The infant's face diet: Data on 3-month-old infant-perspective experience with faces video-recorded in their typical, daily environment.

ABSTRACT: This dataset represents face experience coded frame-by-frame from nearly 170 hours of infant-perspective head-mounted-camera video, recorded during their daily life by 40 3-month-old infants. It includes information about the identity of the face (e.g., caregiver, relative), length of time the face was in the field of view, location in which the face occurred, and descriptions of the situation in which the infant experienced the face. Demographic information (e.g., age, gender) about the infants who recorded the videos is also provided. How Many Days Are Necessary to Represent an Infant's Typical Daily Leg Movement Behavior Using Wearable Sensors?

Project description:BackgroundCharacteristics of movement can differentiate infants with typical development and infants with or at risk of developmental disabilities. We used wearable sensors to measure infants' typical movement patterns in the natural environment.ObjectiveOur objectives were to determine (1) how many days were sufficient to represent an infant's typical daily performance, and (2) if there was a difference in performance between weekdays and weekend days.DesignThis was a prospective, observational study.MethodsWe used wearable sensors to collect 7 consecutive days of data for leg movement activity, from 10 infants with typical development (1-5 months old). We identified each leg movement, and its average acceleration, peak acceleration, and duration. Bland-Altman plots were used to compare the standard (average of 7 days) with 6 options (1 day, the average of days 1 and 2, through the average of days 1 through 6). Additionally, the average of the first 2 weekdays was compared with the average of 2 weekend days.ResultsThe absolute difference between the average of the first 2 days and the standards fell below 10% of the standards (movement rate = 8.5%; duration = 3.7%; average acceleration = 2.8%; peak acceleration = 3.8%, respectively). The mean absolute difference between weekdays and weekends for leg movement rate, duration, average acceleration, and peak acceleration was 11.6%, 3.7%, 7.2%, and 7.3% of the corresponding standard.LimitationsThe small sample size and age range limit extrapolation of the results.ConclusionsOur results suggest the best option is to collect data for 2 consecutive days and that movement did not differ between weekdays and weekend days. Our results will inform the clinical measurement of full-day infant leg movement for neuromotor assessment and outcome purposes.

26 cm fall caught on video causing subdural hemorrhages and extensive retinal hemorrhages in an 8-month-old infant.

Project description:Severe, too many to count retinal hemorrhages (RH) in infants have been associated with abusive head trauma, but can occur in short falls. An 8-month-old male fell backward from a height of 26 cm, landing on his buttocks then hitting the back of his head on a vinyl floor. The fall was videotaped. Acute subdural hemorrhages were found along with extensive, too many to count intra-RH in both eyes. Falls from small heights on to the occiput can lead to extensive RH of the type often associated with abusive head trauma.

The Development of the Mind: A Three Month Old Infant.

Project description:Infant mental development occurs in interplay with a caregiver. The infant establishes an inner world, a psyche, by using his or her caregiver as transitional mental space for the development of a sense of self. This mental progress occurs simultaneously with motor elaboration, pre-conditioned by neurophysiological maturation. The bodily holding function of the caregiver, through initial skin-to-skin contact, enables the infant to develop a sense of bodily self. The pivotal role of the body as a first place of ego development is illustrated by the vignette of Nino, a 3-month-old infant whose caregiver is unable to provide the necessary physical contact, and therefore insufficiently containing the young infant. This lack of physical holding limits the infant from developing a sense of bodily self, a primary sense of self. Without the caregiver's holding function, it is impossible for the infant to establish a relationship to a whole person.

Cortical networks for face perception in two-month-old infants.

Project description:Newborns have an innate system for preferentially looking at an upright human face. This face preference behaviour disappears at approximately one month of age and reappears a few months later. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this U-shaped behavioural change remain unclear. Here, we isolate the functional development of the cortical visual pathway for face processing using S-cone-isolating stimulation, which blinds the subcortical visual pathway. Using luminance stimuli, which are conveyed by both the subcortical and cortical visual pathways, the preference for upright faces was not observed in two-month-old infants, but it was observed in four- and six-month-old infants, confirming the recovery phase of the U-shaped development. By contrast, using S-cone stimuli, two-month-old infants already showed a preference for upright faces, as did four- and six-month-old infants, demonstrating that the cortical visual pathway for face processing is already functioning at the bottom of the U-shape at two months of age. The present results suggest that the transient functional deterioration stems from a conflict between the subcortical and cortical functional pathways, and that the recovery thereafter involves establishing a level of coordination between the two pathways.

Caregiver-infant's feeding behaviours are associated with energy intake of 9-11 month-old infants in rural Ethiopia.

Project description:Inappropriate complementary feeding, both in quantity and quality, is a major determinant of undernutrition. However, little is known about how infant-caregiver's feeding behaviours affect infants' energy intake. Therefore, the objective of this study was to characterize infant-caregiver feeding behaviours and investigate their association with infants' energy intake. The study involved 106 mother-child pairs recruited from seven randomly selected kebeles of Mecha district, West Gojam, Ethiopia. The feeding styles were assessed through observations of 1-day, in-home, feeding episodes that were videotaped and coded into self-feeding, responsive, active, distracting, and social feeding behaviours. Infants' haemoglobin and anthropometric measurements were taken. The association between feeding behaviour scores and energy intake per meal was investigated. The mean food intake of the infants was very low (11.4 ± 7.0 g/kg body weight per meal) compared to the minimum theoretical gastric capacity (30 g/kg body weight per meal). Infants' haemoglobin concentration was negatively associated with energy intake (? = 0.178, p = .03). Infants' responsive and active positive feeding styles were positively associated with energy intakes (? = 0.258 and 0.432, p = .004 and p < .001, respectively) as well as caregivers' responsive positive feeding styles (? = 0.237, p = .007). Both haemoglobin concentrations and feeding styles were associated with infant's energy intake. Anaemia prevention and control measures should be reinforced. Current nutrition education programmes should give emphasis on ways to effectively incorporate culturally adapted responsive feeding messages in this and similar settings.

Group A Streptococcal Pericarditis in a Four-Month-Old Infant: Case report.

Project description:Purulent pericarditis is uncommon among paediatric patients and cases caused by group A Streptococcus (GAS) are even rarer. We report a four-month-old female infant who was referred to the Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman, in 2015 with pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade. She had initially presented to a secondary hospital with a two-week history of fever, a runny nose and shortness of breath. Blood and pericardial fluid cultures confirmed GAS isolates. The infant was treated with a two-week course of antibiotics and made a complete recovery with no echocardiographical evidence of pericardial effusion at a two-month follow-up. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this case constitutes the youngest infant to present with GAS pericarditis. As invasive GAS infections can present in infancy, early recognition and treatment is required.

SAYCam: A Large, Longitudinal Audiovisual Dataset Recorded From the Infant's Perspective.

Project description:We introduce a new resource: the SAYCam corpus. Infants aged 6-32 months wore a head-mounted camera for approximately 2 hr per week, over the course of approximately two-and-a-half years. The result is a large, naturalistic, longitudinal dataset of infant- and child-perspective videos. Over 200,000 words of naturalistic speech have already been transcribed. Similarly, the dataset is searchable using a number of criteria (e.g., age of participant, location, setting, objects present). The resulting dataset will be of broad use to psychologists, linguists, and computer scientists.

Lead poisoning in a 6-month-old infant: a case report.

Project description:BackgroundLead is a toxic element of the environment that leads to major complications once it enters the blood stream, affecting multiple organs and systems of the body.MethodsWe present a case of a 6-month-old female infant diagnosed with lead poisoning after presenting for routine child health care. The child's mother denied that the infant had a history of exposure to lead-containing substances. After a month of calcium supplementation, the patient's blood lead level remained elevated. We then tested the blood lead level of the mother and father. The results showed that the blood lead level of the mother was 77.0 μg/L and that of the father was 36.9 μg/L. The high blood lead level of the mother attracted our attention. We found that the mother had been using an external traditional Chinese medicine, Hu Wang Fen, which contains lead. After the mother's discontinuation of use of the traditional medicine, the child was treated with symptomatic treatment and chelation therapy. Subsequently, the patient's blood lead level decreased significantly.ResultsLead toxicity can be a life-threatening problem because of its potential for severe complications. In children, there is no safe blood lead level, and the toxic effects of lead can be prevented by the awareness and avoidance of traditional Chinese medicines that may contain lead.ConclusionEven though the diagnosis of lead poisoning remains difficult in children, it must be taken into consideration by the clinician when treating a child using traditional Chinese medicines.

Visual preferences for direct-gaze faces in infant macaques (Macaca mulatta) with limited face exposure.

Project description:From birth, human and nonhuman primates attend more to faces with direct gaze compared with averted gaze, and previous studies report that attention to the eyes is linked to the emergence of later social skills. Here, we explored whether early experiences influence attraction to eye contact in infant macaques by examining their attention to face pairs varying in their gaze direction across the first 13 weeks of life. Infants raised by human caretakers had limited conspecific interactions (nursery-reared; N = 16) and were compared to infants raised in rich social environments (mother-reared; N = 20). Both groups looked longer to faces and the eyes of direct compared to averted-gaze faces. Looking to all faces and eyes also increased with age. Nursery-reared infants did not display age-associated increases in attention to direct-gaze faces specifically, suggesting that, while there may be an initial preference for direct-gaze faces from birth, social experiences may support its early development.

Pulmonary tuberculosis presenting as lung abscess in a 10-month-Old infant.

Project description:Tuberculosis in infants although less common compared to older children and adults, is associated with a high risk for milliary tuberculosis, tuberculosis meningitis and overall higher mortality. Lung abscess commonly presents following severe community acquired bacterial infections and is extremely rare in infants with tuberculosis. This report presents the case of a 10-month-old infant who had an unusual presentation of pulmonary tuberculosis with no cough, poor growth or documented temperature >38 C despite extensive right lung involvement with lung abscess formation and pleural effusions. Inflammatory markers were minimally deranged. The diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis was confirmed based on positive tuberculosis polymerase chain reaction test. The child made a successful clinical and radiological recovery upon completion of anti-tuberculosis drug regimen for six months. This report brings to light that it is crucial for clinicians to have a high index of suspicion of tuberculosis irrespective of age of the patient, presenting symptoms and low prevalence since delayed diagnosis of tuberculosis in infants is associated with poor outcomes.
