From Discrete Complexes to Metal-Organic Layered Materials: Remarkable Hydrogen Bonding Frameworks.

ABSTRACT: A series of metal-organic coordination complexes based on alkaline-earth metal centers [Mg(II), Ca(II), and Ba(II)] and the ligand 5-aminoisophthalate (aip2-) revealed notable structural diversity, both in the materials' dimensionality and in their hydrogen bonding networks: [Mg(H2O)6]?[Mg2(Haip)(H2O)10]?(Haip)?3(aip)?10(H2O) (1) and [Mg(aip)(phen)(H2O)2]?(H2O) (2) were isolated as discrete complexes (0D); [Ca(aip)(H2O)2]?(H2O) (3), [Ca(aip)(phen)(H2O)2]?(phen)?(H2O) (4), and [Ba2(aip)2(phen)2(H2O)7]?2(phen)?2(H2O) (5) revealed metal-organic chain (1D) structures, while the [Ba(aip)(H2O)] (6) showed a metal-organic layered (2D) arrangement. Furthermore, most of these metal-organic coordination materials revealed interesting thermal stability properties, being stable at temperatures up to 450 °C.

Adsorptive Removal of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products from Water with Functionalized Metal-organic Frameworks: Remarkable Adsorbents with Hydrogen-bonding Abilities.

Project description:Adsorption of typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) (such as naproxen, ibuprofen and oxybenzone) from aqueous solutions was studied by using the highly porous metal-organic framework (MOF) MIL-101 with and without functionalization. Adsorption results showed that MIL-101s with H-donor functional groups such as -OH and -NH2 were very effective for naproxen adsorption, despite a decrease in porosity, probably because of H-bonding between O atoms on naproxen and H atoms on the adsorbent. For this reason, MIL-101 with two functional groups capable of H-bonding (MIL-101-(OH)2) exhibited remarkable adsorption capacity based on adsorbent surface area. The favorable contributions of -OH and -(OH)2 on MIL-101 in the increased adsorption of ibuprofen and oxybenzone (especially based on porosity) confirmed again the importance of H-bonding mechanism. The adsorbent with the highest adsorption capacity, MIL-101-OH, was very competitive when compared with carbonaceous materials, mesoporous materials, and pristine MIL-101. Moreover, the MIL-101-OH could be recycled several times by simply washing with ethanol, suggesting potential application in the adsorptive removal of PPCPs from water.

Bioactivity of Isostructural Hydrogen Bonding Frameworks Built from Pipemidic Acid Metal Complexes.

Project description:We report herein three novel complexes whose design was based on the approach that consists of combining commercially available antibiotics with metals to attain different physicochemical properties and promote antimicrobial activity. Thus, new isostructural three-dimensional (3D) hydrogen bonding frameworks of pipemidic acid with manganese (II), zinc (II) and calcium (II) have been synthesised by mechanochemistry and are stable under shelf conditions. Notably, the antimicrobial activity of the compounds is maintained or even increased; in particular, the activity of the complexes is augmented against Escherichia coli, a representative of Gram-negative bacteria that have emerged as a major concern in drug resistance. Moreover, the synthesised compounds display similar general toxicity (Artemia salina model) levels to the original antibiotic, pipemidic acid. The increased antibacterial activity of the synthesised compounds, together with their appropriate toxicity levels, are promising outcomes.

Metal complexes with varying intramolecular hydrogen bonding networks.

Project description:Alfred Werner described the attributes of the primary and secondary coordination spheres in his development of coordination chemistry. To examine the effects of the secondary coordination sphere on coordination chemistry, a series of tripodal ligands containing differing numbers of hydrogen bond (H-bond) donors were used to examine the effects of H-bonds on Fe(II), Mn(II)-acetato, and Mn(III)-OH complexes. The ligands containing varying numbers of urea and amidate donors allowed for systematic changes in the secondary coordination spheres of the complexes. Two of the Fe(II) complexes that were isolated as their Bu4N+ salts formed dimers in the solid-state as determined by X-ray diffraction methods, which correlates with the number of H-bonds present in the complexes (i.e., dimerization is favored as the number of H-bond donors increases). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies suggested that the dimeric structures persist in acetonitrile. The Mn(II) complexes were all isolated as their acetato adducts. Furthermore, the synthesis of a rare Mn(III)-OH complex via dioxygen activation was achieved that contains a single intramolecular H-bond; its physical properties are discussed within the context of other Mn(III)-OH complexes.

Multidimensional transition metal complexes based on 3-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-carboxylic acid: from discrete mononuclear complexes to layered materials.

Project description:The synthesis and structural characterization of five transition metal complexes with different dimensionality and incorporating residues of 3-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-carboxylic acid (H2atrc) is reported: [Zn(Hatrc)2(H2O)] (1), [Mn(Hatrc)2(H2O)2]·2H2O (2), [Fe2(Hatrc)4(OH)2]·6H2O (3), [Cd(Hatrc)2(H2O)]n (4), and [Mn(atrc)(H2O)]n·nH2O (5). These materials could be prepared from solution (1-3), diffusion (4), or hydrothermal reactions (5) with various anions and L:M ratios. Structural details were revealed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The discrete units composing compounds 1-3, the polymeric 1D chain of 4 and the 2D layer of 5 are further extended into 3D supramolecular architectures through the formation of hydrogen bonds.

Inside polyMOFs: layered structures in polymer-based metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:In this report, we explore the internal structural features of polyMOFs consisting of equal mass ratios of metal-coordinating poly(benzenedicarboxylic acid) blocks and non-coordinating poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) blocks. The studies reveal alternating lamellae of metal-rich, crystalline regions and metal-deficient non-crystalline polymer, which span the length of hundreds of nanometers. Polymers consisting of random PEG blocks, PEG end-blocks, or non-coordinating poly(cyclooctadiene) (COD) show similar alternation of metal-rich and metal-deficient regions, indicating a universal self-assembly mechanism. A variety of techniques were employed to interrogate the internal structure of the polyMOFs, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and small-angle synchrotron X-ray scattering (SAXS). Independent of the copolymer architecture or composition, the internal structure of the polyMOF crystals showed similar lamellar self-assembly at single-nanometer length scales.

Conceptual Advances from Werner Complexes to Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:Alfred Werner's work on the geometric aspects of how ligands bind to metal ions at the end of the 19th century has given rise, in the molecular realm, to organometallic, bioinorganic, and cluster chemistries. By stitching together organic and inorganic units into crystalline porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the connectivity, spatial arrangement, and geometry of those molecular complexes can now be fixed in space and become directly addressable. The fact that MOFs are porous provides additional space within which molecules can further be transformed and their chemistry controlled. An aspect not available in molecular chemistry but a direct consequence of Werner's analysis of coordination complexes is the ability to have multivariable functionality in MOFs to bring about a continuum of chemical environments, within the repeating order of the framework, from which a substrate can sample and be transformed in ways not possible in molecular complex chemistry.

Coordination-bond-directed synthesis of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks from metal-organic frameworks as templates.

Project description:Controlled synthesis of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) remains challenging, because the self-assembly of ligands is not only directed by weak hydrogen bonds, but also affected by other competing van der Waals forces. Herein, we demonstrate the coordination-bond-directed synthesis of HOFs using a preformed metal-organic framework (MOF) as the template. A MOF (CuI-TTFTB) based on two-coordinated CuI centers and tetrathiafulvalene-tetrabenzoate (TTFTB) ligands was initially synthesized. CuI-TTFTB was subsequently oxidized to the intermediate (CuII-TTFTB) and hydrated to the HOF product (TTFTB-HOF). Single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation was realized throughout the MOF-to-HOF transformation so that the evolution of structures was directly observed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The oxidation and hydration of the CuI center are critical to breaking the Cu-carboxylate bonds, while the synergic corbelled S⋯S and π⋯π interactions in the framework ensured stability of materials during post-synthetic modification. This work not only provided a strategy to guide the design and discovery of new HOFs, but also linked the research of MOFs and HOFs.

Force-Field Prediction of Materials Properties in Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:In this work, MOF bulk properties are evaluated and compared using several force fields on several well-studied MOFs, including IRMOF-1 (MOF-5), IRMOF-10, HKUST-1, and UiO-66. It is found that, surprisingly, UFF and DREIDING provide good values for the bulk modulus and linear thermal expansion coefficients for these materials, excluding those that they are not parametrized for. Force fields developed specifically for MOFs including UFF4MOF, BTW-FF, and the DWES force field are also found to provide accurate values for these materials' properties. While we find that each force field offers a moderately good picture of these properties, noticeable deviations can be observed when looking at properties sensitive to framework vibrational modes. This observation is more pronounced upon the introduction of framework charges.

Control of structural flexibility of layered-pillared metal-organic frameworks anchored at surfaces.

Project description:Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are structurally flexible, porous, crystalline solids that show a structural transition in response to a stimulus. If MOF-based solid-state and microelectronic devices are to be capable of leveraging such structural flexibility, then the integration of MOF thin films into a device configuration is crucial. Here we report the targeted and precise anchoring of Cu-based alkylether-functionalised layered-pillared MOF crystallites onto substrates via stepwise liquid-phase epitaxy. The structural transformation during methanol sorption is monitored by in-situ grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. Interestingly, spatially-controlled anchoring of the flexible MOFs on the surface induces a distinct structural responsiveness which is different from the bulk powder and can be systematically controlled by varying the crystallite characteristics, for instance dimensions and orientation. This fundamental understanding of thin-film flexibility is of paramount importance for the rational design of MOF-based devices utilising the structural flexibility in specific applications such as selective sensors.

3D-Printed Porous Magnetic Carbon Materials Derived from Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:Here we report new porous carbon materials obtained by 3D printing from photopolymer compositions with zinc- and nickel-based metal-organic frameworks, ZIF-8 and Ni-BTC, followed by high-temperature pyrolysis. The pyrolyzed materials that retain the shapes of complex objects contain pores, which were produced by boiling zinc and magnetic nickel particles. The two thus provided functionalities-large specific surface area and ferromagnetism-that pave the way towards creating heterogenous catalysts that can be easily removed from reaction mixtures in industrial catalytic processes.
