Syntheses, Structures, and Characteristics of Three Metal Complexes Constructed Using Hexacarboxylic Acid.

ABSTRACT: In this study, three new 3D coordination polymers (CPs), {[Cd3(L)(H2O)6]·H2O}n (1), {[Cu1.5(L)0.5(bimb)1.5]·5H2O·DMF}n (2), and {[Mn1.5(H3L)(bibp)0.5(H2O)2]·3H2O}n (3) (bimb= 1,3-bis(imidazol-1-yl)benzene, bibp= 1,4-bis((4-imidazol-1-yl)benzyl)piperazine), were prepared under solvothermal or hydrothermal conditions based on a hexadentate ligand (1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine hexa-acetic acid (H6L)). Structural elucidations were carried out by IR spectra along with single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, while thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) (dynamic and isothermal) and XRD techniques were used for property evaluations of the polymers. Furthermore, the fluorescence properties and detection of the Fe3+ ions in 1 were tested at room temperature, and the electrochemical behavior of 2 is also stated in this article.

Project description:Complexes of the alkali metals Li-Cs with 3-thiophenecarboxylate (3tpc), 2-methyl-3-furoate (2m3fur), 3-furoate (3fur), 4-hydroxycinnamate (4hocin), and 4-hydroxybenzoate (4hob) ions were prepared via neutralisation reactions, and the structures of [Li2(3tpc)2]n (1Li); [K2(3tpc)2]n (1K); [Rb(3tpc)(H2O)]n (1Rb); [Cs{H(3tpc)2}]n (1Cs); [Li2(2m3fur)2(H2O)3] (2Li); [K2(2m3fur)2(H2O)]n (2K); [Li(3fur)]n(3Li); [K(4hocin](H2O)3]n (4K); [Rb{H(4hocin)2}]n.nH2O (4Rb); [Cs(4hocin)(H2O)]n (4Cs); [Li(4hob)]n (5Li); [K(4hob)(H2O)3]n (5K); [Rb(4hob)(H2O)]n (5Rb); and [Cs(4hob)(H2O)]n (5Cs) were determined via X-ray crystallography. Bulk products were also characterised via XPD, IR, and TGA measurements. No sodium derivatives could be obtained as crystallographically suitable single crystals. All were obtained as coordination polymers with a wide variety of carboxylate-binding modes, except for dinuclear 2Li. Under conditions that normally gave coordinated carboxylate ions, the ligation of hydrogen dicarboxylate ions was observed in 1Cs and 4Rb, with short H-bonds and short O…O distances associated with the acidic hydrogen. The alkali-metal carboxylates showed corrosion inhibitor properties inferior to those of the corresponding rare-earth carboxylates.

Syntheses and crystal structures of three [M(acac)2(TMEDA)] complexes (M = Mn, Fe and Zn).

Project description:The complexes bis-(acetyl-acetonato-κ2 O,O')(N,N,N',N'-tetra-methyl-ethylenedi-amine-κ2 N,N')manganese(II), [Mn(C5H7O2)2(C6H16N2)], bis-(acetyl-acetonato-κ2 O,O')(N,N,N',N'-tetra-methyl-ethylenedi-amine-κ2 N,N')iron(II), [Fe(C5H7O2)2(C6H16N2)], and bis-(acetyl-acetonato-κ2 O,O')(N,N,N',N'-tetra-methyl-ethylenedi-amine-κ2 N,N')zinc(II), [Zn(C5H7O2)2(C6H16N2)], were synthesized from the reaction of the corresponding metal acetyl-acetonates [M(acac)2(H2O)2] with N,N,N',N'-tetra-methyl-ethylenedi-amine (TMEDA) in toluene. Each of the complexes displays a central metal atom which is nearly octa-hedrally surrounded by two chelating acac and one chelating TMEDA ligand, resulting in an N2O4 coordination set. Despite the chemical similarity of the complex units, the packing patterns for compounds 1-3 are different and thus the crystal structures are not isotypic.

Fabrication of Three-Dimensionally Deformable Metal Structures Using Precision Electroforming.

Project description:It is difficult to fabricate three-dimensional structures using semiconductor-process technology, because it is based on two-dimensional layered structure fabrication and the etching of thin films. In this study, we fabricated metal structures that can be dynamically deformed from two-dimensional to three-dimensional shapes by combining patterning using photolithography with electroforming technology. First, a resist structure was formed on a Cu substrate. Then, using a Ni sulfamate electroforming bath, a Ni structure was formed by electroforming the fabricated resist structure. Finally, the resist structure was removed to release the Ni structure fabricated on the substrate, and electroforming was used to Au-plate the entire surface. Scanning-electron microscopy revealed that the structure presented a high aspect ratio (thickness/resist width = 3.5), and metal structures could be fabricated without defects across the entire surface, including a high aspect ratio. The metallic structures had an average film thickness of 12.9 µm with σ = 0.49 µm, hardness of 600 HV, and slit width of 7.9 µm with σ = 0.25 µm. This microfabrication enables the fabrication of metal structures that deform dynamically in response to hydrodynamic forces in liquid and can be applied to fields such as environmental science, agriculture, and medicine.

Polyoxomolybdate Layered Crystals Constructed from a Heterocyclic Surfactant: Syntheses, Pseudopolymorphism and Introduction of Metal Cations.

Project description:Crystals with layered structures are crucial for the construction of functional materials exhibiting intercalation, ionic conductivity, or emission properties. Polyoxometalate crystals hybridized with surfactant cations have distinct layered packings due to the surfactants which can form lamellar structures. Introducing metal cations into such polyoxometalate-surfactant hybrid crystals is significant for the addition of specific functions. Here, polyoxomolybdate-surfactant hybrid crystals were synthesized as single crystals, and unambiguously characterized by X-ray structure analyses. Octamolybdate ([Mo8O26]4-, Mo8) and heterocyclic surfactant of 1-dodecylpyridinium (C12py) were employed. The hybrid crystals were composed of α-type and β-type Mo8 isomers. Two crystalline phases containing α-type Mo8 were obtained as pseudopolymorphs depending on the crystallization conditions. Crystallization with the presence of rubidium and cesium cations caused the formation of metal cation-introduced hybrid crystals comprising β-Mo8 (C12py-Rb-Mo8 and C12py-Cs-Mo8). The yield of the C12py-Rb-Mo8 hybrid crystal was almost constant within crystallization temperatures of 279-303 K, while that of C12py-Cs-Mo8 decreased over 288 K. This means that the C12py-Mo8 hybrid crystal can capture Rb+ and Cs+ from the solution phase into the solids as the C12py-Rb-Mo8 and C12py-Cs-Mo8 hybrid crystals. The C12py-Mo8 hybrid crystals could be applied to ion-capturing materials for heavy metal cation removal.

Molecular Dynamics Simulations for Three-Dimensional Structures of Orotate Phosphoribosyltransferases Constructed from a Simplified Amino Acid Set.

Project description:Proteins of modern terrestrial organisms are composed of nearly 20 amino acids; however, the amino acid sets of primitive organisms may have contained fewer than 20 amino acids. Furthermore, the full set of 20 amino acids is not required by some proteins to encode their function. Indeed, simplified variants of Escherichia coli (E. coli) orotate phosphoribosyltransferase (OPRTase) constructed by Akanuma et al. and composed of a limited amino acid set exhibit significant catalytic activity for the growth of E. coli. However, its structural details are currently unclear. Here, we predict the structures of simplified variants of OPRTase using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and evaluate the accuracy of the MD simulations for simplified proteins. The three-dimensional structure of the wild-type was largely maintained in the simplified variants, but differences in the catalyst loop and C-terminal helix were observed. These results are considered sufficient to elucidate the differences in catalytic activity between the wild-type and simplified OPRTase variants. Thus, using MD simulations to make structural predictions appears to be a useful strategy when investigating non-wild-type proteins composed of reduced amino acid sets.

Three Iodoargentate-Based Hybrids Decorated by Metal Complexes: Structures, Optical/Photoelectric Properties and Theoretical Studies.

Project description:So far, the development of new iodoargentate-based hybrids, especially those compounds with metal complex cations, and the understanding of their structure-activity relationships have been of vital importance but full of challenges. Herein, using the in-situ-generated metal complex cations as structural directing agents, three new iodoargentate-based hybrids, namely, [Co(phen)3]Ag2PbI6 (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; 1), [Ni(5,5-dmpy)3]Ag7I9·CH3CN (5,5-dmpy = 5,5-dimethyl-2,2-bipyridine; 2) and [Co(5,5-dmpy)3]Ag5I8 (3), have been solvothermally prepared and then structurally characterized. Compound 1 represents one new heterometallic Ag-Pb-I compound characteristic of the chain-like [Ag2PbI6]n2n- anions. Compound 2 features the straight one-dimensional (1D) [Ag7I9]n2n- anionic moieties, while compound 3 contains infrequent two types of curved [Ag5I8]n3n- anions. Optical properties reveal that the title compounds exhibit interesting semiconductor behaviors with the band gaps of 1.59-2.78 eV, which endow them with good photoelectric switching performances under the alternate light irradiations. We also present their Hirshfeld surface analyses, and the theoretical studies (band structures, density of states (DOS) and partial density of states (PDOS)).

Synthesis, crystal structures and, magnetic and photoluminescence properties of lanthanide-based metal-organic frameworks constructed with 2,5-dihydroxybenzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid.

Project description:Four new lanthanide(iii) coordination polymers (1-4) have been synthesized by using 2,5-dihydroxybenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate (Dhbdc, C8H6O6 2-) as a ligand and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, TGA-DSC (Thermogravimetric Analysis-Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The isolated complexes include; [Ce(Dhbdc)(H2O)3Cl] n (1) and [Ln(Dhbdc)1.5(H2O)2] n ·3n(C2H6O)·nH2O [Ln = Eu (2), Gd (3) and Tb (4)]. The structural analysis reveals that compound 1 is a two-dimensional polymer in which the cerium atoms are coordinated by six oxygen and two bridging chloride ions adopting a dodecahedral geometry. The compounds 2-4 are isomorphous and their extended structures consist of three-dimensional supramolecular frameworks encapsulating [001] channels occupied by the guest water and ethanol molecules. The metal atoms in 2-4 exhibit a square antiprism geometry. All these compounds have O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds originating from the coordinated water and solvent molecules that help to consolidate the structures. The compounds 1, 3 and 4 were investigated for magnetic properties and they exhibited weak antiferromagnetic coupling interactions between the lanthanides as per the Curie Weiss law. Anisotropic nature of 3 and 4 has been depicted as per magnetization versus field plots. Complex 4 behaves as a soft magnetic material as compared to 3. The luminescence studies indicate that compounds 2, 3 and 4 show ligand-centred fluorescence, which is significantly enhanced in the case of 4.

Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complexes Incorporating Aromatic Phosphonate Ligands: Syntheses, Structures, and Tunable Optical Properties.

Project description:The incorporation of phosphonate ligands into the cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes can not only tune their electronic and optical properties but also provide the possibility of anchoring these molecules on the semiconductor surfaces for further applications. Herein, we report the first examples of mononuclear cyclometallated iridium(III) complexes incorporating phosphonate ligands, namely, [Ir(ppy)2(HL1)]·0.5H2O (1), [Ir(ppy)2(HL2)]·0.5H2O (2), [Ir(dfppy)2(HL1)] (3), and [Ir(dfppy)2(HL2)]·3.5H2O (4) (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, dfppy = 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine, H2L1 = 2-pyridylphosphonic acid, H2L2 = 2-quinolinephosphonic acid). Luminescent spectra are studied both in solution and in the solid state, and significantly red-shifted broad emission bands are observed in complexes 2 and 4. The experimental and density functional theory (DFT) time-dependent-DFT calculation results indicate that the expansion of the aromatic conjugation length in the ancillary phosphonate ligands decreases the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels of the systems, originating from the triplet state associated with the ancillary ligand such as 3MLCT, 3LC, and 3LLCT charge-transfer transitions.

Bis-cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes with terpyridine analogues: syntheses, structures, spectroscopy and computational studies.

Project description:Two ligands based upon a 2,6-disubstituted pyridine bridge introduce bis-quinoxalinyl units in a fashion that yields analogues to the archetypal terdentate ligand, 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine. The ligands were synthesised from the key intermediate 2,6-bis(bromoacetyl)pyridine: a new, high-yielding route is described for this reagent. Two ligand variants (differentiated by H/Me substituents on the quinoxaline ring) were explored as coordinating moieties for iridium(iii) in the development of luminescent complexes. Computational studies (DFT approaches employing B3LYP, B3LYP/LANL2DZ, and M062X/LANL2DZ levels) were used to investigate the geometric and coordination mode preferences of the new ligands and two possibilities arose from theoretical investigations: [Ir(N^N^N)2]3+ and [Ir(N^N^C)2]+, with the former predicted to be more energetically favourable. Upon synthesis and isolation of the Ir(iii) complexes, X-ray crystallographic studies revealed coordination spheres that were cyclometalated, the structures both showing a [Ir(N^N^C)2]PF6 arrangement. Further spectroscopic characterization via NMR confirmed the ligand arrangements in the complexes, and photophysical studies, supported by DFT, showed that a mixture of metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) and intra-ligand charge transfer (ILCT) character is likely to contribute to the emission features of the complexes, which phosphoresce orange-red (λ em = 580-618 nm). The emission wavelength was influenced by the substituents on the quinoxaline ring (H vs. Me), thereby implying further tuneability is possible with future ligand iterations.

Syntheses and crystal structures of three salts of 1-(4-nitro-phenyl)-piperazine.

Project description:The crystal structures and Hirshfeld surface analyses of three salts of 1-(4-nitro-phenyl)-piperazine with 2-chloro-benzoic acid, 2-bromo-benzoic acid and 2-iodo-benzoic acid are reported. The chloro-benzoate salt, C10H14N3O2 +·C7H4ClO2 -, contains whole-ion-disordered cations and anions, which were modeled with two equivalent conformations with occupancies of 0.745 (10)/0.255 (10) and 0.563 (13)/0.437 (13), respectively. The bromo-benzoate and iodo-benzoate derivatives are isomorphous and crystallize as hemihydrates, viz. C10H14N3O2 +·C7H4BrO2 -·0.5H2O and C10H14N3O2 +·C7H4IO2 -·0.5H2O, respectively [the water mol-ecule is disordered over two locations with occupancies of 0.276 (3)/0.223 (3) for the iodo-benzoate derivative]. In the extended structures, all three salts feature an R 4 4(12) loop of two anions and two cations linked by N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.
