The attachment of a variety of <i>Lactobacilli</i> to the mucosal surfaces is accomplished through the interaction of OppA, a superficial bacterial protein also involved in oligopeptide internalization, and the glycosaminoglycan moiety of the proteoglycans that form the epithelial cell glycocalyx.
