Monitored deformation data during the construction of an urban subway.

ABSTRACT: The dataset is related to the ground surface and structure deformation during the construction of Chongqing subway line 9 in four months. The tunnel was constructed using drilling and blasting method as well as the tunnel boring machine (TBM). A systematic monitoring system was set in the site and it included monitoring points for ground subsidence, building settlement, vault deformation and the tunnel horizontal deformation. The deformation data in this article was measured using surveying in the site and it can be reused to validate numerical simulation results and guide the similar engineering project in the nearby area.

Indoor-air microbiome in an urban subway network: diversity and dynamics.

Project description:Subway systems are indispensable for urban societies, but microbiological characteristics of subway aerosols are relatively unknown. Previous studies investigating microbial compositions in subways employed methodologies that underestimated the diversity of microbial exposure for commuters, with little focus on factors governing subway air microbiology, which may have public health implications. Here, a culture-independent approach unraveling the bacterial diversity within the urban subway network in Hong Kong is presented. Aerosol samples from multiple subway lines and outdoor locations were collected. Targeting the 16S rRNA gene V4 region, extensive taxonomic diversity was found, with the most common bacterial genera in the subway environment among those associated with skin. Overall, subway lines harbored different phylogenetic communities based on α- and β-diversity comparisons, and closer inspection suggests that each community within a line is dependent on architectural characteristics, nearby outdoor microbiomes, and connectedness with other lines. Microbial diversities and assemblages also varied depending on the day sampled, as well as the time of day, and changes in microbial communities between peak and nonpeak commuting hours were attributed largely to increases in skin-associated genera in peak samples. Microbial diversities within the subway were influenced by temperature and relative humidity, while carbon dioxide levels showed a positive correlation with abundances of commuter-associated genera. This Hong Kong data set and communities from previous studies conducted in the United States formed distinct community clusters, indicating that additional work is required to unravel the mechanisms that shape subway microbiomes around the globe.

Study on ground settlement and structural deformation for large span subway station using a new pre-supporting system.

Project description:This study presents a novel construction pre-supporting system for large underground space excavation with shallow depth, Steel Tube Slab system (STS), in which adjacent steel pipes are connected by a couple of flanges, bolts and concrete for flexural capacity and lateral stiffness of the whole structure. The STS method is employed for the first time for the construction of the ultra-shallow buried and large span subway station in China, during which ground settlement and structural deformation are monitored. A numerical model for the subway station is established with reliability verified by monitored data comparison from numerical results and investigation on the effect of large span underground excavation on surrounding soil surrounding soil and existing buildings in soft soils. Unlike traditional methods, the STS method can effectively control and reduce the ground settlement during construction, thereby rendering it ideally suited for application in soft soils.

Safety risk assessment of subway shield construction under-crossing a river using CFA and FER.

Project description:Numerous subway projects are planned by China's city governments, and more subways can hardly avoid under-crossing rivers. While often being located in complex natural and social environments, subway shield construction under-crossing a river (SSCUR) is more susceptible to safety accidents, causing substantial casualties, and monetary losses. Therefore, there is an urgent need to investigate safety risks during SSCUR. The paper identified the safety risks during SSCUR by using a literature review and experts' evaluation, proposed a new safety risk assessment model by integrating confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and fuzzy evidence reasoning (FER), and then selected a project to validate the feasibility of the proposed model. Research results show that (a) a safety risk list of SSCUR was identified, including 5 first-level safety risks and 38 second-level safety risks; (b) the proposed safety risk assessment model can be used to assess the safety risk of SSCUR; (c) safety inspection, safety organization and duty, quicksand layer, and high-pressure phreatic water were the high-level risks, and the onsite total safety risk was at the medium level; (d) management-type safety risks, environment-type safety risks, and personnel-type safety risks have higher expected utility values, and manager-type safety risks were expected have higher risk-utility values when compared to worker-type safety risks. The research can enrich the theoretical knowledge of SSCUR safety risk assessment and provide references to safety managers for conducting scientific and effective safety management on the construction site when a subway crosses under a river.

Project description:Data about system that could be used in urban housing Construction process, renewal and upgrading is presented in this data article. Urban upgrading has been widely recognized as an essential issue in developing sustainable built environment. The aim is to identify the system approach that could be used for renewing and upgrading urban housing generally with view to expanding cities, redevelopment, redesigning and beautification of settlement layout, upgrading of facilities and public goods and services, repair, construction and silting of drainage system. Stratified survey method was used in generating the data, through identifying the current housing system in some selected locations in Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria, examining the factors that affects urban housing renewal and upgrading, identifying and examine the system approaches for urban housing renewal and upgrading and to develop a template for alternative material intervention for urban housing. The data was generated through questionnaire survey of 100 respondents; through Stratified sampling technique. Data collected were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) with Descriptive Statistics such as percentage distribution, charts and relative agreement index for the interpretation of findings. Data was presented on system that could be used in urban construction process, renewal and upgrading as includes: Redevelopment system, Revitalization system, Rehabilitation system, Regeneration system, Integration system, Conservation system and Afforestation system.

Nucleus deformation by microtubules during early steps of hematopoiesis

Project description:Cells from the myeloid and lymphoid lineages fulfill distinct functions with specific shapes and intra-cellular architectures. The role of cytokines in the regulation of HSC differentiation has been intensively studied but our understanding of the potential contribution of inner cell architecture is relatively poor. Here we studied the early commitment of human HSC and identified specific microtubule network rearrangements and nucleus shape changes that accompany cells differentiation toward the myeloid lineage. This work established the role of microtubules in the mechanical regulation of nucleus shape, chromatin architecture and HSC differentiation and open new perspectives in our appreciation of the implication of intra-cellular forces in the early specification of the myeloid lineage.

State transition modeling of complex monitored health data.

Project description:This article considers the analysis of complex monitored health data, where often one or several signals are reflecting the current health status that can be represented by a finite number of states, in addition to a set of covariates. In particular, we consider a novel application of a non-parametric state intensity regression method in order to study time-dependent effects of covariates on the state transition intensities. The method can handle baseline, time varying as well as dynamic covariates. Because of the non-parametric nature, the method can handle different data types and challenges under minimal assumptions. If the signal that is reflecting the current health status is of continuous nature, we propose the application of a weighted median and a hysteresis filter as data pre-processing steps in order to facilitate robust analysis. In intensity regression, covariates can be aggregated by a suitable functional form over a time history window. We propose to study the estimated cumulative regression parameters for different choices of the time history window in order to investigate short- and long-term effects of the given covariates. The proposed framework is discussed and applied to resuscitation data of newborns collected in Tanzania.

A Decision Method for Construction Safety Risk Management Based on Ontology and Improved CBR: Example of a Subway Project.

Project description:Early decision-making and the prevention of construction safety risks are very important for the safety, quality, and cost of construction projects. In the field of construction safety risk management, in the face of a loose, chaotic, and huge information environments, how to design an efficient construction safety risk management decision support method has long been the focus of academic research. An effective approach to safety management is to structuralize safety risk knowledge, then identify and reuse it, and establish a scientific and systematic construction safety risk management decision system. Based on ontology and improved case-based reasoning (CBR) methods, this paper proposes a decision-making approach for construction safety risk management in which the reasoning process is improved by integrating a similarity algorithm and correlation algorithm. Compared to the traditional CBR approach in which only the similarity of information is considered, this method can avoid missing important correlated information by making inferences from multiple sources of information. Finally, the method is applied to the safety risks of subway construction for verification to show that the method is effective and easy to implement.

Crowdsourced cycling data applications to estimate noise pollution exposure during urban cycling.

Project description:This research demonstrates a methodology to integrate freely available datasets to understand the relationship between road traffic noise and cycling experiences in a medium sized city. An illustrative example of the methodology was drawn from data for Dublin, Ireland. We aggregate local environmental data with 81,403 Strava cycle trips, contextualised by feedback from 335 cyclists to estimate exposure levels and infer impacts on experiences and behaviours. Results demonstrate that cyclists recognise that they are subjected to increased noise levels and experience negative psychophysical consequences as a result, but they tend to downplay the impact of noise as merely a minor annoyance. Noise also impacts behaviour, most noticeably through temporal and spatial detours. Geospatial mapping was used to visualise the relationship between noise pollution and cycling activity. Estimating traffic noise levels across two cycle routes, direct vs popular detour, revealed a +10 dB(A) increase in exposure for a saving of approximately 4 min on the direct route compared to the detour. Spatial inequities in exposure levels may have serious health consequences for cyclists in a city such as Dublin. The methodology is demonstrated as suitable for policy level interventions and planning purposes.
