Perceptions of Care Sport Connectors' Tasks for Strengthening the Connection Between Primary Care, Sports and Physical Activity: A Delphi Study.

ABSTRACT:

Introduction

Care sport connectors stimulate physical activity and facilitate collaboration between the primary care and physical activity sectors in the Netherlands. To strengthen intersectoral collaboration between the primary care and sports sectors, it is necessary to study which tasks a care sport connector must fulfil according to their own and other professionals' perceptions.

Methods

A Delphi study was conducted with 182 professionals from the primary care, public health and physical activity sectors. Rounds 1 and 2 included questions about task perception, willingness to collaborate and expectations of care sport connectors. Rounds 3 and 4 were used to reach consensus.

Results

All professions acknowledged physical activity promotion tasks, but they are not all willing to collaborate. They expect a broad range of roles from care sport connectors: informative, executive, guiding and intermediate. Care sport connectors reached consensus on two roles: informative and intermediate.

Discussion

Care sport connectors have an important role in strengthening intersectoral collaboration. All the professions acknowledged a task concerning physical activity promotion and accepted a broker role. Thus, a public health mind-set seems to be present to some extent. However, challenges remain, such as the lack of willingness to collaborate among primary care professionals and sports policies not (yet) supporting intersectoral collaboration.

Project description:BackgroundUnderstanding the relationships between physical fitness characteristics and sports injury may assist with the development of injury minimisation programs. The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate the association between physical fitness attributes and sports injury in female, team ball sport players.MethodsFour scientific databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, SPORTDiscus, Scopus) and reference lists of relevant research were searched for eligible studies up to September 2, 2019. Full-text articles examining the relationship between physical fitness and sports injury in female, team ball sport players were included. A modified Downs and Black checklist was used to assess methodological quality. Data synthesis determined summary conclusions based on the number of significant relationships divided by the total relationships investigated and reported as a percentage. Level of certainty was identified for summary conclusions based on level of evidence. Sub-analyses regarding competition level, age, and single injury types were also conducted.ResultsA total of 44 studies were included. Data synthesis revealed no associations (low to moderate certainty) between body composition (1/9; 11%), flexibility (18-20%), and balance (2/8; 25%) and 'any injury' classification. No associations (mostly of moderate certainty) were found between flexibility (0-27%), muscular strength (0-27%), and body composition (14-33%) and various body region injury classifications, whereas mixed summary conclusions were shown for balance (0-48%). Many associations between physical fitness and sports injury were deemed 'unknown' or with an insufficient level of certainty. Sub-analyses revealed no association between strength and noncontact ACL injuries (0/5; 0%) or ankle sprains (0/12; 0%), and between flexibility and ankle sprains (1/5; 20%); however, insufficient certainty of these results exists. Clear associations were concluded between balance and lower body injuries in female, non-elite (10/16; 63%) and junior (9/12; 75%) team ball sport players, with moderate and insufficient certainty of these results, respectively.ConclusionLimited evidence is available to demonstrate relationships between physical fitness and sports injury in female, team ball sport players. High-quality evidence investigating the multifactorial nature of sports injury, including the interactions physical fitness qualities have with other injury determinants, is needed to better understand the role of physical fitness in minimising sports injuries in female, team ball sport players.Trial registrationCRD42017077374 (PROSPERO on September 14, 2017).

Project description:BackgroundTo develop targeted policy strategies to increase sports participation, more insight is needed into the behavioural patterns and preferences of users of different club-organized (i.e., sports clubs) and non-club organized (i.e., gyms, health centres or swimming pools) or informal sports settings such as public spaces. This study investigates 1) how users of different settings differ regarding self-determined motivations and goals, and sociodemographic and sports-related characteristics, and 2) how the association of motivations and goals with sports participation may differ between users of different sports settings.MethodsData were collected through online surveys among Dutch adults aged 18-80 years (N = 910). Ordinal regression analyses were used to investigate the effects of sports settings, the level of self-determined motivations and goals, and interaction effects of motivations and goals with different sports settings, on sports frequency.ResultsUsers of different sports settings differed in their personal characteristics, motivations and goals. In general, controlled motivations were negatively associated with sports frequency (B = -0.46). However, among club members, extrinsic goals related to image (B = 0.44), as well as intrinsic goals related to skill development (B = 0.40) and social affiliation (B = 0.47) had significant positive associations with sports frequency. Health-related goals significantly increased sports frequency among users of informal settings, such as public spaces.ConclusionThe association of motivational variables with sports participation differs between settings. This implies that sports frequency is higher when participants engage in settings that better fit their motivations and goals. Because of the growing importance of informal and flexible settings and health goals, professionals in the sports and health domains should take into account the motivations, goals and needs of different target groups who (want to) use unorganized, informal sports settings including public spaces.

Project description:IntroductionAdolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is present in 2%-3% of those under 18 years old and has a significant impact on pain, function and quality of life. Up to 10% of adolescents with AIS progress to spinal fusion surgery, and of those individuals many experience reduced musculoskeletal function and do not return to sports postoperatively. Physiotherapists have a significant role in promoting participation and offering a graded return to sports, exercise and physical activity. However, there is a lack of evidence and variability between surgeons and physiotherapists worldwide regarding rehabilitation milestones and return to exercise, sports and physical activity. This study aims to reach a consensus on when it is safe and how an individual might begin a graded return to sports, exercise and physical activity.Methods and analysisThis protocol was written in accordance with the Guidance on Conducting and REporting DElphi Studies (CREDES) guidelines. An international expert sample of surgeons and physiotherapists in AIS will be recruited. This electronic Delphi is anticipated to consist of three iterative rounds. Round 1 will be a series of open-ended questions examining rehabilitation milestones and return to sports, exercise and physical activity postoperatively. Round 2 will commence with a summary of the existing literature for participants to review. Rounds 2 and 3 will involve a collated summary of results from the previous round, including any dissonance. During rounds 2 and 3, participants will be asked to privately rate responses on a 5-point Likert scale. The study steering group and patient and public involvement representative have been involved from conceptualisation and will continue to be involved until final dissemination.Ethics and disseminationFull ethical approval has been provided by the University of Birmingham, reference number: ERN_1617-Nov2023. Dissemination will take place through conference presentation and peer-reviewed publications.
