Tensile Strength and Dispersibility of Pulp/Danufil Wet-Laid Hydroentangled Nonwovens.

ABSTRACT: Wet-laid hydroentangled nonwovens are widely used for disposable products, but these products generally do not have good dispersibility and can block sewage systems after being discarded into toilets. In this study, both pulp fibers and Danufil fibers are selected as we hypothesize that the high wet strength and striated surface of Danufil fibers would allow us to produce nonwovens with better dispersibility while having enough mechanical properties. The wet strength and dispersibility of nonwovens are systematically studied by investigating the influence of the fiber blend ratio, fiber length, and water jet pressure. The results indicate that the percent dispersion could be as high as 81.3% when the wet strength is higher than 4.8 N, which has been improved greatly comparing the percent dispersion of 67.6% reported before.

Project description:Developing wet-laid papers with a good wet strength remains a longstanding challenge in the papermaking industry. In this study, hydroentanglement, a mechanical bonding technique is developed to consolidate the wet-laid fibre web. The results indicate that wet tensile strength, ductile stretching property, softness, air permeability and water absorbency of the wet-laid fibre web are significantly improved by hydroentanglement. In addition, the abrasion test shows that the dusting off rate of wet-laid fibre web can be effectively reduced through hydroentanglement. Moreover, the disintegration experiment proves that wet-laid hydroentangled nonwovens could be easily dispersed when compared with conventional carded hydroentangled nonwovens. Therefore, the new wet-laid hydroentangled nonwovens can maintain excellent performance in a wet state, showing a great potential for personal hygiene applications.

Reduced dispersibility of flushable wet wipes after wet storage.

Project description:Scientific publications and newsfeeds recently focused on flushable wet wipes and their role in sewage system blockages. It is stated that although products are marked as flushable, they do not disintegrate after being disposed of via the toilet. In this work it is shown that wetlaid hydroentangled wet wipes lose their initially good dispersive properties during their storage in wet condition. As a consequence, we are suggesting to add tests after defined times of wet storage when assessing the flushability of wet wipes. Loss of dispersibility is found for both, wet wipes from industrial production and wipes produced on pilot facilities. We found it quite surprising that the wet wipes' dispersibility is deteriorating after storage in exactly the same liquid they are dispersed in, i.e. water. This is probably why the effect of wet storage has not been investigated earlier. It is demonstrated that the deteriorating dispersibility of these wipes is linked to the used type of short cellulosic fibres - only wipes containing unbleached softwood pulp as short fibre component were preserving good dispersibility during wet storage. Possible mechanisms that might be responsible are discussed, e.g. long term fiber swelling causing a tightening of the fiber network, or surface interdiffusion.

Improving Mechanical Strength and Water Barrier Properties of Pulp Molded Product by Wet-End Added Polyamide Epichlorohydrin/Cationic Starch.

Project description:As desirable food packaging materials, pulp molded products have attracted great attention from both academia and industry. To endow the products with high mechanical strength and water barrier properties by low-cost wet-end additives to broaden their application fields, polyamide epichlorohydrin (PAE) or/and cationic starch (CS) were added to the pulp slurry after the addition of oil- and water-proof agents. Results showed that the optimal pulp molded product was obtained at a PAE and CS content of 1.0 and 0.6%, respectively. The resulting product had a dry strength of 24.4 kN/m, a wet strength of 4.22 kN/m, and a water absorption of 51.5%. The addition of CS was beneficial to the properties of the PAE wet-end added product due to the formation of hydrogen bonding with cellulose fibers and PAE, which also led to a decreased PAE dosage for health concern as food packaging materials. Finally, the PAE/CS wet-end added pulp molded product was applied for orange fresh-keeping in the fridge. The product displayed much more shape stability and lower weight increase in comparison with that of the product without the addition of PAE and CS. This indicated the great application prospects of our designed pulp molded product as a fruit freprospectssh-keeping packaging material.

Balancing the decomposable behavior and wet tensile mechanical property of cellulose-based wet wipe substrates by the aqueous adhesive.

Project description:With the current global outbreak of novel coronaviruses, the fabrication of decomposable wet wipe with sufficient wet strength to meet daily use is promising but still challenging, especially when renewable cellulose was employed. In this work, a decomposable cellulose-based wet wipe substrate is demonstrated by introducing a synthetic N-vinyl pyrrolidone-glycidyl methacrylate (NVP-GMA) adhesive on the cellulose surface. Experimental results reveal that the NVP-GMA adhesive not only significantly facilitates the chemical bonding between cellulose fibers in the wet state, but also increase the surface wettability and water retention. The as-fabricated cellulose-based wet wipe substrate displays a superb water retention capacity of 1.9 times, an excellent water absorption capacity (completely wetted with 0° water contact angle), and a perfect wet tensile index of 3.32 N.m.g-1. It is far better than state-of-the-art wet toilet wipe on the market (non-woven). The prepared renewable and degradable cellulose-based substrate with excellent mechanical strength has potential application prospects in diverse commercially available products such as sanitary and medical wet wipes.

Tensile fatigue strength and endurance limit of human meniscus.

Project description:The knee menisci are prone to mechanical fatigue injury from the cyclic tensile stresses that are generated during daily joint loading. Here we characterize the tensile fatigue behavior of human medial meniscus and investigate the effect of aging on fatigue strength. Test specimens were excised from the medial meniscus of young (under 40 years) and older (over 65 years) fresh-frozen cadaver knees. Cyclic uniaxial tensile loads were applied parallel to the primary circumferential fibers at 70%, 50%, 40%, or 30% of the predicted ultimate tensile strength (UTS) until failure occurred or one million cycles was reached. Equations for fatigue strength (S-N curve) and the probability of fatigue failure (unreliability curves) were created from the measured number of cycles to failure. The mean number of cycles to failure at 70%, 50%, 40%, and 30% of UTS were estimated to be approximately 500, 40000, 340000, and 3 million cycles, respectively. The endurance limit, defined as the tensile stress that can be safely applied for the average lifetime of use (250 million cycles), was estimated to be 10% of UTS (∼1.0 MPa). When cyclic tensile stresses exceeded 30% of UTS (∼3.0 MPa), the probability of fatigue failure rapidly increased. While older menisci were generally weaker and more susceptible to fatigue failures at high-magnitude tensile stresses, both young and older age groups had similar fatigue resistance at low-magnitude tensile stresses. In addition, we found that fatigue failures occurred after the dynamic modulus decreased during cyclic loading by approximately 20%. This experimental study has quantified fundamental fatigue properties that are essential to properly predict and prevent injury in meniscus and other soft fibrous tissues.

Morphogenesis of Plasmodium zoites is uncoupled from tensile strength.

Project description:A shared feature of the motile stages (zoites) of malaria parasites is a cortical cytoskeletal structure termed subpellicular network (SPN), thought to define and maintain cell shape. Plasmodium alveolins comprise structural components of the SPN, and alveolin gene knockout causes morphological abnormalities that coincide with markedly reduced tensile strength of the affected zoites, indicating the alveolins are prime cell shape determinants. Here, we characterize a novel SPN protein of Plasmodium berghei ookinetes and sporozoites named G2 (glycine at position 2), which is structurally unrelated to alveolins. G2 knockout abolishes parasite transmission and causes zoite malformations and motility defects similar to those observed in alveolin null mutants. Unlike alveolins, however, G2 contributes little to tensile strength, arguing against a cause-effect relationship between tensile strength and cell shape. We also show that G2 null mutant sporozoites display an abnormal arrangement of their subpellicular microtubules. These results provide important new understanding of the factors that determine zoite morphogenesis, as well as the potential roles of the cortical cytoskeleton in gliding motility.

Extraordinary tensile strength and ductility of scalable nanoporous graphene.

Project description:While the compressive strength-density scaling relationship of ultralight cellular graphene materials has been extensively investigated, high tensile strength and ductility have not been realized in the theoretically strongest carbon materials because of high flaw sensitivity under tension and weak van der Waals interplanar bonding between graphene sheets. In this study, we report that large-scale ultralight nanoporous graphene with three-dimensional bicontinuous nanoarchitecture shows orders of magnitude higher strength and elastic modulus than all reported ultralight carbon materials under both compression and tension. The high-strength nanoporous graphene also exhibits excellent tensile ductility and work hardening, which are comparable to well-designed metamaterials but until now had not been realized in ultralight cellular materials. The excellent mechanical properties of the nanoporous graphene benefit from seamless graphene sheets in the bicontinuous nanoporosity that effectively preserves the intrinsic strength of atomically thick graphene in the three-dimensional cellular nanoarchitecture.

High-Tensile Strength Tapes Show Greater Ultimate Failure Load and Less Stiffness Than High-Tensile Strength Sutures in a Subpectoral Biceps Tenodesis Porcine Model.

Project description:PurposeTo compare the biomechanical properties of high-tensile strength tape and a high-tensile strength suture in subpectoral biceps tenodesis using a suture anchor in a porcine tendon model.MethodsA total of 24 artificial composite (polymer and glass fiber) humeri and porcine flexor profundus tendons were used. Two types of suture materials, high-tensile strength sutures (group S) and high-tensile strength tapes (group T), were evaluated. After we inserted metallic suture anchors with either 2 sutures or tapes 5 cm from the superomedial corner of the greater tuberosity, a Krackow suture technique was used to secure the tendons. After a preload of 5 N for 2 minutes, a cyclic loading test from 5 to 70 N was conducted for 500 cycles. Finally, the specimen was loaded to failure at a rate of 1 mm/s.ResultsThere were no significant between-group differences in elongation after cyclic loading and elongation at failure load for group S and group T (P = .977 and .630, respectively). The ultimate failure loads in group T (278.2 ± 54 N) were significantly greater than those in group S (249.4 ± 32 N) (P = .028). In contrast, the stiffness values in group T (28.5 ± 4.0 N/mm) were significantly lower than those in group S (32.3 ± 4.5 N) (P = .028). Ten specimens in group S and 8 specimens in group T failed, with tendons being cut through by the sutures, whereas the other 2 specimens in group S and 4 specimens in group T failed due to suture breakage.ConclusionsUsing high-tensile strength tapes in subpectoral biceps tenodesis using a suture anchor leads to significantly greater ultimate failure load as compared with using high-tensile strength sutures in a porcine model. Although lower levels of stiffness were found in high-tensile strength tape group, the difference in the means were not large between 2 groups.Clinical relevanceA strong suture-tendon structure may prevent clinical failure of a subpectoral biceps tenodesis using a suture anchor.

Fast tablet tensile strength prediction based on non-invasive analytics.

Project description:In this paper, linkages between tablet surface roughness, tablet compression forces, material properties, and the tensile strength of tablets were studied. Pure sodium halides (NaF, NaBr, NaCl, and NaI) were chosen as model substances because of their simple and similar structure. Based on the data available in the literature and our own measurements, various models were made to predict the tensile strength of the tablets. It appeared that only three parameters-surface roughness, upper punch force, and the true density of material-were needed to predict the tensile strength of a tablet. Rather surprising was that the surface roughness alone was capable in the prediction. The used new 3D imaging method (Flash sizer) was roughly a thousand times quicker in determining tablet surface roughness than traditionally used laser profilometer. Both methods gave practically analogous results. It is finally suggested that the rapid 3D imaging can be a potential in-line PAT tool to predict mechanical properties of tablets in production.

UV-Cured Transparent Flexible Silicone Materials with High Tensile Strength.

Project description:Transparent flexible silicone materials are useful in electronics, sensors, coatings, and so forth. However, to the best of our knowledge, the tensile strength of unreinforced silicone rubber is lower than 0.4 MPa, and the highest tensile strength of highly transparent silicone-modified materials is no more than 1.5 MPa. The poor mechanical property limits their further application in electronic devices. Here, a kind of UV-cured transparent flexible silicone materials with tensile strength as high as 2.2 MPa were prepared by a UV-initiated thiol-ene reaction of a sulfur-containing hyperbranched polycarbosilane and a thiol silicone resin. Interestingly, their tensile strength can increase from 2.2 to 5.6 and 5.7 MPa after being immersed in an aqueous solution of 10 wt % hydrochloric acid and 10 wt % NaCl for 7 days, respectively. It is argued that the increase of the tensile strength of cured films may be attributed to the -SiOCH3 of the residual 3-trimethoxysilylpropanethiol in the sulfur-containing hyperbranched polycarbosilane. The performances of the cured materials were investigated in detail. These silicone materials exhibit transparency higher than 95% (wavenumber in the range of 400-800 nm), and the initial thermal decomposition temperatures of the cured materials are about 340 °C. These materials also show good anticorrosion property, and the mass loss of the materials immersed in the aqueous solution mediums is no more than 0.39 wt % even for 15 days.
