Spatiotemporal characteristics and driving forces of construction land expansion in Yangtze River economic belt, China.

ABSTRACT: With rapid economic and population growth, construction land expansion in Yangtze River economic belt in China becomes substantial, carrying significant social and economic implications. This research uses Expansion Speed Index and Expansion Intensity Index to examine spatiotemporal characteristics of construction land expansion in the Yangtze River economic belt from 2000 to 2017. Based on a STIRPAT model, driving forces of construction land expansion are measured by Principal Component Analysis and Ordinary Least Square regression. The results show that: (1) there is a clear expansion pattern regarding the time sequence in provinces/cities of the Yangtze River economic belt, with rapid expansion in the initial stage, moderate expansion in the middle stage and rapid expansion in the later stage. (2) Spatial analysis demonstrates first expansion in the lower reaches in the early stage, rapid expansion of the upper reaches in the middle and later stage, and steady expansion of the middle reaches throughout the research period. (3)There are statistical significant correlations between construction land expansion and GDP, social fixed asset investments, population at the end of the year, population urbanization rate, per capita road area, and number of scientific and technological professionals as well as secondary and tertiary industry values. Of these factors, GDP, social fixed asset investments, population urbanization rate and second industry value are important common driving forces of construction land expansion in this region. The research findings have significant policy implications particularly on coordinated development of urban agglomerations and sustainable industry upgrading when construction land expansion is concerned.

Project description:The income imbalance between urban and rural areas has seriously affected social fairness and justice and has become a key factor restricting the sustainable development of the economy and society. The analysis of the spatiotemporal laws and causes of urban-rural income disparity is of great significance to realizing the coordinated and integrated development of regional urban and rural areas. In this study, the coefficient of variation, Theil decomposition index, spatial autocorrelation method and GeoDetector model were used to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of the urban-rural income gap and its driving force in the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2000 to 2017. The results show that the per capita disposable income of urban and rural residents in the study area shows a trend of rapid growth from 2000 to 2017. The urban-rural income gap in the study area showed an inverted "U"-shaped development process as a whole, and the relative difference showed an increasing trend. Regarding the spatial pattern, the study area showed a significant east-west differentiation pattern. The spatial distribution of the urban-rural income gap in the study area has an obvious positive spatial correlation, that is, the phenomena of high-value agglomeration and low-value agglomeration were significant. The economic development level, the industrial structure, the regional development policy, transportation, topographical conditions and resource endowments can strongly explain the spatial differentiation pattern of the urban-rural income gap in the study area. The spatial differentiation pattern of the urban-rural income gap is affected by both natural factors and socioeconomic factors. Among them, socioeconomic factors are the dominant factors, followed by natural factors. There is a significant interaction between natural factors and socio-economic factors, and the combination of socio-economic factors and adverse natural factors can significantly affect the regional urban-rural income gap.

Project description:It is important to determine long-term changes in vegetation cover, and the associated driving forces, to better understand the natural and human-induced factors affecting vegetation growth. We calculated the fractional vegetation coverage (FVC) of the Urumqi River basin and selected seven natural factors (the clay and sand contents of surface soils, elevation, aspect, slope, precipitation and temperature) and one human factor (land use type). We then used the Sen-Man-Kendall method to calculate the changing trend of the FVC from 2000 to 2020. We used the optimal parameters-based geographical detector (OPGD) model to quantitatively analyze the influence of each factor on the change in vegetation coverage in the basin. The FVC of the Urumqi River basin fluctuated from 2000 to 2020, with average values between 0.22 and 0.33. The areas with no and low vegetation coverage accounted for two-thirds of the total area, whereas the areas with a medium, medium-high and high FVC accounted for one-third of the total area. The upper reaches of the river basin are glacial and forest areas with no vegetation coverage and a high FVC. The middle reaches are concentrated in areas of urban construction with a medium FVC. The lower reaches are in unstable farmland with a medium and high FVC and deserts with a low FVC and no vegetation. From the perspective of the change trend, the areas with an improved FVC accounted for 62.54% of the basin, stable areas accounted for 5.66% and degraded areas accounted for 31.8%. The FVC showed an increasing trend in the study area. The improvement was mainly in the areas of urban construction and desert. Degradation occurred in the high-elevation areas, whereas the transitional zone was unchanged. The analysis of driving forces showed that the human factor explained more of the changes in the FVC than the natural factors in the order: land use type (0.244) > temperature (0.216) > elevation (0.205) > soil clay content (0.172) > precipitation (0.163) > soil sand content (0.138) > slope (0.059) > aspect (0.014). Apart from aspect, the explanatory power (Q value) of the interaction of each factor was higher than that of the single factor. Risk detection showed that each factor had an interval in which the change in the FVC was inhibited or promoted. The optimum elevation interval of the study area was 1300-2700 m and the greatest inhibition of the FVC was seen above 3540 m. Too much or too little precipitation inhibited vegetation coverage.

Project description:China became the country with the largest global carbon emissions in 2007. Cities are regional population and economic centers and are the main sources of carbon emissions. However, factors influencing carbon emissions from cities can vary with geographic location and the development history of the cities, rendering it difficult to explicitly quantify the influence of individual factors on carbon emissions. In this study, random forest (RF) machine learning algorithms were applied to analyze the relationships between factors and carbon emissions in cities using real-world data from Chinese cities. Seventy-three cities in three urban agglomerations within the Yangtze River Economic Belt were evaluated with respect to urban carbon emissions using data from regional energy balance tables for the years 2000, 2007, 2012, and 2017. The RF algorithm was then used to select 16 prototypical cities based on 10 influencing factors that affect urban carbon emissions while considering five primary factors: population, industry, technology levels, consumption, and openness to the outside world. Subsequently, 18 consecutive years of data from 2000 to 2017 were used to construct RFs to investigate the temporal predictability of carbon emission variation in the 16 cities based on regional differences. Results indicated that the RF approach is a practical tool to study the connection between various influencing factors and carbon emissions in the Yangtze River Economic Belt from different perspectives. Furthermore, regional differences among the primary carbon emission influencing factors for each city were clearly observed and were related to urban population characteristics, urbanization level, industrial structures, and degree of openness to the outside world. These factors variably affected different cities, but the results indicate that regional emission reductions have achieved positive results, with overall simulation trends shifting from underestimation to overestimation of emissions.
