Optical Lattice with Torus Topology.

ABSTRACT: We propose an experimental scheme to construct an optical lattice where the atoms are confined to the surface of a torus. This construction can be realized with spatially shaped laser beams which could be realized with recently developed high resolution imaging techniques. We numerically study the feasibility of this proposal by calculating the tunneling strengths for atoms in the torus lattice. To illustrate the nontrivial role of topology in atomic dynamics on the torus, we study the quantized superfluid currents and fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states on such a structure. For FQH states, we numerically investigate the robustness of the topological degeneracy and propose an experimental way to detect such a degeneracy. Our scheme for torus construction can be generalized to surfaces with higher genus for exploration of richer topological physics.

Regenerative Topology Optimization of Fine Lattice Structures.

Project description:We present a generative approach for creating three-dimensional lattice structures optimized for mass and deflection composed of thousands of one-dimensional strut primitives. Our approach draws inspiration from topology optimization principles. The proposed method iteratively determines unnecessary lattice struts through stress analysis, erodes those struts, and then randomly generates new struts across the entire structure. The objects resulting from this distributed optimization technique demonstrate high strength-to-weight ratios that are at par with state-of-the-art topology optimization approaches, but are qualitatively very different. We use a dynamics simulator that allows optimization of structures subject to dynamic load cases, such as vibrating structures and robotic components. Because optimization is performed simultaneously with simulation, the process scales efficiently on massively parallel graphics processing units. The intricate nature of the output lattices contributes to a new class of objects intended specifically for additive manufacturing. Our work contributes a highly parallel simulation method and simultaneous algorithm for analyzing and optimizing lattices with thousands of struts. In this study, we validate multiple versions of our algorithm across sample load cases, to show its potential for creating high-resolution objects with implicit optimized microstructural patterns.

Lattice topology dictates photon statistics.

Project description:Propagation of coherent light through a disordered network is accompanied by randomization and possible conversion into thermal light. Here, we show that network topology plays a decisive role in determining the statistics of the emerging field if the underlying lattice is endowed with chiral symmetry. In such lattices, eigenmode pairs come in skew-symmetric pairs with oppositely signed eigenvalues. By examining one-dimensional arrays of randomly coupled waveguides arranged on linear and ring topologies, we are led to a remarkable prediction: the field circularity and the photon statistics in ring lattices are dictated by its parity while the same quantities are insensitive to the parity of a linear lattice. For a ring lattice, adding or subtracting a single lattice site can switch the photon statistics from super-thermal to sub-thermal, or vice versa. This behavior is understood by examining the real and imaginary fields on a lattice exhibiting chiral symmetry, which form two strands that interleave along the lattice sites. These strands can be fully braided around an even-sited ring lattice thereby producing super-thermal photon statistics, while an odd-sited lattice is incommensurate with such an arrangement and the statistics become sub-thermal.

Doublons, topology and interactions in a one-dimensional lattice.

Project description:We investigate theoretically the Bose-Hubbard version of the celebrated Su-Schrieffer-Heeger topological model, which essentially describes a one-dimensional dimerized array of coupled oscillators with on-site interactions. We study the physics arising from the whole gamut of possible dimerizations of the chain, including both the weakly and the strongly dimerized limiting cases. Focusing on two-excitation subspace, we systematically uncover and characterize the different types of states which may emerge due to the competition between the inter-oscillator couplings, the intrinsic topology of the lattice, and the strength of the on-site interactions. In particular, we discuss the formation of scattering bands full of extended states, bound bands full of two-particle pairs (including so-called 'doublons', when the pair occupies the same lattice site), and different flavors of topological edge states. The features we describe may be realized in a plethora of systems, including nanoscale architectures such as photonic cavities, optical lattices and qubits, and provide perspectives for topological two-particle and many-body physics.

Nonlinear optical induced lattice in atomic configurations.

Project description:Traditional artificial lattice with untunable refractive index have been restricted to flexible applied to kinds of micro medium imaging. This study proposes a novel approach to quantifying lattice using nonlinear optically induced periodic lattice, which possesses a striking feature of tunable refractive index, to further broaden current knowledge of optical imaging equipment. We conduct self-dressed and dual-dressed nonlinear four-wave mixing (FWM) signal modulation in the atoms by using the dressing effect of standing waves, and then investigate the space amplitude modulation and synthetization (amplitude and phase) modulation of the electromagnetic induced lattice (EIL) of FWM signal at the atom surface. The EIL presented in the far-field diffraction region confirms that diffraction intensity of the FWM signal can be easily transformed from zero-order to higher-order based on the dispersion effects. The tunable EIL with ultra-fast diffraction energy change can contribute to a better understanding of nonlinear process and provides a further step toward developing two-dimensional nonlinear atomic higher-resolution.

Topological magneto-optical effect from skyrmion lattice.

Project description:The magnetic skyrmion is a spin-swirling topological object characterized by its nontrivial winding number, holding potential for next-generation spintronic devices. While optical readout has become increasingly important towards the high integration and ultrafast operation of those devices, the optical response of skyrmions has remained elusive. Here, we show the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) induced by the skyrmion formation, i.e., topological MOKE, in Gd2PdSi3. The significantly enhanced optical rotation found in the skyrmion phase demonstrates the emergence of topological MOKE, exemplifying the light-skyrmion interaction arising from the emergent gauge field. This gauge field in momentum space causes a dramatic reconstruction of the electronic band structure, giving rise to magneto-optical activity ranging up to the sub-eV region. The present findings pave a way for photonic technology based on skyrmionics.

Dinuclear Copper Sulfate-Based Square Lattice Topology Network with High Alkyne Selectivity.

Project description:Porous coordination networks (PCNs) sustained by inorganic anions that serve as linker ligands can offer high selectivity toward specific gases or vapors in gas mixtures. Such inorganic anions are best exemplified by electron-rich fluorinated anions, e.g., SiF62-, TiF62-, and NbOF52-, although sulfate anions have recently been highlighted as inexpensive and earth-friendly alternatives. Herein, we report the use of a rare copper sulfate dimer molecular building block to generate two square lattice, sql, coordination networks which can be prepared via solvent layering or slurrying, CuSO4(1,4-bib)1.5, 1, (1,4-bib = 1,4-bisimidazole benzene) and CuSO4(1,4-bin)1.5, 2, (1,4-bin = 1,4-bisimidazole naphthalene). Variable-temperature SCXRD and PXRD experiments revealed that both sql networks underwent reversible structural transformations due to linker rotations or internetwork displacements. Gas sorption studies conducted upon the narrow-pore phase of CuSO4(1,4-bin)1.5, 2np, found a high calculated 1:99 selectivity for C2H2 over C2H4 (33.01) and CO2 (15.18), as well as strong breakthrough performance. Across-the-board, C3H4 selectivity vs C3H6, CO2, and C3H8 was also observed. Sulfate-based PCNs, although still understudied, appear increasingly likely to offer utility in gas and vapor separations.

Realization of flat band with possible nontrivial topology in electronic Kagome lattice.

Project description:The energy dispersion of fermions or bosons vanishes in momentum space if destructive quantum interference occurs in a frustrated Kagome lattice with only nearest-neighbor hopping. A discrete flat band (FB) without any dispersion is consequently formed, promising the emergence of fractional quantum Hall states at high temperatures. Here, we report the experimental realization of an FB with possible nontrivial topology in an electronic Kagome lattice on twisted multilayer silicene. Because of the unique low-buckled two-dimensional structure of silicene, a robust electronic Kagome lattice has been successfully induced by moiré patterns after twisting the silicene multilayers. The electrons are localized in the Kagome lattice because of quantum destructive interference, and thus, their kinetic energy is quenched, which gives rise to an FB peak in the density of states. A robust and pronounced one-dimensional edge state has been revealed at the Kagome edge, which resides at higher energy than the FB. Our observations of the FB and the exotic edge state in electronic Kagome lattice open up the possibility that fractional Chern insulators could be realized in two-dimensional materials.

Dark State Optical Lattice with a Subwavelength Spatial Structure.

Project description:We report on the experimental realization of a conservative optical lattice for cold atoms with a subwavelength spatial structure. The potential is based on the nonlinear optical response of three-level atoms in laser-dressed dark states, which is not constrained by the diffraction limit of the light generating the potential. The lattice consists of a one-dimensional array of ultranarrow barriers with widths less than 10 nm, well below the wavelength of the lattice light, physically realizing a Kronig-Penney potential. We study the band structure and dissipation of this lattice and find good agreement with theoretical predictions. Even on resonance, the observed lifetimes of atoms trapped in the lattice are as long as 44 ms, nearly 10^{5} times the excited state lifetime, and could be further improved with more laser intensity. The potential is readily generalizable to higher dimensions and different geometries, allowing, for example, nearly perfect box traps, narrow tunnel junctions for atomtronics applications, and dynamically generated lattices with subwavelength spacings.

Realization of Lieb lattice in covalent-organic frameworks with tunable topology and magnetism.

Project description:Lieb lattice has been predicted to host various exotic electronic properties due to its unusual Dirac-flat band structure. However, the realization of a Lieb lattice in a real material is still unachievable. Based on tight-binding modeling, we find that the lattice distortion can significantly determine the electronic and topological properties of a Lieb lattice. Importantly, based on first-principles calculations, we predict that the two existing covalent organic frameworks (COFs), i.e., sp2C-COF and sp2N-COF, are actually the first two material realizations of organic-ligand-based Lieb lattice. Interestingly, the sp2C-COF can experience the phase transitions from a paramagnetic state to a ferromagnetic one and then to a Néel antiferromagnetic one, as the carrier doping concentration increases. Our findings not only confirm the first material realization of Lieb lattice in COFs, but also offer a possible way to achieve tunable topology and magnetism in organic lattices.

The Effect of Pendent Groups upon Flexibility in Coordination Networks with Square Lattice Topology.

Project description:Gas or vapor-induced phase transformations in flexible coordination networks (CNs) offer the potential to exceed the performance of their rigid counterparts for separation and storage applications. However, whereas ligand modification has been used to alter the properties of such stimulus-responsive materials, they remain understudied compared with their rigid counterparts. Here, we report that a family of Zn2+ CNs with square lattice (sql) topology, differing only through the substituents attached to a linker, exhibit variable flexibility. Structural and CO2 sorption studies on the sql networks, [Zn(5-Ria)(bphy)]n, ia = isophthalic acid, bphy = 1,2-bis(pyridin-4-yl)hydrazine, R = -CH3, -OCH3, -C(CH3)3, -N=N-Ph, and -N=N-Ph(CH3)2, 2-6, respectively, revealed that the substituent moieties influenced both structural and gas sorption properties. Whereas 2-3 exhibited rigidity, 4, 5, and 6 exhibited reversible transformation from small pore to large pore phases. Overall, the insight into the profound effect of pendent moieties of linkers upon phase transformations in this family of layered CNs should be transferable to other CN classes.
