Challenging the Top Player: A Preliminary Study on Testosterone Response to An Official Chess Tournament.

ABSTRACT: According to the Challenge Hypothesis, high levels of testosterone (T) are associated with status-seeking behaviors, especially in competitive situations. However, there have not been many studies about rivals' social status and pre-competition neuroendocrine responses. The aim of this study was to analyze whether the participants in a chess tournament showed different pre-match testosterone and cortisol levels depending on differences in ELO (i.e., the International Chess Federation rating to rank the competitive potential and social status between players). The sample was six male participants (mean ± SD) aged 25.5 ± 8.4 years with experience in official tournaments of 16.33 ± 5.72 years and an average ELO rating of 2217.67 ± 112.67. Saliva samples were collected before each round for hormonal determination when participants competed against a rival with a different ELO rating. After five competition rounds per participant, higher rival pre-competition T concentrations were shown when playing against the best-rated participant, but there were no differences in cortisol (C). The multilevel model confirmed rises in rivals' precompetitive T levels modulated by the difference in the opponent´s ELO rating. No significant changes were observed in C. The results suggest that the rival´s status can determine the opponent´s anticipatory neuroendocrine responses to an official chess tournament.

Project description:Competition is a major determinant of plant community structure consisting of both species-specific and general interactions, either of which may influence competitive competency and plant abundance and size. In certain cases, competitive competency could arise from altered gene expression and plant function when an individual is confronted with new competitors. We explored competition at the molecular level by hybridizing transcripts from Centaurea maculosa (spotted knapweed), one of North America's most invasive exotic plant species, to an Arabidopsis microarray chip. Centaurea was grown in competition with Festuca idahoensis (Idaho fescue), a native grass species that generally has weak competitive effects against Centaurea; Gaillardia aristata (Indian blanketflower), a native herbaceous species that tends to be a much stronger competitor against Centaurea; or alone (control). The expression of some genes was found to be relatively uninfluenced by the type of plant neighbor, whereas other patterns of gene expression appeared to be more neighbor specific. To our knowledge, these results are the first to identify genes in an invasive plant that are induced or repressed by plant neighbors and provide a new avenue of insight into the molecular aspects of plant competitive ability. Keck Foundation Biotechnology Resource Laboratory, Yale University. The OAR27K gene chip consists of 70-mer oligos representing approximately 27,000 genes from Arabidopsis. Leaf and root samples were reverse-transcribed into cDNA and labeled with different fluorescent dyes (Cy3 and Cy5) using the Genisphere Array 900 kit (Cat No.W500180) (Genisphere, Hatfield PA). Labeled cDNAs were hybridized to the OAR27Kchip using the Advalytix ArrayBooster DNA Microarray Incubator (Advalytix, Boston MA). Approximately 10ug of each sample was used for hybridization.Experiment 2: Hybridization and labeling followed the procedure above, except the experimental control was Centaurea plants grown alone, and the test situations were Centaurea grown with Gaillardia or Festuca neighbors. In each experiment, RNA from Centaurea grown alone was used as the control (labeled with Cy3) and RNA from Centaurea grown with a neighbor was used as the test (labeled with Cy5). Project description:BACKGROUND:Widespread adoption and continued developments in mobile health care technologies have led to the improved accessibility and quality of medical services. In China, WeChat, an instant messaging and social networking app released by the company Tencent, has developed a specific type of user account called WeChat official account (WOA), which is now widely adopted by hospitals in China. It enables health care providers to connect with local citizens, allowing them to, among other actions, send regular updates through mass circulation. However, with the diversity in function provided by WOA, little is known about its major constitution as well as the influence factors on the WeChat communication index (WCI). The WCI has been widely used in social media impact ranking with various types of WeChat content to fully reflect the dissemination and coverage of tweets as well as the maturity and impact of WOA. OBJECTIVE:There are two typical WOAs available to users, namely, WeChat subscription account (WSSA) and WeChat service account (WSVA). The biggest difference between them is the frequency of messages transmitted. This study aimed to explore the function constitution of WSVA adopted by top tertiary hospitals in China and the major contributors of the WCI score. METHODS:A total of 681 top tertiary hospitals were selected from the Hospital Quality Monitoring System; the WOA of every top tertiary hospital was retrieved in the WeChat app. We divided core functional items of WSVAs using categorical principal component analysis. To elicit the factors that influenced the use of WSVA, quantile regression was employed to analyze the WCI score. RESULTS:From the 668 WOAs identified, adoption of WSVAs (543/668, 81.3%) was more than that of WSSAs (125/668, 18.7%). Functional items of WSVAs were categorized into four clusters: (1) hospital introduction, (2) medical services, (3) visiting assistants, and (4) others. With regard to the influence factors on the WCI, the impact of the activity index of WSVA and the total visiting number of outpatients and emergencies on WCI were statistically significant and positive in all quantiles. However, the year of certification, the type of hospital, the year of public hospital reform, and the number of beds merely affected the WCI at some quantiles. CONCLUSIONS:Our findings are considered helpful to tertiary hospitals in developing in-depth functional items that improve patient experience. The tertiary hospitals should take full advantage of times of posting and provide high-quality tweets to meet the various needs of patients.

Project description:ContextMale hypogonadism adversely affects body composition, bone mineral density (BMD), and metabolic health. A previous report showed that pre-treatment testosterone (T) levels of <200 ng/dl is associated with greater improvement in spine BMD with T therapy. However, to date, there is no study that investigates whether baseline T levels also influence body composition and metabolic response to T therapy.ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to determine if there are differences in the changes in body composition, metabolic profile, and bone turnover markers, in addition to BMD, in response to T therapy in men with a baseline T level of <264 ng/dl compared to those with levels ≥264 ng/dl.MethodsThis is a secondary analysis of a single-arm, open-label clinical trial (NCT01378299) on pharmacogenetics of response to T therapy conducted between 2011 and 2016 involving 105 men (40-74 years old), with average morning T < 300 ng/dl, given intramuscular T cypionate 200 mg every 2 weeks for 18 months. Subjects were divided into those with baseline T levels of <264 ng/dl (N = 43) and those with ≥264 ng/dl (N = 57). T and estradiol (E2) were measured by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry; serum bone turnover markers (C-telopeptide [CTX], osteocalcin, and sclerostin), adiponectin, and leptin were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay; glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography; and areal BMD and body composition was measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA).ResultsMen with T < 264 ng/dl showed greater increases in total fat-free mass (FFM) at 18 months compared to those with T ≥ 264 ng/dl (4.2 ± 4.1 vs. 2.7 ± 3.8%; p = 0.047) and unadjusted appendicular FFM at 6 and 18 months (8.7 ± 11.5 vs. 4.4 ± 4.3%, 7.3 ± 11.6 vs. 2.4 ± 6.8%; p = 0.033 and p = 0.043, respectively). Men with T ≥ 264 ng/dl showed significant decreases in HbA1c at 12 months (-3.1 ± 9.2 vs. 3.2 ± 13.9%; p = 0.005), fasting glucose at 18 months (-4.2 ± 31.9 vs. 13.0 ± 57.3%; p = 0.040), LDL at 6 months (-6.4 ± 27.5 vs. 12.8 ± 44.1%; p = 0.034), and leptin at 18 months (-40.2 ± 35.1 vs. -27.6 ± 31.0%; p = 0.034) compared to those with T < 264 ng/dl. No significant differences in BMD and bone turnover markers were observed.ConclusionT therapy results in improvement in body composition irrespective of baseline T levels but T < 264 ng/dl is associated with greater improvement in FFM, whereas a T level of ≥264 ng/dl favors improvement in metabolic profile.
