Digital posters for interactive cellular media and bioengineering education.

ABSTRACT: Conventional posters are effective in disseminating progress reports in scientific meetings, but they fail to deliver the need for visualization of dynamic biological data and become costly with the increasing number of conferences and the reprinting needs for emerging research. Here we present digital posters that repurpose digital frames from the art community and experiment with multiplexed imaging movies of cells as a demonstration of the digital poster concept, providing an interactive and low-cost tool for next-generation sharing platforms.

Project description:This research analysed the integration of innovation and entrepreneurship education for students, majoring in digital media art design. Using a grounded theory approach, we investigated the experiences of two research groups: five leaders of digital media art design courses in colleges and universities, and five successful entrepreneurs who had majored in digital media art design and had achieved significantly in the industry after graduation. From the two dimensions of ‘innovation’ and ‘entrepreneurship’, as well as the two perspectives of ‘implementer’ and ‘party’, semi-structured interviews were conducted on the core competencies that innovation and entrepreneurship talents should have the methods and experience of innovation and entrepreneurship education, the difficulties and problems in the implementation of innovation and entrepreneurship education, the need for talent among enterprises and the factors affecting entrepreneurship success. By analysing and clustering the data, we were able to comprehensively identify the main problems and aspects that require more attention in terms of cultivating innovative and entrepreneurial talents in the digital media art design major. Based on the grounded theory research method, this paper established a theoretical model, outlining the innovation of the digital media art design major and the entrepreneurship education reform path. The key internal elements of the model include mechanisms for professional talent training, curriculum integration, teacher team construction and resource support. The school-enterprise cooperation mechanism is recognised as the key external element for innovation and entrepreneurship education reform. The results provide direction for future education and teaching reform, as well as professional input for the digital media art design major. The findings encourage those involved in the digital media art design major to cultivate more high-level, pioneering professionals, so as to adapt to the transformation and upgrading of economic and social development in the context of a growing digital economy.

Project description:Stress diseases such as affective disorders are often characterized by a disturbed regulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis. This dysregulation can be explained by an impaired function of the receptors involved in the HPA-axis regulation, for example, the glucocorticoid receptors (GR). The regulation process of the HPA axis and the GR function are influenced by several genes, for instance by NR3C1 coding for the GR and also by FKBP5, a co-chaperone in the GR-complex. Binder et al. showed that common polymorphisms in FKBP5 are associated with increased FKBP5 protein expression as well as correlation between cortisol levels and peripheral blood FKBP5 mRNA expression. Regarding the effects of FKPB5 genotypes on psychosocial stress reaction, Ising and colleagues tested healthy subjects with the Trier Social Stress Test, a standardized paradigm to induce psychosocial stress. Subjects homozygous for any of the FKBP5 variants showed an incomplete normalization of the stress induced cortisol secretion. Recent studies demonstrated that FKBP5 and NR3C1 are involved in the endocrine stress reaction. Therefore, we expected changes of FKBP5 and NR3C1 mRNA expression in peripheral blood after exposure to a psychosocial stress situation. To address this, we performed a pilot study where we tested six healthy young men without history of psychiatric or severe somatic disorders and applied the trier social stress test (TSST). Before and after two consecutive TSSTs, we took blood samples with a venous catheter in order to measure ACTH and cortisol in plasma and mRNA expression of the candidate genes in peripheral blood. Blood cells were stabilized using PAXgene tubes, and gene expression was processed by qPCR. Briefly after the psychosocial stress the stress hormones ACTH and cortisol increased whereas the reaction to the second TSST was lower suggesting a habituation effect. These endocrine stress responses were followed by an alteration in FKBP5 gene expression, further underlining the importance of this gene for the neuroendocrine stress reaction. NR3C1 mRNA levels did not change after the TSST. Our preliminary data indicate an effect of psychosocial stress on the FKBP5 mRNA levels. Further research with larger samples sizes is required to replicate and extend these results.

Project description:PurposeThe study assessed the effectiveness of a site-specific video educational material in improving patient understanding and confidence regarding radiation therapy trajectory.Methods and materialsA quasi experimental longitudinal pretest posttest study was conducted at a referral radiation therapy center from May 2020 to September 2020. It included 52 adult patients admitted for a first course radical radiation therapy. One generic and 6 site-specific (breast, pelvis, head and neck, brain, chest and abdomen, and bladder) animated cartoon videos were developed in house to provide concise overview of the overall patient's trajectory in radiation therapy, with full visual description of the procedures and specific preparation measures. A 14-item questionnaire was designed to assess pre- and postintervention levels of understanding and confidence of patients, with calculation of and an understanding and confidence score (UCS), range 0-14.ResultsThe mean (standard deviation) UCS in pre- and postintervention was 9.36 (2.48) and 11.92 (1.34) out of 14, respectively, indicating a mean increase of 2.57 subsequent to the intervention (P < .001). The effect size was large with a Cohen's d = 1.01. Of the 14 dimensions explored, 8 were observed to have remarkable improvement, notably understanding the purpose of the tattoo mark, reason of daily or weekly imaging, and what to expect with radiation therapy. Participants with poor reading ability had greater increase in UCS (ΔUCS = 4.25 vs ≤2.33) and in 5 out of 8 dimensions with remarkable improvement.ConclusionsThe use of digital educational material in radiation oncology meets the urgent need for providing patients with concise and site-specific information, while sparing extra hospital visits to meet education coordinators during the COVID-19 crisis. Additional studies are warranted to assess both the clinical and long-term effectiveness of the educational material, using a longitudinal controlled design.
