Modification of Polyurethane Sponge Based on the Thiol-Ene Click Reaction and Its Application for Oil/Water Separation.

ABSTRACT: A polyurethane (PU) sponge with hydrophobic/oleophilic property was prepared based on the thiol-ene click reaction, which was a simple method with only one step. Photopolymerization was induced through UV light on the sponge surface in a homogeneous solution containing polyethylene glycol diacrylate, pentaerythritol (mercaptoacetic acid) ester, 2-hydroxy-4'-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-2-methylpropiophenone, and octadecyl methacrylate. The as-prepared sponge possessed excellent selective for oil from various types of oil/water mixtures. It also had a high absorption capacity for toluene, >21 times its self-weight, and it had about 20 times its self-weight for vegetable oil, even after five extrusion-adsorption cycles, presenting a good recyclability. It created a new method to prepare oil/water separation sponge.

Superhydrophobic Melamine Sponge Coated with Striped Polydimethylsiloxane by Thiol-Ene Click Reaction for Efficient Oil/Water Separation.

Project description:Superhydrophobic and oleophilic sponges have been demonstrated as promising candidates for oil/water separation. However, there are still challenges in large-scale fabrication of superhydrophobic sponges with low cost and feasible method for industrial applications. Herein, we report a superhydrophobic and oleophilic melamine sponge functionalized by a uniform polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film that can be easily coated onto the sponge skeleton through UV-assisted thiol-ene click reactions. The PDMS films are characterized by a hierarchically striped microstructure with an average distance less than 2 μm. Because of the striped microstructure and the hydrophobic property of silicone, a high contact angle of 156.2° was achieved. Importantly, the interconnected open-cell structure of the melamine sponge was preserved by adapting the thickness of the PDMS film. The PDMS-coated melamine sponge exhibited a desirable absorption capacity of 103-179 times its own weight with oils and organic solvents. The excellent mechanical properties of melamine and the flexibility of PDMS enable the PDMS-coated melamine sponges to be squeezed repeatedly without collapsing. This study offers a robust and effective approach in large-scale preparation of a superhydrophobic sponge for large-scale oil spill containment and environmental remediation by the inexpensive commercial polymethylvinylsilicone and facile dip-coating/UV-curing method.

Amphiphilic Bowl-Shaped Janus Particles Prepared via Thiol-Ene Click Reaction for Effective Oil-Water Separation.

Project description:Janus particles for oil-water separation have attracted widespread attention in recent years. Herein, we prepared a bowl-shaped Janus particle that could rapidly separate oil and water through a thiol-ene click reaction and selective etching. Firstly, snowman-like composite microspheres based on silica and mercaptopropyl polysilsesquioxane (SiO2@MPSQ) were prepared by a hydrolytic condensation reaction and phase separation, and the effects of the rotational speed and molar ratios on their microscopic morphologies were investigated. Subsequently, bowl-shaped Janus particles with convex hydrophilic and concave oleophilic surfaces were prepared via a thiol-ene click reaction followed by HF etching. Our amphiphilic bowl-shaped Janus particles could remarkably separate micro-sized oil droplets from an n-heptane-water emulsion with a separation efficiency of >98% within 300 s. Based on the experimental and theoretical results, we proposed the underlying mechanism for the coalescence of oil droplets upon the addition of the amphiphilic bowl-shaped Janus particles.

Self-assembly modification of polyurethane sponge for application in oil/water separation.

Project description:A polyurethane (PU) sponge with excellent oil/water separation property has been successfully prepared by modifying with octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) self-assemblies. The chemical structure, surface topography, and surface wettability of the sponge were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy, and contact angle experiments, respectively. The prepared sponge could completely absorb oil within a few seconds. In addition, it also possessed excellent selectivity for oil, high absorption capacity (25 times the self-weight), high oil retention (92.6%), and good recyclability. The sponge was synthesized by a facile, mild and inexpensive method, and has excellent potential for use in practical applications because of its desirable property of oil/water separation.

A Model for Late-Stage Modification of Polyurethane Dendrimers Using Thiol-Ene Click Chemistry.

Project description:Dendritic materials possessing urethane linkage are surprisingly more stable than similar structures having functional groups such as ether, ester, amide, or carbosilane. This generates profound interest in dendritic polyurethanes. Construction of a well-defined polyurethane dendrimer is, however, challenging because of isocyanates' high reactivity. As a model of our ongoing dendrimer-research, herein, we report a protecting group-free one-pot multicomponent Curtius reaction to furnish a robust and versatile AB2-type dendron, which ensures late-stage modification of both the dendron and dendritic macromolecule yielding a surface functionalized polyurethane dendrimer. While 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid, 11-bromoundecanol, and 4-penten-1-ol were utilized in the construction of the dendron, thiol-ene click chemistry was employed for the late-stage modification. Novel dendrons and dendrimers synthesized were characterized by NMR (1D and 2D) and high-resolution MALDI-TOF analysis. This strategy allows an easy late-stage modification of dendritic macromolecules and is highly useful in the synthesis of both symmetrical and unsymmetrical dendrimers (Janus dendrimers).

Polyurethane Sponge with a Modified Specific Surface for Repeatable Oil-Water Separation.

Project description:Oil spill accidents contaminate the oceanic environment and cause economic distress, and they continue to occur. Many methods have been developed to restore waters contaminated with spilled oil. However, still most commercially available methods are not environmentally or economically sustainable solutions. Therefore, there is a need for the development of sustainable materials with running water treatment capabilities. In recent years, a polyurethane (PU) sponge-based adsorbent has been reported as an oil-water separation and reusable adsorbent. This is because the porous 3D structure of the PU sponge provides a large surface area. However, as the PU sponge has a carboxyl group and an amino group, it exhibits hydrophilicity, so surface modification is essential for oil-water separation. Therefore, to modify the surface of PU to have hydrophobic/oleophilic properties, a hydrophobic/oleophilic adsorbent (HOA) was prepared using graphite and polydimethylsiloxane. On the basis of this, a PU sponge, a porous material, was used to manufacture an adsorbent that can be used in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. The prepared HOA can selectively adsorb water or oil and can be reused. Furthermore, continuous oil-water separation is possible through a simple flow of fluid. Therefore, it is confirmed that the studied HOA can have great potential for ocean restoration in the future as an adsorbent that mitigates the disadvantages of the currently commercialized method.

Thiol-Ene Coupling of High Oleic Sunflower Oil towards Application in the Modification of Flexible Polyurethane Foams.

Project description:High oleic sunflower oil-based polyol was obtained by thiol-ene coupling and applied in the preparation of flexible polyurethane foams. The photochemically initiated thiol-ene click reaction was carried out under UV irradiation using 2-mercaptoethanol. Bio-based polyol with hydroxyl value of 201.4 mg KOH/g was used as 30 wt% substituent of petrochemical polyether polyol in the formulations of flexible foams. Both reference foams, as well as foams modified with bio-based polyol, were formulated to have various isocyanate indices (0.85, 0.95, 1.05). Flexible foams were compared in terms of their thermomechanical properties and analyzed using FT-IR and SEM microscopy. Modification with bio-based polyol resulted in foams with superior compression properties, higher support factor, and lower resilience than reference foams. TGA and FT-IR curves confirmed the presence of urethane/urea and ether linkages in the polyurethane matrix. Moreover, double glass transition temperature corresponding to soft and hard segments of polyurethane was observed by DSC proving the phase-separated morphology.

Highly Water Dispersible Functionalized Graphene by Thermal Thiol-Ene Click Chemistry.

Project description:Functionalization of pristine graphene to achieve high water dispersibility remains as a key obstacle owing to the high hydrophobicity and absence of reactive functional groups on the graphene surface. Herein, a green and simple modification approach to prepare highly dispersible functionalized graphene via thermal thiol-ene click reaction was successfully demonstrated on pristine graphene. Specific chemical functionalities (-COO, -NH2 and -S) on the thiol precursor (L-cysteine ethyl ester) were clicked directly on the sp2 carbon of graphene framework with grafting density of 1 unit L-cysteine per 113 carbon atoms on graphene. This functionalized graphene was confirmed with high atomic content of S (4.79 at % S) as well as the presence of C-S-C and N-H species on the L-cysteine functionalized graphene (FG-CYS). Raman spectroscopy evidently corroborated the modification of graphene to FG-CYS with an increased intensity ratio of D and G band, ID/IG ratio (0.3 to 0.7), full-width at half-maximum of G band, FWHM [G] (20.3 to 35.5) and FWHM [2D] (64.8 to 90.1). The use of ethanol as the reaction solvent instead of common organic solvents minimizes the chemical hazards exposure to humans and the environment. This direct attachment of multifunctional groups on the surface of pristine graphene is highly demanded for graphene ink formulations, coatings, adsorbents, sensors and supercapacitor applications.

Thiol-Ene Click Reaction Initiated Rapid Gelation of PEGDA/Silk Fibroin Hydrogels.

Project description:In this work, poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) molecules were grafted to silk fibroin (SF) molecules via a thiol-ene click reaction under 405 nm UV illumination for the fabrication of a PEGDA/SF composite hydrogel. The composite hydrogels could be prepared in a short and controllable gelation time without the use of a photoinitiator. Features relevant to the drug delivery of the PEGDA/SF hydrogels were assessed, and the hydrogels were characterized by various techniques. The results showed that the prepared PEGDA/SF hydrogels demonstrated a good sustained-release performance with limited swelling behavior. It was found that a prior cooling step can improve the compressive strength of the hydrogels effectively. Additionally, the MTT assay indicated the prepared PEGDA/SF hydrogel is non-cytotoxic. Subcutaneous implantation of the PEGDA/SF hydrogel in Kunming mice did not induce an obvious inflammation, which revealed that the prepared PEGDA/SF hydrogel possessed good biocompatibility. Furthermore, the mechanism of the gelation process was discussed.

Protonated Melamine Sponge for Effective Oil/Water Separation.

Project description:In this study, we fabricated a superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic protonated melamine sponge for effective separation of water-rich immiscible oil/water mixtures with extremely high separation efficiency. This protonated melamine sponge exhibited excellent antifouling properties and could be used to separate oil/water mixtures continuously for up to 12 h without any increase in the oil content in filtrate. Moreover, our compressed protonated melamine sponge could separate both surfactant-free and -stabilized oil-in-water emulsions with high separation efficiencies. The high performance of this protonated melamine sponge and its efficient, energy- and cost-effective preparation suggest that it has great potential for use in practical applications.

Functional graphene by thiol-ene click chemistry.

Project description:Thiol-ene click reaction was successfully employed for chemical modification of graphene oxide (GO) by one-step synthesis. Herein, 2,2-azobis(2-methylpropionitrile) (AIBN) was used as thermal catalyst and cysteamine hydrochloride (HS-(CH2 )2 -NH2 HCl) was used as thiol-containing compound, which is incorporated to GO surface upon reaction with the C=C bonds. The hydrochloride acts as protecting group for the amine, which is finally eliminated by adding sodium hydroxide. The modified GO contains both S- and N-containing groups (NS-GO). We found that NS-GO sheets form good dispersion in water, ethanol, and ethylene glycol. These graphene dispersions can be processed into functionalized graphene film. Besides, it was demonstrated that NS-GO was proved to be an excellent host matrix for platinum nanoparticles. The developed method paves a new way for graphene modification and its functional nanocomposites.
