Acid sphingomyelinase (aSMase) is involved in the generation of metabolites that function as part of the sphingolipid signaling pathway. It catalyzes the breakdown of sphingomyelin into ceramide, a bioactive lipid that, among other roles, is involved in regulation of apoptosis.
