ABSTRACT: A new species of Nilobezzia Kieffer, Nilobezzia bamenwana Li & Li, sp. nov., collected from Bamenwan mangrove forest of Hainan Island, China, is described and illustrated based on female adults. The genus was previously known to have a single species occurring on the island.

Project description:Three new species of the predaceous midges of genus Alluaudomyia Kieffer, 1913: A.flavinotum Wu & Li, sp. nov. of the maculipennis group, and A.reflexuralis Wu & Li, sp. nov. and A.limu Wu & Li, sp. nov. of the parva group, are described from the National Park of Hainan Tropical Rainforest, Hainan Island, China. Illustrations and COI barcodes (a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1) of the three new species are also provided. Associations of male and female specimens of two species (A.reflexuralis Wu & Li, sp. nov. and A.limu Wu & Li, sp. nov.) are supported by DNA barcodes. The parva group is reported from China for the first time.

Two new species of Stenochironomus Kieffer (Diptera, Chironomidae) from Zhejiang, China.

Project description:Two new species of Stenochironomus Kieffer (Diptera: Chironomidae: Chironominae), Stenochironomusbrevissimus sp. n. and Stenochironomuslinanensis sp. n., are described from China and the male imagines are illustrated. Stenochironomusbrevissimus sp. n. can be separated from the so far known species by having very short and small, spatulate superior volsella with two long setae, whereas Stenochironomuslinanensis sp. n. is easily separated from the other species of Stenochironomus by the following characters: wings transparent, body yellow, superior volsella finger-like, with nine long setae, elongated inferior volsella with four long setae and one well developed terminal spine; tergite IX with 10-15 long setae medially. A key to the males of Stenochironomus occurring in China is given.

Protura from Hainan Island, China: new species, checklist and distribution.

Project description:More than 1500 proturan specimens from Hainan Island are systematically studied. An annotated list of all species of Protura from Hainan Island is provided and their geographical distribution is discussed. The genus Paracondeellum is reported from Hainan Island for the first time, and Paracondeellum paradisum sp. nov. is described. The type species Paracondeellum dukouense (Tang & Yin, 1988) is redescribed based on syntype, and the lectotype and paralectotype are designated. The characters of the genus Paracondeellum are redefined, and the two known species are compared in detail. The Protura fauna of Hainan Island is mainly composed of species from the Oriental region, with 91% of the species belonging to the families Berberentulidae and Eosentomidae.

A new species of Patania from the Hainan Island, China (Lepidoptera, Crambidae).

Project description:Patania clava sp. n. is described from the Diaoluo Mountain of Hainan Island, China. The new species is distinguished from its most similar congener, Patania iopasalis (Walker, 1859), by the following features: wingspan 33.0-35.0 mm (vs. 21.0-30.0 mm), ventral cilia of the male antenna as long as the diameter of flagellomere (vs. 1/4), the thick finger-like gnathos (vs. the short broad sheet-like), a long thick needle-like cornutus stretching out from (vs. embedded in) a cluster of spicular cornuti near apex. Images of adult and genitalia of the new species are provided.

Rhamnella brachycarpa (Rhamnaceae), a new species from Hainan Island, China.

Project description:Rhamnella brachycarpa Z. Qiang Lu & Y. Shuai Sun, a new evergreen woody species from Hainan Island, is described and illustrated. The specimens of this new species have previously been identified and placed under R. rubrinervis (H. Lév.) Rehder, with which it shares evergreen leaves, erect and climbing habits and axillary flowering branches with bracteole leaves. However, the specimens from three distinct Hainan populations significantly differ from those of R. rubrinervis from other regions with smaller length to width ratios of leaves, fruit and seeds, smaller sizes of fruit and seeds and mucronate seed apices. Principal Component Analysis of the closely related taxa, based on multiple morphological characters, further recognised two separated groups. One of them comprises R. tonkinensis and R. rubrinervis, the other merely includes all individuals from these distinct Hainan populations. Therefore, R. brachycarpa, based on these distinct Hainan populations, is here erected as a new species, distinctly different from its published relatives.

Gastrodiabawanglingensis (Orchidaceae, Epidendroideae), a new species from Hainan Island, China.

Project description:Gastrodiabawanglingensis, a new species of Orchidaceae from Hainan Island, China, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to G.theana, G.albidoides and G.albida with dwarf habits, scarcely opening flowers, elongated fruit stems, curved and fleshy perianth tubes and similar columns and lips, but can be easily distinguished from them by having a pair of lateral wings bent outwards at the apex of the column and lateral wings with acuminate tips lower than the anther. According to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, the new species is assessed as Endangered (EN). The plastome of G.bawanglingensis is greatly reduced and reconfigured with approximately 30876 bp in size and 25.36% in GC content. Morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic results based on chloroplast gene sequences support the recognition of G.bawanglingensis as a new species within Gastrodia.

Project description:Three new species of Nilothauma Kieffer are described and figured from Oriental China: Nilothauma angustum sp. n. based on the male only, Nilothauma aristatum sp. n. based on the male, pupa and larva, and Nilothauma bilobatum sp. n. based on the male and pupa. In addition, new distribution records are given for Nilothauma japonicum Niitsuma, Nilothauma nojirimaculatum Sasa, Nilothauma hibaratertium Sasa, and Nilothauma acre Adam & Sæther. A key to known males of Nilothauma Kieffer in China is provided.

Four New Species of Strobilomyces (Boletaceae, Boletales) from Hainan Island, Tropical China.

Project description:Strobilomyces, one of the most noticeable genera of Boletaceae (Boletales), is both ecologically and economically important. Although many studies have focused on Strobilomyces in China, the diversity still remains incompletely understood. In the present study, several collections of Strobilomyces from Hainan Island, tropical China were studied based on morphology and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Four species are described as new, viz. S. baozhengii, S. conicus, S. hainanensis, and S. pachycystidiatus. Detailed descriptions, color photos of fresh basidiomata, and line drawings of microstructures of the four species are presented.

Taxonomy of the genus Peyerimhoffia Kieffer from Mainland China, with a description of seven new species (Diptera, Sciaridae).

Project description:The taxonomy of the genus Peyerimhoffia Kieffer in China was studied. Eight species were recognized, including seven new species that are herein described and illustrated: P. hamata sp. n., P. obesa sp. n., P. sparsula sp. n., P. longiprojecta sp. n., P. brachypodua sp. n., P. yunnana sp. n., and P. shennongjiana sp. n. In addition, P. vagabunda (Winnertz, 1867) is reported for the first time from China. A key to these Chinese species is provided.
