Spectral data of refractive index and extinction coefficient for thin films of titanium group metals used for fabrication of optical microstructures.

ABSTRACT: In this data paper we share the information on refractive index and extinction coefficient of metallic films of the titanium group (Ti, Zr, Hf), measured by ellipsometry in the wavelength range of 300-1100 nm. The presented data can be used to indirectly measure the thickness of metal films when they are sputtered onto a substrate, using the measured data on transmission and reflection coefficients depending on the wavelength of the probe beam, as well as to calculate the energy characteristics of diffraction gratings, formed on the surface of these films, under rigorous electromagnetic theory. The data were used in the research article "Increasing the spatial resolution of direct laser writing of diffractive structures on thin films of titanium group metals" [1].

Transparent Conductive Two-Dimensional Titanium Carbide Epitaxial Thin Films.

Project description:Since the discovery of graphene, the quest for two-dimensional (2D) materials has intensified greatly. Recently, a new family of 2D transition metal carbides and carbonitrides (MXenes) was discovered that is both conducting and hydrophilic, an uncommon combination. To date MXenes have been produced as powders, flakes, and colloidal solutions. Herein, we report on the fabrication of ∼1 × 1 cm2 Ti3C2 films by selective etching of Al, from sputter-deposited epitaxial Ti3AlC2 films, in aqueous HF or NH4HF2. Films that were about 19 nm thick, etched with NH4HF2, transmit ∼90% of the light in the visible-to-infrared range and exhibit metallic conductivity down to ∼100 K. Below 100 K, the films' resistivity increases with decreasing temperature and they exhibit negative magnetoresistance-both observations consistent with a weak localization phenomenon characteristic of many 2D defective solids. This advance opens the door for the use of MXenes in electronic, photonic, and sensing applications.

Fabrication of black aluminium thin films by magnetron sputtering.

Project description:Black aluminium thin films were prepared by direct current (DC) pulsed magnetron sputtering. The N2 concentration in the Ar-N2 mixture that was used as the deposition atmosphere was varied from 0 to 10%, and its impact on the film growth and optical properties was studied. A strong change in the film growth process was observed as a function of the N2 concentration. At a specific N2 concentration of ∼6%, the Al film growth process favoured the formation of a moth-eye-like antireflective surface. This surface morphology, which was similar to the structure of a cauliflower, is known to trap incident light, resulting in films with a very low reflectivity. A diffuse reflectivity lower than 4% was reached in the ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-VIS-NIR) spectral range that corresponds to a value observed for an ultrahigh absorber. We found that for the preparation of black aluminium, the nitrogen content plays an important role in film formation and the resulting film morphology.

Vapor-Assisted Conversion of Heterobimetallic Titanium-Organic Framework Thin Films.

Project description:Heterobimetallic Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) synergically combine the properties of two metal ions, thus offering significant advantages over homometallic MOFs in gas storage, separation, and catalysis, among other applications. However, these remain centered on bulk materials, while applications that require functional coatings on solid supports are not developed. We explore for the first time the deposition of heterometallic Ti-based MOF thin films using vapor-assisted conversion on substrates functionalized with a self-assembled monolayer. Furthermore, metal-induced dynamic topological transformation allows the conversion of MUV-10(Ca) films into MUV-101(Co) and MUV-102(Cu), which is not accessible through direct synthesis, without morphologically altering the films. These nonconventional thin-film deposition techniques enable homogeneous and crystalline coatings of heterometallic titanium MOFs that also maintain their corresponding porosity.

Large refractive index changes in ZIF-8 thin films of optical quality.

Project description:ZIF-8 (zeolitic imidazolate framework-8) is a member of the growing family of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Homogeneous and crack-free ZIF-8 thin films of optical quality were crystallized on silicon and glass substrates. The refractive index of such ZIF-8 thin films in the complete visible light spectrum was directly determined for the first time. By incubating the porous films in different substances, the refractive index could be modulated over a wide range, two times larger than previously reported for MOF thin films. Reversible refractive index switching in ZIF-8 thin films was performed via the liquid and the gas phase. The ability to adjust the refractive index over a broad range enables the use of ZIF-8 films for applications in optical devices such as sensors, coatings for mirrors and lenses, or as an optical medium in more complex optical devices.

Magnetic moment impact on spin-dependent Seebeck coefficient of ferromagnetic thin films.

Project description:Magnetic materials may be engineered to produce thermoelectric materials using spin-related effects. However, clear understanding of localized magnetic moments (µI), free carriers, and Seebeck coefficient (S) interrelations is mandatory for efficient material design. In this work, we investigate µI influence on the spin-dependent S of model ferromagnetic thin films, allowing µI thermal fluctuations, ordering, and density variation influence to be independently investigated. µI influence on free carrier polarization is found to be of highest importance on S: efficient coupling of free carrier spin and localized magnetic moment promotes the increase of S, while spin-dependent relaxation time difference between the two spin-dependent conduction channels leads to S decrease. Our observations support new routes for thermoelectric material design based on spin-related effects in ferromagnetic materials.

Chlorosubstituted Copper Phthalocyanines: Spectral Study and Structure of Thin Films.

Project description:In this work, the tetra-, octa- and hexadecachloro-substituted copper phthalocyanines CuPcClx (where x can equal 4, 8 or 16) were investigated by the methods of vibrational (IR and Raman) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The assignment of the most intense bands, both in IR and Raman spectra, was carried out on the basis of DFT calculations. The structure of a CuPcCl4 single crystal grown by sublimation in vacuum was refined for the first time. The effect of chloro-substitution on the structure of CuPcClx thin films deposited in a vacuum onto a glass substrate at 50 and 200 °C was studied. It was shown that CuPcCl4 formed polycrystalline films with the preferential orientation of the (100) crystallographic plane of crystallites parallel to the substrate surface when deposited on a substrate at 50 °C. Introduction of more Cl-substituents into the phthalocyanine macrocycle leads to the formation of amorphous films on the substrates at 50 °C. At the elevated substrate temperature, the growth of polycrystalline disordered films was observed for all three copper phthalocyanines.

Composition and properties of RF-sputter deposited titanium dioxide thin films.

Project description:The photocatalytic properties of titania (TiO2) have prompted research utilising its useful ability to convert solar energy into electron-hole pairs to drive novel chemistry. The aim of the present work is to examine the properties required for a synthetic method capable of producing thin TiO2 films, with well defined, easily modifiable characteristics. Presented here is a method of synthesis of TiO2 nanoparticulate thin films generated using RF plasma capable of homogenous depositions with known elemental composition and modifiable properties at a far lower cost than single-crystal TiO2. Multiple depositions regimes were examined for their effect on overall chemical composition and to minimise the unwanted contaminant, carbon, from the final film. The resulting TiO2 films can be easily modified through heating to further induce defects and change the electronic structure, crystallinity, surface morphology and roughness of the deposited thin film.

Hydrogen Gas Sensing Properties of Mixed Copper-Titanium Oxide Thin Films.

Project description:Hydrogen is an efficient source of clean and environmentally friendly energy. However, because it is explosive at concentrations higher than 4%, safety issues are a great concern. As its applications are extended, the need for the production of reliable monitoring systems is urgent. In this work, mixed copper-titanium oxide ((CuTi)Ox) thin films with various copper concentrations (0-100 at.%), deposited by magnetron sputtering and annealed at 473 K, were investigated as a prospective hydrogen gas sensing material. Scanning electron microscopy was applied to determine the morphology of the thin films. Their structure and chemical composition were investigated by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The prepared films were nanocrystalline mixtures of metallic copper, cuprous oxide, and titanium anatase in the bulk, whereas at the surface only cupric oxide was found. In comparison to the literature, the (CuTi)Ox thin films already showed a sensor response to hydrogen at a relatively low operating temperature of 473 K without using any extra catalyst. The best sensor response and sensitivity to hydrogen gas were found in the mixed copper-titanium oxides containing similar atomic concentrations of both metals, i.e., 41/59 and 56/44 of Cu/Ti. Most probably, this effect is related to their similar morphology and to the simultaneous presence of Cu and Cu2O crystals in these mixed oxide films. In particular, the studies of surface oxidation state revealed that it was the same for all annealed films and consisted only of CuO. However, in view of their crystalline structure, they consisted of Cu and Cu2O nanocrystals in the thin film volume.

Comparison of Fabrication Methods of Metal-Organic Framework Optical Thin Films.

Project description:Homogeneous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based optical thin films have attracted increasing attention, since they can potentially be used as active components in optical/opt-electrical devices, and how to fabricate MOF thin films with high quality is the premise of practically using them. Herein, five fabrication methods of MOF films are systematically investigated and compared from the aspects of appearance, reflectivity, micro-morphology, surface roughness, and optical properties of the films. The famous robust Zr-based MOF, UiO-66 (UiO = University of Oslo) is chosen as a model, and the five methods are spin-coating, dip-coating, self-assembly, direct growth, and the stepwise layer by layer growth method. This study provides fundamental support for the application of MOFs in the optical field.
