A surprising yet highly practical approach to improve the performance of a TADF exciplex blend is reported. Using the TSBPA donor and PO-T2T acceptor to form an exciplex, we are able to blue shift the emission, increase PLQY from 58 to 80%, and increase the device EQE from 14.8 to 19.2% by simply diluting the exciplex with an inert high triplet energy host material-here either UGH-3 or DPEPO. Project description:Materials showing white light emission have found applications in a variety of solid state devices especially in display technology. For white light emission, doping of red (R), green (G) and blue (B) emitters in a host matrix is commonly practised. However, finding RGB emitters of similar stability with homogenous doping is challenging. Furthermore, such devices suffer from color purity in the long run. Small organic light emitters, capable of colour tuning and having a broad emission spectrum are in high demand as they provide colour stability, reproducibility, a simple device geometry and high efficiency. Recently, it has been shown that the efficiency of OLEDs can be enhanced by employing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. Here, we designed and synthesised a xanthone-carbazole based D-A-D material (Xan-Cbz) for TADF properties. Blue TADF emission, in neat thin films, at 470 nm was observed and further investigated by studying delayed fluorescence and lifetime measurements. In addition, a blend of Xan-Cbz with NPD shows exciplex emission at 525 nm in thin film. OLEDs based on Xan-Cbz were fabricated using several device configurations. OLEDs having the device configuration ITO/PEDOT:PSS/NPD/Xan-Cbz/Bphen/LiF-Al showed a luminance of 1.96 × 104 Cd m-2 (at a current density of 50 mA cm-2) and V ON at ∼6 V. Electroluminescence showed the features of both neat emission (470 nm) of Xan-Cbz and its exciplex (525 nm) with NPD. Further, colour tuning was observed as a function of applied voltage and the ratio of light intensity (I 525/I 470) of neat and exciplex emission was found to decrease with increasing voltage. Greenish-blue emission (CIE coordinates: 0.202, 0.382) from Xan-Cbz OLEDs was obtained. Xan-Cbz showed its neat emission (at 470 nm) in ITO/PEDOT:PSS/CBP/Xan-Cbz/Bphen/LiF-Al and pure exciplex emission (at 525 nm) in ITO/PEDOT:PSS/NPD:Xan-Cbz/Bphen/LiF-Al device configurations. Thus in this article we showed blue TADF emission, exciplex emission and voltage dependent color tuning in OLEDs based on a small organic emitter.

Project description:New Zealand farm working dogs are supreme athletes that are crucial to agriculture in the region. The effects that low or high dietary carbohydrate (CHO) content might have on their interstitial glucose (IG) and activity during work are unknown. The goals of the study were to determine if the concentration of IG and delta-g (a measurement of activity) will be lower in dogs fed an ultra-low CHO high fat diet in comparison to dogs fed a high CHO low fat diet, and to determine if low concentrations of IG are followed by reduced physical activity. We hypothesized that feeding working farm dogs an ultra-low CHO diet would reduce their IG concentrations which in turn would reduce physical activity during work. We prospectively recruited 22 farm dogs from four farms. At each farm, dogs were randomized to one of two diets and had a month of dietary acclimation to their allocated diet. The macronutrient proportions as a percentage of metabolizable energy (%ME) for the high CHO low fat diet (Diet 1) were 23% protein, 25% fat, and 52% CHO, and for the ultra-low CHO high fat diet (Diet 2) 37% protein, 63% fat, and 1% CHO. Following the acclimation period, we continuously monitored IG concentrations with flash glucose monitoring devices, and delta-g using triaxial accelerometers for 96 h. Dogs fed Diet 2 had a lower area under the curve (±SE) for IG (AUC Diet 2 = 497 ± 4 mmol/L/96h, AUC Diet 1 = 590 ± 3 mmol/L/96h; P = 0.002) but a higher area under the curve (±SE) for delta-g (AUC Diet 2 = 104,122 ± 6,045 delta-g/96h, AUC Diet 1 = 80,904 ± 4,950 delta-g/96h; P< 0.001). Interstitial glucose concentrations increased as the activity level increased (P < 0.001) and were lower for Diet 2 within each activity level (P < 0.001). The overall incidence of low IG readings (< 3.5 mmol/L) was 119/3810 (3.12%), of which 110 (92.4%) readings occurred in the Diet 2 group (P = 0.001). In the Diet 2 group, 99/110 (90%) of the low IG events occurred during the resting period (19:00-06:00). We conclude that feeding Diet 2 (ultra-low CHO high fat diet) to working farm dogs was associated with increased delta-g despite decreased IG concentrations. Interstitial glucose concentrations were positively associated with dogs' activity levels independent of diet. Lastly, events of low IG occurred at a low incidence and were predominantly seen between 19:00-06:00 in dogs fed the ultra-low CHO high fat diet.

Project description:Magnetic field effects (MFEs) in thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials have been shown to influence the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) and to impact on electroluminescence (EL) and conductivity. Here, we present a novel model combining Cole-Cole and Lorentzian functions to describe low and high magnetic field effects originating from hyperfine coupling, the Δg mechanism, and triplet processes. We applied this approach to organic light-emitting devices of third generation based on tris(4-carbazoyl-9-ylphenyl)amine (TCTA) and 2,2',2″-(1,3,5-benzinetriyl)-tris(1-phenyl-1-H-benzimidazole) (TPBi), exhibiting blue emission, to unravel their loss mechanisms. The quality of the regression function was evaluated using k-fold cross-validation. The scoring was compared to various alternative fitting functions, which were previously proposed in literature. Density functional theory calculations, photoluminescence, and electroluminescence studies validated the formation of a TADF exciplex system. Furthermore, we propose successful encapsulation using a semi-permeable polymer, showing promising results for magnetic field sensing applications on arbitrary geometry. This study provides insights into the origin of magnetic field effects in exciplex-TADF materials, with potential applications in optoelectronic devices and sensing technologies.

Project description:Development of white organic light-emitting diodes based on purely thermally activated delayed fluorescence with a single-emissive-layer configuration has been a formidable challenge. Here, we report the rational design of a donor-acceptor energy-relaying exciplex and its utility in fabricating single-emissive-layer, thermally activated delayed fluorescence-based white organic light-emitting diodes that exhibit 100% internal quantum efficiency, 108.2 lm W-1 power efficiency, and 32.7% external quantum efficiency. This strategy enables thin-film fabrication of an 8 cm × 8 cm thermally activated delayed fluorescence white organic light-emitting diodes (10 inch2) prototype with 82.7 lm W-1 power efficiency and 25.0% external quantum efficiency. Introduction of a phosphine oxide-based acceptor with a steric group to the exciplex limits donor-acceptor triplet coupling, providing dual levels of high-lying and low-lying triplet energy. Transient spectroscopic characterizations confirm that a ladder-like energy relaying occurs from the high-lying triplet level of the exciplex to a blue emitter, then to the low-lying triplet level of the phosphine oxide acceptor, and ultimately to the yellow emitter. Our results demonstrate the broad applicability of energy relaying in multicomponent systems for exciton harvesting, providing opportunities for the development of third-generation white organic light-emitting diode light sources.

Project description:This study investigated the time-motion characteristics of football teams in the Spanish first division, in relation to their final competitive level as defined by league position (Champions League, Europa League, Upper mid-table, lower mid-table and relegation). Match observations (n = 9641) were collected using a multiple-camera computerized tracking system during the 2013-2014 competitive season. The following match parameters were analyzed: total distance, relative distance (m·min-1), distance < 14 km·h-1, >14 km·h-1, between 14-21 km·h-1, >21 km·h-1, and >24 km·h-1. Total distance and distance at different velocities (>14, 21, and 24 km·h-1) in and out of ball possession were also analyzed. A repeated analysis of variance and a comparison of effect sizes were carried out to compare the performance of the teams. The analysis of the data showed differences in physical performance characteristics between competitive levels. The volume of distance covered in the variables analyzed did not relate to success in soccer. Both successful and unsuccessful teams presented the same running requirements at higher velocities. These findings provide valuable information about the physical demands of the running requirements according to their final position in the league table.

Project description:We examined if the benefits of generation for long-term learning depend on individual differences in performance expectancies (PEs) prior to learning. We predicted that a greater generative activity (problem-solving) compared to less generative activity (worked-examples) should be more effective for pupils with higher PEs, especially in the long run. As a comparison group for problem-solving, we implemented a special type of worked-examples that decreased engaging in self-explanations, because our main prediction focused on PEs moderating the long-term effectivity of less versus greater generative activities. We tested students' immediate and delayed performance (after 3 months) using coherent curricular materials on linear functions in a sample of eighth graders (advanced school track). The results were partly in line with our predictions: Although we found no moderation of PE and generative activity, we obtained the predicted 3-way interaction of PE, generative activity, and time. Immediately, greater generative activity (problem-solving) was beneficial for pupils with higher PEs, while for pupils with lower PEs, problem-solving versus worked-examples did not differ. In the delayed test, this pattern reversed: for lower PEs, greater generative activity outperformed less generative activities, but there was no difference for higher PEs. Unexpectedly, the initial advantage of problem-solving for higher PEs could not be maintained, decreasing over three subsequent months, whereas the performance in the worked-example condition remained at a comparable level for higher PEs. The change in performance in the problem-solving condition for lower PEs was descriptively less pronounced than in the worked-example condition, but statistically not different. We further investigated the effects of problem-solving and worked-examples on changes in PEs after learning and after testing, hinting at gradual decrease in PEs and greater metacognitive accuracy in the problem-solving condition due to a reduction of overconfidence.

Project description:In recent years, multisensory integration of visual and olfactory stimuli has extensively been explored resulting in the identification of responsible brain areas. As the experimental designs of previous research often include alternating presentations of unimodal and bimodal stimuli, the conditions cannot be regarded as completely independent. This could lead to effects of an expected but surprisingly missing sensory modality. In our experiment, we used a common functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study design with alternating strong unimodal and bimodal olfactory-visual food stimuli, in addition to a slight overhang of the bimodal stimuli in an effort to examine the effects of removing a visual or olfactory congruent stimulus for older people (41-83 years). Our results suggest that the processing of olfactory and visual stimuli stays intact over a wide age-range and that the utilization of strong stimuli does not lead to superadditive multisensory integration in accordance with the principle of inverse effectiveness. However, our results demonstrate that the removal of a stimulus modality leads to an activation of additional brain areas. For example, when the visual stimulus modality is missing, the right posterior superior temporal gyrus shows higher activation, whereas the removal of the olfactory stimulus modality leads to higher activation in the amygdala/hippocampus and the postcentral gyrus. These brain areas are related to attention, memory, and the search of the missing stimulus. Consequently, careful attention must be paid to the design of a valid, multimodal sensory experiment while also controlling for cognitive expectancy effects that might confound multimodal results.

Project description:Rapid tests to assess the susceptibility of bacteria to antibiotics are required to inform antibiotic stewardship. We have developed a novel test, which measures changes in the impedance of a 100 nanoliter volume of bacterial suspension to determine an "electrical" minimum inhibitory concentration (eMIC). Two representative strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus were tested against a panel of frontline antibiotics with different modes of action (ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, colistin and imipenem, gentamicin, and ceftazidime). The eMIC measured at 1 h correlated strongly with a standard 24 h microbroth dilution MIC for all combinations of antibiotics and bacteria, allowing strains to be correctly assigned as sensitive or resistant measured in a fraction of the time.

Project description:Implantable chemoport is a very useful device for long-term venous access for infusion of chemotherapeutic drugs and other agents. There are few studies from resource poor countries reporting complications of chemoport. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the feasibility of chemoport insertion without image guidance and by closed technique without direct visualisation of a major vein (mainly IJV) and to study the complications associated with the procedure. This was a prospective observational study which analysed 263 patients who underwent chemoport insertion. The medical records of these patients were analysed for the patient characteristics, diagnosis, port-related complications, and their management. A total of 263 patients who were harbouring either locoregionally advanced or metastatic tumour requiring either chemotherapy or targeted treatment or both were included in the study. In total, 133 (50.57%) were female patients and 130 were male patients (49.43%). A total of 236 patients (89.73%) underwent port insertion procedures under local anaesthesia. None of the patients had any major intra-operative complications. Postoperatively, 4 patients (1.52%) were found to have port catheter malposition; 3 out of this 4 were corrected under IITV guidance as a second procedure under local anaesthesia only. One patient (0.38%) required formal removal and replacement of port. Four patients (1.52%) developed IJV thrombosis requiring port removal and anti-coagulation. One patient (0.38%) developed thrombus in the right atrium. There were 2 port site infections (0.74%) requiring port removal (SSI cat. 5). Low complication rates of port insertion were observed in the present, large, prospective study. Complication rates may be further reduced by using a well-designed procedure, experienced surgeons, an aseptic environment, ultrasound-guided puncture, and fluoroscopy with contrast media.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s13193-020-01265-6.

Project description:Previous work has shown that temporo-parietal junction (TPJ), part of a ventral attention network for stimulus-driven reorienting, deactivates during effortful cognitive engagement, along with the default mode network (DMN). TPJ deactivation has been reported both during working memory (WM) and rapid visual search, ostensibly to prevent reorienting to irrelevant objects. We tested whether the magnitude of this deactivation during WM encoding is predictive of subsequent WM performance. Using slow event-related fMRI and a delayed WM task in which distracter stimuli were presented during the maintenance phase, we found that greater TPJ and DMN deactivation during the encoding phase predicted better WM performance. TPJ and DMN, however, also showed several functional dissociations: (1) TPJ exhibited a different task-evoked pattern than DMN, responding to distracters sharing task-relevant features, but not to other types of distracters; and (2) TPJ showed strong functional connectivity with the DMN at encoding but not during distracter presentation. These results provide further evidence for the functional importance of TPJ suppression and indicate that TPJ and DMN deactivation is especially critical during WM trace formation. In addition, the functional connectivity results suggest that TPJ, while not part of the DMN during the resting state, may flexibly "couple" with this network depending on task demands.
