Revealing the Impact of Oxygen Dissolved in Electrolytes on Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries.

ABSTRACT: Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising low-cost and high-safety energy storage devices. However, their capacity decay especially at the initial cyclic stage is a serious issue. Herein, we reveal that the dissolved oxygen in aqueous electrolyte has significant impact on the electrochemistry of Zn anode and ZIBs. After removing oxygen, the symmetrical set-up of Zn/Zn is capable of reversible plating/stripping with a 20-fold lifetime enhancement compared with that in oxygen enrichment condition. Taking aqueous Zn-MnO2 battery as an example, although the presence of oxygen can contribute an extra capacity over 20% at the initial cycles due to the electrocatalytic activity of MnO2 with oxygen, the corrosion of Zn anode can be eliminated in the oxygen-free circumstance and thus offering a better reversible energy storage system. The impact of the dissolved oxygen on the cycling stability also exists in other ZIBs using vanadium-based compounds, Birnessite and Prussian blue analog cathodes.

Cooperative Chloride Hydrogel Electrolytes Enabling Ultralow-Temperature Aqueous Zinc Ion Batteries by the Hofmeister Effect.

Project description:Aqueous zinc ion batteries have high potential applicability for energy storage due to their reliable safety, environmental friendliness, and low cost. However, the freezing of aqueous electrolytes limits the normal operation of batteries at low temperatures. Herein, a series of high-performance and low-cost chloride hydrogel electrolytes with high concentrations and low freezing points are developed. The electrochemical windows of the chloride hydrogel electrolytes are enlarged by > 1 V under cryogenic conditions due to the obvious evolution of hydrogen bonds, which highly facilitates the operation of electrolytes at ultralow temperatures, as evidenced by the low-temperature Raman spectroscopy and linear scanning voltammetry. Based on the Hofmeister effect, the hydrogen-bond network of the cooperative chloride hydrogel electrolyte comprising 3 M ZnCl2 and 6 M LiCl can be strongly interrupted, thus exhibiting a sufficient ionic conductivity of 1.14 mS cm-1 and a low activation energy of 0.21 eV at -50 °C. This superior electrolyte endows a polyaniline/Zn battery with a remarkable discharge specific capacity of 96.5 mAh g-1 at -50 °C, while the capacity retention remains ~ 100% after 2000 cycles. These results will broaden the basic understanding of chloride hydrogel electrolytes and provide new insights into the development of ultralow-temperature aqueous batteries.

Rechargeable Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries in MgSO<sub>4</sub>/ZnSO<sub>4</sub> Hybrid Electrolytes.

Project description:MgSO4 is chosen as an additive to address the capacity fading issue in the rechargeable zinc-ion battery system of MgxV2O5·nH2O//ZnSO4//zinc. Electrolytes with different concentration ratios of ZnSO4 and MgSO4 are investigated. The batteries measured in the 1 M ZnSO4-1 M MgSO4 electrolyte outplay other competitors, which deliver a high specific capacity of 374 mAh g-1 at a current density of 100 mA g-1 and exhibit a competitive rate performance with the reversible capacity of 175 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1. This study provides a promising route to improve the performance of vanadium-based cathodes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries with electrolyte optimization in cost-effective electrolytes.

Rational Development of Neutral Aqueous Electrolytes for Zinc-Air Batteries.

Project description:Neutral aqueous electrolytes have been shown to extend both the calendar life and cycling stability of secondary zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Despite this promise, there are currently no modeling studies investigating the performance of neutral ZABs. Traditional continuum models are numerically insufficient to simulate the dynamic behavior of these complex systems because of the rapid, orders-of-magnitude concentration shifts that occur. In this work, we present a novel framework for modeling the cell-level performance of pH-buffered aqueous electrolytes. We apply our model to conduct the first continuum-scale simulation of secondary ZABs using aqueous ZnCl2 -NH4 Cl as electrolyte. We first use our model to interpret the results of two recent experimental studies of neutral ZABs, showing that the stability of the pH value is a significant factor in cell performance. We then optimize the composition of the electrolyte and the design of the cell considering factors including pH stability, final discharge product, and overall energy density. Our simulations predict that the effectiveness of the pH buffer is limited by slow mass transport and that chlorine-containing solids may precipitate in addition to ZnO.

Optimization of Electrolytes for High-Performance Aqueous Aluminum-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Aqueous rechargeable batteries based on aluminum chemistry have become the focus of immense research interest owing to their earth abundance, low cost, and the higher theoretical volumetric energy density of this element compared to lithium-ion batteries. Efforts to harness this huge potential have been hindered by the narrow potential window of water and by passivating effects of the high-electrical band-gap aluminum oxide film. Herein, we report a high-performing aqueous aluminum-ion battery (AIB), which is constructed using a Zn-supported Al alloy, an aluminum bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (Al[TFSI]3) electrolyte, and a MnO2 cathode. The use of Al[TFSI]3 significantly extends the voltage window of the electrolyte and enables the cell to access Al3+/Al electrochemistry, while the use of Zn-Al alloy mitigates the issue of surface passivation. The Zn-Al alloy, which is produced by in situ electrochemical deposition, obtained from Al[TFSI]3 showed excellent long-term reversibility for Al electrochemistry and displays the highest performance in AIB when compared to the response obtained in Al2(SO4)3 or aluminum trifluoromethanesulfonate electrolyte. AIB cells constructed using the Zn-Al|Al[TFSI]3|MnO2 combination achieved a record discharge voltage plateau of 1.75 V and a specific capacity of 450 mAh g-1 without significant capacity fade after 400 cycles. These findings will promote the development of energy-dense aqueous AIBs.

Zinc-Ion Storage Mechanism of Polyaniline for Rechargeable Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Aqueous multivalent ion batteries, especially aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), have promising energy storage application due to their unique merits of safety, high ionic conductivity, and high gravimetric energy density. To improve their electrochemical performance, polyaniline (PANI) is often chosen to suppress cathode dissolution. Herein, this work focuses on the zinc ion storage behavior of a PANI cathode. The energy storage mechanism of PANI is associated with four types of protonated/non-protonated amine or imine. The PANI cathode achieves a high capacity of 74 mAh g-1 at 0.3 A g-1 and maintains 48.4% of its initial discharge capacity after 1000 cycles. It also demonstrates an ultrahigh diffusion coefficient of 6.25 × 10-9~7.82 × 10-8 cm-2 s-1 during discharging and 7.69 × 10-10~1.81 × 10-7 cm-2 s-1 during charging processes, which is one or two orders of magnitude higher than other reported studies. This work sheds a light on developing PANI-composited cathodes in rechargeable aqueous ZIBs energy storage devices.

Bio-Inspired Polyanionic Electrolytes for Highly Stable Zinc-Ion Batteries.

Project description:For zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), the non-uniform Zn plating/stripping results in a high polarization and low Coulombic efficiency (CE), hindering the large-scale application of ZIBs. Here, inspired by biomass seaweed plants, an anionic polyelectrolyte alginate acid (SA) was used to initiate the in situ formation of the high-performance solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on the Zn anode. Attribute to the anionic groups of -COO- , the affinity of Zn2+ ions to alginate acid induces a well-aligned accelerating channel for uniform plating. This SEI regulates the desolvation structure of Zn2+ and facilitates the formation of compact Zn (002) crystal planes. Even under high depth of discharge conditions (DOD), the SA-coated Zn anode still maintains a stable Zn stripping/plating behavior with a low potential difference (0.114 V). According to the classical nucleation theory, the nucleation energy for SA-coated Zn is 97 % less than that of bare Zn, resulting in a faster nucleation rate. The Zn||Cu cell assembled with the SA-coated electrode exhibits an outstanding average CE of 99.8 % over 1,400 cycles. The design is successfully demonstrated in pouch cells, where the SA-coated Zn exhibits capacity retention of 96.9 % compared to 59.1 % for bare Zn anode, even under the high cathode mass loading (>10 mg/cm2 ).

New-concept batteries based on aqueous Li+/Na+ mixed-ion electrolytes.

Project description:Rechargeable batteries made from low-cost and abundant materials operating in safe aqueous electrolytes are attractive for large-scale energy storage. Sodium-ion battery is considered as a potential alternative of current lithium-ion battery. As sodium-intercalation compounds suitable for aqueous batteries are limited, we adopt a novel concept of Li(+)/Na(+) mixed-ion electrolytes to create two batteries (LiMn2O4/Na0.22MnO2 and Na0.44MnO2/TiP2O7), which relies on two electrochemical processes. One involves Li(+) insertion/extraction reaction, and the other mainly relates to Na(+) extraction/insertion reaction. Two batteries exhibit specific energy of 17 Wh kg(-1) and 25 Wh kg(-1) based on the total weight of active electrode materials, respectively. As well, aqueous LiMn2O4/Na0.22MnO2 battery is capable of separating Li(+) and Na(+) due to its specific mechanism unlike the traditional "rocking-chair" lithium-ion batteries. Hence, the Li(+)/Na(+) mixed-ion batteries offer promising applications in energy storage and Li(+)/Na(+) separation.

Hybrid Aqueous/Organic Electrolytes Enable the High-Performance Zn-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Rechargeable aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) are considered as one of the most promising systems for large-scale energy storage due to their merits of low cost, environmental friendliness, and high safety. The utilization of aqueous electrolyte also brings about some problems such as low energy density, fast self-discharge, and capacity fading associated with the dissolution of metals in water. To combat the issues, we utilize a freestanding vanadium oxide hydrate/carbon nanotube (V2O5·nH2O/CNT) film as the cathode and probe the performance in aqueous/organic hybrid electrolytes. The corresponding structural and morphological evolution of both V2O5·nH2O/CNT cathode and Zn anode in different electrolytes is explored. The integrity of electrodes and the suppression of zinc dendrites during cycles are largely improved in the hybrid electrolytes. Accordingly, the battery in hybrid electrolyte exhibits high capacities of 549 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 after 100 cycles and 282 mAh g-1 at 4 A g-1 after 1000 cycles, demonstrating an excellent energy density of 102 Wh kg-1 at a high power of 1500 W kg-1 based on the cathode.

Non-concentrated aqueous electrolytes with organic solvent additives for stable zinc batteries.

Project description:Rechargeable aqueous zinc batteries (RAZBs) are promising for large-scale energy storage because of their superiority in addressing cost and safety concerns. However, their practical realization is hampered by issues including dendrite growth, poor reversibility and low coulombic efficiency (CE) of Zn anodes due to parasitic reactions. Here, we report a non-concentrated aqueous electrolyte composed of 2 m zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate (Zn(OTf)2) and the organic dimethyl carbonate (DMC) additive to stabilize the Zn electrochemistry. Unlike the case in conventional aqueous electrolytes featuring typical Zn[H2O]6 2+ solvation, a solvation sheath of Zn2+ with the co-participation of the DMC solvent and OTf- anion is found in the formulated H2O + DMC electrolyte, which contributes to the formation of a robust ZnF2 and ZnCO3-rich interphase on Zn. The resultant Zn anode exhibits a high average CE of Zn plating/stripping (99.8% at an areal capacity of 2.5 mA h cm-2) and dendrite-free cycling over 1000 cycles. Furthermore, the H2O + DMC electrolytes sustain stable operation of RAZBs pairing Zn anodes with diverse cathode materials such as vanadium pentoxide, manganese dioxide, and zinc hexacyanoferrate. Rational electrolyte design with organic solvent additives would promote building better aqueous batteries.

Superconcentrated NaFSA-KFSA Aqueous Electrolytes for 2 V-Class Dual-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Superconcentrated aqueous electrolytes containing NaN(SO2F)2 and KN(SO2F)2 (for which sodium and potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)amides (FSA), respectively, are abbreviated) have been developed for 2 V-class aqueous batteries. Based on the eutectic composition of the NaFSA-KFSA (56:44 mol/mol) binary system, the superconcentrated solutions of 35 mol kg-1 Na0.55K0.45FSA/H2O and 33 mol kg-1 Na0.45K0.55FSA/H2O are found to form at 25 °C. As both electrolytes demonstrate a wider potential window of ∼3.5 V compared to that of either saturated 20 mol kg-1 NaFSA or 31 mol kg-1 KFSA solution, we applied the 33 mol kg-1 Na0.45K0.55FSA/H2O to two different battery configurations, carbon-coated Na2Ti2(PO4)3∥K2Mn[Fe(CN)6] and carbon-coated Na3V2(PO4)3∥K2Mn[Fe(CN)6]. The former cell shows highly reversible charge/discharge curves with a mean discharge voltage of 1.4 V. Although the latter cell exhibits capacity degradation, it demonstrates 2 V-class operations. Analysis data of the two cells confirmed that Na+ ions were mainly inserted into the negative electrodes passivated by a Na-rich solid electrolyte interphase, and both Na+ and K+ ions were inserted into the positive electrode. Based upon the observation, we propose new sodium-/potassium-ion batteries using the superconcentrated NaFSA-KFSA aqueous electrolytes.
