The Impact of Voice Leading and Harmony on Musical Expectancy.

ABSTRACT: In Western tonal music, voice leading (VL) and harmony are two central concepts influencing whether a musical sequence is perceived as well-formed. However, experimental studies have primarily focused on the effect of harmony on the cognitive processing of polyphonic music. The additional effect of VL remains unknown, despite music theory suggesting VL to be tightly connected to harmony. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate and compare the effects of both VL and harmony on listener expectations. Using a priming paradigm and a choice reaction time task, participants (N?=?34) were asked to indicate whether the final chord in a sequence had a different timbre than the preceding ones (cover task), with the experimental conditions being good and poor VL or harmony, respectively. An analysis with generalised mixed effects models revealed a significant influence of both VL and harmony on reaction times (RTs). Moreover, pairwise comparison showed significantly faster RTs when VL was good as compared to both VL and harmony being poor, which was not the case when only harmony was good. This study thus provides evidence for the additional importance of VL for the processing of Western polyphonic music.

Project description:BackgroundThe COVID-19 virus pandemic has caused a significant number of deaths worldwide. If the prevalence of the infection continues to grow, this could impact life expectancy. This paper provides first estimates of the potential direct impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on period life expectancy.MethodsFrom the estimates of bias-adjusted age-specific infection fatality rates in Hubei (China) and a range of six prevalence rate assumptions ranging from 1% to 70%, we built a discrete-time microsimulation model that simulates the number of people infected by COVID-19, the number dying from it, and the number of deaths from all causes week by week for a period of one year. We applied our simulation to four broad regions: North America and Europe; Latin America and the Caribbean; Southeastern Asia; and sub-Saharan African. For each region, 100,000 individuals per each 5-year age group are simulated.ResultsAt a 10% COVID-19 prevalence rate, the loss in life expectancy at birth is likely above 1 year in North America and Europe and in Latin America and the Caribbean. In Southeastern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, one year lost in life expectancy corresponds to an infection prevalence of about 15% and 25%, respectively. Given the uncertainty in fatality rates, with a 50% prevalence of COVID-19 infections under 95% prediction intervals, life expectancy would drop by 3 to 9 years in North America and Europe, by 3 to 8 years in Latin America and the Caribbean, by 2 to 7 years in Southeastern Asia, and by 1 to 4 years in sub-Saharan Africa. In all prevalence scenarios, as long as the COVID-19 infection prevalence rate remains below 1 or 2%, COVID-19 would not affect life expectancy in a substantial manner.InterpretationIn regions with relatively high life expectancy, if the infection prevalence threshold exceeds 1 or 2%, the COVID-19 pandemic will break the secular trend of increasing life expectancy, resulting in a decline in period life expectancy. With life expectancy being a key indicator of human development, mortality increase, especially among the vulnerable subgroups of populations, would set a country back on its path of human development.

Project description:The Voice Handicap Index (VHI) is a patient-centered evaluation tool specifically designed for assessing voice-related quality of life. Although the VHI has been extensively used in patients with voice disorders, its applicability in stroke patients has not been fully established. This prospective cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the feasibility of using the VHI questionnaire in identifying stroke patients with voice problems. The study included a cohort of acute to subacute first-ever stroke patients (n = 48), with or without voice problems, as well as other non-stroke patients (n = 31) who agreed to complete the VHI questionnaire. Stroke patients with self-reported voice problems demonstrated significantly higher VHI scores and poorer life quality scores compared to the control groups. These patients also had lower Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Modified Barthel Index (MBI), and Euro-QoL-5D-5L (EQ-5D-5L) scores. Spearman correlation analysis revealed an inverse association between VHI scores and EQ-5D-5L (rho = −0.77, p < 0.001), Korean Mann Assessment of Swallowing Ability (rho = −0.51, p < 0.001), and other functional parameters, including the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, MMSE, and MBI scores. Multiple regression analysis indicated that the VHI score was the biggest contributing factor to EQ scores. This is the first study to demonstrate that stroke patients with voice problems may experience reduced quality of life, even after controlling for other confounding factors such as dysphagia or neurological deficits. Future studies are needed whether addressing these issues by implementing the VHI may facilitate the improvement of patients’ quality of life.
