Neuromodulators bind to pre- and postsynaptic G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), are able to quickly change intracellular cyclic AMP (cAMP) and Ca<sup>2+</sup> levels, and are thought to play important roles in neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases.
