Role of Nitrogen on the Porosity, Surface, and Electrochemical Characteristics of Activated Carbon.

ABSTRACT: Surface functionalities of activated carbon can be affected by the presence of heteroatoms such as oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen. In this work, nitrogen-doped activated carbons (NACs) were prepared from shrimp shells, and the effects of the mixing ratio (raw material to an activating agent) on the porous texture and surface functionalities were investigated. It was found that, with increasing the mixing ratio (resulting in increasing N/C), the development of mesoporosity was significantly observed. This led to decreasing microporosity and specific surface areas (SSAs). The obtained NACs exhibited nitrogen functionalities in the forms of pyridinic and pyrrolic groups. It was found that although the pyridinic-N has a detrimental effect on the SSA, it does favor the pseudocapacitance, leading to an enhancement in the ion storage capability regardless of the low SSA.

Electrochemical performance of activated carbon fiber with hydrogen bond-induced high sulfur/nitrogen doping.

Project description:The sulfur/nitrogen co-doped activated carbon fiber (S/N-ACF) is prepared by the thermal treatment of thiourea-bonded hydroxyl-rich carbon fiber, which can bond the decomposition products of thiourea through hydrogen bond interaction to avoid the significant loss of sulfur and nitrogen sources during the thermal treatment process. The sulfur/nitrogen co-doped carbon fiber (S/N-CF) is prepared by the thermal treatment of thiourea-adsorbed carbon fiber. The doping degree of the carbon fiber is improved by reasonable strategy. S/N-ACF shows a higher amount of S/N doping (4.56 at% N and 3.16 at% S) than S/N-CF (1.25 at% N and 0.61 at% S). S/N-ACF with high S/N doping level involves highly active sites to improve the capacitive performance, and high delocalization electron to improve the conductivity and rate capability when compared with the normal S/N co-doped carbon fiber (S/N-CF). Accordingly, the specific capacitance increases from 1196 mF cm-2 for S/N-CF to 2704 mF cm-2 for S/N-ACF at 1 mA cm-2. The all-solid-state flexible S/N-ACF supercapacitor achieves 184.7 μW h cm-2 at 350 μW cm-2. The results suggest that S/N-ACF has potential application as a CF-based supercapacitor electrode material.

The impact of nitrogen oxides on electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction.

Project description:The electroreduction of carbon dioxide offers a promising avenue to produce valuable fuels and chemicals using greenhouse gas carbon dioxide as the carbon feedstock. Because industrial carbon dioxide point sources often contain numerous contaminants, such as nitrogen oxides, understanding the potential impact of contaminants on carbon dioxide electrolysis is crucial for practical applications. Herein, we investigate the impact of various nitrogen oxides, including nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and nitrous oxide, on carbon dioxide electroreduction on three model electrocatalysts (i.e., copper, silver, and tin). We demonstrate that the presence of nitrogen oxides (up to 0.83%) in the carbon dioxide feed leads to a considerable Faradaic efficiency loss in carbon dioxide electroreduction, which is caused by the preferential electroreduction of nitrogen oxides over carbon dioxide. The primary products of nitrogen oxides electroreduction include nitrous oxide, nitrogen, hydroxylamine, and ammonia. Despite the loss in Faradaic efficiency, the electrocatalysts exhibit similar carbon dioxide reduction performances once a pure carbon dioxide feed is restored, indicating a negligible long-term impact of nitrogen oxides on the catalytic properties of the model catalysts.

"Self-cleaning" electrochemical regeneration of dye-loaded activated carbon.

Project description:A low maintenance, "self-cleaning" electrochemical approach is evaluated for regeneration of dye-loaded granular activated carbon (GAC). To do so, batch experiments were conducted using a low-cost granular activated carbon/stainless steel mesh (GACSS) composite cathode and a stable Ti/mixed metal oxides (Ti/MMO) anode without the addition of oxidants or iron catalysts. The GACSS cathode supports simultaneous H2O2 electrogeneration via the in situ supplied O2 from Ti/MMO anode and the subsequent H2O2 activation for ·OH generation, thus enabling the cracking of dye molecules adsorbed on GAC and regenerating the GAC's sorption capacity. Results show that a prolonged electrochemical processing for 12h will achieve up to 88.7% regeneration efficiency (RE). While RE decreases with multi-cycle application, up to 52.3% could still be achieved after 10 adsorption-regeneration cycles. To identify the mechanism, experiments were conducted to measure H2O2 electrogeneration, H2O2 activation, and ·OH generation by various GAC samples. The dye-loaded GAC and GAC treated after 10 adsorption-regeneration cycles were still capable of ·OH generation, which contributes to effective "self-cleaning" and regeneration over multi-cycles.

Effect of Porosity in Activated Carbon Supports for Silicon-Based Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs).

Project description:Activated carbon supports for Si deposition with different porosities were prepared, and the effect of porosity on the electrochemical characteristics was investigated. The porosity of the support is a key parameter affecting the Si deposition mechanism and the stability of the electrode. In the Si deposition mechanism, as the porosity of activated carbon increases, the effect of particle size reduction due to the uniform dispersion of Si was confirmed. This implies that the porosity of activated carbon can affect the rate performance. However, excessively high porosity reduced the contact area between Si and activated carbon, resulting in poor electrode stability. Therefore, controlling the porosity of activated carbon is essential to improving the electrochemical characteristics.

Bifunctional Nitrogen and Cobalt Codoped Hollow Carbon for Electrochemical Syngas Production.

Project description:Electrochemical conversion of CO2 and H2O into syngas is an attractive route to utilize green electricity. A competitive system economy demands development of cost-effective electrocatalyst with dual active sites for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, a single atom electrocatalyst derived from a metal-organic framework is proposed, in which Co single atoms and N functional groups function as atomic CO2RR and HER active sites, respectively. The synthesis method is based on pyrolysis of ZnO@ZIF (zeolitic imidazolate framework). The excess in situ Zn evaporation effectively prevents Co single atoms (≈3.4 wt%) from aggregation and maintains appropriate Co/N ratio. The as-prepared electrocatalyst is featured with high graphitic degree of carbon support for rapid electron transport and sponge-like thin carbon shells with hierarchical pore system for facilitating active site exposure and mass transport. Therefore, the electrocatalyst exhibits a nearly 100% Faradic efficiency and a high formation rate of ≈425 mmol g-1 h-1 at 1.0 V with the gaseous product ratio (CO/H2) approximating ideal 1/2. With the assistance of an extensive material characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it is identified that Co single atoms are uniformly coordinated in the form of Co-C2N2 moieties, and act as the major catalytic sites for CO2 reduction.

Optical and electrochemical tuning of hydrothermally synthesized nitrogen-doped carbon dots.

Project description:Carbon dots (CDs) are a rapidly progressing class of nanomaterial which show promise towards applications in solar energy conversion due to their low toxicity, favorable electrochemical properties, and tunability. In recent years there have been a number of reported CD syntheses, both top-down and bottom-up methods, producing a diverse range of CDs with intrinsic properties dependent on the starting materials and utilized dopants. This work presents a citrate buffer-facilitated synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCD) and explores the impact of urea concentration on observed electrochemical and optical properties. Optical absorbance and quantum yield of NCDs were found to increase with the dopant concentrations present in the hydrothermal reaction mixture. Electrochemical analysis demonstrates that increased nitrogen content results in the shifting of carbon dot oxidation potentials without the need of post-synthesis surface modifications. Over the range of molar ratios of dopant-to-citrate tested, the oxidation potentials of NCDs shifted up to 150 mV towards more negative potentials. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms the addition of pyrrolic and pyridinic nitrogen at different levels in different batches of NCDs, which are likely the source of the observed changes.

Enhanced CO₂ Adsorption on Activated Carbon Fibers Grafted with Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanotubes.

Project description:In this paper, multiscale composites formed by grafting N-doped carbon nanotubes (CNs) on the surface of polyamide (PAN)-based activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were investigated and their adsorption performance for CO₂ was determined. The spaghetti-like and randomly oriented CNs were homogeneously grown onto ACFs. The pre-immersion of cobalt(II) ions for ACFs made the CNs grow above with a large pore size distribution, decreased the oxidation resistance, and exhibited different predominant N-functionalities after chemical vapor deposition processes. Specifically, the CNs grafted on ACFs with or without pre-immersion of cobalt(II) ions were characterized by the pyridine-like structures of six-member rings or pyrrolic/amine moieties, respectively. In addition, the loss of microporosity on the specific surface area and pore volume exceeded the gain from the generation of the defects from CNs. The adsorption capacity of CO₂ decreased gradually with increasing temperature, implying that CO₂ adsorption was exothermic. The adsorption capacities of CO₂ at 25 °C and 1 atm were between 1.53 and 1.92 mmol/g and the Freundlich equation fit the adsorption data well. The isosteric enthalpy of adsorption, implying physical adsorption, indicated that the growth of CNTs on the ACFs benefit CO₂ adsorption.

Nitrogen-doped Carbon with Modulated Surface Chemistry and Porous Structure by a Stepwise Biomass Activation Process towards Enhanced Electrochemical Lithium-Ion Storage.

Project description:Controllable conversion of biomass to value-added carbon materials is attractive towards a wide variety of potential applications. Herein, hydrothermal treatment and KOH activation are successively employed to treat the cheap and abundant camellia oleifera shell as a new carbon raw material. It is shown that this stepwise activation process allows the production of porous nitrogen-doped carbon with optimized surface chemistry and porous structure compared to the counterparts prepared by a single activation procedure. Benefiting from the modulated porous structure, the as-produced porous nitrogen-doped carbon electrode delivered a high reversible capacity of 1080 mAh g-1 at a current density of 100 mA g-1, which is 3.3 and 5.8 times as high as that of the carbon materials prepared by bare hydrothermal treatment or KOH activation, respectively. Moreover, the optimized surface composition of the porous nitrogen-doped carbon endows it with a highest initial Coulombic efficiency among the three samples, showing great potentials for practical applications. This work is expected to pave a new avenue to upgrade biomass to carbon materials with tunable surface properties and microstructures for target applications.

Constructing Interfacial Boron-Nitrogen Moieties in Turbostratic Carbon for Electrochemical Hydrogen Peroxide Production.

Project description:The electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) provides a green route for decentralized H2 O2 synthesis, where a structure-selectivity relationship is pivotal for the control of a highly selective and active two-electron pathway. Here, we report the fabrication of a boron and nitrogen co-doped turbostratic carbon catalyst with tunable B-N-C configurations (CNB-ZIL) by the assistance of a zwitterionic liquid (ZIL) for electrochemical hydrogen peroxide production. Combined spectroscopic analysis reveals a fine tailored B-N moiety in CNB-ZIL, where interfacial B-N species in a homogeneous distribution tend to segregate into hexagonal boron nitride domains at higher pyrolysis temperatures. Based on the experimental observations, a correlation between the interfacial B-N moieties and HO2 - selectivity is established. The CNB-ZIL electrocatalysts with optimal interfacial B-N moieties exhibit a high HO2 - selectivity with small overpotentials in alkaline media, giving a HO2 - yield of ≈1787 mmol gcatalyst -1 h-1 at -1.4 V in a flow-cell reactor.

Synergistic effects of nitrogen-doped carbon and praseodymium oxide in electrochemical water splitting.

Project description:Hybrid materials featuring perovskite-type metal oxide in conjunction with heteroatom-doped graphene hold immense promise as alternatives to costly noble metal catalysts for electrochemical water splitting, facilitating the generation of environmentally friendly hydrogen. In this study, perovskite-type oxide containing praseodymium, barium, strontium, cobalt, and iron atoms dispersed in a carbon matrix as a catalyst is synthesized via annealing of the carbon material with substrates for the preparation of perovskite oxide. The mass ratio of reagents regulates the porous structure and elemental composition. The result of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), suggests that the hybrid catalysts exhibit intermediate HER kinetics compared to the commercial Pt/C and the catalyst without carbon. The Tafel slope for HER is lower for materials containing carbon, because of the improved reaction kinetics, facilitated proton transfer, and enhanced electrochemical surface area. Therefore, the study provides an effective strategy for the preparation of catalyst and their use as the active catalyst of water splitting.
