<i>Mycobacterium kansasii</i> is an important opportunistic pathogen of humans and has a close phylogenetic relationship with <i>Mycobacterium tuberculosis</i>. Seven subtypes (I-VII) have been identified using molecular biology approaches, of which subtype I is the most frequent causative agent of human disease.
