Charge Transfer during the Aluminum-Water Reaction Studied with Schottky Nanodiode Sensors.

ABSTRACT: The aluminum-water reaction is a promising source for hydrogen production. However, experimental studies of this reaction are difficult because of the highly concentrated alkaline solution used to activate the surface of aluminum. Here, we show that the reaction kinetics can be monitored in real time by a Schottky diode sensor, consisting of an ultrathin aluminum film deposited on a semiconductor substrate. Charge resulting from the corrosion of the aluminum film causes an electrical signal in the sensor, which is proportional to the rate of the chemical process. We discuss the possible mechanisms for the reaction-induced charge generation and transfer, as well as the use of Schottky diode based sensors for operando studies of the aluminum-water reaction and similar reactions on metals in concentrated alkaline solutions.

A gating charge transfer center in voltage sensors.

Project description:Voltage sensors regulate the conformations of voltage-dependent ion channels and enzymes. Their nearly switchlike response as a function of membrane voltage comes from the movement of positively charged amino acids, arginine or lysine, across the membrane field. We used mutations with natural and unnatural amino acids, electrophysiological recordings, and x-ray crystallography to identify a charge transfer center in voltage sensors that facilitates this movement. This center consists of a rigid cyclic "cap" and two negatively charged amino acids to interact with a positive charge. Specific mutations induce a preference for lysine relative to arginine. By placing lysine at specific locations, the voltage sensor can be stabilized in different conformations, which enables a dissection of voltage sensor movements and their relation to ion channel opening.

Ionic solvation studied by image-charge reaction field method.

Project description:In a preceding paper [J. Chem. Phys. 131, 154103 (2009)], we introduced a new, hybrid explicit/implicit method to treat electrostatic interactions in computer simulations, and tested its performance for liquid water. In this paper, we report further tests of this method, termed the image-charge solvation model (ICSM), in simulations of ions solvated in water. We find that our model can faithfully reproduce known solvation properties of sodium and chloride ions. The charging free energy of a single sodium ion is in excellent agreement with the estimates by other electrostatics methods, while offering much lower finite-size errors. Similarly, the potentials of mean force computed for Na-Cl, Na-Na, and Cl-Cl pairs closely reproduce those reported previously. Collectively, our results demonstrate the superior accuracy of the proposed ICSM method for simulations of mixed media.

Accelerated charge transfer in water-layered peptide assemblies.

Project description:Bioinspired assemblies bear massive potential for energy generation and storage. Yet, biological molecules have severe limitations for charge transfer. Here, we report l-tryptophan-d-tryptophan assembling architectures comprising alternating water and peptide layers. The extensive connection of water molecules results in significant dipole-dipole interactions and piezoelectric response that can be further engineered by doping via iodine adsorption or isotope replacement with no change in the chemical composition. This simple system and the new doping strategies supply alternative solutions for enhancing charge transfer in bioinspired supramolecular architectures.

Direct in Situ Measurement of Charge Transfer Processes During Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation on Catalyzed Hematite.

Project description:Electrocatalysts improve the efficiency of light-absorbing semiconductor photoanodes driving the oxygen evolution reaction, but the precise function(s) of the electrocatalysts remains unclear. We directly measure, for the first time, the interface carrier transport properties of a prototypical visible-light-absorbing semiconductor, α-Fe2O3, in contact with one of the fastest known water oxidation catalysts, Ni0.8Fe0.2O x , by directly measuring/controlling the current and/or voltage at the Ni0.8Fe0.2O x catalyst layer using a second working electrode. The measurements demonstrate that the majority of photogenerated holes in α-Fe2O3 directly transfer to the catalyst film over a wide range of conditions and that the Ni0.8Fe0.2O x is oxidized by photoholes to an operating potential sufficient to drive water oxidation at rates that match the photocurrent generated by the α-Fe2O3. The Ni0.8Fe0.2O x therefore acts as both a hole-collecting contact and a catalyst for the photoelectrochemical water oxidation process. Separate measurements show that the illuminated junction photovoltage across the α-Fe2O3|Ni0.8Fe0.2O x interface is significantly decreased by the oxidation of Ni2+ to Ni3+ and the associated increase in the Ni0.8Fe0.2O x electrical conductivity. In sum, the results illustrate the underlying operative charge-transfer and photovoltage generation mechanisms of catalyzed photoelectrodes, thus guiding their continued improvement.

Human Respiratory Monitoring Based on Schottky Resistance Humidity Sensors.

Project description:Two types of Schottky structure sensors (silicon nanowire (SiNW)/ZnO/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and SiNW/TiO2/rGO) were designed, their humidity resistance characteristics were studied, and the sensors were applied to detect sleep apnea through breath humidity monitoring. The results show that the resistance of the sensors exhibited significant changes with increasing humidity, the response times of the two sensors within the relative humidity range of 23-97% were 49 s and 67 s, and the recovery times were 24 s and 43 s, respectively. Meanwhile, continuous breathing monitoring results indicate that the sensitivity of the sensors remained basically unchanged during 10 min of normal breathing and simulated apnea. The response of the sensor is still good after 30 days of use. We believe that the Schottky structure composite sensor is a very promising technology for human breathing monitoring.

Production of Gamma Alumina Using Plasma-Treated Aluminum and Water Reaction Byproducts.

Project description:High purity hydrogen and solid-state byproducts are produced using a proposed plasma-activated aluminum and water reactions approach. These byproducts could be transformed into pure gamma Al2O3 powder material, while hydrogen can be used for electricity generation. Various chemical methods can be used for the synthesis of gamma alumina, but most could result in high levels of remaining impurities. Boehmite is a cost-effective starting material for the production of high-purity Al2O3. Herein, we present a novel method for the synthesis of boehmite and its transformation into high-specific-surface-area ?-alumina. Specifically, this method implicates the direct reaction between distilled water and plasma-treated aluminum powder. The results show the structural and morphological changes of the byproduct of the aluminum/water reaction to boehmite and ?-Al2O3 after a simple heating procedure (at 280 and 500 °C respectively). The high-purity hydrogen produced during the aluminum/water reaction can be used for the high-efficiency and environmentally friendly production of electrical energy.

Vertical GaN-on-GaN Schottky Diodes as ?-Particle Radiation Sensors.

Project description:Among the different semiconductors, GaN provides advantages over Si, SiC and GaAs in radiation hardness, resulting in researchers exploring the development of GaN-based radiation sensors to be used in particle physics, astronomic and nuclear science applications. Several reports have demonstrated the usefulness of GaN as an ?-particle detector. Work in developing GaN-based radiation sensors are still evolving and GaN sensors have successfully detected ?-particles, neutrons, ultraviolet rays, x-rays, electrons and ?-rays. This review elaborates on the design of a good radiation detector along with the state-of-the-art ?-particle detectors using GaN. Successful improvement in the growth of GaN drift layers (DL) with 2 order of magnitude lower in charge carrier density (CCD) (7.6 × 1014/cm3) on low threading dislocation density (3.1 × 106/cm2) hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) grown free-standing GaN substrate, which helped ~3 orders of magnitude lower reverse leakage current (IR) with 3-times increase of reverse breakdown voltages. The highest reverse breakdown voltage of -2400 V was also realized from Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) on a free-standing GaN substrate with 30 ?m DL. The formation of thick depletion width (DW) with low CCD resulted in improving high-energy (5.48 MeV) ?-particle detection with the charge collection efficiency (CCE) of 62% even at lower bias voltages (-20 V). The detectors also detected 5.48 MeV ?-particle with CCE of 100% from SBDs with 30-?m DL at -750 V.

Motion sensors achieved from a conducting polymer-metal Schottky contact.

Project description:Mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion devices show potential applications in the detection of movements. Previous studies on these sensor devices are mainly based on piezoelectricity or triboelectricity, which typically generates AC signals. In this study, a movement sensor that generated DC signals based on a conducting polymer-metal Schottky diode was prepared for the first time. Using the Al|poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)|Au device as a model, we showed that the sensor device could detect the touch and sliding movements. Both the pressure of the Al electrode touching the PEDOT surface and its sliding speed affected the voltage outputs. The device showed a high response speed of 1.7 s at 39.8 kPa. The modified device can even measure the sliding speed. The DC output allows the use of electrical energy for running other electronic devices. A conducting polymer-metal Schottky contact may be useful for the development of DC output movement sensors.

Charge Transfer Dynamics at Dye-Sensitized ZnO and TiO2 Interfaces Studied by Ultrafast XUV Photoelectron Spectroscopy.

Project description:Interfacial charge transfer from photoexcited ruthenium-based N3 dye molecules into ZnO thin films received controversial interpretations. To identify the physical origin for the delayed electron transfer in ZnO compared to TiO2, we probe directly the electronic structure at both dye-semiconductor interfaces by applying ultrafast XUV photoemission spectroscopy. In the range of pump-probe time delays between 0.5 to 1.0 ps, the transient signal of the intermediate states was compared, revealing a distinct difference in their electron binding energies of 0.4 eV. This finding strongly indicates the nature of the charge injection at the ZnO interface associated with the formation of an interfacial electron-cation complex. It further highlights that the energetic alignment between the dye donor and semiconductor acceptor states appears to be of minor importance for the injection kinetics and that the injection efficiency is dominated by the electronic coupling.
