Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviors of Young Children: Trends from 2009 to 2018.

ABSTRACT: Over the last decade, the lives of children in several countries, including Greece, have been affected by recession. The aim of the present study was (a) to examine time trends in physical activity (PA) and screen time (ST) of Greek preschool children, together with their family affluence (FA), from 2009 until 2018, and to explore the associations among them; and (b) to investigate the connections of parental educational level and children's BMIs to their achieving ST (<1h/day) and PA (11,500 steps/day) guidelines. A total of 652 children from four cross-sectional cohorts participated. PA was recorded with Omron HJ-720IT-E2 pedometers, whereas ST, family affluence (FA) and parental educational level were reported by participants' parents. The results of the one-way ANOVAs that were computed revealed statistically significant differences among cohorts, albeit of no practical importance, in PA, ST and FA. According to the regressions calculated, neither BMI nor the educational level was related to membership in ST and PA guidelines groups. ST was a significant predictor of children's PA in all week periods (school-time, leisure-time, weekend), whereas FA was not such a strong predictor. Multilevel interventions aiming at both ST and PA seem to be imperative for the benefit of young children's health.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Dramatic increases in child overweight have occurred in China. A comprehensive look at trends in physical activity and sedentary behaviors among Chinese youth is needed. The study aimed to examine trends in domain-specific physical activity and sedentary behaviors, explore mean and distributional changes in predicted behaviors over time, and investigate how behaviors vary by residence. METHODS:Using 2004-2011 China Health and Nutrition Survey data, adjusted means for MET-hours/week from physical activity and hours/week from sedentary behaviors were determined for school children (6-18 years), stratifying by gender, age group, and residence. Physical activity domains included in-school physical activity, active leisure (out-of-school physical activity), active travel (walking or biking), and domestic activity (cooking, cleaning, and child care). For each physical activity domain, the MET-hours/week measure was determined from the total weekly time spent (hours) in domain-specific activities and corresponding MET-values using the Compendium of Energy Expenditures for Youth. Sedentary behaviors included television, computer use, homework, and other behaviors (board games, toys, extracurricular reading and writing). For each sedentary behavior, the hours/week measure was determined from total weekly time spent in specific sedentary behaviors. Residence groups included megacities (population ? 20million), cities/towns (300,000 ? population < 20million), and rural/suburban areas (population < 300,000). Repeated measure linear mixed and quantile regression models were used to predict adjusted means. RESULTS:Little change in physical activity behaviors occurred over time, with the exception of statistically significant trends toward increased domestic activity among male children (p < .05). Across all gender and age groups, statistically significant trends over time toward an average increase in computer use were seen (p < .01); these increases were largely driven by those ?50th percentile on the distribution. Children living in megacities (versus rural areas) reported higher levels of physical activity, homework, and computer use. CONCLUSIONS:Intensified, systematic intervention and policy efforts promoting physical activity and reducing sedentary behaviors among children are needed.

Project description:BackgroundKnowledge of developmental trends in meeting age-specific 24-hour movement behaviour guidelines is lacking. This study describes developmental trends in device-measured physical activity and sedentary time over a three-year period among Western Australian children aged two to seven years, including differences between boys and girls. The proportion of children meeting age-specific physical activity guidelines before and after they transition to full-time school was also examined.MethodsData from waves 1 and 2 of the Play Spaces and Environments for Children's Physical Activity (PLAYCE) cohort study were used (analysis n = 1217). Physical activity and sedentary time were measured by accelerometry at ages two to five (preschool, wave 1) and ages five to seven (commenced full-time school, wave 2). Accelerometer data were processed using a validated machine-learning physical activity classification model. Daily time spent in sedentary behaviour, energetic play (moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA)), total physical activity, and meeting physical activity guidelines were analysed using linear and generalised linear mixed-effects models with age by sex interaction terms.ResultsAll movement behaviours changed significantly with increasing age, and trends were similar in boys and girls. Total daily physical activity increased from age two to five then declined to age seven. Mean daily total physical activity exceeded 180 min/day from ages two to five. Daily energetic play increased significantly from age two to seven, however, was below 60 min/day at all ages except for seven-year-old boys. Daily sedentary time decreased to age five then increased to age seven but remained lower than at age two. All two-year-olds met their age-specific physical activity guideline, decreasing to 5% of girls and 6% of boys at age four. At age seven, 46% of boys and 35% of girls met their age-specific physical activity guideline.ConclusionsYoung children's energetic play and total physical activity increased with age, but few children aged three to seven met the energetic play (MVPA) guideline. Interventions should focus on increasing children's energetic play in early childhood. Clearer guidance and strategies are needed to support young children as they change developmentally and as they transition from one age-specific movement guideline to the next.

Project description:BackgroundAmerican women tend to reduce physical activity (PA) during the transition to motherhood. Their main barrier to participation in PA is lack of time due to new/increased parenting and housework responsibilities. Because there are known racial/ethnic variations in time spent on housework among American women, their PA changes during the transition to motherhood might also differ by racial/ ethnic background. This study aimed to compare PA between American mothers of young child(ren) under age 5 years (YC) and American women without children by their racial/ethnic background.MethodsSecondary data analyses were conducted using 2011-2018 US National Health and Nutrition Survey data. The study sample included 4,892 women aged 20-45 years (Asian n = 760; Black n = 1,162; Hispanic n = 1,324; White n = 1,646). Participants completed a Physical Activity Questionnaire that asked about participation in transportation and leisure-time moderate- and vigorous-intensity PA (MVPA; minutes/week). Multivariable regression analyses were conducted to compare MVPA among women living without children and with YC (no older children) in each of the racial/ethnic groups.ResultsOverall, the prevalence of physical inactivity, defined as zero minutes of MVPA in a typical week, was 43% (95% CI = 38-49%) vs. 32% (95% CI = 29-35%) among women living with YC vs. without children. The adjusted odds of physical inactivity for women living with YC, compared to women living without children, was significantly higher among Asian (OR = 2.08 [95% CI = 1.37-3.17]) and White women (OR = 1.63 [95% CI = 1.11-2.38]), while it was statistically insignificant among Hispanic and Black women. Among women who reported participating in MVPA, Asian women living with YC had 35 fewer minutes/week of MVPA than their counterparts living without children (p = 0.06), while other racial and ethnic groups showed no significant differences.ConclusionsAmerican mothers of YC were less likely to engage in transportation or leisure-time MVPA, compared to those living without children. This association was particularly strong among Asian women. The study results suggest that a PA reduction in the transition to motherhood may be particularly large among Asian American women, calling for targeted efforts for PA promotion among Asian American mothers of YC; e.g., culturally-tailored community-based physical activity programs for Asian American mothers.
