Synthesis and crystal structure of a mixed alkaline-earth powellite, Ca0.84Sr0.16MoO4.

ABSTRACT: A mixed alkaline-earth powellite, Ca0.84Sr0.16MoO4 (calcium strontium molybdate), was synthesized by a flux method and its crystal structure was solved using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) data. The compound crystallized in the I41/a space group as with a typical CaMoO4 powellite, but with larger unit-cell parameters and unit-cell volume as a result of the partial incorporation of larger Sr cations into the Ca sites within the crystal. The unit cell and volume were well fitted with the trendline calculated from literature values, and the powder X-ray diffraction (P-XRD) pattern of the ground crystal is in good agreement with the calculated pattern from the solved structure.

Multiple reaction pathway on alkaline earth imide supported catalysts for efficient ammonia synthesis.

Project description:The tunability of reaction pathways is required for exploring efficient and low cost catalysts for ammonia synthesis. There is an obstacle by the limitations arising from scaling relation for this purpose. Here, we demonstrate that the alkali earth imides (AeNH) combined with transition metal (TM = Fe, Co and Ni) catalysts can overcome this difficulty by utilizing functionalities arising from concerted role of active defects on the support surface and loaded transition metals. These catalysts enable ammonia production through multiple reaction pathways. The reaction rate of Co/SrNH is as high as 1686.7 mmol·gCo-1·h-1 and the TOFs reaches above 500 h-1 at 400 °C and 0.9 MPa, outperforming other reported Co-based catalysts as well as the benchmark Cs-Ru/MgO catalyst and industrial wüstite-based Fe catalyst under the same reaction conditions. Experimental and theoretical results show that the synergistic effect of nitrogen affinity of 3d TMs and in-situ formed NH2- vacancy of alkali earth imides regulate the reaction pathways of the ammonia production, resulting in distinct catalytic performance different from 3d TMs. It was thus demonstrated that the appropriate combination of metal and support is essential for controlling the reaction pathway and realizing highly active and low cost catalysts for ammonia synthesis.

Engineering Bright and Mechanosensitive Alkaline-Earth Rare-Earth Upconverting Nanoparticles.

Project description:Upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) are an emerging platform for mechanical force sensing at the nanometer scale. An outstanding challenge in realizing nanometer-scale mechano-sensitive UCNPs is maintaining a high mechanical force responsivity in conjunction with bright optical emission. This Letter reports mechano-sensing UCNPs based on the lanthanide dopants Yb3+ and Er3+, which exhibit a strong ratiometric change in emission spectra and bright emission under applied pressure. We synthesize and analyze the pressure response of five different types of nanoparticles, including cubic NaYF4 host nanoparticles and alkaline-earth host materials CaLuF, SrLuF, SrYbF, and BaLuF, all with lengths of 15 nm or less. By combining optical spectroscopy in a diamond anvil cell with single-particle brightness, we determine the noise equivalent sensitivity (GPa/√Hz) of these particles. The SrYb0.72Er0.28F@SrLuF particles exhibit an optimum noise equivalent sensitivity of 0.26 ± 0.04 GPa/√Hz. These particles present the possibility of robust nanometer-scale mechano-sensing.

Metal-metal bonded alkaline-earth distannyls.

Project description:The first families of alkaline-earth stannylides [Ae(SnPh3)2·(thf) x ] (Ae = Ca, x = 3, 1; Sr, x = 3, 2; Ba, x = 4, 3) and [Ae{Sn(SiMe3)3}2·(thf) x ] (Ae = Ca, x = 4, 4; Sr, x = 4, 5; Ba, x = 4, 6), where Ae is a large alkaline earth with direct Ae-Sn bonds, are presented. All complexes have been characterised by high-resolution solution NMR spectroscopy, including 119Sn NMR, and by X-ray diffraction crystallography. The molecular structures of [Ca(SnPh3)2·(thf)4] (1'), [Sr(SnPh3)2·(thf)4] (2'), [Ba(SnPh3)2·(thf)5] (3'), 4, 5 and [Ba{Sn(SiMe3)3}2·(thf)5] (6'), most of which crystallised as higher thf solvates than their parents 1-6, were established by XRD analysis; the experimentally determined Sn-Ae-Sn' angles lie in the range 158.10(3)-179.33(4)°. In a given series, the 119Sn NMR chemical shifts are slightly deshielded upon descending group 2 from Ca to Ba, while the silyl-substituted stannyls are much more shielded than the phenyl ones (δ 119Sn/ppm: 1', -133.4; 2', -123.6; 3', -95.5; 4, -856.8; 5, -848.2; 6', -792.7). The bonding and electronic properties of these complexes were also analysed by DFT calculations. The combined spectroscopic, crystallographic and computational analysis of these complexes provide some insight into the main features of these unique families of homoleptic complexes. A comprehensive DFT study (Wiberg bond index, QTAIM and energy decomposition analysis) points at a primarily ionic Ae-Sn bonding, with a small covalent contribution, in these series of complexes; the Sn-Ae-Sn' angle is associated with a flat energy potential surface around its minimum, consistent with the broad range of values determined by experimental and computational methods.

Emerging superconductivity rules in rare-earth and alkaline-earth metal hydrides.

Project description:Hydrides of alkaline-earth and rare-earth metals have garnered significant interest in high-temperature superconductor research due to their excellent electron-phonon coupling and high T c upon pressurization. This study explores the electronic structures and electron-phonon coupling of metal hydrides XHn (n = 4,6), where X includes Ca, Mg, Sc, and Y. The involvement of d-orbital electrons alters the Fermi surface, leading to saddle-point nesting and a charge density wave (CDW) phase transition, which opens the superconducting gap. For instance, in YH6, the exchange coupling between Y-4d and H-1s holes in the phonon softening region results in T c values up to 230 K. The study suggests that factors, such as the origin of the CDW order, hydrogen concentration, and d-orbital contributions are crucial to superconductivity. This work proposes a new rule for high T c superconductors, emphasizing the importance of double gaps and electron-phonon interactions at exchange coupling sites, and predicts potential high-quality superconductors among rare-earth hydrides.

Crystal structures of two alkaline earth (M = Ba and Sr) dimanganese(II) iron(III) tris-(orthophosphates).

Project description:Two new orthophosphates, BaMn2Fe(PO4)3 [barium dimanganese(II) iron(III) tris-(orthophosphate)] and SrMn2Fe(PO4)3 [strontium dimanganese(II) iron(III) tris-(orthophosphate)], were synthesized by solid-state reactions. They are isotypic and crystallize in the ortho-rhom-bic system with space group type Pbcn. Their crystal structures comprise infinite zigzag chains of edge-sharing FeO6 octa-hedra (point group symmetry .2.) and Mn2O10 double octa-hedra running parallel to [001], linked by two types of PO4 tetra-hedra. The so-formed three-dimensional framework delineates channels running along [001], in which the alkaline earth cations (site symmetry .2.) are located within a neighbourhood of eight O atoms.

The Exchange Mechanism of Alkaline and Alkaline-Earth Ions in Zeolite N.

Project description:Zeolite N is a synthetic zeolite of the EDI framework family from the more than 200 known zeolite types. Previous experimental laboratory and field data show that zeolite N has a high capacity for exchange of ions. Computational modelling and simulation techniques are effective tools that help explain the atomic-scale behaviour of zeolites under different processing conditions and allow comparison with experiment. In this study, the ion exchange behaviour of synthetic zeolite N in an aqueous environment is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The exchange mechanism of K+ extra-framework cations with alkaline and alkaline-earth cations NH4+, Li+, Na+, Rb+, Cs+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ is explored in different crystallographic directions inside the zeolite N structure. Moreover, the effect of different framework partial charges on MD simulation results obtained from different DFT calculations are examined. The results show that the diffusion and exchange of cations in zeolite N are affected by shape and size of channels controlling the ion exchange flow as well as the nature of cation, ionic size and charge density.

Alkaline and Alkaline-earth Cyanoacetylides: A Combined Theoretical and Rotational Spectroscopic Investigation.

Project description:The metallic cyanoacetylides LiC3N, NaC3N, MgC3N and CaC3N have been investigated by combined spectroscopy measurements and theoretical calculations. The theoretical calculations predict for the four species that the linear isomer with formula MCCCN (M= Li, Na, Mg and Ca) is the most stable one. We used the laser ablation molecular beam Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy to synthesize these species by the reaction of metal vapors, produced by laser ablation, and the 3-bromo-2-propynenitrile (BrCCCN). The pure rotational spectra were observed by Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in the 2-18 GHz frequency region only for LiCCCN and NaCCCN, while no spectral signatures for MgCCCN and CaCCCN could be detected. Finally, we have searched for LiCCCN and NaCCCN species towards the carbon-rich evolved star IRC + 10216 but only upper limits to their abundances have been obtained.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Magnetic Properties of a New Mixed Metal (Co(II), Ni(II)) Cubane.

Project description:The mixed Co(II)/Ni(II) complex, [Co2.67Ni1.33L₄(CH₃COO)₂][BPh₄]₂·0.75H₂O where HL = 4-(salicylaldimine)antipyrine, was isolated as an orange solid from the reaction of 4-(salicylaldimine)antipyrine, with mixed cobalt(II) acetate and nickel(II) acetate in ethanol. The complex was characterized by Frustrated Total Internal Reflection (FTIR), UltraViolet Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-ray single crystal diffraction, and by elemental analysis. The complex is composed of two symmetry independent cationic units, A and B. The two units are essentially isostructural; nevertheless, small differences exist between them. The units contain four metal atoms, arranged at the corners of a distorted cubane-like core alternately with phenoxy oxygen of the Schiff base. The overall eight corners occupied by metal ions in the asymmetric unit are shared between cobalt and nickel in a 5.33:2.67 ratio. Each metal divalent cation binds three coordinated sites from the corresponding tridentate Schiff base ligand, the fourth one is bound by the acetate oxygen, the fifth and the sixth donor sites come from the phenolate oxygens of other Schiff base ligands. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds join the complexes to the water molecules present in the crystal packing. The magnetic characterization was carried out for this new complex and for its isostructural counterpart containing only cobalt ions. The magnetic measurements for the cobalt(II)/nickel(II) mixed compound indicate either antiferromagnetic interactions among the two cubanes or an anisotropic contribution, whereas a ferromagnetic interaction is observed within the cubane, for both the complexes, as expected by geometrical considerations. A comparison between the magnetic properties of the pure cobalt(II) derivative and similar systems discussed in literature, is presented.

Alkaline-Earth Metal Mediated Benzene-to-Biphenyl Coupling.

Project description:Complex [(DIPeP BDI)Ca]2 (C6 H6 ), with a C6 H6 2- dianion bridging two Ca2+ ions, reacts with benzene to yield [(DIPeP BDI)Ca]2 (biphenyl) with a bridging biphenyl2- dianion (DIPeP BDI=HC[C(Me)N-DIPeP]2 ; DIPeP=2,6-CH(Et)2 -phenyl). The biphenyl complex was also prepared by reacting [(DIPeP BDI)Ca]2 (C6 H6 ) with biphenyl or by reduction of [(DIPeP BDI)CaI]2 with KC8 in presence of biphenyl. Benzene-benzene coupling was also observed when the deep purple product of ball-milling [(DIPP BDI)CaI(THF)]2 with K/KI was extracted with benzene (DIPP=2,6-CH(Me)2 -phenyl) giving crystalline [(DIPP BDI)Ca(THF)]2 (biphenyl) (52 % yield). Reduction of [(DIPeP BDI)SrI]2 with KC8 gave highly labile [(DIPeP BDI)Sr]2 (C6 H6 ) as a black powder (61 % yield) which reacts rapidly and selectively with benzene to [(DIPeP BDI)Sr]2 (biphenyl). DFT calculations show that the most likely route for biphenyl formation is a pathway in which the C6 H6 2- dianion attacks neutral benzene. This is facilitated by metal-benzene coordination.

Alkaline-Earth-Catalyzed Dehydrocoupling of Amines and Boranes.

Project description:Dehydrocoupling reactions between the boranes HBpin and 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane and a range of amines and anilines ensue under very mild reaction conditions in the presence of a simple β-diketiminato magnesium n-butyl precatalyst. The facility of the reactions is suggested to be a function of the Lewis acidity of the borane substrate, and is dictated by resultant pre-equilibria between, and the relative stability of, magnesium hydride and borohydride intermediates during the course of the catalysis.
