Red yeast rice (RYR), a Chinese traditional folk medicine produced by the fermentation of cooked rice kernels with a Monascaceae mold, <i>Monascus purpureus</i>, has long been used to treat blood circulation stasis, indigestion, diarrhea, and limb weakness in East Asian countries.
