Implications for Social Impact of Dialogic Teaching and Learning.

ABSTRACT: The science of dialogic teaching and learning has especially flourished over the last four decades across age-groups, cultures, and contexts. A wide array of studies has examined the uniqueness of dialogue as a powerful tool to lead effective instructional practices, transform the socio-cultural context and people's mindsets, among many others. However, despite the efforts to extend the benefits of this approach, certain difficulties exist which have hindered the consolidation of dialogic pedagogies in the classroom. This review discusses the implications for social impact of the scientific developments on dialogic teaching and learning. Particularly, an overview of the state of the art on dialogic education is presented. Social improvements in academic attainment and social cohesion are some of the fundamental issues discussed. Those are especially relevant to address crucial needs in education and solve some of the most pressing social problems. A communicative mix-methods approach emerges as one of the critical aspects of this field of research in educational psychology to achieve social impact. Some limitations, such as teachers sustaining different forms of monologic discourse, and challenges for a broader impact are discussed in this review.

Project description:ObjectiveTo conduct a scoping review that systematically examines the body of research on social media in undergraduate teaching and learning in order to identify key issues, trends, gaps, and needs. Our objectives include determining what methods have been commonly used to study social media in undergraduate teaching and learning, and to synthesise insights from published research findings within the fields of higher education, educational technology, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.IntroductionThe use of social media technologies in post-secondary environments has been increasing over time, and especially following the shift to remote teaching and learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, this growth has continued. This review addresses a need to analyse and understand the body of research on the use of social media across undergraduate contexts for teaching and learning.Inclusion criteriaThis scoping review includes peer-reviewed journal articles on social media in an undergraduate teaching or learning context published at any time, in English. In addition to including concepts and terms related to social media broadly, based on global social media usage, we include within our search the most commonly used social media platforms. We excluded items from the grey literature (such as reports, dissertations, and theses), and studies that focus on groups outside of the undergraduate population of interest (e.g., in elementary, secondary, or graduate settings, etc.).MethodsSystematic searching will be conducted in relevant subject and multidisciplinary databases: Education Database, Education Research Complete, ERIC, British Education Index, Australian Education Index, Academic Search Complete, and Scopus. Records will be deduplicated and screened using Covidence software, with each record independently reviewed by two researchers in both rounds, screening titles and abstracts in the first round, and full-text of articles in the second. Researchers will meet to discuss discrepancies and make decisions using a consensus model, and a third researcher will be independently tasked with resolving any conflicts. Data extraction will also use two independent researchers to review each article.

Project description:BackgroundIn today's contemporary world, relationships take a prominent role in the lives of adolescents. However, challenges related to mutual understanding and a lack of inclusive environments can often lead to autistic teens feeling excluded.ObjectiveIn order to assess the impact of naturalistic interventions on interpersonal relationships, we conducted an experimental test utilizing Dialogic Reading for Comprehension (LuDiCa) in online reading circles with groups comprising both autistic and neurotypical adolescents. Our focus was on exploring its relevance for enhancing social interaction, particularly in terms of conversational acts, sharing experiences, initiations, and questions.MethodsFive autistic and five neurotypical students between 11 and 15 years old from a public school in Brasilia, Federal District, participated. We paired groups A and B (made up of trios of teenagers) and groups C and D (made up of pairs) in a multiple baseline design per reading group, in which all groups went through the baseline conditions (BL), intervention (LuDiCa) and maintenance.ResultsLuDiCa increased the frequency of conversational acts of both autistic participants and neurotypical peers. In addition, the intervention favored initiations, questions, and sharing experiences, through the shared activity of reading and talking about a work of fiction. Participants rated the intervention in relation to the platform, the book, the reading facilitator, and interaction with peers. We discuss the potential of the facilitator's role in favoring interactions and the potential of LuDiCa as a joint activity for the engagement of adolescents. We also include suggestions for future research focused on the online context and discuss some limitations of the LuDiCa intervention.ConclusionIn summary, our study offers initial experimental evidence demonstrating the positive impact of LuDiCa on social interaction behaviors among both autistic and neurotypical adolescents within an inclusive setting.
