Physical Characteristics of and Transient Response from Thin Cylindrical Piezoelectric Transducers Used in a Petroleum Logging Tool.

ABSTRACT: We report on a transient response model of thin cylindrical piezoelectric transducers used in the petroleum logging tools, parallel to a recently established transient response model of thin spherical-shell transducers. Established on a series of parallel-connected equivalent-circuits, this model provides insightful information on the physical characteristics of the thin cylindrical piezoelectric transducers, i.e., the transient response, center-frequency, and directivity of the transducer. We have developed a measurement system corresponding to the new model to provide a state-of-the-art comparison between theory and experiment. We found that the measured results were in good agreement with those of theoretical calculations.

Advances in Sonothrombolysis Techniques Using Piezoelectric Transducers.

Project description:One of the great advancements in the applications of piezoelectric materials is the application for therapeutic medical ultrasound for sonothrombolysis. Sonothrombolysis is a promising ultrasound based technique to treat blood clots compared to conventional thrombolytic treatments or mechanical thrombectomy. Recent clinical trials using transcranial Doppler ultrasound, microbubble mediated sonothrombolysis, and catheter directed sonothrombolysis have shown promise. However, these conventional sonothrombolysis techniques still pose clinical safety limitations, preventing their application for standard of care. Recent advances in sonothrombolysis techniques including targeted and drug loaded microbubbles, phase change nanodroplets, high intensity focused ultrasound, histotripsy, and improved intravascular transducers, address some of the limitations of conventional sonothrombolysis treatments. Here, we review the strengths and limitations of these latest pre-clincial advancements for sonothrombolysis and their potential to improve clinical blood clot treatments.

Wearable Piezoelectric Airflow Transducers for Human Respiratory and Metabolic Monitoring.

Project description:Despite the importance of respiration and metabolism measurement in daily life, they are not widely available to ordinary people because of sophisticated and expensive equipment. Here, we first report a straightforward and economical approach to monitoring respiratory function and metabolic rate using a wearable piezoelectric airflow transducer (WPAT). A self-shielded bend sensor is designed by sticking two uniaxially drawn piezoelectric poly l-lactic acid films with different cutting angles, and then the bend sensor is mounted on one end of a plastic tube to engineer the WPAT. The airflow sensing principle of the WPAT is theoretically determined through finite element simulation, and the WPAT is calibrated with a pulse calibration method. We prove that the WPAT has similar accuracy (correlation coefficient >0.99) to a pneumotachometer in respiratory flow and lung volume assessment. We demonstrate metabolism measurement using the WPAT and the relationship between minute volume and metabolic rates via human wear trials. The mean difference of measured metabolic rates between the WPAT and a Biopac indirect calorimeter is 0.015 kcal/min, which shows comparable performance. Significantly, unlike the Biopac indirect calorimeter with an airflow sensor, an oxygen gas sensor, and a carbon dioxide gas sensor, we merely use the simple-structured WPAT to measure metabolism. Thus, we expect the WPAT technology to provide a precise, convenient, and cost-effective respiratory and metabolic monitoring solution for next-generation medical home care applications and wearable healthcare systems.

Acoustic and flow data of fluidic and piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers.

Project description:This data article presents characteristic acoustic and flow data of a fluidic ultrasonic transducer as well as acoustic data of a commercial piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer used in non-destructive testing for civil engineering. The flow data has been acquired using hot-wire anemometry and a Pitot tube. The three-dimensional acoustic data of both devices has been acquired using a calibrated microphone. The distribution of characteristic acoustic properties of both transducers are extracted and given in addition to the raw data. The data presented in the article will be a valuable source for reference and validation, both for developing fluidic and alternate ultrasound generation technologies. Furthermore, they will give additional insight into the acoustic-flow interaction phenomena of high speed switching devices. This article is accompanying the paper Experimental Analysis of the Acoustic Field of an Ultrasonic Pulse Induced by a Fluidic Switch (Bühling et al., 2021) published in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, where the data is interpreted in detail and the rationale for characteristic sound properties of the fluidic transducer are given.

Fingertip tactile sensation via piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers with an amplified interface.

Project description:Tactile devices are often used in the field of robotics; however, the development of compact high-resolution tactile devices remains challenging. In this study, we developed a haptic device for force presentation using a DC motor and a tactile sensation device to simultaneously present haptic and tactile stimuli. A microelectromechanical system was selected to maintain the compactness of the tactile device. Piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers are known for high-power stimulation, and we selected lanthanum-doped lead zirconate titanate as the high-power amplified actuator. A finger mount structure that transfers force for amplifying ultrasonic waves was considered to combine acoustic pressure and aeroacoustics by attaching silicone rubber. The device was fabricated, and the performance of the tactile sensations was evaluated. The developed device uses the novel concept of combining acoustic pressure and aeroacoustics, and its compactness renders it suitable for wearable systems.

Experimental Study on Damage Detection in ECC-Concrete Composite Beams Using Piezoelectric Transducers.

Project description:The use of engineered cementitious composite (ECC) has attracted extensive attention in recent years because of the highly enhanced ductility owing to its unique strain-hardening behavior. In this paper, an electromechanical impedance-based technique is used to monitor the structural damage of RC beams strengthened with an ECC layer at the tensile zone. To achieve this purpose, three specimens are tested under bending loads to evaluate the proposed damage detection methodology. Five externally bonded PZT transducers are uniformly distributed at the surface of the ECC layer of the beams to measure the output conductance signatures in a healthy state and in different damage scenarios induced by different load levels. Test results showed that discrepancies exist between the signals measured in the intact state and each damage state, which can be used to evaluate the structural integrity changes. To assess the damage of ECC-concrete composite beams quantitatively, the statistical scalar index-root mean square deviation (RMSD) is used as the index, which can be calculated from the variations of conductance measurements of PZT sensors. The damage index values of the uniformly distributed PZT sensors provided cogent evidence of damage and revealed the evolution of structural damage. The crack patterns of beams at different damage levels are compared with the damage index values, and it shows the damage location can be derived from the measured conductance signatures of an array of PZT transducers.

Monitoring transient nanoparticle interactions with liposome-confined plasmonic transducers.

Project description:The encapsulation of individual pairs of plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) in liposomes is introduced as a new strategy for utilizing plasmon coupling to monitor interactions between co-confined NPs in a nanoconfinement that ensures high local NP concentrations. We apply the approach to monitor transient binding contacts between noncovalently tethered 55 nm diameter gold NPs, which were functionalized with cytosine (C)-rich DNAs, in acidic and mildly basic buffer conditions. At pH = 8, a rich spectral dynamics indicates DNA-mediated transient binding and unbinding of co-confined NPs due to weak attractive interparticle interactions. A decrease in pH from 8 to 4 is observed to favor the associated state for some co-confined NPs, presumably due to a stabilization of the bound dimer configuration through noncanonical C-C+ bonds between the DNA-functionalized NPs. Plasmonic nanoemitters whose spectral response switches in response to chemical cues (in this work pH) represent optical transducers with a rich application space in chemical sensing, cell analysis and nanophotonics.

Piezoelectric Energy Harvester Based on LiNbO3 Thin Films.

Project description:This paper reports the results of the influence of the energy of laser pulses during laser ablation on the morphology and electro-physical properties of LiNbO3 nanocrystalline films. It is found that increasing laser pulse energy from 180 to 220 mJ results in the concentration of charge carriers in LiNbO3 films decreasing from 8.6 × 1015 to 1.0 × 1013 cm-3, with the mobility of charge carriers increasing from 0.43 to 17.4 cm2/(V·s). In addition, experimental studies of sublayer material effects on the geometric parameters of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are performed. It is found that the material of the lower electrode has a significant effect on the formation of CNTs. CNTs obtained at the same growth time on a sample with a Cr sublayer have a smaller diameter and a longer length compared to samples with a V sublayer. Based on the obtained results, the architecture of the energy nanogenerator is proposed. The current generated by the nanogenerator is 18 nA under mechanical stress of 600 nN. The obtained piezoelectric nanogenerator parameters are used to estimate the parameters of the hybrid-carbon-nanostructures-based piezoelectric energy converter. Obtained results are promising for the development of efficient energy converters for alternative energy devices based on lead-free ferroelectric films.

Wafer-scale heterostructured piezoelectric bio-organic thin films.

Project description:Piezoelectric biomaterials are intrinsically suitable for coupling mechanical and electrical energy in biological systems to achieve in vivo real-time sensing, actuation, and electricity generation. However, the inability to synthesize and align the piezoelectric phase at a large scale remains a roadblock toward practical applications. We present a wafer-scale approach to creating piezoelectric biomaterial thin films based on γ-glycine crystals. The thin film has a sandwich structure, where a crystalline glycine layer self-assembles and automatically aligns between two polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) thin films. The heterostructured glycine-PVA films exhibit piezoelectric coefficients of 5.3 picocoulombs per newton or 157.5 × 10-3 volt meters per newton and nearly an order of magnitude enhancement of the mechanical flexibility compared with pure glycine crystals. With its natural compatibility and degradability in physiological environments, glycine-PVA films may enable the development of transient implantable electromechanical devices.

ZnO Thin Films Growth Optimization for Piezoelectric Application.

Project description:The piezoelectric response of ZnO thin films in heterostructure-based devices is strictly related to their structure and morphology. We optimize the fabrication of piezoelectric ZnO to reduce its surface roughness, improving the crystalline quality, taking into consideration the role of the metal electrode underneath. The role of thermal treatments, as well as sputtering gas composition, is investigated by means of atomic force microscopy and x-ray diffraction. The results show an optimal reduction in surface roughness and at the same time a good crystalline quality when 75% O2 is introduced in the sputtering gas and deposition is performed between room temperature and 573 K. Subsequent annealing at 773 K further improves the film quality. The introduction of Ti or Pt as bottom electrode maintains a good surface and crystalline quality. By means of piezoelectric force microscope, we prove a piezoelectric response of the film in accordance with the literature, in spite of the low ZnO thickness and the reduced grain size, with a unipolar orientation and homogenous displacement when deposited on Ti electrode.

Printed Multilayer Piezoelectric Transducers on Paper for Haptic Feedback and Dual Touch-Sound Sensation.

Project description:With a growing number of electronic devices surrounding our daily life, it becomes increasingly important to create solutions for clear and simple communication and interaction at the human machine interface (HMI). Haptic feedback solutions play an important role as they give a clear direct link and response to the user. This work demonstrates multifunctional haptic feedback devices based on fully printed piezoelectric transducers realized with functional polymers on thin paper substrate. The devices are flexible; lightweight and show very high out-of-plane deflection of 213 µm at a moderate driving voltage of 50 Vrms (root mean square) achieved by an innovative multilayer design with up to five individually controllable active layers. The device creates a very clear haptic sensation to the human skin with a blocking force of 0.6 N at the resonance frequency of 320 Hz, which is located in the most sensitive range of the human fingertip. Additionally the transducer generates audible information above two kilohertz with a remarkable high sound pressure level. Thus the paper-based approach can be used for interactive displays in combination with touch sensation; sound and color prints. The work gives insights into the manufacturing process; the electrical characteristics; and an in-depth analysis of the 3D deflection of the device under variable conditions.
