Quality of Life in POP: Validity, Reliability and Responsiveness of the Prolapse Quality of Life Questionnaire (P-QoL) in Spanish Women.

ABSTRACT: The Prolapse Quality of Life Questionnaire (P-QoL) is a specific questionnaire created to assess the impact of pelvic organ prolapse on women's quality of life. The aim of the present study was to cross-culturally adapt and assess the psychometric properties of the P-QoL for Spanish women. The cross-cultural adaptation was conducted by a standardized translation/back-translation method. Psychometric analysis was performed by assessing the validity, reliability, responsiveness and feasibility. A total of 200 Spanish women were recruited and assigned to symptomatic and asymptomatic groups. The Spanish P-QoL version demonstrated good content validity. Convergent validity showed high intercorrelations with the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory short form and the Pelvic Floor Impact Questionnaire short form. The discriminant validity showed statistically significant differences between the symptomatic and the asymptomatic groups. The internal consistency was high and of acceptable values. The test-retest reliability was shown to be high in all the cases. Regarding responsiveness, the effect size and standardized response mean demonstrated moderate values. The average time for administration was 10 (3) min. The Spanish P-QoL showed considerable support for the appropriate metric properties of validity, reliability, responsiveness and feasibility to evaluate the symptom severity and its impact on the quality of life in Spanish women with urogenital prolapse.

Project description:BackgroundThe Prolapse Quality of Life (P-QoL) is a disease-specific instrument designed to measure the health-related quality of life in women with prolapse; however, there is no Amharic version of the instrument. The aim of this study were to translate the P-QoL into Amharic and evaluate its psychometric properties among adult women.MethodsWe followed an intercultural adaptation procedure to translate and adapt the P-QoL. A forward-backward translation, face validity interviews with experts and cognitive debriefing of the translated version with ten adults from the target group were performed. The Amharic version was then completed by 230 adult women with and without POP symptoms. All women were examined using a simplified Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification (SPOP-Q) system. We examined internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = ICC). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted and model fit was discussed. We extracted a new factor structure by exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Criterion validity was also assessed against the SPOP-Q stage.ResultsThe translated measure was found acceptable by the experts and target group, with only minor adaptations required for the Amharic context. It had high internal consistency (α = 0.96) and test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.87; p < 0.001). In CFA results, the model fit indices were unacceptable (CFI = 0.69, RMSEA = 0.17, SRMR = 0.43, TLI = 0.65, and PCLOSE = 0.00). EFA extracted three-factor with satisfactory convergent and discriminant validity. The P-QoL median scores were significantly higher in symptomatic women (Mann-Whitney U Test; p < 0.001). The score was also significantly correlated with stage of prolapse (Spearman's correlation coefficient = 0.42 to 0.64, p < 0.001).ConclusionsThe P-QoL scale was successfully translated to Amharic and appears feasible, reliable and valid for Amharic-speaking women. Factor analysis confirmed a three-factor structure, inconsistent with the original English version. Further studies are needed to evaluate responsiveness of the Amharic P-QoL score.

Project description:BackgroundThe Rotator Cuff Quality of Life Index (RC-QOL) is a scale designed to evaluate the impact of rotator cuff (RC) disorders on the general quality of life of patients. Our study aims to adapt the RC-QOL into Chinese and to assess its reliability, validity and responsiveness in Chinese patients with RC disorders.MethodsFirst, we developed the Chinese version of RC-QOL (C-RC-QOL) through a five-step procedure. Next, the recruited patients gave three rounds of responses to the C-RC-QOL, Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36 (SF-36) and Oxford Shoulder Score scales (OSS). Then, we calculated the Cronbach's alpha, standard error of measurement (SEM), minimally detectable change (MDC), intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), Pearson's correlation coefficient (r), effect size (ES) and standardized response mean (SRM) to evaluate the reliability, validity and responsiveness of the C-RC-QOL respectively. The unidimensionality of each subscale was assessed by principal component analysis (PCA) of the residuals.ResultsOverall, 124 patients with RC disorders successfully completed the first two rounds of the scales, and 108 patients completed the last round of the scales. Good or excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.953) was found in the overall scale and subscales of the C-RC-QOL, and good or excellent test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.854) was found as well. The SEM and MDC values of the C-RC-QOL were 4.6 and 12.8 respectively. Moderate, good or excellent correlations (r = 0.452-0.839) were obtained between the physical subscales of the C-RC-QOL and the OSS, as well as the physical subscales of the SF-36; similar results were obtained between the emotion subscale of the C-RC-QOL and the mental subscales of the SF-36 (r = 0.490-0.733), which, illustrated the good validity of the C-RC-QOL. In addition, high responsiveness was observed in the overall scale and subscales of the C-RC-QOL (ES = 1.77, SRM = 1.98). The unidimensionality of five subscales was respected according to PCA of the residuals.ConclusionsThe C-RC-QOL scale is reliable, valid and responsive for the evaluation of Chinese-speaking patients with RC disorders and it would be an effective instrument.

Project description:BackgroundThe Anterior Cruciate Ligament-Quality of Life (ACL-QoL) questionnaire is a valid and reliable injury-specific instrument to assess the impact of an ACL rupture on the daily life of a patient.PurposeTo translate the ACL-QoL into Dutch (ACL-QoL-NL) and to study its psychometric properties in patients with an ACL rupture.Study designCohort study (diagnosis); Level of evidence, 2.MethodsThe original ACL-QoL questionnaire was translated from English to Dutch according to international guidelines. The study population consisted of 122 patients with a confirmed ACL rupture who completed the ACL-QoL-NL as well as 4 questionnaires: the International Knee Documentation Committee subjective score, Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score, 36-item Short Form Health Survey, and Lysholm Knee Score. We determined the internal consistency, construct validity, and prevalence of floor and ceiling effects of the ACL-QoL-NL total score as well as its 5 subscales. To determine test-retest reliability, we analyzed the data of 68 patients who had a stable knee condition and who completed the ACL-QoL-NL a second time after a 2-week interval.ResultsThe confirmatory factor analysis showed that the original structure of the ACL-QoL-NL was confirmed, except for 4 of 31 items. Internal consistency of the total scale and all 5 subscales was good. More than 75% of the predefined hypotheses on the correlations between the ACL-QoL-NL and the 4 questionnaires were met, indicating good construct validity. No significant floor or ceiling effects were observed. Test-retest reliability was good, and no systematic bias between test and retest was found. Standard error of measurement for the total score was 4.8 points out of 100, and the smallest detectable changes at the group and individual levels were 1.6 and 13.2 points, respectively.ConclusionThe ACL-QoL-NL questionnaire was successfully translated from English to Dutch and demonstrated good internal consistency, validity, and reliability, with no presence of floor or ceiling effects.
