Interface Chemistry of Graphene/Cu Grafted By 3,4,5-Tri-Methoxyphenyl.

ABSTRACT: Chemical reaction with diazonium molecules has revealed to be a powerful method for the surface chemical modification of graphite, carbon nanotubes and recently also of graphene. Graphene electronic structure modification using diazonium molecules is strongly influenced by graphene growth and by the supporting materials. Here, carrying on a detailed study of core levels and valence band photoemission measurements, we are able to reconstruct the interface chemistry of trimethoxybenzenediazonium-based molecules electrochemically grafted on graphene on copper. The band energy alignment at the molecule-graphene interface has been traced revealing the energy position of the HOMO band with respect to the Fermi level.

Two Cu<sup>II</sup> complexes of 3,4,5-tri-methyl-1<i>H</i>-pyrazole.

Project description:The crystal structure of complexes of 3,4,5-tri-methyl-1H-pyrazole with CuCl2·2H2O and Cu(NO3)2·2.5H2O are presented, namely di-μ-chlorido-bis[chloridobis(3,4,5-trimethyl-1H-pyrazole-κN2)copper(II)], [Cu2Cl4(C6H10N2)4] (1) and aquatetrakis(3,4,5-trimethyl-1H-pyrazole-κN2)copper(II) dinitrate, [Cu(C6H10N2)4(H2O)](NO3)2 (2), and compared to the previously determined structures for 3-methyl-1H-pyrazole and 3,5-di-methyl-1H-pyrazole. CuCl2 forms a 2:1 ligand-to-metal chloride-bridged complex with 3,4,5-tri-methyl-1H-pyrazole, with a square-pyramidal coordination geometry about each copper(II) center. Similarly to the previously obtained 3,5-di-methyl-1H-pyrazole complex with CuCl2, the pyrazole ligands are cis to each other, with two chloride ions bridging the two copper(II) centers, and a terminal chloride ion occupying the axial position. Cu(NO3)2 forms a 4:1 ligand-to-metal complex with 3,4,5-tri-methyl-1H-pyrazole that is also arranged in a square-pyramidal geometry about CuII. The newly obtained copper(II) complex has the same coordination geometry as the 3,5-di-methyl-1H-pyrazole complex, including an axial water mol-ecule, two nitrate ions hydrogen-bonded to the water mol-ecule, and four pyrazole ligands in the equatorial plane, suggesting that similar steric forces are at play in the formation of these complexes.

Polyethylene glycol grafted with carboxylated graphene oxide as a novel interface modifier for polylactic acid/graphene nanocomposites.

Project description:Strength and toughness are both of great importance for the application of polylactic acid (PLA). Unfortunately, these two properties are often contradictory. In this work, an effective and practical strategy is proposed by using carboxylated graphene oxide (GC) grafted with polyethylene glycol (PEG), i.e. GC-g-PEG. The synthesis procedure of GC-g-PEG is firstly optimized. Then, a series of PLA nanocomposites were prepared by the melt blending method via masterbatch. In comparison to that achieved over pure PLA, these nanocomposites are of higher crystallinity, thermal stability and mechanical strength. This is mainly attributed to well-tailored interface and good dispersion. Especially, while retaining the tensile strength of the original PLA, the elongation at break increases by seven times by adding 0.3 wt% GC-g-PEG.

Crystal Orientation Dependent Oxidation Modes at the Buried Graphene-Cu Interface.

Project description:We combine spatially resolved scanning photoelectron spectroscopy with confocal Raman and optical microscopy to reveal how the oxidation of the buried graphene-Cu interface relates to the Cu crystallographic orientation. We analyze over 100 different graphene covered Cu (high and low index) orientations exposed to air for 2 years. Four general oxidation modes are observed that can be mapped as regions onto the polar plot of Cu surface orientations. These modes are (1) complete, (2) irregular, (3) inhibited, and (4) enhanced wrinkle interface oxidation. We present a comprehensive characterization of these modes, consider the underlying mechanisms, compare air and water mediated oxidation, and discuss this in the context of the diverse prior literature in this area. This understanding incorporates effects from across the wide parameter space of 2D material interface engineering, relevant to key challenges in their emerging applications, ranging from scalable transfer to electronic contacts, encapsulation, and corrosion protection.

2,6-Di-bromo-3,4,5-tri-meth-oxy-benzoic acid.

Project description:The title compound, 2,6-di-bromo-3,4,5-tri-meth-oxy-benzoic acid (DBrTMBA), C10H10Br2O5, was obtained by bromination and transhalogenation of 2-iodo-3,4,5-tri-meth-oxy-benzoic acid with KBrO3. Like the previously reported 2,6-di-iodo-3,4,5-tri-meth-oxy-benzoic acid (DITMBA), the structure of the title compound features a catemeric arrangement of DBrTMBA mol-ecules along an endless chain of carb-oxy-lic H-carbonyl inter-actions. A short carbon-yl-phenyl contact hints at a possible lone pair(O)-π-hole inter-action further stabilizing the chain-like structure over a dimeric arrangement of the carb-oxy-lic acid.

Project description:The title compound, C(17)H(17)BrN(2)O(4)·CH(4)O, was synthesized by the condensation of 3,4,5-trimethoxy-benzohydrazide and 2-bromo-benzaldehyde. The two aromatic rings are approximately planar, the dihedral angle being 3.08 (9)°. The mol-ecules are linked by inter-molecular N-H⋯O and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds into chains along the a axis.

Crystal structures of three 3,4,5-tri-meth-oxy-benzamide-based derivatives.

Project description:The crystal structures of three benzamide derivatives, viz. N-(6-hy-droxy-hex-yl)-3,4,5-tri-meth-oxy-benzamide, C16H25NO5, (1), N-(6-anilinohex-yl)-3,4,5-tri-meth-oxy-benzamide, C22H30N2O4, (2), and N-(6,6-di-eth-oxy-hex-yl)-3,4,5-tri-meth-oxy-benzamide, C20H33NO6, (3), are described. These compounds differ only in the substituent at the end of the hexyl chain and the nature of these substituents determines the differences in hydrogen bonding between the mol-ecules. In each mol-ecule, the m-meth-oxy substituents are virtually coplanar with the benzyl ring, while the p-meth-oxy substituent is almost perpendicular. The carbonyl O atom of the amide rotamer is trans related with the amidic H atom. In each structure, the benzamide N-H donor group and O acceptor atoms link the mol-ecules into C(4) chains. In 1, a terminal -OH group links the mol-ecules into a C(3) chain and the combined effect of the C(4) and C(3) chains is a ribbon made up of screw related R 2 (2)(17) rings in which the ⋯O-H⋯ chain lies in the centre of the ribbon and the tri-meth-oxy-benzyl groups forms the edges. In 2, the combination of the benzamide C(4) chain and the hydrogen bond formed by the terminal N-H group to an O atom of the 4-meth-oxy group link the mol-ecules into a chain of R 2 (2)(17) rings. In 3, the mol-ecules are linked only by C(4) chains.

The central meth-oxy O atom deviates from the plane of the attached benzene ring by 0.0911 (14) Å. The dihedral angle between the aromatic rings is 47.58 (11)°. The crystal structure features C-H⋯N and C-H⋯O inter-actions.

Intercalation of Mn in graphene/Cu(111) interface: insights to the electronic and magnetic properties from theory.

Project description:The effect of Mn intercalation on the atomic, electronic and magnetic structure of the graphene/Cu(111) interface is studied using state-of-the-art density functional theory calculations. Different structural models of the graphene-Mn-Cu(111) interface are investigated. While a Mn monolayer placed between graphene and Cu(111) (an unfavorable configuration) yields massive rearrangement of the graphene-derived [Formula: see text] bands in the vicinity of the Fermi level, the possible formation of a [Formula: see text]Mn alloy at the interface (a favorable configuration) preserves the linear dispersion for these bands. The deep analysis of the electronic states around the Dirac point for the graphene/[Formula: see text]Mn/Cu(111) system allows to discriminate between contributions from three carbon sublattices of a graphene layer in this system and to explain the bands' as well as spins' topology of the electronic states around the Fermi level.

Project description:In the title compound, C(20)H(18)N(2)O(3), the C=C bond of the acrylonitrile group that links the indole and the 3,4,5-trimeth-oxy-phenyl rings has Z geometry, with dihedral angles between the plane of the acrylonitrile unit and the planes of the benzene and indole ring systems of 21.96 (5) and 38.94 (7)°, respectively. The acrylonitrile group is planar (r.m.s. deviation from planarity = 0.037 Å). Mol-ecules are linked into head-to-tail chains that propagate along the b-axis direction by bifurcated N-H⋯O inter-molecular hydrogen bonds, which form an R(1) (2)(5) motif between the indole NH group and the two meth-oxy O atoms furthest from the nitrile group.
