Glass-Ceramics in Dentistry: A Review.

ABSTRACT: In this review, we first briefly introduce the general knowledge of glass-ceramics, including the discovery and development, the application, the microstructure, and the manufacturing of glass-ceramics. Second, the review presents a detailed description of glass-ceramics in dentistry. In this part, the history, property requirements, and manufacturing techniques of dental glass-ceramics are reviewed. The review provided a brief description of the most prevalent clinically used examples of dental glass-ceramics, namely, mica, leucite, and lithium disilicate glass-ceramics. In addition, we also introduce the newly developed ZrO2-SiO2 nanocrystalline glass-ceramics that show great potential as a new generation of dental glass-ceramics. Traditional strengthening mechanisms of glass-ceramics, including interlocking, ZrO2-reinforced, and thermal residual stress effects, are discussed. Finally, a perspective and outlook for future directions in developing new dental glass-ceramics is provided to offer inspiration to the dental materials community.

Photocatalytic hydrogen generation of monolithic porous titanium oxide-based glass-ceramics.

Project description:A large relative surface area is crucial for high catalytic activity. Monolithic catalysts are important catalytic materials because of minimal self-degradation. Regarding large surface area catalysts, the glass-ceramics (GCs) with high formability, obtained by heat-treatment of the precursor glass, are plausible candidates. This study examines the photocatalytic behaviour of porous GCs obtained after acid leaching of MgO-TiO2-P2O5 GCs. After heat-treatment, anatase TiO2 was precipitated along with other phases. The diffraction intensity ratio between anatase and other phases was the maximum for a heat-treatment temperature of 900 °C. After acid leaching of the GCs, the relative surface area decreased with increasing TiO2 fraction; the surface area was also affected by the sample morphology. H2 generation was observed from porous GCs, while GCs without etching exhibited approximately zero activity. Thus, it was demonstrated that high surface area and prevention of the reduction reaction to Ti(III) are important for tailoring monolithic photocatalytic materials.

Magnetic Glass Ceramics by Sintering of Borosilicate Glass and Inorganic Waste.

Project description:Ceramics and glass ceramics based on industrial waste have been widely recognized as competitive products for building applications; however, there is a great potential for such materials with novel functionalities. In this paper, we discuss the development of magnetic sintered glass ceramics based on two iron-rich slags, coming from non-ferrous metallurgy and recycled borosilicate glass. The substantial viscous flow of the glass led to dense products for rapid treatments at relatively low temperatures (900-1000 °C), whereas glass/slag interactions resulted in the formation of magnetite crystals, providing ferrimagnetism. Such behavior could be exploited for applying the obtained glass ceramics as induction heating plates, according to preliminary tests (showing the rapid heating of selected samples, even above 200 °C). The chemical durability and safety of the obtained glass ceramics were assessed by both leaching tests and cytotoxicity tests.

Surface Characterization and Optical Properties of Reinforced Dental Glass-Ceramics Related to Artificial Aging.

Project description:The development of various dental glass-ceramic materials and the evolution of novel processing technologies lead to an essential change in the clinical and technical workflow. The long-term success of a dental restoration treatment is defined by its durability, which is directly influenced by the oral environment. This study's purpose was to evaluate the artificial aging behavior of nanostructured, respective microstructured ceramics related to surface topography, roughness, and optical properties. Six monolithic restoration materials were selected: milled lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (LDS-M) MT (medium translucency), hot-pressed lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (LDS-P) MT and HT (high translucency), milled zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic (ZLS-M) MT and hot-pressed zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic (ZLS-P) MT and HT, resulting n = 96 surfaces. All the samples were artificially aged by thermal cycling, and all investigations were made before and after thermal cycling. In terms of optical properties, differences recorded between ZLS and LDS ceramics are not significant. Thermal cycling increases the translucency of ZLS and LDS glass-ceramic materials significantly, with the most harmful effect on the pressed and polished samples. Micro- and nano roughness are significantly influenced by in vitro aging and a negative correlation was recorded. Glazed samples are characterized by significant rougher surfaces for all types of materials. On nanolevel, ZLS materials are significantly smoothed by thermal cycling.

Dielectric and energy storage properties of Bi2O3-B2O3-SiO2 doped Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 lead-free glass-ceramics.

Project description:A sol-gel method is employed for preparing high quality lead-free glass-ceramic samples (1 - x)BCZT-xBBS-incorporating Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 (BCZT) powder and Bi2O3-B2O3-SiO2 (BBS) glass-doped additives with different values of x (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15). Systematic investigations are performed to comprehend the structural, dielectric and energy storage characteristics using X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, impedance and ferroelectric analyser methods. With appropriate BBS doping (x), many fundamental traits including breakdown strength, dielectric loss and energy storage density have shown significant improvements. Low doping-level samples x < 0.1 have retained the pure perovskite phase while a second glass phase appeared in samples with x ? 0.1. As the doping level (0.1 ? x > 0) is increased, the average grain size decreased to become better homogeneous materials with improved breakdown energy strengths. Excessive addition of BBS (x = 0.15) causes negative effects on microstructures and other traits. The glass-ceramic sample 0.95BCZT-0.05BBS exhibits excellent dielectric permittivity and temperature stability, with the highest energy storage density of 0.3907 J cm-3 at 130 kV cm-1. These results provide good reference to develop lead-free ceramics of high energy storage density.

Copper-incorporated bioactive glass-ceramics inducing anti-inflammatory phenotype and regeneration of cartilage/bone interface.

Project description:Osteoarthritis not only results in cartilage lesion, but also is accompanied with subchondral bone damage caused by the inflammatory response. It is of great significance to treat osteoarthritis by regulating the immune response. As copper (Cu) plays an essential role in immune response and anti-arthritis, a copper-incorporated bioactive glass-ceramics (Cu-BGC) may achieve the aim of healing cartilage lesion and reducing inflammatory response caused by osteoarthritis. We hypothesized that the Cu2+ released from Cu-BGC scaffolds may satisfy the requirements of cartilage regeneration and anti-arthritis. Methods: 3D-printing method was employed to prepare Cu-BGC scaffolds. The stimulating effect on the chondrocytes and macrophages cultured with Cu-BGC extracts was investigated. Furthermore, the in vivo regenerative effect of Cu-BGC scaffolds on osteochondral defects was studied. Results: The incorporation of Cu2+ into BGC considerably promoted the proliferation and maturation of chondrocytes, and induced macrophages shifting to anti-inflammatory phenotype. Histological analysis demonstrated that the Cu-BGC scaffolds meaningfully improved the regeneration of cartilage and elevated the recovery of the osteochondral interface as compared with the CTR and BGC groups. The potential mechanism is related to Cu2+ ions triggering the immune response of cartilage via activating HIF signaling pathway and inhibiting the inflammatory response in osteochondral tissue. Conclusion: These results demonstrated that Cu-BGC scaffolds significantly facilitated the regeneration of cartilage and osteochondral interface, as well as inhibited inflammatory response, which may prevent the development of osteoarthritis associated with osteochondral defects.

Borosilicate Glass-Ceramics Containing Zirconolite and Powellite for RE- and Mo-Rich Nuclear Waste Immobilization.

Project description:In order to increase the loading of rare earth- and molybdenum-rich high-level waste in the waste forms, zirconolite- and powellite-based multi-phase borosilicate glass-ceramics were synthesized via an in-situ heat treatment method. The effects of the CTZ (CaO, TiO2 and ZrO2) content on the crystallization, microstructure and aqueous durability of the multi-phase borosilicate glass-ceramics were studied. The results indicate that the increase of CTZ content can promote crystallization. The glass-ceramics presented even structures when the CTZ content was ≥ 40 wt%. For the glass-ceramic with 40 wt% CTZ, only zirconolite and powellite crystals were detected and powellite crystals were mainly distributed around zirconolite, whereas for the glass-ceramics with 50 wt% CTZ, perovskite was detected. Furthermore, the leaching rates of Na, Ca, Mo and Nd were in the ×10-3, ×10-4, ×10-3 and ×10-5 g·m-2·d·-1 orders of magnitude on the 28th leaching day, respectively.

Bioactivity of Sodium Free Fluoride Containing Glasses and Glass-Ceramics.

Project description:The bioactivity of a series of fluoride-containing sodium-free calcium and strontium phosphosilicate glasses has been tested in vitro. Glasses with high fluoride content were partially crystallised to apatite and other fluoride-containing phases. The bioactivity study was carried out in Tris and SBF buffers, and apatite formation was monitored by XRD, FTIR and solid state NMR. Ion release in solutions has been measured using ICP-OES and fluoride-ion selective electrode. The results show that glasses with low amounts of fluoride that were initially amorphous degraded rapidly in Tris buffer and formed apatite as early as 3 h after immersion. The apatite was identified as fluorapatite by 19F MAS-NMR after 6 h of immersion. Glass degradation and apatite formation was significantly slower in SBF solution compared to Tris. On immersion of the partially crystallised glasses, the fraction of apatite increased at 3 h compared to the amount of apatite prior to the treatment. Thus, partial crystallisation of the glasses has not affected bioactivity significantly. Fast dissolution of the amorphous phase was also indicated. There was no difference in kinetics between Tris and SBF studies when the glass was partially crystallised to apatite before immersion. Two different mechanisms of apatite formation for amorphous or partially crystallised glasses are discussed.

Laser-assisted embedding of all-glass optical fiber sensors into bulk ceramics for high-temperature applications.

Project description:We develop a laser-assisted sensor embedding process to embed all-glass optical fiber sensors into bulk ceramics for high-temperature applications. A specially designed two-step microchannel was fabricated on an Al2O3 substrate for sensor embedment using a picosecond (ps) laser. An optical fiber Intrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer (IFPI) sensor was embedded at the bottom of the microchannel and covered by Al2O3 slurry which was subsequently sintered by a CO2 laser. The sensor spectrum was in-situ monitored during the laser sintering process to ensure the survival of the sensor and optimize the laser sintering parameters. By testing in furnace through high temperature, the embedded optical fiber shows improved stability after CO2 laser sealing, resulting in the linear temperature response of the embedded optical fiber IFPI sensor. To improve the embedded IFPI sensor for thermal strain measurement, a dummy fiber was co-embedded with the sensing fiber to improve the mechanical bonding between the sensing fiber and the ceramic substrate so that the thermal strain of the ceramic substrate can apply on the sensing fiber. The response sensitivity, measurement repeatability and high-temperature long-term stability of the embedded optical fiber IFPI sensor were evaluated in this work.

Structural properties of fluorozirconate-based glass ceramics doped with multivalent europium.

Project description:The structure/property relationships of fluorochlorozirconate glass ceramics as a function of divalent and trivalent europium (Eu) co-doping and thermal processing have been investigated; the influence of doping ratio on the formation of barium chloride (BaCl(2)) nanocrystals therein was elucidated. X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy shows that the post-thermal annealing changes the Eu valence of the as-poured glass slightly, but during the melting process Eu(3+) is more strongly reduced to Eu(2+), in particular, when doped as a chloride instead of fluoride compound. The Eu(2+)-to-Eu(3+) doping ratio also plays a significant role in chemical equilibrium in the melt. X-ray diffraction measurements indicate that a higher Eu(2+) fraction leads to a BaCl(2) phase transition from hexagonal to orthorhombic structure at a lower temperature.

Thermal Evolutions to Glass-Ceramics Bearing Calcium Tungstate Crystals in Borate Glasses Doped with Photoluminescent Eu3+ Ions.

Project description:Thermal evolutions of calcium-tungstate-borate glasses were investigated for the development of luminescent glass-ceramics by using Eu3+ dopant in a borate glass matrix with calcium tungstate, which was expected to have a combined character of glass and ceramics. This study revealed that single-phase precipitation of CaWO4 crystals in borate glass matrix was possible by heat-treatment at a temperature higher than glass transition temperature Tg for (100-x) (33CaO-67B2O3)-xCa3WO6 (x = 8-15 mol%). Additionally, the crystallization of CaWO4 was found by Raman spectroscopy due to the formation of W=O double bondings of WO4 tetrahedra in the pristine glass despite starting with the higher calcium content of Ca3WO6. Eu3+ ions were excluded from the CaWO4 crystals and positioned in the borate glass phase as a stable site for them, which provided local environments in higher symmetry around Eu3+ ions.
