Eocuma orbiculatum sp. nov. (Crustacea, Cumacea, Bodotriidae) from Korean waters.

ABSTRACT: A new species of Cumacea belonging to the genus Eocuma Marcusen was collected from the South Sea of Korea. This new species resembles E. amakusense Gamô, E. hilgendorfi Marcusen, and E. latum Calman in having a pair of well-developed dorso-lateral carinae on the flat carapace and similar setae pattern on the telson. The new species, however, is easily distinguished from its congeners by the pattern of dorso-lateral carina and lacking lateral horns on the carapace. The adult male of this new species is fully described. A key to the Korean Eocuma species is also provided.

Project description:A new species of Cumacea belonging to the genus Lamprops Sars was collected from the East Sea of Korea. This new species resembles Lampropscomatus Zimmer, Lampropscarinatus Hart, Lampropsflavus Harada, Lampropspumilio Zimmer, Lampropstomalesi Gladfelter, and Lampropsobfuscatus (Gladfelter) in lacking lateral oblique ridges on the carapace and lateral setae on the telson. The new species, however, is distinguished from its congeners by having a dorsal concave groove and a lateral rounded depressed area on pereonite 2. The new species is fully illustrated and compared with related species. A key to the world Lamprops species lacking lateral ridges on the carapace is also provided.

A new cave amphipod, Pseudocrangonyx wonkimi sp. nov. (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Pseudocrangonyctidae), from the Korean Peninsula.

Project description:A new species of pseudocrangonyctid amphipod, Pseudocrangonyx wonkimi sp. nov., was found in the groundwater of a cave in the southwestern Korean Peninsula. Pseudocrangonyx wonkimi sp. nov. is morphologically most closely related to P. joolaeiLee et al., 2020. However, P. wonkimi is clearly distinguished from P. joolaei by lacking sternal gills, fewer setae on maxilla 1 inner plate, fewer serrate robust setae on the carpus of the gnathopods, lacking bifid setae on the inner ramus of pleopod 3, and fewer articles of rami on pleopod 3. We also determined sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) of P. wonkimi sp. nov. for molecular diagnosis. From the molecular analysis based on COI sequences, P. wonkimi showed the closest relationship with P. joolaei with 15.1% genetic distance.

Two new species of pontogeneiid amphipods (Crustacea, Senticaudata, Calliopioidea) from Korean waters.

Project description:Two new pontogeneiid amphipods, Eusiroides pilopalpussp. n. and Paramoera dentipleuraesp. n., from Korean waters are described and illustrated. Eusiroides pilopalpussp. n. can be distinguished from congeners by the following characters: mandibular palp article 3 has brush-like setation, maxilla 2 has an inner plate that is not enlarged, and gnathopods 1 and 2 ischium has a well-developed anterior lobe. Paramoera dentipleuraesp. n. can be discriminated from congeners by the following characters: head anterior cephalic lobe is sinusoid, pereopods 5-7 are homopodous and slender, pereopods 6 and 7 basis are proximally lobed but distally diminished on posterior margins, and epimeron 3 is prominently expanded posterodistally.

A new species of Monoliropus Mayer, 1903 (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Caprellidae) from Korean waters.

Project description:A new species of the genus Monoliropus belonging to the family Caprellidae was collected from the Yellow Sea, Korea. The new species differs from Monoliropusagilis Mayer, 1903, Monoliropuskazemii Momtazi & Sari, 2013, and Triprotellaamica Arimoto, 1970 as follows: 1) gnathopod 1 subrectangular; 2) pereonites 2-3 with acute triangular processes anterolaterally; 3) mandibular palp, apical article with four simple setae subdistally. The new species is fully illustrated and extensively compared with related species. This is the first record of the genus Monoliropus from Korean waters. A key to Monoliropus species is also given.

Two new species of the family Aoridae (Crustacea, Malacostraca, Amphipoda) from Korean waters.

Project description:Two new species of the family Aoridae, one from the genus Aoroides Walker, 1898, and other from the genus Grandidierella Coutière, 1904, are reported from Korean waters. Aoroidesgracilicrus sp. nov. is similar to A.longimerus in having numerous plumose setae on the basis and carpus of gnathopod 1. However, the new species can be distinguished from A.longimerus by the numerous plumose setae on the bases of pereopods 3 and 4 and the slender basis of pereopod 7. Grandidierellanaroensis sp. nov. is morphologically most similar to G.pseudosakaensis. However, the new species can be distinguished by the presence of small distal and proximal processes and a large middle process on the carpus of gnathopod 1, and the subovate propodus of gnathopod 1. Both new species are illustrated and compared to related species. A key to species in the family Aoridae from Korean waters is also provided.

Description of Deefgea piscis sp. nov., and Deefgea tanakiae sp. nov., isolated from the gut of Korean indigenous fish.

Project description:Three novel strains, (D17T, D13, and D25T) isolated from the gut of the Korean dark sleeper (Odontobutis platycephala), Kumgang fat minnow (Rhynchocypris kumgangensis), and the Korean oily bitterling (Tanakia koreensis) were identified as two novel species. Strains D17T and D13 showed the highest similarities in 16S rRNA gene and complete genome sequences to Deefgea rivuli WB 3.4-79T (98.0% and 97.9%, respectively, of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, 77.8% and 77.7%, respectively, of orthologous average nucleotide identity, OrthoANI, and 21.9% and 21.9%, respectively, of digital DNA-DNA hybridization, dDDH). Strain D17T showed the highest similarities in 16S rRNA gene and complete genome sequences to D13 (99.9% of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, 91.8% of OrthoANI, and 45.1% of dDDH); therefore, strains D17T and D13 were assigned as the same species. Strain D25T showed the highest similarities in 16S rRNA gene and complete genome sequences to D. chitinilytica Nsw-4T (98.2% of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, 82.4% of OrthoANI, and 25.1% of dDDH). Strains D17T and D13 were Gram-stain-negative, facultative anaerobes, rod-shaped, non-motile, and non-flagellated. Strain D25T was Gram-stain-negative, facultative anaerobe, rod-shaped, and motile by a single polar flagellum. These strains had C16:0 and summed feature 3 (C16:1ω7c and/or C16:1ω6c) as the major cellular fatty acids and possessed Q-8 as a major respiratory ubiquinone. All three strains contained phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol as the major polar lipids. Based on polyphasic taxonomic data, strains D17T, D13, and D25T represent two novel species of the genus Deefgea. We propose the name Deefgea piscis sp. nov. for strains D17T (= KCTC 82958T = JCM 34941T) and D13 (= KCTC 92368), and Deefgea tanakiae sp. nov. for strain D25T (= KCTC 82959T = JCM 34942T).

First records of the uristid lysianassoids from Korean waters: redescription of Anonyx abei Takekawa & Ishimaru, 2001 and description of Anonyx exilipes sp. n. (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Uristidae).

Project description:The uristid lysianassoids are reported for the first time from Korean waters with a redescription of Anonyx abei Takekawa & Ishimaru, 2001 and the description of Anonyx exilipessp. n.Anonyx abei is characterized by a distinctively small projection of the posterodistal corner on epimeron 3, different from all species of the Anonyx nugax group which share a constriction at the point of insertion of a distal seta on the inner ramus of uropod 2. Anonyx exilipessp. n. is included in the Anonyx laticoxae group characterized by the unconstricted inner ramus of uropod 2. This new species is distinguished from other A. laticoxae group species by the longer and more slender carpus and propodus of pereopod 6, and the non-lobate merus of pereopod 7.

Daphnia japonica sp. nov. (Crustacea: Cladocera) an eastern Palearctic montane species with mitochondrial discordance.

Project description:The Daphnia longispina complex (Crustacea: Cladocera) contains several keystone freshwater species such as D. longispina O.F. Müller (D. rosea Sars is a junior synonym), D. galeata Sars, D. cucullata Sars, and D. dentifera Forbes. The complex is common throughout the Holarctic, but there are several geographic regions where local forms have been assigned to European species names based on a superficial morphological resemblance. Here we examine the species status of a form that was previously assigned to D. rosea from a montane bog pond on Honshu, Japan. We used two nuclear non-coding loci (nDNA), mitochondrial sequences (the ND2 protein-coding region) and morphology for evidence. The mitochondrial gene evidence supported the existence of a divergent lineage that is more closely related to D. galeata than to D. dentifera. However, morphology and the nuclear DNA data indicated a lineage that is most closely related to D. dentifera. As our evidence supported the existence of a cohesive divergent lineage, we described a new species, Daphnia japonica sp. nov. Recognition of local and subalpine diversity in this group is critical as ongoing anthropogenic disturbance has been associated with introductions, local extirpations, and hybridization.

Yersinia artesiana sp. nov., Yersinia proxima sp. nov., Yersinia alsatica sp. nov., Yersina vastinensis sp. nov., Yersinia thracica sp. nov. and Yersinia occitanica sp. nov., isolated from humans and animals.

Project description:Thirty-three Yersinia strains previously characterized by the French Yersinia National Reference Laboratory (YNRL) and isolated from humans and animals were suspected to belong to six novel species by a recently described core genome multilocus sequence typing scheme. These strains and five additional strains from the YNRL were characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach including a phylogenetic analysis based on 500 core genes, determination of average nucleotide identity (ANI), determination of DNA G+C content and identification of phenotypic features. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that the 38 studied strains formed six well-demarcated clades. ANI values between these clades and their closest relatives were <94.7?%?and ANI values within each putative novel species were >97.5?%. Distinctive biochemical characteristics were identified in five out of the six novel species. All of these data demonstrated that the 38 strains belong to six novel species of the genus Yersinia: Yersinia artesiana sp. nov., type strain IP42281T (=CIP 111845T=DSM 110725T); Yersinia proxima sp. nov., type strain IP37424T (=CIP 111847T=DSM 110727T); Yersinia alsatica sp. nov., type strain IP38850T (=CIP 111848T=DSM 110726T); Yersinia vastinensis sp. nov., type strain IP38594T (=CIP 111844T=DSM 110738T); Yersinia thracica sp. nov., type strain IP34646T (=CIP 111842T=DSM 110736T); and Yersinia occitanica sp. nov., type strain IP35638T (=CIP 111843T=DSM 110739T).
