A Comparison of Methods to Measure the Coupling Coefficient of Electromagnetic Vibration Energy Harvesters.

ABSTRACT: Vibration energy harvesters transform environmental vibration energy into usable electrical energy. The transformation is only possible because of a coupling between the mechanical part of the energy harvester and the electric circuit. This paper compares several measurement methods to determine the electromagnetic coupling coefficient. These methods are applied to various implementations of an energy harvester and the results are compared with one another and with simulation data by analyzing the magnetic flux. The average deviation between the measurement methods and the simulation data in our study was 5%. This good agreement validates the methods. Based on this, we recommend determination of the coupling coefficient and the optimum load resistance for maximum power harvesting on the basis of simulations and the open circuit method, because this procedure leads to the shortest measurement times.

Modeling and simulation of linear and nonlinear MEMS scale electromagnetic energy harvesters for random vibration environments.

Project description:The simulation results for electromagnetic energy harvesters (EMEHs) under broad band stationary Gaussian random excitations indicate the importance of both a high transformation factor and a high mechanical quality factor to achieve favourable mean power, mean square load voltage, and output spectral density. The optimum load is different for random vibrations and for sinusoidal vibration. Reducing the total damping ratio under band-limited random excitation yields a higher mean square load voltage. Reduced bandwidth resulting from decreased mechanical damping can be compensated by increasing the electrical damping (transformation factor) leading to a higher mean square load voltage and power. Nonlinear EMEHs with a Duffing spring and with linear plus cubic damping are modeled using the method of statistical linearization. These nonlinear EMEHs exhibit approximately linear behaviour under low levels of broadband stationary Gaussian random vibration; however, at higher levels of such excitation the central (resonant) frequency of the spectral density of the output voltage shifts due to the increased nonlinear stiffness and the bandwidth broadens slightly. Nonlinear EMEHs exhibit lower maximum output voltage and central frequency of the spectral density with nonlinear damping compared to linear damping. Stronger nonlinear damping yields broader bandwidths at stable resonant frequency.

Method for controlling vibration by exploiting piecewise-linear nonlinearity in energy harvesters.

Project description:Vibration energy is becoming a significant alternative solution for energy generation. Recently, a great deal of research has been conducted on how to harvest energy from vibration sources ranging from ocean waves to human motion to microsystems. In this paper, a theoretical model of a piecewise-linear (PWL) nonlinear vibration harvester that has potential applications in variety of fields is proposed and numerically investigated. This new technique enables automatic frequency tunability in the energy harvester by controlling the gap size in the PWL oscillator so that it is able to adapt to changes in excitations. To optimize the performance of the proposed system, a control method combining the response prediction, signal measurement and gap adjustment mechanism is proposed in this paper. This new energy harvester not only overcomes the limitation of traditional linear energy harvesters that can only provide the maximum power generation efficiency over a narrow frequency range but also improves the performance of current nonlinear energy harvesters that are not as efficient as linear energy harvesters at resonance. The proposed system is demonstrated in several case studies to illustrate its effectiveness for a number of different excitations.

Parameter optimization analysis of rotary electromagnetic vibration energy harvester for performance enhancement under free vibration.

Project description:In this paper, three new important aspects of rotary electromagnetic vibration energy harvesting technology (RE-VEH) are concerned and investigated: (i) vibro-electric coupling mechanism of the RE-VEH system is studied through theoretical modeling; (ii) quantitative analysis of system parameters based on numerical simulation method is carried out for the optimal design of RE-VEH; and (iii) dynamic power output performance of the RE-VEH system in free vibration is discussed. The parameter adjusting methods of the RE-VEH system in free vibration mode are obtained through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. The experimental results show that the power output performance of RE-VEH in free vibration mode matches the numerical simulation results. The simulation and experimental results show that the maximum voltage output and power output of the RE-VEH with different structure parameters under free vibration can be up to the level of 100∼101 V/watt. The above results indicate that RE-VEH in a free vibration environment has significant energy output performance.

Effective Electron-Vibration Coupling by Ab Initio Methods.

Project description:The description of electron-phonon coupling in materials is complex, with varying definitions of coupling constants in the literature and different theoretical approaches available. This article analyzes different levels of theory to introduce and compute these coupling constants. Within the quasi-particle picture, we derive an effective linear-coupling Hamiltonian, describing the interaction of electronic quasi-particles with vibrations. This description allows a comparison between coupling constants computed using density functional theory and higher-level quasi-particle approaches by identifying the Kohn-Sham potential as an approximation to the frequency-independent part of the self-energy. We also investigate their dependence on the exchange-correlation (XC) functional. Despite significant deviations of the Kohn-Sham eigenvalues, which arise from different XC functionals, the resulting coupling constants are remarkably similar. A comparison to quasi-particle methods, such as the well-established G0W0 approach, reveals significant quasi-particle weight renormalization. Surprisingly, however, in nearly all the considered cases, the coupling constants computed in the DFT framework are excellent approximates of the ones in the quasi-particle framework, which is traced back to a significant cancellation of competing terms. Other quasi-particle methods, such as the Outer Valence Green's Function approach and the ΔSCF method, are also included in the comparison. Moreover, we investigate the coupling of vibrations to excitonic excitations and find, by comparison to time-dependent density functional theory and extended multiconfiguration quasi-degenerate second-order perturbation theory, that knowing the underlying electron- and hole-vibration couplings is sufficient to accurately determine the exciton-vibration coupling constants in the studied cases.

Energy Transfer and Interference by Collective Electromagnetic Coupling.

Project description:The physics of collective optical response of molecular assemblies, pioneered by Dicke in 1954, has long been at the center of theoretical and experimental scrutiny. The influence of the environment on such phenomena is also of great interest due to various important applications in, e.g., energy conversion devices. In this Letter, we demonstrate both experimentally and theoretically the spatial modulations of the collective decay rates of molecules placed in proximity to a metal interface. We show in a very simple framework how the cooperative optical response can be analyzed in terms of intermolecular correlations causing interference between the response of different molecules and the polarization induced on a nearby metallic boundary and predict similar collective interference phenomena in excitation energy transfer between molecular aggregates.

Rigid-Flex PCB Technology with Embedded Fluidic Cavities and Its Application in Electromagnetic Energy Harvesters.

Project description:A technology platform based on commercial printed circuit boards (PCB) technology is developed and presented. It integrates rigid flame retardant (FR)-4 boards, flexible polyimide (PI) structures, and embedded cavities for micro- and meso-scale applications. The cavities or channels can be filled with fluids for microfluidic and lab-on-chip systems. In this study, an electromagnetic energy harvester with enhanced output was designed and implemented in the platform. To enhance harvester output, the embedded cavities were filled with ferrofluid (FF) to improve the overall magnetic circuit design and electromechanical coupling of the device. The fabricated PCB-based harvester had a dimension of 20 mm × 20 mm × 4 mm. Vibration tests of the harvesters were conducted with different magnet sizes and different FF. Test results showed up to a 70% enhancement of output voltage and a 195% enhancement of output power when the cavities were filled with oil-based FF as compared with harvesters without FF. When the cavities were filled with water-based FF, the enhancement of voltage and power increased to 25% and 50%, respectively. The maximum output power delivered to a matched load at a 196-Hz resonance frequency and 1 grms vibration was estimated to be 2.3 µW, corresponding to an area power density of 0.58 µW/cm² and a volume power density of 1.4 µW/cm³, respectively.

Comparison of Metal-Based PZT and PMN-PT Energy Harvesters Fabricated by Aerosol Deposition Method.

Project description:In this study, polycrystalline lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (PMN-PT) was explored as an alternative piezoelectric material, with a higher power density for energy harvesting (EH), and comprehensively compared to the widely used polycrystalline lead zirconate titanate (PZT). First, the size distribution and piezoelectric properties of PZT and PMN-PT raw powders and ceramics were compared. Thereafter, both materials were deposited on stainless-steel substrates as 10 μm thick films using the aerosol deposition method. The films were processed as {3-1}-mode cantilever-type EH devices using microelectromechanical systems. The films with different annealing temperatures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and dielectric behavior measurements. Furthermore, the mechanical and electrical properties of PMN-PT- and PZT-based devices were measured and compared. The PMN-PT-based devices showed a higher Young's modulus and lower damping ratio. Owing to their higher figure of merit and lower piezoelectric voltage constant, they showed a higher power and lower voltage than the PZT-based devices. Finally, when poly-PMN-PT material was the active layer, the output power was enhanced by 26% at the 0.5 g acceleration level. Thus, these devices exhibited promising properties, meeting the high current and low voltage requirements in integrated circuit designs.

A Micromachined Coupled-Cantilever for Piezoelectric Energy Harvesters.

Project description:This paper presents a demonstration of the feasibility of fabricating micro-cantilever harvesters with extended stress distribution and enhanced bandwidth by exploiting an M-shaped two-degrees-of-freedom design. The measured mechanical response of the fabricated device displays the predicted dual resonance peak behavior with the fundamental peak at the intended frequency. This design has the features of high energy conversion efficiency in a miniaturized environment where the available vibrational energy varies in frequency. It makes such a design suitable for future large volume production of integrated self powered sensors nodes for the Internet-of-Things.

Leveraging space-time modulation for energy coupling control in electromagnetic coupled transmission lines structures.

Project description:This article presents a technique for controlling energy coupling in a coupled transmission line system based on the space-time modulation concept. The per-unit-length mutual capacitance and mutual inductance of the structure are modulated in space and time. The main idea is based on the harmonic generation property of space-time modulated media. As the amplitude of harmonics is a function of modulation parameters it is demonstrated that by choosing an appropriate space-time modulation scheme energy of different harmonics can be engineered leading to crosstalk reduction. In the quest for designing an effective space-time modulation scheme, an analytical method is developed for the examination of the space-time modulated coupled transmission line. The proposed method which is based on the state space formulation and benefits from the coupled mode theory is fast and accurate making it feasible for design problems. To validate the proposed analytical method, a full-wave simulation method has been used. The time-varying nature of the problem makes the finite-difference-time-domain the most appropriate choice. The validity of the analytical method is rigorously verified against the developed finite-difference-time-domain technique. The interest in circuit design techniques in an IC-compatible fashion in microwave circuits and the introduction of tunable material such as graphene in the THz regime leads to a positive future for the proposed space-time modulation-based crosstalk reduction method.

An Experimental Strategy for Characterizing Inductive Elesctromagnetic Energy Harvesters.

Project description:Condition monitoring of high voltage power lines through self-powered sensor systems has become a priority for utilities with the aim of detecting potential problems, enhancing reliability of the power transmission and distribution networks and mitigating the adverse impact of faults. Energy harvesting from the magnetic field generated by the alternating current flowing through high voltage lines can supply the monitoring systems with the required power to operate without relying on hard-wiring or battery-based approaches. However, developing an energy harvester, which scavenges the power from such a limited source of energy, requires detailed design considerations, which may not result in a technically and economically optimal solution. This paper presents an innovative simulation-based strategy to characterize an inductive electromagnetic energy harvester and the power conditioning system. Performance requirements in terms of the harvested power and output voltage range, or level of magnetic core saturation can be imposed. Different harvester configurations, which satisfy the requirements, have been produced by the simulation models. The accuracy and efficiency of this approach is verified with an experimental setup based on an energy harvester, which consists of a Si-steel magnetic core and a power conditioning unit. For the worst-case scenario with a primary current of 5 A, the maximum power extracted by the harvester can be as close as 165 mW, resulting in a power density of 2.79 mW/cm3.
