembled from nanoparticles by DNA.

Project description:Rapid developments of DNA-based assembly methods provide versatile capabilities in organizing nanoparticles (NPs) in three-dimensional (3D) organized nanomaterials, which is important for optics, catalysis, mechanics, and beyond. However, the use of these nanomaterials is often limited by the narrow range of conditions in which DNA lattices are stable. We demonstrate here an approach to creating an inorganic, silica-based replica of 3D periodic DNA-NP structures with different lattice symmetries. The created ordered nanomaterials, through the precise 3D mineralization, maintain the spatial topology of connections between NPs by DNA struts and exhibit a controllable degree of the porosity. The formed silicated DNA-NP lattices exhibit excellent resiliency. They are stable when exposed to extreme temperatures (>1000°C), pressures (8 GPa), and harsh radiation conditions and can be processed by the conventional nanolithography methods. The presented approach allows the use of a DNA assembly strategy to create organized nanomaterials for a broad range of operational conditions.

Bond percolation in coloured and multiplex networks.

Project description:Percolation in complex networks is a process that mimics network degradation and a tool that reveals peculiarities of the network structure. During the course of percolation, the emergent properties of networks undergo non-trivial transformations, which include a phase transition in the connectivity, and in some special cases, multiple phase transitions. Such global transformations are caused by only subtle changes in the degree distribution, which locally describe the network. Here we establish a generic analytic theory that describes how structure and sizes of all connected components in the network are affected by simple and colour-dependent bond percolations. This theory predicts locations of the phase transitions, existence of wide critical regimes that do not vanish in the thermodynamic limit, and a phenomenon of colour switching in small components. These results may be used to design percolation-like processes, optimise network response to percolation, and detect subtle signals preceding network collapse.

A Highly Sensitive and Flexible Capacitive Pressure Sensor Based on a Porous Three-Dimensional PDMS/Microsphere Composite.

Project description:In recent times, polymer-based flexible pressure sensors have been attracting a lot of attention because of their various applications. A highly sensitive and flexible sensor is suggested, capable of being attached to the human body, based on a three-dimensional dielectric elastomeric structure of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and microsphere composite. This sensor has maximal porosity due to macropores created by sacrificial layer grains and micropores generated by microspheres pre-mixed with PDMS, allowing it to operate at a wider pressure range (~150 kPa) while maintaining a sensitivity (of 0.124 kPa-1 in a range of 0~ 15 kPa) better than in previous studies. The maximized pores can cause deformation in the structure, allowing for the detection of small changes in pressure. In addition to exhibiting a fast rise time (~167 ms) and fall time (~117 ms), as well as excellent reproducibility, the fabricated pressure sensor exhibits reliability in its response to repeated mechanical stimuli (2.5 kPa, 1,000 cycles). As an application, we develop a wearable device for monitoring repeated tiny motions, such as the pulse on the human neck and swallowing at the Adam's apple. This sensory device is also used to detect movements in the index finger and to monitor an insole system in real-time.

Flexible Highly Sensitive Pressure Sensor Based on Ionic Liquid Gel Film.

Project description:Flexible, semitransparent ionic liquid gel (ionogels) film was first fabricated by in situ polymerization. The optimized ionogels exhibited excellent mechanical properties, high conductivity, and force sensing characteristics. The multifunctional sensor based on the ionogel film was constructed and provided the high sensitivity of 15.4 kPa-1 and wide detection range sensing from 5 Pa to 5 kPa. Moreover, the aforementioned sensor demonstrated excellent mechanical stability against repeated external deformations (for 3000 cycles under 90° bending). Importantly, the sensor showed advantages in detection of environmental changes to the external stimulus of subtle signals, including a rubber blower blowing the sensor, gently touching, torsion, and bending.
