Raman Spectroscopy Study on Chemical Transformations of Propane at High Temperatures and High Pressures.

ABSTRACT: This study is devoted to the detailed in situ Raman spectroscopy investigation of propane C₃H₈ in laser-heated diamond anvil cells in the range of pressures from 3 to 22?GPa and temperatures from 900 to 3000?K. We show that propane, while being exposed to particular thermobaric conditions, could react, leading to the formation of hydrocarbons, both saturated and unsaturated as well as soot. Our results suggest that propane could be a precursor of heavy hydrocarbons and will produce more than just sooty material when subjected to extreme conditions. These results could clarify the issue of the presence of heavy hydrocarbons in the Earth's upper mantle.

Spectrally Resolved Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Imaging Reveals Plasmon-Mediated Chemical Transformations.

Project description:Challenges investigating molecules on plasmonic nanostructures have limited understanding of these interactions. However, the chemically specific information in the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectrum can identify perturbations in the adsorbed molecules to provide insight relevant to applications in sensing, catalysis, and energy conversion. Here, we demonstrate spectrally resolved SERS imaging, to simultaneously image and collect the SERS spectra from molecules adsorbed on individual nanoparticles. We observe intensity and frequency fluctuations in the SERS signal on the time scale of tens of milliseconds from n-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) adsorbed to gold nanoparticles. The SERS signal fluctuations correlate with density functional theory calculations of radicals generated by the interaction between MBA and plasmon-generated hot electrons. Applying localization microscopy to the data provides a super-resolution spectrally resolved map that indicates the plasmonic-induced molecular charging occurs on the extremities of the nanoparticles, where the localized electromagnetic field is reported to be most intense.

In-situ plasmon-driven chemical reactions revealed by high vacuum tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Project description:With strong surface plasmons excited at the metallic tip, tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) has both high spectroscopic sensitivity and high spatial resolution, and is becoming an essential tool for chemical analysis. It is a great challenge to combine TERS with a high vacuum system due to the poor optical collection efficiency. We used our innovatively designed home-built high vacuum TERS (HV-TERS) to investigate the plasmon-driven in-situ chemical reaction of 4-nitrobenzenethiol dimerizing to dimercaptoazobenzene. The chemical reactions can be controlled by the plasmon intensity, which in turn can be controlled by the incident laser intensity, tunneling current and bias voltage. The temperature of such a chemical reaction can also be obtained by the clearly observed Stokes and Anti-Stokes HV-TERS peaks. Our findings offer a new way to design a highly efficient HV-TERS system and its applications to chemical catalysis and synthesis of molecules, and significantly extend the studies of chemical reactions.

High spectral specificity of local chemical components characterization with multichannel shift-excitation Raman spectroscopy.

Project description:Raman spectroscopy has emerged as a promising tool for its noninvasive and nondestructive characterization of local chemical structures. However, spectrally overlapping components prevent the specific identification of hyperfine molecular information of different substances, because of limitations in the spectral resolving power. The challenge is to find a way of preserving scattered photons and retrieving hidden/buried Raman signatures to take full advantage of its chemical specificity. Here, we demonstrate a multichannel acquisition framework based on shift-excitation and slit-modulation, followed by mathematical post-processing, which enables a significant improvement in the spectral specificity of Raman characterization. The present technique, termed shift-excitation blind super-resolution Raman spectroscopy (SEBSR), uses multiple degraded spectra to beat the dispersion-loss trade-off and facilitate high-resolution applications. It overcomes a fundamental problem that has previously plagued high-resolution Raman spectroscopy: fine spectral resolution requires large dispersion, which is accompanied by extreme optical loss. Applicability is demonstrated by the perfect recovery of fine structure of the C-Cl bending mode as well as the clear discrimination of different polymorphs of mannitol. Due to its enhanced discrimination capability, this method offers a feasible route at encouraging a broader range of applications in analytical chemistry, materials and biomedicine.

Structural complexity of simple Fe2O3 at high pressures and temperatures.

Project description:Although chemically very simple, Fe2O3 is known to undergo a series of enigmatic structural, electronic and magnetic transformations at high pressures and high temperatures. So far, these transformations have neither been correctly described nor understood because of the lack of structural data. Here we report a systematic investigation of the behaviour of Fe2O3 at pressures over 100?GPa and temperatures above 2,500?K employing single crystal X-ray diffraction and synchrotron Mössbauer source spectroscopy. Crystal chemical analysis of structures presented here and known Fe(II, III) oxides shows their fundamental relationships and that they can be described by the homologous series nFeO·mFe2O3. Decomposition of Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 observed at pressures above 60?GPa and temperatures of 2,000?K leads to crystallization of unusual Fe5O7 and Fe25O32 phases with release of oxygen. Our findings suggest that mixed-valence iron oxides may play a significant role in oxygen cycling between earth reservoirs.

Phase Transition of Ice at High Pressures and Low Temperatures.

Project description:The behavior of ice under extreme conditions undergoes the change of intermolecular binding patterns and leads to the structural phase transitions, which are needed for modeling the convection and internal structure of the giant planets and moons of the solar system as well as H2O-rich exoplanets. Such extreme conditions limit the structural explorations in laboratory but open a door for the theoretical study. The ice phases IX and XIII are located in the high pressure and low temperature region of the phase diagram. However, to the best of our knowledge, the phase transition boundary between these two phases is still not clear. In this work, based on the second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation (MP2) theory, we theoretically investigate the ice phases IX and XIII and predict their structures, vibrational spectra and Gibbs free energies at various extreme conditions, and for the first time confirm that the phase transition from ice IX to XIII can occur around 0.30 GPa and 154 K. The proposed work, taking into account the many-body electrostatic effect and the dispersion interactions from the first principles, opens up the possibility of completing the ice phase diagram and provides an efficient method to explore new phases of molecular crystals.

Approximate chemical analysis of volcanic glasses using Raman spectroscopy.

Project description:The effect of chemical composition on the Raman spectra of a series of natural calcalkaline silicate glasses has been quantified by performing electron microprobe analyses and obtaining Raman spectra on glassy filaments (~450 µm) derived from a magma mingling experiment. The results provide a robust compositionally-dependent database for the Raman spectra of natural silicate glasses along the calcalkaline series. An empirical model based on both the acquired Raman spectra and an ideal mixing equation between calcalkaline basaltic and rhyolitic end-members is constructed enabling the estimation of the chemical composition and degree of polymerization of silicate glasses using Raman spectra. The model is relatively insensitive to acquisition conditions and has been validated using the MPI-DING geochemical standard glasses1 as well as further samples. The methods and model developed here offer several advantages compared with other analytical and spectroscopic methods such as infrared spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, electron and ion microprobe analyses, inasmuch as Raman spectroscopy can be performed with a high spatial resolution (1 µm2) without the need for any sample preparation as a nondestructive technique. This study represents an advance in efforts to provide the first database of Raman spectra for natural silicate glasses and yields a new approach for the treatment of Raman spectra, which allows us to extract approximate information about the chemical composition of natural silicate glasses using Raman spectroscopy. We anticipate its application in handheld in situ terrestrial field studies of silicate glasses under extreme conditions (e.g. extraterrestrial and submarine environments).

Understanding the Chemical Mechanism behind Photoinduced Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy.

Project description:Photoinduced enhanced Raman spectroscopy (PIERS) is a new surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) modality with a 680% Raman signal enhancement of adsorbed analytes over that of SERS. Despite the explosion in recent demonstrations, the PIERS mechanism remains undetermined. Using X-ray and time-resolved optical spectroscopies, electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and density functional theory simulations, we elucidate the atomic-scale mechanism behind PIERS. Stable PIERS substrates were fabricated using self-organized arrays of TiO2 nanotubes with controlled oxygen vacancy doping and size-controlled silver nanoparticles. The key source of PIERS vs SERS enhancement is an increase in the Raman polarizability of the adsorbed analyte upon photoinduced charge transfer. A balance between improved crystallinity, which enhances charge transfer due to higher electron mobility but decreases light absorption, and increased oxygen vacancy defect concentration, which increases light absorption, is critical. This work enables the rational design of PIERS substrates for sensing.

Parallelized Raman Difference Spectroscopy for the Investigation of Chemical Interactions.

Project description:Raman spectroscopy provides an extremely high chemical selectivity. Raman difference spectroscopy is a technique to reveal even the smallest differences that occur due to weak interactions between substances and changes in the molecular structure. To enable parallelized and highly sensitive Raman difference spectroscopy in a microtiter-array, a diffractive optical element, a lens array, and a fiber bundle were integrated into a Raman spectroscopy setup in a unique fashion. The setup was evaluated with a microtiter-array containing pyridine-water complexes, and subwavenumber changes below the spectrometer's resolution could be resolved. The spectral changes were emphasized with two-dimensional correlation analysis. Density functional theory calculation and "atoms in molecule" analysis were performed to simulate the intermolecular long-range interactions between water and pyridine molecules and to get insight into the involved noncovalent interactions, respectively. It was found that by the addition of pyridine, the energy portion of hydrogen bonds to the total complexation energy between pyridine and water reduces. These results demonstrate the unique abilities of the new setup to investigate subtle changes due to biochemically important molecular interactions and opens new avenues to perform drug binding assays and to monitor highly parallelized chemical reactions.

High temperatures and human pressures interact to influence mortality in an African carnivore.

Project description:The impacts of high ambient temperatures on mortality in humans and domestic animals are well-understood. However much less is known about how hot weather affects mortality in wild animals. High ambient temperatures have been associated with African wild dog Lycaon pictus pup mortality, suggesting that high temperatures might also be linked to high adult mortality.We analyzed mortality patterns in African wild dogs radio-collared in Kenya (0°N), Botswana (20°S), and Zimbabwe (20°S), to examine whether ambient temperature was associated with adult mortality.We found that high ambient temperatures were associated with increased adult wild dog mortality at the Kenya site, and there was some evidence for temperature associations with mortality at the Botswana and Zimbabwe sites.At the Kenya study site, which had the highest human impact, high ambient temperatures were associated with increased risks of wild dogs being killed by people, and by domestic dog diseases. In contrast, temperature was not associated with the risk of snare-related mortality at the Zimbabwe site, which had the second-highest human impact. Causes of death varied markedly between sites.Pack size was positively associated with survival at all three sites.These findings suggest that while climate change may not lead to new causes of mortality, rising temperatures may exacerbate existing anthropogenic threats to this endangered species, with implications for conservation. This evidence suggests that temperature-related mortality, including interactions between temperature and other anthropogenic threats, should be investigated in a greater number of species to understand and mitigate likely impacts of climate change. .

1H NMR spectroscopy quantifies visibility of lipoproteins, subclasses, and lipids at varied temperatures and pressures.

Project description:NMR-based quantification of human lipoprotein (sub)classes is a powerful high-throughput method for medical diagnostics. We evaluated select proton NMR signals of serum lipoproteins for elucidating the physicochemical features and the absolute NMR visibility of their lipids. We separated human lipoproteins of different subclasses by ultracentrifugation and analyzed them by 1H NMR spectroscopy at different temperatures (283-323 K) and pressures (0.1-200 MPa). In parallel, we determined the total lipid content by extraction with chloroform/methanol. The visibility of different lipids in the 1H NMR spectra strongly depends on temperature and pressure: it increases with increasing temperatures but decreases with increasing pressures. Even at 313 K, only part of the lipoprotein is detected quantitatively. In LDL and in HDL subclasses HDL2 and HDL3, only 39%, 62%, and 90% of the total cholesterol and only 73%, 70%, and 87% of the FAs are detected, respectively. The choline head groups show visibilities of 43%, 75%, and 87% for LDL, HDL2, and HDL3, respectively. The description of the NMR visibility of lipid signals requires a minimum model of three different compartments, A, B, and C. The thermodynamic analysis of compartment B leads to melting temperatures between 282 K and 308 K and to enthalpy differences that vary for the different lipoproteins as well as for the reporter groups selected. In summary, we describe differences in NMR visibility of lipoproteins and variations in biophysical responses of functional groups that are crucial for the accuracy of absolute NMR quantification.
