Neoaltar: An interactive multimedia day of the dead experience.

ABSTRACT: Technology has permeated many aspects of human life, from everyday events, entertainment, learning environments, festivities, even solemn ceremonies; such is the case of the century-old Mexican tradition of Day of the Dead. Altars or offerings as they are sometimes called, are a central part of this celebration; whether they are small homemade shrines or big public installations, they are a narrative medium to tell the life-story and honor the memory of a beloved or important individual. This paper presents the creation of a traditional and technologically enhanced offering dubbed Neoaltar, from the identification and classification of narrative elements found in traditional altars, the proposal of an interactive multimedia interface based on a user experience model, and the construction, installation, live demonstration and evaluation of the altar. The exhibition of the offering was done during the most important and publicly open Day of the Dead event in the Mexican city of Juárez; as part of this study a survey was created, and information gathered from 120 users is analyzed and presented. The Neoaltar strives to tell the life story of the departed by introducing a non-linear interactive multimedia narrative while keeping with tradition by using a non-invasive approach to technology inclusion.

Project description:The importance of emotions experienced by learners during their interaction with multimedia learning systems, such as serious games, underscores the need to identify sources of information that allow the recognition of learners' emotional experience without interrupting the learning process. Bodily expression is gaining in attention as one of these sources of information. However, to date, the question of how bodily expression can convey different emotions has largely been addressed in research relying on acted emotion displays. Following a more contextualized approach, the present study aims to identify features of bodily expression (i.e., posture and activity of the upper body and the head) that relate to genuine emotional experience during interaction with a serious game. In a multimethod approach, 70 undergraduates played a serious game relating to financial education while their bodily expression was captured using an off-the-shelf depth-image sensor (Microsoft Kinect). In addition, self-reports of experienced enjoyment, boredom, and frustration were collected repeatedly during gameplay, to address the dynamic changes in emotions occurring in educational tasks. Results showed that, firstly, the intensities of all emotions indeed changed significantly over the course of the game. Secondly, by using generalized estimating equations, distinct features of bodily expression could be identified as significant indicators for each emotion under investigation. A participant keeping their head more turned to the right was positively related to frustration being experienced, whereas keeping their head more turned to the left was positively related to enjoyment. Furthermore, having their upper body positioned more closely to the gaming screen was also positively related to frustration. Finally, increased activity of a participant's head emerged as a significant indicator of boredom being experienced. These results confirm the value of bodily expression as an indicator of emotional experience in multimedia learning systems. Furthermore, the findings may guide developers of emotion recognition procedures by focusing on the identified features of bodily expression.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Due to the progressive aging of the population, programs to promote active aging have been recommended. However, older adults have difficulty accessing them. Interventions administered through online video games may increase their accessibility, and complementing these with a smartphone app will likely increase adherence and allow for ongoing professional monitoring. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a cognitive-behavioral intervention for active aging administered through an online interactive multimedia video game that includes a smartphone app companion. The secondary objectives are to analyze the moderators and mediators of the change in the outcome variables and to evaluate the adherence to the intervention. METHODS/DESIGN:A randomized controlled clinical trial will be conducted. Adults 45?years and older will be randomly assigned to a cognitive-behavioral intervention administered through an online multimedia video game that includes a smartphone app companion or to a control group that will receive online information on active aging (274 participants per group). The intervention will be administered in eight weekly 45-min modules. An investigator-blinded evaluation will be conducted using online self-administered tests at baseline, post-intervention, and 6- and 12-month follow-ups. The primary outcome will be mental health status as evaluated using the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) at post-intervention. Secondary outcomes will be emotional well-being, depressive symptoms, reinforcement, negative thoughts, self-reported memory, cognitive task performance, sleep hygiene behaviors, physical activity, eating habits, body mass index, social support, dropout, treatment adherence, and satisfaction with the intervention. DISCUSSION:If the results are favorable, this study would involve the development of the first evidence-based active aging promotion intervention based on a video game that includes a smartphone app companion, providing evidence on its efficacy, accessibility, and clinical utility. Project description:(1) Objective: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a recurring skin disease that affects children's daily activities and sleep quality. Due to the limitations of children's understanding and ability to express themselves, shared decision making (SDM) is often made by guardians, which thus affects the acceptance and effectiveness of children's treatments. Previous studies have demonstrated that involving both children and parents in decision making may help improve treatment outcomes; thus, we designed a multimedia mixed reality (MR) interactive game of SDM for children with moderate to severe AD. (2) Methods: Research participants included 6-18-year-old patients with moderate to severe AD. This research consisted of the following steps: designing SDM; character setting and visual design; performing games; system modification and optimization; screen editing and dubbing; and user testing and questionnaires by the System Usability Scale (SUS). (3) Results: We completed the SDM design for children with moderate to severe AD. Four different treatments were biologics, oral immune-modulating drugs, phototherapy, and wet wrap. An animated PowerPoint slide showed the AD apple rolling around before treatments and the AD apple sleeping soundly after treatments. Instructions with video teaching for the four different treatments were played, and then, the MR was turned on so that the patients could help the AD apple in the metaverse to undergo these four treatments. A total of 12 moderate to severe AD patients and six control patients used the game, all aged between six and eighteen years old, with an average SUS score of 81.0 and a standard error of 2.1 points. Adjective ratings yielded a rating between good and excellent. The game showed acceptable usability. We found no statistically significant differences in SUS scores between patients with and without moderate to severe AD or between boys and girls nor significant associations between SUS and age or severity. The analysis identified that the two items with the lowest SUS scores were "I think that I would need the support of a technical person to be able to use this product" and "I needed to learn a lot of things before I could get going with this product". Both of these comments show the limitations of this game. (4) Conclusions: Overall, this study provides the first MR SDM game that has passed the SUS and can be used as an aid in clinical SDM.

Project description:ObjectiveTo assess the impact of an interactive multimedia educational platform and consent process on patient comprehension and anxiety state compared with standard fertility counseling and paper consents in patients undergoing ovulation induction-intrauterine insemination (OI-IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) throughout their first infertility treatment cycle.DesignProspective randomized controlled trial.SettingA university-affiliated reproductive endocrinology and infertility clinic.PatientsPatients aged 18-45 years undergoing their first OI-IUI or IVF cycle.InterventionsAn interactive multimedia educational and consent platform (EngagedMD-[EMD]) before and during the first infertility treatment, in addition to standard fertility counseling by the physician and nurse team.Main outcome measuresThree survey time points: before the start of treatment (T1), at the start of treatment (T2), and at the completion of the treatment cycle (IUI or oocyte retrieval; T3). The main outcome measure was the comprehension score on a 15-question assessment administered at 2 times points (T2 and T3). The anxiety state at all 3 time points was assessed using a modified Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory score.ResultsEighty-six patients were included: 21 in the OI-IUI conventional (i.e., standard fertility counseling group) group, 22 in the IVF conventional group, 21 in the OI-IUI EMD group, and 22 in the IVF EMD group. Overall, the average number correct on the 15-question comprehension assessment was significantly higher in the EMD groups than in the conventional groups at T2 (EMD: 13.2 ± 1.8 vs. conventional: 11.7 ± 1.8) but not at T3. For those undergoing IVF, the average number correct was significantly higher at both T2 and T3 in the EMD vs. the conventional group (T2: 14.1 ± 1.3 vs. 12.4 ± 1.8; T3: 14.1 ± 1.7 vs. 12.5 ± 1.5). The average State-Trait Anxiety Inventory scores at each time point were similar between the EMD and conventional groups for both OI-IUI and IVF groups. Age ≤35 years and IVF treatment were significant predictors of increased State-Trait Anxiety Inventory scores.ConclusionsThe addition of an interactive multimedia educational platform significantly improved patient comprehension at the initiation of OI-IUI and IVF cycles for patients undergoing fertility treatment for the first time. Those undergoing IVF with access to EMD had sustained, improved comprehension at the end of their treatment. The supplementation of a multimedia platform did not alter anxiety throughout the treatment. Younger patients undergoing IVF may benefit from increased psychological resources.Clinical trial registration numberNCT03962257.
