Harnessing transition waves to realize deployable structures.

ABSTRACT: Transition waves that sequentially switch bistable elements from one stable configuration to another have received significant interest in recent years not only because of their rich physics but also, for their potential applications, including unidirectional propagation, energy harvesting, and mechanical computation. Here, we exploit the propagation of transition waves in a bistable one-dimensional (1D) linkage as a robust mechanism to realize structures that can be quickly deployed. We first use a combination of experiments and analyses to show that, if the bistable joints are properly designed, transition waves can propagate throughout the entire structure and transform the initial straight configuration into a curved one. We then demonstrate that such bistable linkages can be used as building blocks to realize deployable three-dimensional (3D) structures of arbitrary shape.

Deployable Soft Composite Structures.

Project description:Deployable structure composed of smart materials based actuators can reconcile its inherently conflicting requirements of low mass, good shape adaptability, and high load-bearing capability. This work describes the fabrication of deployable structures using smart soft composite actuators combining a soft matrix with variable stiffness properties and hinge-like movement through a rigid skeleton. The hinge actuator has the advantage of being simple to fabricate, inexpensive, lightweight and simple to actuate. This basic actuator can then be used to form modules capable of different types of deformations, which can then be assembled into deployable structures. The design of deployable structures is based on three principles: design of basic hinge actuators, assembly of modules and assembly of modules into large-scale deployable structures. Various deployable structures such as a segmented triangular mast, a planar structure comprised of single-loop hexagonal modules and a ring structure comprised of single-loop quadrilateral modules were designed and fabricated to verify this approach. Finally, a prototype for a deployable mirror was developed by attaching a foldable reflective membrane to the designed ring structure and its functionality was tested by using it to reflect sunlight onto to a small-scale solar panel.

Scale-invariant structures of spiral waves.

Project description:BackgroundSpiral waves are considered to be one of the potential mechanisms that maintain complex arrhythmias such as atrial and ventricular fibrillation. The aim of the present study was to quantify the complex dynamics of spiral waves as the organizing manifolds of information flow at multiple scales.MethodWe simulated spiral waves using a numerical model of cardiac excitation in a two-dimensional (2-D) lattice. We created a renormalization group by coarse graining and re-scaling the original time series in multiple spatiotemporal scales, and quantified the Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) of the information flow underlying the spiral waves. To quantify the scale-invariant structures, we compared the value of the finite-time Lyapunov exponent between the corresponding components of the 2-D lattice in each spatiotemporal scale of the renormalization group with that of the original scale.ResultsBoth the repelling and the attracting LCS changed across the different spatial and temporal scales of the renormalization group. However, despite the change across the scales, some LCS were scale-invariant. The patterns of those scale-invariant structures were not obvious from the trajectory of the spiral waves based on voltage mapping of the lattice.ConclusionsSome Lagrangian coherent structures of information flow underlying spiral waves are preserved across multiple spatiotemporal scales.

Visualizing nanometric structures with sub-millimeter waves.

Project description:The resolution along the propagation direction of far field imagers can be much smaller than the wavelength by exploiting coherent interference phenomena. We demonstrate a height profile precision as low as 31 nm using wavelengths between 0.375 mm and 0.5 mm (corresponding to 0.6 THz-0.8 THz) by evaluating the Fabry-Pérot oscillations within surface-structured samples. We prove the extreme precision by visualizing structures with a height of only 49 nm, corresponding to 1:7500 to 1:10000 vacuum wavelengths, a height difference usually only accessible to near field measurement techniques at this wavelength range. At the same time, the approach can determine thicknesses in the centimeter range, surpassing the dynamic range of any near field measurement system by orders of magnitude. The measurement technique combined with a Hilbert-transform approach yields the (optical) thickness extracted from the relative phase without any extraordinary wavelength stabilization.

Guided transition waves in multistable mechanical metamaterials.

Project description:Transition fronts, moving through solids and fluids in the form of propagating domain or phase boundaries, have recently been mimicked at the structural level in bistable architectures. What has been limited to simple one-dimensional (1D) examples is here cast into a blueprint for higher dimensions, demonstrated through 2D experiments and described by a continuum mechanical model that draws inspiration from phase transition theory in crystalline solids. Unlike materials, the presented structural analogs admit precise control of the transition wave's direction, shape, and velocity through spatially tailoring the underlying periodic network architecture (locally varying the shape or stiffness of the fundamental building blocks, and exploiting interactions of transition fronts with lattice defects such as point defects and free surfaces). The outcome is a predictable and programmable strongly nonlinear metamaterial motion with potential for, for example, propulsion in soft robotics, morphing surfaces, reconfigurable devices, mechanical logic, and controlled energy absorption.

Terahertz waves dynamic diffusion in 3D printed structures.

Project description:Applications of metamaterials in the realization of efficient devices in the terahertz band have recently been considered to achieve wave deflection, focusing, amplitude manipulation and dynamical modulation. Terahertz metamaterials offer practical advantages since their structures have typical sizes of hundreds microns and are within the reach of current three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies. Here, we propose terahertz photonic structures composed of dielectric rods layers made of acrylonitrile styrene acrylate realized by low-cost, rapid, and versatile fused deposition modeling 3D-printing. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy is employed for the experimental study of their spectral and dynamic response. Measured spectra are interpreted by using simulations performed by an analytical exact solution of the Maxwell equations for a general incidence geometry, by a field expansion as a sum over reciprocal lattice vectors. Results show that the structures possess specific spectral forbidden bands of the incident THz radiation depending on their optical and geometrical parameters. We also find evidence of disorder in the 3D printed structure resulting in the closure of the forbidden bands at frequencies above 0.3 THz. The size disorder of the structures is quantified by studying the dynamics diffusion of THz pulses as a function of the numbers of layers of dielectric rods. Comparison with simulations of light diffusion in photonic crystals with increasing disorder allows estimating the size distributions of elements. By using a Mean Squared Displacement model, from the broadening of the pulses' widths it is also possible to estimate the diffusion coefficient of the terahertz radiation in the photonic structures.

Harnessing intrinsic fluorescence for typing of secondary structures of DNA.

Project description:High-throughput investigation of structural diversity of nucleic acids is hampered by the lack of suitable label-free methods, combining fast and cheap experimental workflow with high information content. Here, we explore the use of intrinsic fluorescence emitted by nucleic acids for this scope. After a preliminary assessment of suitability of this phenomenon for tracking conformational changes of DNA, we examined steady-state emission spectra of an 89-membered set of oligonucleotides with reported conformation (G-quadruplexes (G4s), i-motifs, single- and double-strands) by means of multivariate analysis. Principal component analysis of emission spectra resulted in successful clustering of oligonucleotides into three corresponding conformational groups, without discrimination between single- and double-stranded structures. Linear discriminant analysis was exploited for the assessment of novel sequences, allowing the evaluation of their G4-forming propensity. Our method does not require any labeling agent or dye, avoiding the related bias, and can be utilized to screen novel sequences of interest in a high-throughput and cost-effective manner. In addition, we observed that left-handed (Z-) G4 structures were systematically more fluorescent than most other G4 structures, almost reaching the quantum yield of 5'-d[(G3T)3G3]-3' (G3T, the most fluorescent G4 structure reported to date).

Self-organizing actin waves as planar phagocytic cup structures.

Project description:Actin waves that travel on the planar membrane of a substrate-attached cell underscore the capability of the actin system to assemble into dynamic structures by the recruitment of proteins from the cytoplasm. The waves have no fixed shape, can reverse their direction of propagation and can fuse or divide. Actin waves separate two phases of the plasma membrane that are distinguished by their lipid composition. The area circumscribed by a wave resembles in its phosphoinositide content the interior of a phagocytic cup, leading us to explore the possibility that actin waves are in-plane phagocytic structures generated without the localized stimulus of an attached particle. Consistent with this view, wave-forming cells were found to exhibit a high propensity for taking up particles. Cells fed rod-shaped particles produced elongated phagocytic cups that displayed a zonal pattern that reflected in detail the actin and lipid pattern of free-running actin waves. Neutrophils and macrophages are known to spread on surfaces decorated with immune complexes, a process that has been interpreted as "frustrated" phagocytosis. We suggest that actin waves enable a phagocyte to scan a surface for particles that might be engulfed.

Input-Independent Energy Harvesting in Bistable Lattices from Transition Waves.

Project description:We demonstrate the utilisation of transition waves for realising input-invariant, frequency-independent energy harvesting in 1D lattices of bistable elements. We propose a metamaterial-inspired design with an integrated electromechanical transduction mechanism to the unit cell, rendering the power conversion capability an intrinsic property of the lattice. Moreover, focusing of transmitted energy to desired locations is demonstrated numerically and experimentally by introducing engineered defects in the form of perturbation in mass or inter-element forcing. We achieve further localisation of energy and numerically observe a breather-like mode for the first time in this type of lattice, improving the harvesting performance by an order of magnitude. Our approach considers generic bistable unit cells and thus provides a universal mechanism to harvest energy and realise metamaterials effectively behaving as a capacitor and power delivery system.

Harnessing Multi-Photon Absorption to Produce Three-Dimensional Magnetic Structures at the Nanoscale.

Project description:Three-dimensional nanostructured magnetic materials have recently been the topic of intense interest since they provide access to a host of new physical phenomena. Examples include new spin textures that exhibit topological protection, magnetochiral effects and novel ultrafast magnetic phenomena such as the spin-Cherenkov effect. Two-photon lithography is a powerful methodology that is capable of realising 3D polymer nanostructures on the scale of 100 nm. Combining this with postprocessing and deposition methodologies allows 3D magnetic nanostructures of arbitrary geometry to be produced. In this article, the physics of two-photon lithography is first detailed, before reviewing the studies to date that have exploited this fabrication route. The article then moves on to consider how non-linear optical techniques and post-processing solutions can be used to realise structures with a feature size below 100 nm, before comparing two-photon lithography with other direct write methodologies and providing a discussion on future developments.

Harnessing Friction in Intertwined Structures for High-Capacity Reusable Energy-Absorbing Architected Materials.

Project description:Energy-absorbing materials with both high absorption capacity and high reusability are ideal candidates for impact protection. Despite great demands, the current designs either exhibit limited energy-absorption capacities or perform well only for one-time usage. Here a new kind of energy-absorbing architected materials is created with both high absorption capacity and superior reusability, reaching 10 kJ kg-1 per cycle for more than 200 cycles, that is, unprecedentedly 2000 kJ kg-1 per lifetime. The extraordinary performance is achieved by exploiting the rate-dependent frictional dissipation between prestressed stiff cores and a porous soft elastomer, which is reinforced by an intertwined stiff porous frame. The vast interfaces between the cores and elastomer enable high energy dissipation, while the magnitude of the friction force can adapt passively with the loading rate. The intertwined structure prevents stress concentration and ensures no damage and reusability of the constituents after hundreds of loading cycles. The behaviors of the architected materials, such as self-recoverability, force magnitude, and working stroke, are further tailored by tuning their structure and geometry. This design strategy opens an avenue for developing high-performance reusable energy-absorbing materials that enable novel designs of machines or structures.
