Project description:BackgroundVarious evidence-based and student-centered strategies such as team-based learning (TBL), case-based learning (CBL), and flipped classroom have been recently applied to anatomy education and have shown to improve student engagement and interaction. These strategies shift the focus of teaching from knowledge transmission to knowledge construction by students and encourage the use of tasks. This study discusses the use of an active and engaging learning strategy to teach the musculoskeletal system to Year 1 MBBS students (Faculty of Medical Sciences, The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Barbados) and examines the correlation between assessment modalities and student performance.MethodsThe "Active and Engaging Learning Strategy" was used to assess student learning in the form of oral presentations. Students had presentations on muscle attachments, muscle actions, blood and nerve supply, and applied anatomy of the limb musculature. Questions on the limbs (Locomotor System) were included in pre and post-presentation spotters, in-course assessments, and final examinations. Percentages, paired t-test, independent sample t-test, and zero-order correlations were performed to confirm the results for the different objectives of the study.ResultsThe main modes of presentation chosen were poems (37.1%), followed by stories (21.2%), songs (11.4%), and skits (10.6%). The majority of students (84%) found the strategies beneficial and recommended such sessions for future cohorts (92%). Students achieved significantly better scores in post-presentation spotters (p < 0.01) and the marks of in-course and final examinations also showed significant improvement (p < 0.01).ConclusionOur study highlighted that the active and engaging learning strategy can be used as an effective learning tool in anatomy. Students were proactive in preparing the muscle presentations by utilizing their own creativity, curiosity, and intelligence. Further studies should be conducted using randomized controlled trials to assess the effectiveness of various learning strategies which could open a new door to medical education.

Project description:The objective of this work was to provide pilot data on feasibility of using virtual reality (VR) to train undergraduate students in pediatric emergency scenarios. We staged VR sessions for a total of 45 medical and nursing students; in every session, each student managed two pediatric emergency virtual scenarios. At the end of the sessions, students completed a Technology Assessment Questionnaire to evaluate the perceived usefulness and perceived ease-of-use of their VR training experience and rated their perceived level of competence in managing the two clinical scenarios. The median perceived usefulness was 91.7/100 (interquartile range (IQR) 80.6-100), while the median perceived ease-of-use was 77.8/100 (IQR 63.9-88.9). The perceived level of competence increased from 2 (IQR 1-3) to 4 (IQR 3-4) on a 5-point Likert scale, for both scenarios (p < 0.001, Wilcoxon test for paired samples). Conclusions: The staged VR sessions had a good perceived usefulness and resulted in an increase in the perceived level of competence. The results on the ease-of-use, however, show that an assumption that millennials and younger students can navigate with confidence VR hardware in a healthcare training setting should not be made; further work is required to ease the integration of VR into curricula. Project description:Strong understanding of cardiac anatomy and function are essential components of veterinary medical education; however, the heart is considered challenging to comprehend due to its complexity. This study introduced and assessed a new learning resource, the IVALA® augmented reality (AR) heart program in a cohort of pre-veterinary students. Students were randomly divided into traditional textbook learning and AR learning groups. All students underwent a pre- and post-intervention testing assessing baseline cardiac anatomy knowledge, as well as pre-intervention evaluation of inherent spatial awareness. Teaching and learning included a 60-min cadaveric learning experience guided by either traditional learning resources or the IVALA® program. All students completed a participant survey about their learning experiences. Seventy-four students (36 in the control, and 38 in the IVALA® group) participated in the research. Overall, students improved in cardiac knowledge by an average of 24.5% after intervention regardless of study methodology. No significant difference in post-test improvement was noted between the two groups. On a 20-question assessment, students in the IVALA® group improved by an average of 4.9 questions correct over their pre-intervention test, and the control group improved by an average of 4.8 questions (p = 0.9). A positive correlation was found between spatial awareness scores and post-test improvement regardless of cohort group (p = 0.03). Sixty-two individuals (83.8%) completing the participant survey reported an overwhelming preference for learning with AR compared to traditional methods. This study illustrates student preference of IVALA® program in learning anatomy of the heart and supports its use is as effective as traditional methods of teaching with the benefit of increased enthusiasm and engagement.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s40670-021-01260-8.

Project description:BackgroundThe middle ear is a complex anatomical space which is difficult to interpret from two-dimensional imagery. Appropriate surgical knowledge of the area is required to operate, yet current anatomical teaching methods are costly and hard to access for the trainee.MethodsA papercraft 3D design involving anatomical elements added separately to a model was designed, and then peer-validated by medical students and junior doctors. Preliminary quantitative assessment was performed using an anatomical labelling questionnaire, with six students given a lecture to act as a control. Qualitative feedback was also gathered.Results18 participants were recruited for the study. A total of 12 models were constructed by 6 medical students and 6 junior doctors. 6 medical students received a lecture only. Qualitative feedback was positive and suggested the model improved knowledge and was useful, yet timing and complexity were issues. Students scored, on average, 37% higher after completing the model, with junior doctors also improving anatomical knowledge, though these differences were not significant (p > 0.05).ConclusionsIn this initial investigation, the model was shown to be an engaging way to learn anatomy, with the tactile and active nature of the process cited as benefits. Construction of the model improved anatomical knowledge to a greater extent than a classical lecture in this study, though this difference was not significant. Further design iterations are required to improve practical utility in the teaching environment, as well as a larger study.

Project description:Several teaching resources are used to enhance the learning of anatomy. The purpose of this study was to examine the preference of medical students on the use of various resources to learn anatomy and their link to 12 learning outcomes. A selected response item questionnaire was administered that asked students to rank six laboratory teaching resources from most to least preferred, and rate how useful these six resources were towards achieving 12 learning outcomes. These learning outcomes covered many of the learning domains such as demonstrating an understanding of anatomy, visualizing structures, appreciating clinical correlations, and understanding anatomical variations. Medical students ranked cadaveric prosections paired with an active learning clinical tutorial as the highest rank and most useful resource for learning anatomy, followed by dissection videos, electronic resources, and printed material, followed by plastinated specimens and plastic models. Overall, cadaveric prosections were also rated as the most helpful teaching resource in achieving various learning outcomes. In conclusion, anatomy teachers should provide prosections coupled with clinical tutorials as well as electronic resources as students prefer these and think they help them learn anatomy. Project description:Objective: The high didactic potential of Virtual Reality (VR) contrasts with the point of view of students that the technology only has a relatively low significance for current and future teaching. This discrepancy was studied in a differentiated manner in order to gear the further development and implementation of VR towards the target group. Methods: From January 2020 to July 2020, medical students (N=318) were asked to watch ten videos online and rate them on the basis of acceptance indicators (e.g., fun and fairness). Using obstetrics as an example, the videos demonstrated five levels of VR technology functionality (e.g., haptic and adaptive feedback), some of which were visionary, in two use scenarios (teaching and the OSCE). The individual and aggregate indicators were compared with non-parametric testing procedures across application scenarios, functional levels and genders. In addition, correlations between the acceptance and the factors of semester, age, computer affinity, and previous VR experience were analyzed. Results: Across all functional levels, VR was more likely to be accepted in the classroom than in the OSCE. Comparisons across functional levels also revealed that the VR ready to be marketed was significantly more accepted than the visionary functions. This skepticism toward advancing VR technology was most pronounced with regard to the vision of autonomous VR examinations and among female students with a low computer affinity. Conclusion: The results suggest that the students' reservations are due to a lack of experience with the VR technology. In order for young physicians to become familiar with the technology and to be able to use it competently in the everyday clinical practice in the future, VR should not only be used as a teaching tool but also be part of the curriculum. Practical examinations using VR, on the other hand, are only recommended once the technology has become established in teaching and has been proven to be reliable.

Project description:Background: Peer teaching is a powerful educational tool utilized in medical school curricula. Previously, first year medical students taught their peers about the gross anatomical structures they had dissected in the anatomy lab. While this strategy provided an opportunity for students to learn from one another, there were unintended outcomes including difficulty engaging all students. Considering these observations, along with needing to limit student numbers in the lab due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a strategy was developed where students could conduct their anatomy peer teaching in a virtual environment. The goal was to establish an effective and efficient means for students to teach and learn from one another virtually. Methods: Students, working in groups of four, were tasked to: 1) Find and label 4-5 assigned structures on cadaver-based images; 2) Provide a rationale for labeling; 3) Discuss something relevant about the structure; 4) Prepare a 5-minute video presentation of steps 1-3; and 5) Review and provide meaningful feedback on another group's presentation. Student performance on virtual peer teaching assignments was evaluated using a structured rubric and grades were weighted based on two separate faculty assessments. Student feedback was obtained via discussions with the course director, a semi-structured 1-hour virtual focus interview and from course evaluation data. Results: While students performed well on these assignments, feedback from students indicated several drawbacks such as excess time editing their videos, concerns about the validity of information provided by their peers, and the timing of peer teaching to be non-conducive to learning. Conclusions: Although the students viewed the virtual peer teaching negatively, we were successful in developing a platform in which students participated more equally in peer teaching. Recommendations to those considering this platform include careful consideration of timing of peer teaching activities and faculty feedback as well as technology used.

Project description:Pattern classification learning tasks are commonly used to explore learning strategies in human subjects. The universal and individual traits of learning such tasks reflect our cognitive abilities and have been of interest both psychophysically and clinically. From a computational perspective, these tasks are hard, because the number of patterns and rules one could consider even in simple cases is exponentially large. Thus, when we learn to classify we must use simplifying assumptions and generalize. Studies of human behavior in probabilistic learning tasks have focused on rules in which pattern cues are independent, and also described individual behavior in terms of simple, single-cue, feature-based models. Here, we conducted psychophysical experiments in which people learned to classify binary sequences according to deterministic rules of different complexity, including high-order, multicue-dependent rules. We show that human performance on such tasks is very diverse, but that a class of reinforcement learning-like models that use a mixture of features captures individual learning behavior surprisingly well. These models reflect the important role of subjects' priors, and their reliance on high-order features even when learning a low-order rule. Further, we show that these models predict future individual answers to a high degree of accuracy. We then use these models to build personally optimized teaching sessions and boost learning.

Project description:IntroductionThe use of games and game elements as teaching tools has received increasing attention in the medical education literature. Used formatively, games promote student engagement and satisfaction, and encourage collaboration and teamwork among students. They may also help students retain knowledge, although research supporting this notion is limited. This resource contains a 30-minute interactive lab station involving two different game-based activities aimed at teaching functional anatomy of the liver and portal venous system.MethodsThe first activity is a flipped version of a traditional pinned anatomy practical, wherein students place their own pins on a body donor in response to application-level prompts. The second activity is an outlay-type card game where students assemble cards to depict the venous drainage of gut organs in a healthy patient versus one with portal hypertension.ResultsIn end-of-session reviews, several students volunteered feedback that the activities were effective and enjoyable. Additionally, average student scores on two subject exam questions increased by approximately 13% and 4%, compared with students who took the exam before the game elements were introduced.DiscussionThese game-based activities may serve as a starting point for others wishing to deal with historically difficult topics in a more engaging way. The tools presented are low-cost, low-tech, and easy to modify for use with different student populations.

Project description:In dose-finding clinical trials, it is becoming increasingly important to account for individual level heterogeneity while searching for optimal doses to ensure an optimal individualized dose rule (IDR) maximizes the expected beneficial clinical outcome for each individual. In this paper, we advocate a randomized trial design where candidate dose levels assigned to study subjects are randomly chosen from a continuous distribution within a safe range. To estimate the optimal IDR using such data, we propose an outcome weighted learning method based on a nonconvex loss function, which can be solved efficiently using a difference of convex functions algorithm. The consistency and convergence rate for the estimated IDR are derived, and its small-sample performance is evaluated via simulation studies. We demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms competing approaches. Finally, we illustrate this method using data from a cohort study for Warfarin (an anti-thrombotic drug) dosing.
