Project description:BackgroundVitamin D deficiency is an emerging public health problem globally, with devastating health consequences. Pregnant women are most susceptible for Vitamin D deficiency, and black women particularly are under double burden of the problem. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency and identify associated factors among antenatal care attending pregnant women.MethodsA facility-based cross-sectional study involving 331 pregnant women was conducted from March to April in 2021. Systematic random sampling technique was used to select the study participants from antenatal care service providing facilities. Data were collected by using interviewer-administered questionnaire and 5ml of blood sample was collected using aseptic techniques. Data were entered into Epi Data software version 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 20 for analysis. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify the associated factors.ResultsIn this study, about 39% of the women were Vitamin D deficient; of which 8.8% were severely deficient. The mean serum Vitamin D level was 24.43ng/ml. Women with Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥30 (AOR = 47.31; 95% CI: 3.94, 567.70) and who never ate egg had a higher chance of being Vitamin D deficient (AOR = 7.48; 95% CI: 1.02, 55.05). On the other hand, women who were exposed to mid-day time sunlight (AOR = 0.30; 95% CI: 0.11, 0.77) were less likely to become Vitamin D deficient.ConclusionsVitamin D deficiency is higher among obese women and women who did not consume egg. Being exposed to mid-day sunlight is protective against Vitamin D deficiency. Having optimal body weight, mid-day sun light exposure and consumption of Vitamin D rich diet might contribute to reduce the risk of Vitamin D deficiency.

Project description:ObjectiveThe main aim of this study was to assess food taboos and associated factors among pregnant women in eastern Ethiopia.MethodsA community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among randomly selected 422 pregnant women at Haramaya Demographic Surveillance System from Haramaya District, eastern Ethiopia. Data on sociodemographic conditions, the presence of food taboos, and perceived reasons were collected using the face-to-face interview method by trained data collectors through arranged home visits. Collected data were entered into EpiData 3.1 and exported to statistical package for social sciences version 23 for cleaning and analysis. Descriptive, binary, and multiple logistic regression analyses were carried out to determine the relationship between explanatory and outcome variables. Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) at p value less than 0.05 was used to declare significant association.ResultsApproximately half (48%, 95% CI: 43%, 52%) of the pregnant women reported the presence of pregnancy-related food taboos. Pregnant women who have heard about food taboos (AOR: 3.58; 95% CI: 1.89, 6.83), pregnant women had friends who avoided food (AOR: 1.91; 95% CI: 1.22, 2.99), women's monthly income ⩽840 ETB (AOR: 1.73; 95% CI: 1.10, 2.73), and pregnant women who had not attended formal education (AOR: 1.95; 95% CI: 1.18, 3.23) were more likely to report food taboos. The odds of pregnant women who had attended uptake of immunization services were less likely to have food taboos (AOR: 0.35; 95% CI: 0.21, 0.58).ConclusionPregnancy-related food taboos among pregnant women are unacceptably high. Therefore, awareness creation and nutritional counseling at health service delivery points are imperative actions for pregnant women to avoid food taboos norms. Further research should be done to understand the social and cultural ground of food taboos during pregnancy.

Project description:BackgroundSleep is a physiologic necessity for all humankind. Pregnant women, in particular, need adequate sleep to develop their fetuses as well as save energy required for delivery. A change in sleep quality and quantity is the most common phenomena during pregnancy due to mechanical and hormonal factors. However, there is a scarcity of data about poor sleep quality and its associated factors among pregnant mothers in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aims to determine the prevalence of poor sleep quality and its associated factors among pregnant mothers at Wadila primary hospital, Ethiopia.MethodsInstitution based cross-sectional study design was employed on 411 pregnant mothers. Data were collected using a pre-tested interviewer administered questionnaire. SPSS Version 23 for Windows software was used for data analyses. Bivariate analysis was conducted to detect the association between dependent and independent variables, and to choose candidate variables (p < 0.25) for multivariate logistic regression. Statistical significance was set at p-value <0.05.ResultsA total of 411 participants were included in the study making a response rate of 97.4%. Overall, 68.4% of participants found to have poor sleep quality (PSQI>5). Age of the mother [age 20-30 years; AOR = 4.3 CI (1.8, 9.9), p = 0.001, and age >30 years; AOR = 4.7 CI (1.6, 13.9) p = 0.005], gestational age [second trimester, AOR = 2.46, CI (1.2, 4.9), p = 0.01 and third trimester, AOR = 7.5, CI (3.2, 17.8), p = 0.000] and parity [multiparous women; AOR = 2.1(1.24, 3.6) p = 0.006] were predictor variables for poor sleep quality among pregnant mothers.ConclusionMore than two-third of pregnant mothers had poor sleep quality. Advanced maternal age, increased gestational age and multiparty are found to be predictors of poor sleep quality in pregnant women.

Project description:The inadequate dietary diversity of pregnant women in low- and middle-income countries, including Rwanda, is rising and leading to macro and micronutrient deficiencies. The extent of dietary diversity and the factors contributing to it are unknown in Rwanda. This cross-sectional study, with 612 women who attended antenatal care services in Rwanda's Southern Province, identified determinants of dietary diversity among pregnant women. A multistage sampling scheme was used in which four districts were sampled, thereafter one urban and one rural health centre was sampled in each district and finally, a systematic sample of pregnant women was selected in each sampled health centre. Dietary diversity was measured using Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women (MDD-W), and multiple logistic regression models were fitted to identify factors associated with dietary diversity. Only 44.1% (95% confidence interval (CI) of [40.1%, 48.0%]) of participants had adequate dietary diversity. Approximately 95.4% of participants consumed grains, white roots, and tubers. The food groups that were the least consumed consisted of eggs (n = 99, 16.4%), as well as those consisting of milk and milk products (n = 112, 18.5%). The factors which were positively associated with dietary diversity were owning a radio (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.90 [95% CI 1.27, 2.85]), maternal education (aOR = 1.85 [95% CI 1.28, 2.65]), having a kitchen garden (aOR = 1.69 [95% CI 1.11, 2.57]) and nutrition knowledge score (aOR = 1.45 [95% CI 1.21, 1.74]) for a five-point increase in nutrition knowledge score. The factors negatively associated with dietary diversity include food insecurity, which reduced the odds of dietary diversity (aOR = 0.19 [0.07, 0.50]) per five-unit increase in food insecurity. Furthermore, the odds of adequate dietary diversity were lower among urban residents than rural residents (aOR = 0.69 [0.47, 1.03]). The household size was associated with dietary diversity with the odds of dietary diversity decreasing by 12% for a five-unit increase in household size (aOR = 0.88 [0.79; 0.99]). 23% had poor nutritional status, indicated by their mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC; < 23 cm). Enhanced nutritional education is needed to improve the nutritional knowledge of this population with particular emphasis on the consumption of animal-source foods. Sensitisation activities promoting ownership of kitchen gardens and radios could improve dietary diversity among Rwanda's pregnant women.

Project description:The aim was to analyze the knowledge and experience of women regarding physical activity during their latest pregnancy. An anonymous questionnaire was completed electronically, in 2018, by 9345 women who gave birth at least once, with 52% of the women having performed exercises during pregnancy. Physically non-active respondents suffered from gestational hypertension (9.2% vs. 6.7%; p < 0.01) and gave birth prematurely (9% vs. 7%; p < 0.01) to newborns with a low birth weight significantly more often (6% vs. 3.6%; p < 0.001). Physically active women delivered vaginally more often (61% vs. 55%; p < 0.001) and were more likely to have a spontaneous onset of the delivery as compared with non-active women (73.8% vs. 70.7% p = 0.001). The women who were informed by gynaecologist about the beneficial influence of physical activity during pregnancy exercised significantly more often (67% vs. 44% p < 0.001). In addition, 13% of the women felt discrimination due to their physical activity during a pregnancy, 22% of respondents' physical activity was not accepted by their environment, and 39.1% of the women were told by others to stop physical exercise because it was bad for the baby's health. Physical activity during pregnancy is associated with improved fitness, decreased pregnancy ailments occurrence, and therefore influences the course of pregnancy and delivery in a positive way.

Project description:BackgroundIntimate partner violence (IPV) against women is a major public health concern in low income countries. Violence against pregnant women has adverse effects on maternal and newborn outcomes. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of intimate partner violence in Southeast Ethiopia pregnant women.MethodsInstitutional based cross-sectional study was conducted on pregnant women who were attending antenatal care (ANC) in Bale Zone health institution during study period. Face to face interviews were conducted using a pre-tested structured questionnaire. Data related to socio-demographic characteristic, pregnancy and reproductive history, intimate partner behavior and IPV encountered during recent pregnancy was gathered for this study. Descriptive analysis and logistic regression were used for the data analysis. Odds ratio with 95% CI was computed to determine the presence and strength of associated factors with IPV.ResultsA total of 612 pregnant women participated in the study. Of these, 361 (59.0%) pregnant women faced at least one type of IPV during the recent pregnancy. Physical violence (20.3%), sexual violence (36.3%), psychological/emotional violence (33.0), controlling behavior violence (30.4%) and economic violence (27.0) were the type of IPV encountered by participants. An intimate partners who were drank alcohol [AOR = 2.9; 95% CI: (1.5-5.4)], partners who were chewed Khat [AOR = 1.7; 95% CI: (1.1-2.6)], partners who were smoked cigarette [AOR = 2.6; 95% CI: (1.4-4.9)], partners who had aggressive behavior [AOR = 2.8; 95% CI: (1.7-4.6)], having partner age ≥30 year old [AOR = 1.8; 95% CI: (1.2-2.9)], unwanted pregnancy [AOR = 3.3; 95% CI: (1.9-5.5)] and history of adverse pregnancy outcome [AOR = 2.1; 95% CI: (1.2-3.6)] that were the factors that significantly associated with IPV of the pregnant women.ConclusionThe prevalence of IPV during pregnancy was high among the study participants. Intimate partners' use of substance, intimate partners' aggressive behavior, older intimate partners, unwanted pregnancy and history of adverse birth outcome were identified as associated factors for IPV. IPV needs to be considered during ANC service and integrated into the sexual and reproductive health education. Community-based interventions should be advocated as a way of health promotion. Counseling, awareness creation, service provision and program design on IPV is mandatory to minimize the victim.

Project description:Objective This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of poor sleep quality among pregnant women in Ethiopia. Method Institutional based cross-sectional study. Setting University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Gondar, Ethiopia. Participants A total of 415 pregnant women were recruited by using a systematic random sampling technique from 28 April 2020 to 12 June 2020. Measurement The desired data were collected through face-to-face interview technique by using validated questionnaires such as the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, Oslo-3 and Abuse Assessment Screen. The data were analysed by using SPSS V.20. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify associated factors with poor sleep quality. Variables having a p value of less than 0.2 in the bivariate analysis were entered to the multivariable logistic regression. A p value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant, at 95% CI. Result In this study, 175 (42.2%) pregnant women had poor sleep quality. According to multivariable logistic regression, being first and third trimesters of gestational age (adjusted OR (aOR) 2.31, 95% CI 1.16 to 4.61 and aOR 3.45, 95% CI 2.05 to 5.79, respectively), consumption of caffeinated substances (aOR 2.96, 95% CI 1.68 to 5.52), having depression (aOR 2.12, 95% CI 1.19 to 3.76), having high perceived stress (aOR 5.39, 95% CI 1.96 to 14.79) and experience of intimate partner violence (aOR 5.57, 95% CI 2.19 to 14.68) were positive significant associated factors with poor sleep quality. Conclusion and recommendation The prevalence of poor sleep quality among pregnant women was relatively high. First and third trimesters, consumption of caffeinated substances, antenatal depression, high perceived stress and intimate partner violence were factors significantly associated with poor sleep quality. This result suggests that all pregnant women should be screened and treated for poor sleep quality during the first and third trimesters.

Project description:BackgroundBirth preparedness and complication readiness (BP/CR) is an intervention designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an essential element of the antenatal (ANC) package with a concept of a global strategy to reduce maternal mortality. In Ethiopia, the proportion of pregnant women preparing for birth and related complications has remained low. Whereas, the need for additional study is indicated to add more evidence to the country's efforts to end preventable maternal death.MethodsA facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 01 to May 01, 2021. A systematic random sampling technique was applied to recruit 422 pregnant women. Bivariable and multivariable binary logistic regression was fitted to identify factors associated with BP/CR practice. Variables with a p-value ≤ 0.25 on the bivariable analysis were included in multivariable analysis. Adjusted odds ratios (AOR) with the respective 95% confidence interval (CI) and a p-value <0.05 was used to set statistically significant variables in the multivariable analysis.ResultsA total of 414 pregnant women have participated in the study. The overall BP/CR practice level was 44.9% (95% CI: 40.1, 49.7). Preconception care utilization (PCC) (AOR = 2.31; 95% CI:1.38-3.86), urban residents (AOR = 2.00; 95% CI:1.21-3.31), knowledge of BP/CR (AOR = 2.29; 95% CI:1.27-3.47), knowledge of danger signs during pregnancy (AOR = 2.05; 95% CI:1.21-3.47), knowledge of danger signs in newborns (AOR = 2.06; 95% CI:1.21-3.47), starting ANC visits in the 1st and 2nd trimester (AOR = 2.52; 95% CI:1.40-4.52), number of ANC visit ≥ three (AOR = 1.66; 95% CI;1.01-2.74), knowing Expected Date of Delivery (EDD) (AOR = 3.71; 95% CI:2.01-6.82), and joint decision-making on obstetric services (AOR = 3.51; 95% CI;1.99-6.20) were factors significantly associated with BP/CR practice.ConclusionBased on the WHO standard, this study revealed a low level of BP/CR practice among pregnant women, with only less than half of women adequately prepared for childbirth and its complications. Moreover, it has been shown that BP/CR practice is influenced by socio-economic, maternal knowledge, and health service-related factors. Therefore, improving the status of BP/CR practice by expanding awareness creation opportunities, strengthening PCC and early ANC initiation by improving pregnant women's understanding, and promoting joint decision-making on obstetric services are recommended.

Project description:BackgroundMaternal dietary diversity is a proxy indicator of maternal nutrient adequacy and improves health outcomes for both mothers and babies. However, little is documented on dietary diversity among pregnant mothers. Therefore, this study assessed diet diversity and associated factors among pregnant mothers attending the antenatal clinic in Shashemane, Oromia, Central Ethiopia.MethodsAn institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 315 systematically selected pregnant women attending antenatal clinic of Shashemane town in April 2017. Dietary diversity was assessed using a 24 h dietary recall method, and the dietary diversity score was computed for ten food groups. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were computed to identify associated factors of dietary diversity.ResultIn this study, only a quarter (25.4%) of pregnant mothers consumed adequate dietary diversity. Mother's tertiary (AOR 3.18; 95% CI: 1.8, 6.35) and secondary (AOR 2.13; 95% CI: 2.32, 8.72) education, household monthly income above 3500 ETB (AOR = 2.24; 95% CI: 1.47, 7.78), livestock ownership (AOR = 4.15; 95% CI: 2.07, 9.86), women who got emotional support from the husband (AOR = 3.49; 95% CI: 1.12, 8.23), and women who participated in the shooping (AOR = 2.54; 95% CI: 3.27, 9.83) were more likely to attain the adequate dietary diversity.ConclusionThe study revealed that the overall consumption of adequate dietary diversity was found to be low. Developing the educational level of women, increasing household income and owning of livestock, increasing husbands' support, and improving women's participation in the shopping are recommended to improve women's adequate dietary diversity.

Project description:ObjectiveThe use of self-medications during pregnancy results in serious structural as well as functional adverse effects on mothers and unborn children. But little is known about the practice of self-medication used during pregnancy in Ethiopia. Therefore, this research aimed to assess the prevalence of self-medication practice and associated factors during pregnancy among pregnant women in Goba town, southeast Ethiopia.ResultsThe prevalence of self-medication was 15.5% (95% CI 0.116, 0.195) in Goba town. Women who had health problems during pregnancy (AOR?=?6.1, 95% CI 2.67, 13.9), women unable to read and write (AOR?=?8.87, 95% CI 1.84, 41.95), those who can read and write (AOR?=?5.26, 95% CI 1.34, 20.66) and had primary education (AOR?=?3.57, 95% CI 1.42, 9.02) were more likely to use self-medication, while women who visited ANC for pregnancy (AOR?=?0.028, 95% CI 0.09, 0.87) were less likely to indulge on such practices. In conclusion, the prevalence of self-medication noted in this work is medium compared to the react of other studies. Health institutions have to give health education to all pregnant women attending ANC services regardless of gestational age and types of health problem.
