Gas-phase kinetics of CH₃CHO with OH radicals between 11.7 and 177.5 K.

ABSTRACT: Gas-phase reactions in the interstellar medium (ISM) are a source of molecules in this environment. The knowledge of the rate coefficient for neutral-neutral reactions as a function of temperature, k(T), is essential to improve astrochemical models. In this work, we have experimentally measured k(T) for the reaction between the OH radical and acetaldehyde, both present in many sources of the ISM. Laser techniques coupled to a CRESU system were used to perform the kinetic measurements. The obtained modified Arrhenius equation is k(T = 11.7-177.5 K) = (1.2 ± 0.2) × 10-11 (T/300 K)-(1.8±0.1) exp-{(28.7 ± 2.5)/T} cm3 molecule-1 s-1. The k(T) value of the title reaction has been measured for the first time below 60 K. No pressure dependence of k(T) was observed at ca. 21, 50, 64 and 106 K. Finally, a pure gas-phase model indicates that the title reaction could become the main CH3CO formation pathway in dark molecular clouds, assuming that CH3CO is the main reaction product at 10 K.

Project description:The present relative kinetic study reports on the experimentally determined gas-phase reaction rate coefficients of OH radicals with a series of seven cis-3-hexenyl esters. The experiments were carried out in the environmental simulation chamber made of quartz from the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi (ESC-Q-UAIC), Romania, at a temperature of (298 ± 2) K and a total air pressure of (1000 ± 10) mbar. In situ long-path Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to monitor cis-3-hexenyl formate (Z3HF, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)H), cis-3-hexenyl acetate (Z3HAc, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)CH3), cis-3-hexenyl isobutyrate (Z3HiB, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)CH(CH3)2), cis-3-hexenyl 3-methylbutanoate (Z3H3MeB, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)CH2CH(CH3)2), cis-3-hexenyl hexanoate (Z3HH, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)(CH2)4CH3), cis-3-hexenyl cis-3-hexenoate (Z3HZ3H, (Z,Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)CH2CH═CHCH2CH3), cis-3-hexenyl benzoate (Z3HBz, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)C6H5), and the reference compounds. The following reaction rate coefficients (in 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1) were obtained for the OH radical-initiated gas-phase oxidation of cis-3-hexenyl esters: (4.13 ± 0.45) for Z3HF, (4.19 ± 0.38) for Z3HAc, (4.84 ± 0.39) for Z3HiB, (5.39 ± 0.61) for Z3H3MeB, (7.00 ± 0.56) for Z3HH, (10.58 ± 1.40) for Z3HZ3H, and (3.41 ± 0.28) for Z3HBz. The results are discussed in terms of hexenyl ester reactivity and compared with the available literature data and structure-activity relationship (SAR) estimates. The atmospheric implications based on the average lifetimes of the investigated cis-3-hexenyl esters are discussed in the present study. The gas-phase rate coefficients for OH radical reactions are given herein for the first time for cis-3-hexenyl isobutyrate, cis-3-hexenyl 3-methylbutanoate, cis-3-hexenyl hexanoate cis-3-hexenyl cis-3-hexenoate, and cis-3-hexenyl benzoate. The newly determined gas-phase reaction rate coefficients provide new information for existing kinetic databases and contribute to the further development of SAR methodologies useful for predicting the reactivity of oxygenated volatile organic compounds.

Project description:The potential energy surface (PES) of the C6H5 + NH2 reaction has been investigated by using ab initio CCSD(T)//B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,2p) calculations. The conventional transition-state theory (TST) and the variable reaction coordinate-TST (VRC-TST) have been used to predict the rate constants for the channels possessing tight and barrierless transition states, respectively. The Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus/Master equation (RRKM/ME) theory has been utilized to determine the pressure-dependent rate constants for these reactions. The PES shows that the reaction begins with an exothermic barrierless addition of NH2 to C6H5 producing the vital intermediate state, namely, aniline (C6H5NH2, IS1). Once IS1 is generated, it can further isomerize to various intermediate states, which can give rise to different products, including PR4 (4,5,6-trihydro-1-amino phenyl + H2), PR5 (3,4,5,6-tetrahydro phenyl + NH3), PR6 (2,3,5,6-tetrahydro-1-imidogen phenyl + H2), PR9 (3,4,5,6-tetrahydro-1-imidogen phenyl + H2), and PR10 (2,5,6-trihydro-1-amino phenyl + H2), of which the most stable product, PR5, was formed by the most favorable channel going through the two advantageous transition states T1/11 (-28.9 kcal/mol) and T11P5 (-21.5 kcal/mol). The calculated rate constants for the low-energy channel, 1.37 × 10-9 and 2.16 × 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at T = 300, P = 1 Torr and T = 2000 K, P = 760 Torr, respectively, show that the title reaction is almost pressure- and temperature-dependent. The negative temperature-dependent rate coefficients can be expressed in the modified Arrhenius form of k 1 = 8.54 × 1013 T -7.20 exp (-7.07 kcal·mol-1/RT) and k 2 = 2.42 × 1015 T -7.61 exp (-7.75 kcal·mol-1/RT) at 1 and 10 Torr, respectively, and in the temperature range of 300-2000 K. The forward and reverse rate coefficients as well as the high-pressure equilibrium constants of the C6H5 + NH2 ↔ IS1 process were also predicted; their values revealed that its kinetics do not depend on pressure at low temperature but strongly depend on pressure at high temperature. Moreover, the predicted formation enthalpies of reactants and the enthalpy changes of some channels are in good agreement with the experimental results.
