The Frequency of Fast Food Consumption in Relation to Wheeze and Asthma Among Adolescents in Gauteng and North West Provinces, South Africa.

ABSTRACT: The prevalence of asthma and allergic diseases have been on the rise, especially in developing countries due to life-style changes. The study aimed to investigate the association between the frequency of fast food consumption with wheeze and asthma among adolescents. A previously validated self-completed questionnaire from the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood was used to collect information on demographics, socioeconomic status, house characteristics, adolescent respiratory health and diet. The prevalence of wheeze was 38.2% and of asthma was 16.37% among the adolescents. The results from the adjusted regression analyses indicated that eating fast foods three or more times per week was a statistically significant risk factor for wheeze (OR = 1.60; 95% CI: 1.26-2.03) and asthma (OR = 1.37; 95% CI: 1.04-1.91). The study found an association between eating fast foods three or more times per week and wheeze and asthma among adolescents in South Africa. Unhealthy diet plays a crucial role in respiratory health among adolescents; healthy eating habits are encouraged to reduce the burden of respiratory symptoms and diseases.

Project description:The edge of the North West European Shelf (NWES) is characterised by a steep continental slope and a northward flowing slope current. These topographic/hydrographic features separate oceanic water and shelf water masses hence potentially separate phytoplankton communities. The slope current may facilitate the advective transport of phytoplankton, with mixing at the shelf edge supporting nutrient supply and therefore phytoplankton production. On the west Scottish shelf in particular, little is known about the phytoplankton communities in and around the shelf break and adjacent waters. Hence, to improve our understanding of environmental drivers of phytoplankton communities, biological and environmental data were collected on seven cross-shelf transects across the Malin and Hebridean Shelves during autumn 2014. Density profiles indicated that shelf break and oceanic stations had a 100 m deep mixed surface layer while stations on the shelf were generally well mixed. Analysis of similarity and multidimensional scaling of phytoplankton counts revealed that phytoplankton communities on the shelf were significantly different to those found at the shelf break and at oceanic stations. Shelf stations were dominated by dinoflagellates, with diatoms contributing a maximum of 37% of cells. Shelf break and oceanic stations were also dinoflagellate dominated but displayed a lower species diversity. Significant difference between shelf and shelf break stations suggested that the continental slope limited cross shelf phytoplankton exchange. Northern and southern phytoplankton communities on the shelf were approximately 15% dissimilar while there was no latitudinal gradient for stations along the slope current, suggesting this current provided south to north connectivity. Fitting environmental data to phytoplankton ordination showed a significant relationship between phytoplankton community dissimilarities and nutrient concentrations and light availability on the shelf compared to shelf break and oceanic stations in the study area.

Project description:Asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways characterised by episodic airway obstruction resulting in cough, episodic shortness of breath. It is, and is clinically and physiologically heterogeneous. It is estimated that around 300 million people worldwide have the diseaseare diagnosed with asthma, including up to 20% of children (Asher et al, 2006), with 5–10% of these children believed to have severe or difficult-to-treat asthma. Asthma has often been classified in terms of severity and based on clinical diagnostic criteria, but it is now apparent that the heterogeneity that exists at the physiological level is also a feature of the underlying pathological mechanisms (Lotvall et al, 2011). The aim of this study was to identify blood transcriptomics profiles for children diagnosed with asthma or wheeze, and establish whether these profiles suggested endotypes or mechanisms that could underlie disease, or be related to disease severity, in these children. Importantly, given that children are currently treated with the same medicines as adults, we also aimed to compare profiles of children to those of adults with asthma to help determine whether efforts should be directed to the development of medicines targeting pathways and mechanisms that may be unique to children. To this end, we used gene transcriptome data generated from blood samples from adults and children from the U-BIOPRED consortium to ask how similar or different the differential gene expression profiles were between groups of adults and pre-school or school-aged children with severe or mild-moderate asthma (or wheeze for the pre-school aged children) using current definitions. The Unbiased Biomarkers for the Prediction of Respiratory Disease Outcomes (U-BIOPRED) project was set up as a public-private partnership within the framework of the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), engaging academia, the pharmaceutical industry and patient groups. The goal of this investigation was to identify transcript fingerprints in whole blood that characterize patients with severe asthma and to determine whether subgroups of severe asthmatics can be identified.
